My students are currently learning what Halloween is and the history of it. This book was perfect for an introductory book on that topic.
This book explains what a pumpkin patch is, what are costumes, the day of the dead and so much more. This book is easy to follow with its full-color illustrations and simple easy-to-grasp text.
This National Geographic books focuses on a very popular holiday, Halloween. It talks about what is is, shares fun facts about it, tells about lots of Halloween traditions, and many more fun facts. The book even includes fun costume ideas for kids, and dogs too! There are hints to help decorate your house, and facts from when Halloween first started and how it is celebrated in different places around the world. I liked this book, it was very informative and had lots of fun facts. It was interactive and asked questions throughout, there were also little jokes and quizzes throughout the book that all related to Halloween. I found it very interesting and fun and full of lots of awesome facts that children would enjoy. This book would be great for someone doing a project on Halloween, or fun to read to the class before Halloween and have them answer the question and share what they are dressing up as, or what their favorite Halloween candy is.
Summary: This book was all about Halloween. It goes through different things such as trick-or-treating, costumes, pumpkin picking, jack-o-lanterns, painting pumpkins, spooky homes, and more. It provides information on all things Halloween!
Evaluation: I really liked this book because it provides kids with nonfiction information about Halloween. Halloween is a huge holiday when you are a kid so I think getting information about it that is factual is a big deal.
Teaching Idea: I would use this book when Halloween came around. I would specifically touch on the parts about pumpkin picking and discuss the life cycle of pumpkins and how when it is cut from the vine it is no longer living anymore.
I think this book is a great book to kickstart halloween festivities with young kids. It tells all the fun facts about halloween anyone could know and it makes to be a fun lesson before trick or treating. With reading this book you are able to create lesson plans that go along with it and create activities around the classroom to make the learning more fun and have everyone excited about it.
I gave this book 4 stars because as it teaches about halloween it is also a fun book to read. As I said you can create so many activities from this book to get kids excited to learn about this holiday since most kids also don't even want to be in class on halloween.
Another book that talks about Halloween activities and Halloween history. But it doesn't really actually talk about either. Goes into no detail about anything. Just mention oh yeah kids dress in costumes. It's fun, right? No illustrations but photographs instead. The pumpkin field picture is nice. And there is a page about the Day of the Dead which is kind of interesting except that it says "Oh yeah there is another day called Day of the Dead but that's different from this one and people do things differently". Really there is no real thing you learn from this book. NOr any real joy to it.
Excellent photographs will appeal to children. Much of the information is known to most children who celebrate Halloween. A few interesting facts include. Excellent layout.
I love the photographs and the information in the National Geographic books. They catch the eye of my students who are quick to pick these books for information.
Summary: This book talks about the different parts of Halloween. It talks about things such as trick or treating, the costumes that people dress up in, pumpkin picking, painting pumpkins, and more.
Evaluation: I think that this is a great book for kids to be able to read on their own and find more out about Halloween than they may have already known. Kids are usually super excited about Halloween and all the festivities that surround it so I feel that this would really be something that sparks their attention.
Teaching Idea: This book could be used around Halloween to talk about where a pumpkin comes from and the life cycle of a pumpkin.
1. This book has not won any awards. 2. This book is appropriate for children Pre-K - 3rd grade 3. This is an informational text about Halloween. The book explores different aspects of Halloween, including traditions as well as providing background information on October 31 and pumpkins. 4. This book communicates information in a clear and fun approach. The book includes traditions such as trick or treating, dressing up in costumes, pumpkin picking, jack o'lanterns/painting pumpkins, pet parade and decorating homes. I like how this book also covers “the day of the dead” as a different way of celebration but having similarities to Halloween. 5. This book would serve as a great model for teaching text features. This could be useful in teaching children about traditions that are not familiar with Halloween.
