I admit I had both trepidation and hope going into this book. While I was excited to move away from Chloe and Jason (because I want them to be as stable as they deserve, finally), I worried about moving to the less mature Kyra. Yes, we see in the last book that she has matured in some very intriguing ways, but that could easily devolve into sappy or preachy territory. I shouldn't have worried.

As with most series reviews, I'm going to be less detailed than I might otherwise be because really, read the first books before this one. If you have, you know more or less what to expect. Fortunately, Tippetts delivers on the expectation while still keeping it fresh and avoiding any hint of formula or stagnation.

That said, and to be honest, this story had less weight than the others. Kyra is younger and her problems were both more predictable and less dire than Jason and Chloe faced. Indeed, this was a solid 4 stars edging up a little, maybe, until the end. Tippetts' handling of Kyra's sketchy past was just so perfect (without Kyra being perfect, though she was very strong and courageous) that it reached past platitude and delivered the truth of her resolution straight into my heart. Tears were evoked. And yes, I'm an easy touch, but still, Tippetts just delivers it straight from the heart and I just can't help being touched by these characters. They're just so flawed yet so strong that I can't help taking a message of hope and empowerment in the face of trial and failure.

Tippetts is fast moving to the top of my buy-on-release list.

I am a huge fan of Emily Mah Tippetts so I was a little surprised that this book just didn't work for me. The plot is seriously lacking and the ending? Ugh. No.
Kyra knows her way around boys. She's been having sex since middle school and has a raunchy past. Now in her late teens she's turned over a new leaf.
It's interesting to see Kyra trying to be the good girl but she's still got all her experience from being the bad.
I had to smile a little as she tries to get her parents to be strict with her. But they're all, “Darling, you're 18. Live a little.”

Zach
I didn't like Zach. He's a pansy pretty much all the way through. One of the worst heroes ever.
Zach is not at all experienced with girls. Having grown up a child star, he's only just realising how to be an adult now and he's soooo freakin' naïve at 21.

I’ve known him long enough that I get the innocent vibe loud and clear. He wouldn’t just disapprove if I jumped him — he’d freak out.

Ben is the bad boy of the band. Well, as bad boy as you can get in a family band. He's got attitude and I loved his banter with Kyra.
The boys aren't in a good place so I was surprised to see Kyra whipping them into shape. For some reason they listen to her.

Zach thinks Kyra's a “real nice girl”. He's completely clueless. And Kyra's not sure how to break it to him.

I can still pretend to be the girl he wants for a little while longer.

Kyra is a beautiful, mature and strong character. I think she deserved better than Zach. Despite Zach being good-looking, there's not much else going on for him.

He’s Zach Wechsler, and right now, his lack of confidence is annoying.

That's right! It was so lip-curlingly irritating. I'm not sure if he had a masculine bone in his body. It wasn't just once that I thought, Wow, Zach, you're a really big loser. He's three years older than Kyra but she's constantly having to baby him or set down the boundaries.

This is the weirdest book. It's in two separate parts. One part is the familiar family part: really great stuff from Jason particularly, and from Kyra's father, and from Jen. And one part is a sort of - paean for celebrity culture, and I never felt like that meshed well with Kyra's personality and story. I get why, logically, it would work, but I don't think it worked well when actually written out. Maybe because the idea that you just have to be okay with incredibly invasive media and horrific lies in order to have a relationship you value (in Chloe's case, I guess; in Kyra's case, it's only the idea of a relationship) - anyway, I find that idea so uncomfortable that I just shied away from that aspect.

There are also details that don't work in context, like

Ugh, and the whole "we are grown up and can do what we want" thing from the boy band, without them realizing that this story has been played out quiiiiiiiiite a few times before, didn't work for me, either. And that, balanced against the Girl Power interview... It was all too much.

I like Kyra a lot, but I wish she had a different story.

3.5 - Mostly I liked this, and Tippetts continues to be spot-on with her refusal to allow any slut-shaming to sneak through in her books. It's just a personal thing really, but the whole "I know I SHOULD be honest with him/her but I love him/her TOO MUCH to lose him/her, which would inevitably happen if I STOPPED LYING" thing makes me wild.

Original-Rezension: The emotional life of books

Meine Meinung:

So auch „Break it Up“.

Mein Fazit:

This one was only okay for me. I was confused about the trajectory of the relationship. And I want to know what happens next with the band/Zach's career!

And I don't know. The plot about Kyra's past went on too long for me. I know she's young, but I guess I'm too firm a believer in the people who matter won't care. It was all too dramatic for me.

