雁屋哲 Manga writer and essayist extraordinaire Tetsu Kariya graduated from prestigious Tokyo University. The worlds of food and manga were forever changed in 1983 when Kariya, together with artist Akira Hanasaki, created the immensely popular and critically acclaimed Oishinbo.
Generally funny, enjoyable stories! A few hardcore ones emotionally (the apple pie/tea one...oof) and, unexpectedly, politically (the lemons one literally saying "The Japanese government, in order to profit off of cars and electronics, is sacrificing their citizen's health"!! And a more in-the-weeds discourse about clam preservation vs. irrigation, but definitively against habitat destruction. I went online to check if those little yamato shijimi are alright! They seem to be, phew....And an overfishing one! Was there some kind of Earth Day special series?) Very interesting window into the Japanese perspective of their economic boom and of the environmental issues at the time.
