Rate this book
A new handbook on Greek mythology that aims at making the myths of the ancient Greeks accessible to all. Many phrases borrowed from Greek mythology are widely known, such as the Oedipus complex or the heel of Achilles. But where do these phrases come from? In this book, the stories of the ancient Greeks are not simply summarized: they are also placed in their proper cultural-historical context and the ancient sources for each tale are explicitly given.

The emphasis in this book is on the older sources for Greek mythology, dating from the Archaic and Early Classical periods (eighth to fifth centuries BC), since the author believes these to be more closely related to (near-)contemporary oral traditions and folk tales. The myths are dealt with in a more or less chronological order, from the primeval gods and Titans to the Olympians, and from the earliest humans to Perseus, Heracles, Jason and the Argonauts, Oedipus, and the Trojan War.