Because I am dreadfully waiting for the IMPENDING DOOM – if Zach finds out about her past – what would happen???!

Kyra Armijo had a wild past. As past being the operative word here, she’s starting to change her ways. She no longer sleeps around, break curfews, or drinks. She gained herself straight A’s in school. All she wanted to do was to secure her future, be a better person and find a great guy who will love her despite of everything else.

However, an opportunity to get on tour with a popular HOT band, Triple Cross, was offered to her. Kyra knew it was a chance of a lifetime, and she couldn’t let the opportunity past. Problem is though, she’s falling in love with a band member who has a good boy tattooed on his forehead, and has no idea about the “previous” HER while trying to escape the unwanted attention of another who knew a lot about her past.

Triple Cross is a wholesome band, approved by her parents and is loved by millions all over the planet, they had just fired their longtime manager who ruled the group with an iron fist and maintained their clean image. Now, they have a new manager, and a director-producer who follows them with cameras and records just about everything they do. And now Zach, Kyra’s object of affection, is showing interest in her. How can she possibly tell him about her past when he told her he wasn’t into those types of girls? When the media digs out her past – it will go frenzy and may affect the band big time. One bad decision, one slip, one truth can have the band swirling down from the pinnacle of success.

If you think the front stage set is crazy, wait till you get back stage, and on tour. With all the media eyes on you, and the paparazzi waiting for you to slip up and do something crazy, it was one heck of a ride.

It isn’t easy to change. It is even harder to convince people that you have indeed change. Kyra is an amazing girl who had done things in her past that she wasn’t really proud of, but is now making up for it. Her father and her step-mother trusted her 100%. (I wish I had the chance to know her past before this, because she was really surprised that they have given her a leeway to do what she wants). Nevertheless, she must have done something really good that she regained the trust of the people close to her. I like her relationship with Jason, not just because it allowed her access to the rich and famous in the showbizness, but he actually care about this girl, despite everything. Chloe, Jason’s wife, also adored her. (I wonder if they would have their own story – because I think theirs would be interesting as well). But, I love her father the most – for giving her another chance, trust and loving her immensely despite her imperfections.

I enjoyed reading these book – all those paparazzi chase, the changes in every characters and the relationship between them. It gives us a glimpse of the imperfections behind the stage and under the limelight. Reminds the readers that these artists, no matter how popular they are, they’re still humans and is capable of making mistakes. BUT what I love about this book the most is that it tells us that people have the power to change and you can’t hold their past against them. It is easy to judge without knowing what the other has been through.

EM Tippets - with all teary eyes, would just like to say...

**review originally posted on Coffee Bean Bookshelf**

I will say that I was happily right about how much I would like this book! This was just what I wanted to read…a sweet little romance with an interesting and different plot. The romance wasn’t in my face that much, either, which was a change of pace

I immediately like Kyra’s character – she was a little bit self-depreciating, but strong in many ways because she was smart enough to see the mistakes of her past. I had a little bit of a hard time trying to figure out her family connections, they were mentioned a few times but I would forget and then get confused. It makes more sense now that I realize that there are two other books dealing with her family, though this is not a part of a series. By the end, I had it mostly figured out, though, and loved her family for who they were, and how they came together for her when she needed them.

Zach was truly a breath of fresh air – a good kid, with a squeaky clean image – not a bad boy, not a reformed bad boy, or a boy with an attitude. Ben and Logan were not really the focus of the story, but I definitely liked Logan a lot more than Ben, who was downright rude and rebellious.

For some reason I like stories revolving about the music and entertainment industries, and this was a new twist on that theme. This boy band has changed managers and are ready to shed their “good boy” image, they’re on tour *and* to top it all off, they are having a documentary made about the band. What I loved most was that it all felt real and not haphazardly thrown together – the connections, fights and emotions displayed all rang true. While many other books in this genre focus on the music scene, Break It Up went another direction, and was more about the people involved and the conflict that goes along with that.

I didn’t see the major conflict coming the way that it did. I probably should have, it was a long time coming throughout the book, but I had hopes that Kyra would be able to pull it off and everything would be very happily-ever-after. It didn’t quite work out that way, but enough that I was still quite happy with the ending.

If you’re in the mood for a New Adult novel that isn’t heavy on the romance and a refreshing change from the norm, you should definitely check it out. I will warn you, though, that it’s still for a mature audience – while there are no graphic scenes, the story doesn’t shy away from the subject of sex. I think I will be reading the novels about Kyra’s aunt and uncle soon, and will be watching for more stories by this author!

