There is historical fiction that is set in a vague 19th c westward expansion or English Regency time period, or perhaps the Middle Ages or World War II. Then there is the sort that puts characters in the middle of pivotal events, meeting characters straight out of history. That’s the kind I like, stories that deepen my understanding of what such events meant to the lives of real people. Donna Fletcher Crow’s books are that kind of historical fiction. In this book a naïve cavalryman rides with the Light Brigade into the disastrous battle, and a well-bred young do-gooder goes as a nurse to serve under Miss Florence Nightingale (“Flo”) under horrific hospital conditions that killed as many as the battles of Crimea. Both are changed forever.

I have read before that it was the social action of the Wesleys and early Methodism that saved England from a fate similar to the French Revolution. Crow introduces us to all sorts of movements as well as exposing the horrors of the Industrial Revolution, and she puts a face on the people involved, including the young preacher Charles Spurgeon. Of course, there is a love story. And a mystery. Although the solution to that might be a little obvious, it too is based on historical events.

Goeie dag Donna,
Ek geniet jou boeke baie, dis altyd baie goed met uitstekende en betroubare navorsing en kom met 'n boodskap wat Charles Spurgeon sou waardeer. Ek gaan dikwels self na of die inligting korrek is. So leer ek meer van die geskiedenis sowel as van die Bybel. Dis so verfrissend om goeie werke te lees wat 'n Christelike inhoud het, sonder enige misbruik van die Here se naam of kragwoorde. Jou boeke is tegelyk 'n getuie en 'n aanmoediging om Jesus meer te volg, om Sy liefde beter te begryp.

Great

The romance was sweet. T h e background of the war was informative. The life in London for the poor was rough.. The horror of the factories and the use of women and children and and the work of men almost as slaves or animals was brought to light.
Besides all this the story of love and caring sthone through. I enjoyed the main characters and their growth. The history of reform was inspiring.