I really enjoyed this story. Not that it was a surprise because I tend to love anything E.M. Tippetts writes. This book was a spin off of her previous series, Someone Else's Fairytale, and I absolutely loved those books as well. There is no cliffhanger.

Kyra is just now starting to realize the error of her promiscuous ways and has decided she needs to change. After the death of her mother, she was raised by her father and tended to be a wild child. Now at the age of 18, she wants to prove to the world and herself that she can change.

Her connection to the previous books is her Step-mother Jen, who is twins with Jason Vanderholt (the movie stat from Someone Else's Fairytale). She has a wonderfully supportive and loving family. Even through all her wild days they have stayed by her side. I think she is almost embarrassed for the way she has acted. Jason gets her and some of her friends invited to dinner with Triple Cross, whom she is a huge fan of, and this is when she meets Zach.

Zach is the singer of the band and likes her shy demeanor towards him. He starts to text her quite frequently and things develop nicely from that point on. Zach is a little lonely and Kyra seems to actually want to talk to him and listen to him, which is nice when you can't really trust anyone being a rock star.

Zach wants Kyra to go on tour with him and hints at a relationship between the two of them. Kyra seems scared that he will find out about her past and turn his back on her. Ben, another member of the band, isn't helping matters by telling her exactly that but letting her know that there will always be a spot in his bed open for her particular brand of bad girl….awkward.

She finally gives in and joins the tour to support Zach. What happens after that is a huge mess. Zach wants Kyra, Kyra wants Zach, but Ben wants Kyra too and he makes it known for everyone to see. I guess the question is whether or not Kyra can handle the crazy lifestyle in a mature way or revert back to the promiscuous troublesome girl she was before.

I loved this book! I really thought Kyra was a wonderful female lead and she truly did show her maturity in dealing with the band as well as the publicity of being with the band. I would rate this book at 4 Stars and highly recommend the entire series!

Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. It was a quick read that had me hooked. I read every free chance I had and finished it in a day.

Kyra is a young woman with a past that she has moved beyond in the last year. She is making better choices and gaining more responsibility and trust from her family even though she doesn’t think she deserves that trust. But she is slowly starting to believe she deserves it though. Kyra gets a once in a lifetime chance to go on tour with the most popular boy band out there, and even though she doesn’t trust herself, she takes the opportunity. Kyra learns a lot about herself and others while on this tour. She is there for the band and the documentary crew. She steps in on many occasions almost as an advisor or manager. Those moments were a bit hard to believe but they worked. Her ending was fantastic. I was very proud of her and what she accomplished with her interview.

Zach, the band’s lead singer, is struggling with the fame. He wants to do right by his fans and his bandmates (who are also his brother and cousin). He needs a friend and finds that in Kyra. He seems like a genuinely good guy. He doesn’t want scandal or drama. Ben, the band’s troublemaker, is lost. I wish he would have found his way but that wouldn’t have been all that believable because so many child stars don’t find their way. He is childish and a bit vindictive. I wanted to like him, but I couldn’t.

I enjoyed Break It Up as a spinoff to Someone Else’s Fairytale and Nobody’s Damsel. I loved both of those books. It is always fun to read about other characters in series that I have enjoyed. I enjoy getting to know those secondary characters. It makes the picture more complete for me. Did I think this book was as good as those? Not really, but pretty close. I want to read more about all of these characters, that’s for sure!

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book. It is a good “it’s never to late to make a change” book.

Will I read it again: I’m not sure. But Ms. Tippetts is on my must-read author list!

(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

For some reason I had no idea this book was a spin off of Someone Else's Fairytale so when I finally realized it I was pleasantly surprised.

For Kyra she has made some shit choices but once she finally believes in herself and the possibilities of a better life she reforms from her old self but the past always has a way of catching up with you.

For Zach he had been ruled my his mother, expectations, perceptions and so many rules. Him and his fellow band mates finally break free but are floundering to survive in the celebrity world.

Kyra has always had a crush on Zach but is scared of her past.

Zach is so lonely and needs support and assurances.

Together they become friends but the reality of their situation slaps them in the face when they want to move forward with their relationship.

To save face Kyra has to face her past and gain strength in the truth. With this she can finally lead her life with her was head held high and with the hope of love she has always wanted.

E.m. Tippets has a knack at capturing the awkwardness of relationships and the nuances of the early stages of love.

I liked Kyra and Zach a lot but I didn't quite feel the growth or depth of their relationship as I may have liked. The end felt a bit rushed and too perfectly tied up however, that didn't stop me from liking this story and of course the Vanderholts.

little disappointed, but mad love for Kyra she is a well developed strong female character, Liam (i think that his name i just read the book and am not sure) was a complete and utter douchebag cry baby. This book is still worth a read i just think Kyra deserved a MAN not a spoilt little brat that she ended up with but that just me.

3 Unimpressive Stars

As with the preceding Fairytale novels, this one showed so much promise and somewhere along the way it just fell flat. It should be known that Break It Up can be read as a stand-alone, though if you want to catch glimpses of a younger and rowdier Kyra, I would suggest reading them. (More info on the series HERE. ) Also don’t be fooled by the blurb, this is not a love-triangle, not even close, so if that’s what you’re looking for, you may want to look elsewhere.

To be honest I was enjoying this story up until 80%. All of a sudden everything was rushed. Storylines were left unfinished and all the positive storyline, until this point, ceased to be important. Character drama and important plot points were summed up leaving me with more questions than answers. As the end continued to wrap up-and that’s exactly how it felt-I became more and more frustrated. Plain and simple, the ending ruined the book for me. Considering there was numerous grammar/spelling issues and naming the wrong characters in place of another, I managed to get over that, until the dreadful ending.

To sum up the book, Kyra is a reformed, I don’t want to say slut, but let’s say she was once very promiscuous. Not to judge but she was with over two dozen guys and she’s not even twenty. That’s a pretty hefty number for her age and though she’s not exactly proud of her past, she’s turned over a new leaf and for a year has become a new Kyra, one that doesn’t sleep around or even date. Through some familial connections, an acquaintance of Kyra’s invites her to hang with the band Triple Cross. Obviously Kyra won’t say no, they are the hottest boy band nationwide and Kyra can’t help but fan girl over the chance.
Zach Wechsler is the lead singer and everything Kyra could imagine. He’s even more unbelievable in person. It wasn’t stated that Zach was a virgin, but pretty close. I had a very hard time believing this. Not that I’m judging him or anyone in Hollywood, but even though the portrayal of his character came off as innocent it just didn’t feel real.

After being offered a job as an intern with the band Kyra is hesitant to accept. Her feelings for the ‘innocent’ Zach keep her guarded even with a friendship developing between them. Kyra wants to tell Zach about her past, but she doesn’t want him to see her or treat her any differently. As the two grow close while on tour, Ben (Zach’s cousin and fellow band member) stirs things up and starts behaving exactly like a spoiled rock star. Things within the band become volatile and the concert tour that films the band non-stop helps little.

After a few minor setbacks, everything is rushed as I said. I will say there is a HEA, kind-of. I didn’t really see much of a HEA for these two mostly because we don’t get to see much of them actually in a relationship. I can’t really explain it, but if it helps the epilogue takes place only months later instead of years like so many of us enjoy.

Overall I wasn’t a fan of this book. I enjoyed all the characters but aside from Kyra and tidbits from Zach we don’t really know anything about them. It created a large disconnect within my reading. Not to mention this is only Kyra’s POV so everything that’s not shared with us only makes it that much harder to connect with the characters and the story. Kyra’s famous uncle is talked about as much if not more than the band and its members. The band itself is made up of Zach’s cousin Ben and brother Logan. All we know about Ben is that he is rebelling his once strict lifestyle by scoring drugs, chicks and turning up late to performances. His early banter with Kyra was fun but he soon took a dive off ass canyon. Logan is Zach’s brother, honestly, that’s all I know about him. It’s sad because so many things could have been done differently or changed slightly and I would have loved this book. I still stand by the ending ruining it for me.

???---Some unanswered questions---???

One thing I couldn’t fathom was why everyone makes such a big deal of Kyra’s heritage. It seemed like somewhere along the way it would become a bigger deal and it never happened. She was proud of who she was but never really said why or anything really aside from people remarking how hard it must be to grow up mixed… Huh??? This is America, everyone’s mixed… And the fact that she lived in New Mexico and is half Spanish only puzzled me more.

What ever happened to Aidan and his tour film? Everything regarding him was sketchy and it was never clear whether he was actually a good guy or not…

Was Ben the one tipping off the paparazzi about Zach and Kyra? And why did he turn into such a douche-canoe, did he have a crush on Kyra and was acting in jealousy or were his true colors truly that evil?
Ummm, Kyra’s intern job? She just left…. No more job? What about her future now? Her plans?

How can I ever believe there is a HEA here?????

Finally and most importantly IS THE BAND ACTUALLY BROKEN UP.. I mean you think this would be a crucial and vital part of the story but everything just ENDS. Considering the title of the book, this is just sad.

At A Glance
I was going to give this book 2.5 stars until the very end when Kyra gave a "speech" that Blew Me Away!

The Good
Break It Up started out good. I loved the concept. It sounds like a fantasy come true: meeting then working for your favorite musical star. And with Kyra's promiscuous past, it added just the right amount of spice. I loved watching Kyra fall deeper for the "good boy" Zach while trying to hide from the cameras and paparazzi. Because Kyra knows that if she is seen with Zach, then her past will be dug up, and who knows what Zach will think of her then.

The side characters really brought a lot to the table. You never really knew if certain people were bad or good. Some show their true colors in the end and it's both devastating but exciting. I loved to hate these characters. I also loved Kyra's family. They were the most amazing people ever in the world. And her interactions with them either had my heart melting or my sides burning from laughter.

But my favorite part of this book was the end, when all hell breaks loose. I won't get too much into it because I rather it be a surprise, but let's just say, when it was Kyra's time to shine, she sparkled! When it was time to stick up for herself, she did it beautifully. I have never seen someone articulate a response to accusations so well and so perfectly. Everything she said I agreed with and was proud of her for finally saying it. She was inspiring. She faced controversy and hate with bravery and with her head held high. I would be proud to have her as a friend or even as a daughter (when I am much, much older, because, of course, I am super young and barley age ;) )

The Bad
The first thing that hit me wrong was Kyra's negative view of herself. I am all for women expressing themselves sexually. The double standard that guys can sleep around and are praised for it and women are shamed for the same thing is just wrong. I hated that Kyra hide and secretly felt shame for her past. It is her right to want to change her ways and even regret her actions, but her past does not make her bad or less in some way. Luckily, Kyra fixes that in the end, and I felt better about the whole thing.

Zach was sweet sometimes but he was also a douche. He straight up said that women who sleep around are disgusting. What the hell? I don't find men that think that way attractive at all. Zach was also boring. His character was like watching wet paint dry. Then when Kyra went through some horrible things because of her past, Zach was not there for her. He kept quiet about things he knew she had nothing to do with but was being blamed for. Zach was a coward and a child.

The only other thing that bothered me was that the middle of the book was kind of boring. I could easily put the book down. Nothing exciting happens for the longest time.

The Snuggly
I was not rooting for Kyra and Zach. Kyra was a little too obsessed and self-deprecating around Zach, and Zach was a cold fish and narrow-minded. However, by the end, I kind of liked them together. Not even sure why.

No sex, very YA. Though the topic is more new adult.

Final Thoughts
I know it seems like I should have given Break It Up less stars based on my review, but that last "speech" Kyra gave really made me change my mind on the whole book. I actually read that part of the book out loud to my family and friends because I respected it so much. I don't think this book is for everyone, but, by the end, the message it represents is very important for everyone to hear. Recommended for some.

Quotes
"Come on. Sit next to me." He jerked his head in the direction of the table.

My mouth went dry. There was no way I could eat a meal right next to Zach Wechsler. I'd spill my water all over him and get food down my front. He'd probably wonder if I had some kind of seizure disorder.

Sensing my hesitation, he leaned down and looked me right in the eye. "I don't bite."

I liked this one from the start. Kyra is a witty, savvy narrator who takes us on her redemption tale--only to have her whole life go up in tabloid. The low-down: Kyra's mother abandoned her at birth and her father raised her. Despite his best intentions Kyra was a wild child. She carries the baggage of her promiscuous ways, and at 18, is only just seeing the value in valuing herself.

She has a tremendously supportive family, including her step-mother Jen and her step-uncle, Jason Vanderholt--Jen's twin and (also) a movie star. In fact her oblique celebrity through Jason is what gets Kyra and a couple friends invited for dinner with Triple Cross when they layover in Albuquerque. It's problematic, in that Kyra's a fangirl. She's so nervous she's unaccountably shy, which appeals to Zach, soulful center of the band. They sleep together--operative word SLEEP--and not long after Zach begins to text her up.

See, he's kinda lonely. Now that his mother's isolating influence is gone, Zach realizes he doesn't know the first thing about managing his band--or his band mates, brother Logan and cousin Ben. Kyra had been such a good listener over their night together, he continues to lean on her. It's sweet, and not at all sassy. In fact he'd really like Kyra to go on their new European tour to hang out and help out with the tour movie--if she's interested.

Actually Kyra isn't interested. She feels unable to control her attraction for Zach, and senses that he'd never consider her romantically if her knew her sordid sexual history--something Ben makes crystal-clear. Because Ben is all about the bad girls and want Kyra to get on board/on bed (?). It's a twisted love triangle. Int he face of Zach's pleading, and against her better wishes, Kyra caves.

Each step along the way Kyra gets deeper into the murk. Zach clearly has an attraction, and Ben isn't even subtle about his desire. Triple Cross struggles as Ben goes AWOL and shows up late for concerts--only Kyra can rein him in. And the videographers are taking unlimited footage of the wheels coming off this wagon. Meanwhile Kyra's desperate to stay out of the limelight and tabloids. Unsuccessfully.

In truth, I loved the strength that Kyra exhibited in her trial-by-media. For someone so young she behaved in an admirable way. Throughout her redemption she made her boundaries clear, and kept her relationships professional--something few girls in her position might have even contemplated. It's a story of self-love, and finding the strength to succeed when the whole world (quite literally--you should have seen the flame wars!) is against you. While the book is marketed for New Adult, I'd recommend it to older teens and above. It really felt YA to me.

*I received this book for review via Goodreads First Reads*

At first, I couldn’t decide whether to give this book 3 stars or 3.5. I settled on 3.5 because I did overall enjoy it, there were just some aspects of the book that prevented me from giving it more.

As far as the story goes, I must admit I was engrossed by it. I started this book in the early evening and finished it before going to bed. A girl who gets to tour with a hot boy band, who wouldn’t want to be in her place? Sometimes in romance novels, the plot can be quite unbelievable. To the point that when you’re reading it, you’re thinking: “Does this ever happen to someone at all?” And even though this may be just as unlikely to happen, the writing made me feel as if it could.

Now, let’s talk about Kyra, the main character. Kyra is the main reason for the 3.5 star rating. In the first quarter to half of the book, she was just so negative about herself. Okay, every person has doubts about themselves or aspects of their character that they don’t like. But for Kyra, it was taken to a whole new level. Because of things she has done in the past, Kyra feels like she is a bad person. But more than that, it’s like she rejects anything positive in her life, because she would not be “deserving of it”. During the story her character developed a lot, which is definitely a positive aspect. But still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that no one should have such a degrading look of themselves.

As for the love story, this book has both the positive and the negative version of it. On one end, there’s a case of instalove. Yes. The “I have never actually spoken to you but I love you”. No. You can’t love someone without knowing them. But on the other end, there’s a developing friendship that grows into love. That is the part I loved to read the most: how they get to know each other and discover not only each other’s good traits but also the bad.

If you are curious to pick this book up after reading this review, I would definitely say to do so! I enjoyed reading it. It has a fun and engrossing plot and there’s a lot of character development going on, which is always fun to read. I didn’t know what to expect going into it and that is probably the reason why the negative self-image and instalove-part irked me. But if you are aware of these going in, you might even enjoy it even more than I did!

Note: Seeing as Goodreads doesn’t allow half-star ratings, it’s marked as a 3 star-read. But I do give it 3.5 stars.

Kyra used to be the girl with the bad reputation. A reputation she may have earned but she’s trying to redeem herself for her past mistakes. When she gets to meet with the somewhat reclusive but very famous band, Triple Cross, Kyra is a little star struck – and she has met her fair share of A-List celebrities. But Zach Wechsler is different. He’s even better than in Kyra’s fantasies. Can Kyra manage to keep her past a secret and have a chance with the clean cut pop sensation or will things between Kyra and Zach be over before they even cot a chance to began?

If you’ve read Someone Else’s Fairytale or Nobody’s Damsel by Emily Mah Tippetts, Kyra would be familiar to you. Break it Up is a spinoff focusing on Jason’s niece, Kyra. She’s not the wild child she was but rather maturing into a respectable member of society. Kyra owns her own mistakes but is trying to leave it in the past and make something of her future. She’s an interesting character. I liked that she didn’t judge others for their actions because she’d been there, done that and it wasn’t her place remark on how they choose to live their lives. Her relationships with her family was great to read about. Whilst this book can be read as a standalone I thought it was interesting to see Kyra’s perception of characters that I had grown to love before from Chloe’s story.

I thought that Triple Cross were fun. Somewhere between One Direction and the Jonas Brothers, they’re three young men who are in the middle of flux. Their mom-ager (mother manager) was recently cut loose and now they’re having to fend for themselves for the first time in their lives. Zach is the ultimate dream boy… and Kyra isn’t immune from his charm. But I found him to be a little immature and he read very young. A little too young for the world wise Kyra. I would have liked him more had he taken a little more responsibility for what was happening to him and his band rather than just hoping something would magically solve all their problems. Romance wise – Kyra and Zach’s chemistry was lovely. They compliment each other so well and I was rooting for them from the start.

It was great to be back in the world EM Tippetts has created. Her characters are three-dimensional – each with their own flaws which makes them that much more relatable and enjoyable to read about. She writes fantastic New Adult novels that are interesting and clean. I enjoyed reading this book and loved that it is a complete story – with no nasty cliffhangers!

I loved Break It Up. Seriously, E.M. Tippetts is one of the few people who can make me care about the lives of people who deal with celebrities. Possibly because she writes about who they really are inside and treats them like real people with slightly different conflicts. I love Chloe and Jason from Someone Else’s Fairytale and Kyra was a favorite character in those books, so I was excited to read her own story.

Kyra had a rough past, but she was getting a lot better, thanks in large part to Chloe, if you’ve read the Someone Else’s Fairytale series. She was offered a unique opportunity to meet one of her favorite bands and somehow, the gorgeous band member she fangirled over instantly connected with her. The catch? Somehow he caught an innocent vibe from her and she was terrified to tell him the truth. While you don’t need to have read the Someone Else’s Fairytale series, if you have, you know just how detrimental the media can be to the lives of the famous. Kyra was well aware of her own past and what the media can do, as they’ve attempted to ruin her uncle’s marriage numerous times.

I loved the conflict because I felt like it was real. Kyra had understandable fears. I liked the way she grew into herself and understood the workings of fame and manipulation and tabloids. She was smart and her advice and insight was helpful to Zach and part of the foundation of their friendship. Plus, Kyra was trying to move on from her past demons, but her situation with a high profile band member had her looking over her shoulder, waiting for her past to catch up to her.

E.M. Tippetts is a wonderful author who writes warm and insightful characters. I connect with them and feel like I really understand them, even though their lives are so alien to me. Her romances are wholesome and are the kind that really emphasize the importance of love, respect, and honesty without being too wholesome. Sex, reputations, substance abuse, and race aren’t subjects that are glossed over or ignored. I love the idea that a story can be full of emotion, life lessons that are worth teaching, and the wholesome attitude I love without being preachy and too innocent and E.M Tippetts pulls off these romances flawlessly.

Chloe and Jason from Someone Else’s Fairytale are one of my favorite contemporary couples, but Kyra and Zach’s story wormed its way into my heart, too. I definitely recommend Break It Up!

This book was amazing! I stayed up late last night finishing it because I couldn't put it down! I haven't read any other books that go with this storyline. This is the first book I've read of E.M. Tippetts!

Kyra has grown up the bad girl. She lost her virginity at a very young age and would give it up to anyone who would give her the time of day. She carried that reputation with her in school as well, but she's decided to change. She realizes that being able to get whatever guy she wants doesn't give her the control she thought it did. So she's on the straight and narrow now.

Somehow she gets the chance to have dinner with the most popular band, Triple Cross. She has had the HUGEST crush on Zach Wechsler for forever! She invites two friends with her and gets ushered into a private dining room with the three members of Triple Cross. While her friends paw and fight over the other two members of Triple Cross, Kyra stands there a little shell shocked. She knows she could so easily fall into her old ways and try to get Zach to sleep with her, but she also knows that Zach's mom has made sure the band has a squeaky clean image. And she doesn't want to ruin that. Things between them are awkward and it seems that Zach at least tries to be nice to her and ease the tension, but Kyra knows this didn't go how she thought it would.

Fast forward a bit and Kyra is offered the opportunity to tour with Triple Cross in order to film a movie. The guy in charge wants her to be his intern. A war is waged within herself on whether this is something she should do or not. She's tried so hard to leave her past behind, but being that close to Zach may put her in a position to be bad. And it's not like Zach would like her anyways if he knew her past. Can she keep it together and get through this while learning a little bit about the film industry?

I absolutely fell in love with both Kyra and Zach. They're both vulnerable, but yet so strong. And it seems like life isn't always fair. You get to dive into the reasons behind why the other two members of Triple Cross act the way they do. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to a friend. Heck, even a stranger! (I've been known to do that in book stores! HAHA!). I give it five stars!

Oh did I love this book! I think it's E.M. Tippetts's best book to date, by far - which is saying a LOT! It's a standalone book with a new POV heroine, but it's related to her earlier books Someone Else's Fairytale and Nobody's Damsel. After reading the first few chapters of this book and loving them, I was so intrigued by references to those earlier story lines, I actually stopped and read the earlier books first, before coming back to Break It Up. I didn't need to - I definitely could have enjoyed the whole book without that background - but it was even more fun to have seen the heroine, Kyra, as a developing side character in those earlier books before reading and cheering on her own story here.

I want to rave about how empowering and feminist the message of this book is (because it is!), but I don't want to give the wrong impression. It's not at all didactic - it's a fantastically fun novel (part romance, part self-empowerment-journey) about a girl who gets the chance to work the European tour of her favorite band, falling in love with the lead singer on the way.

But it's also about the horrific double standard when it comes to girls and their sexual experiences. Kyra was a very emotionally messed-up younger teen, who became very promiscuous as part of that, and now that she's turned her life around, she's battling massive fallout from her earlier years. She starts out the novel really hating herself in a lot of ways, and watching her bloom and triumph by the end - and realize what a strong, fantastic person she really is - is just so emotionally powerful.

This book has all the addictive, fun fantasy elements of the earlier novels in this series, but it's even more tightly written, in terms of plot, writing style, and thematic resonance, and Kyra's voice is incredibly compelling. She's my favorite New Adult heroine I've read from any author, and my favorite EM Tippetts heroine so far.

This was a really fun novel to read AND a really powerful novel to read - a perfect combination!

I'll admit, I only signed up to review this book because I liked the author's previous work and the cover caught my interest. Who doesn't love boy bands? But I was pleasnatly surprised when I started reading and found out it was a companion novel to the Someone Else's Fairytale books. You don't need to have read the first two to understand this one, but I think it would help you understand where the characters are coming from if you did.

Kyra was a very refreshing character because she already knows who she is. She goes through a change in the second book so by the time she gets to this one she's a reformed rebellious teenager and she's confident in that. I loved that there was this underlying theme throughout the book about double standards. Kyra is seen as promiscuous in earlier books, but when Ben does the same thing people just think he's a party boy. And it was nice to see someone touch on that topic without making it feel preachy.

The main love interest, Zach, was really great because he developed as a character too. It was just as much his story as Kyra's. He's so sweet and innocent, yet he's very judgmental. I summed that up to him not really having any social interactions with peers because his mom kept him really sheltered since she was his band manager. But I liked that he had flaws. It made him more real. And it was cool seeing him contrasted next to his cousin, Ben, who was so different. Ben = Kyra's past and Zach=what Kyra was trying to make her future. The whole time I was wondering if she'd just give up on Zach and go have fun with Ben. Because while I did want to smack him sometimes, he did have a charm to him. Like he needed to be saved from himself.

If you liked Between the Lines by Tamera Webber, I think you'd really like this book. They're very similar in that it's a behind the scenes of a celebrities life and relationships. But really any contemp lover would probably enjoy this.

I did a video review that basically says the same thing, but in case anyone wanted to watch: http://youtu.be/nwc2GmvWSX0

I have to admit something, I didn't realize the main character in this book appears in E.M. Tippetts other books, as Jason Vanderholt’s niece in Someone Else’s Fairytale and Nobody’s Damsel. Had I known that, I would have read those two first. Although this was good without reading the others, I think it would have been a "great" had I read them. I couldn't understand why Kyra was acting like her past was such a HUGE deal, when it didn't seem that way to me. She had changed, Zach liked her for who she is now, not who she was. Bits and pieces of her past were described, but I felt there had to be more to it.

I loved Kyra. She had Zach and the entire band's best interests at heart. Triple Cross had recently fired their overly controlling manager, who happened to be Zach and Logan's mom. Now, there was some tension as to what they band should do and the image they wanted to portray. Things were not going smoothly, each member trying to do what they felt they wanted, but not working together as a team anymore.

Zach was incredibly lonely. He doesn't have anyone he can really talk to, until he meets Kyra at a dinner in Albuquerque. The connection is instant. They develop a great friendship, she wants more, so much more. She's afraid that Zach won't be interested in even being her friend if he finds out about her past, so she never tells him about it. From the beginning, you could tell that Kyra was fighting her attraction to Zach. The band hired a producer to make a documentary about them and Kyra was invited to be an intern with the crew.

Like is true in real life, hiding things comes back to bite her in the butt. Just when things are going so well between them, they have finally crossed that line from friends to something more, the truth comes out. Zach is more hurt by her not telling him the truth. Can he get past it? Read and find out.

I was given an ARC of this book as part of a blog tour in return for an honest review

Was steckt wirklich dahinter?
