Not the genre I usually read, but I liked it. The story is fast-paced, it’s only a couple of days long in the book and a lot of events happen after each other. Sometimes it felt that time wise it was too much. That it should take more time than the hour or couple of hours that it took in the book. This however didn’t hinder the story for me.
The book is filled with dark humor, which is fun and gives the story a bit extra. The women are strong characters and they can hold their own. The men are either jerks or good guys. I loved the twists and turns in the story. Although I guessed very early on who Milo was. But that didn’t bother me in enjoying the story.
A Clever Farce In a twist on the crime thriller genre, The HitMom is a raucous black comedy romp stuffed full of pop culture references, scatological humor, stupefying coincidences, and the inevitable happy ending. To quote the narrator, “In an all-star performance, Chelsea (i.e., the HitMom) got fired and found her husband cheating. She came out swinging in the second round and knocked out her boss and his partner in a fatal one-two punch. Her husband Matt took one on the chin in the third round, and she completed a Cinderella victory by landing a police detective as her new beau!”
What I liked about the book was the novel premise of a soccer mom turned mob assassin, the fast and fun narration, and the insight into 2023 childrearing, as the author relates “all of them sharing the trials and tribulations of raising kids in the era of memes, iPads, and the incessant con-artistry of freemium games.” This book is crafted to be funny in every chapter and paragraph, with even detectives moonlighting as groan-inducing stand-up comedians, and snarky banter in every dialogue. What I didn’t care for was the foreshadowing which telegraphed the ending to me in the first section of the book.
This is an adult comedy with humorous depictions of sexual and violent situations. If you are seeking a light, laugh along story where, as the bard says, “all’s well that ends well,” this is a great read.
I absolutely loved this book! It is filled with humor, crime and a little bit of romance. The plot was well developed. I especially liked watching Chelsea go from a married, working mom, to a single, cop dating hitmom. The characters were easy to fall in love with and funny. There were many plot twists that I wasn't expecting. This book kept me guessing and engaged from page 1. I can't wait to check out more books from this author!
The Hitmom by R.D. Trimble Genre: mystery/ thriller, comedy fiction Rating: 4⭐️
Chelsea’s keeping it together, but her life is not what she pictured it to be. Her husband has passed tragically, she’s remarried to a narcissist with a couple kids, and her job is full of chauvinists. What is a spunky ginger like her to do?
On an outing with her friend to vent her frustrations, EVERYTHING changes. Only then does she realize what she’s capable of: and how much she enjoys it.
This book was a joy to read. The protagonist was relatable and charming. Every woman has a touch of darkness, but Chelsea seems to capitalize and carry out what we dream of doing in especially trying circumstances. This book is witty, lively, and will keep you on your toes. Looking forward to more from R.D Trimble. A job well done.
The only book that made me laugh out loud was "Me talking pretty one day" by David Sedaris, I can't think of any other book, but this book did that for me. It was dark and hilarious with super fast-paced that you can totally read it in one sitting. I love the idea of the title mentioned in the very beginning.
When you say, "I need an unputdownable book," i think this is it. I would recommend this if you want to read something hilarious and dark with a witty protagonist. I had a great time reading it.
Stop the presses, this is a FIRST! I actually LAUGHED OUT LOUD multiple times while reading this book. The snappy dialogue (especially between husband and wife) had me giggling. This was a fun, fast read. Be prepared for some crude language.
📚 Book Review 📚 Book: The Hitmom Author: R. D. Trimble Genre: Crime-fiction, Thriller Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #bookloungereviewteam
The Hitmom is a crime-fiction thriller packed with action, dark comedy, and deadly confrontations. It starts with Chelsea McGovern, the mother of two, waking up on an eventful day and soon finding that her marriage is falling apart, that she has been fired from her job, and that she has no money. Could things get any worse? You bet they can. After eating dinner at a nice restaurant and venting to her best friend Pam, they were on their way to the car when Chelsea accidentally bumped into a very large, mean-looking character with an attitude. The man immediately starts with the insults, leading to a physical altercation between Chelsea and the large man. Little did the man know that Chelsea was a master in the martial arts, and soon the man was disabled and stunned. Reaching into his briefcase, he retrieved a gun, only to be disarmed by Chelsea, and in the skirmish, he is shot dead. Chelsea learn that the man killed was a hitman for the mob, and Chelsea is offered the opportunity to take his place as Hitmom. This book was a refreshing light on the crime-drama thrillers I am used to reading. The characters were well written, witty, at times comical, and never dull. The action just kept coming, and I was never sure where it was going to lead. The plot was full of killer suspense, tension, high emotions, and romance. The author did a fabulous job of developing a plot that flowed effortlessly into a world of hidden uncertainties and dangers, all the while laughing at the banter between characters. This was an easy and entertaining read, something different, in many ways. I would recommend this book for fans of witty, out-of-the-box crime dramas.
"Now she had risen as an emotionally indestructible phoenix who could deal out better cards than she was dealt."
Bare with me, as this is my first review. First and Foremost, I want to thank Rhonda and the author for this opportunity. Just finished this book. It took a little over 24 hours. It was a fun and entertaining read. With a dash of dark humor (Dee's Nuts About Coffee was a personal fave), a helping of crime, and a sprinkle of love it was an exhilarating ride. Best part was I could relate with the character. What's better than a soccer mom turned hitmom? In fact, as i was reading a good bit of the first part my kids were running around the house screaming and destroying things. We meet Chelsea who's your everyday mom with a mundane life (an an a$$ of a husband.) Her world gets turned upside down. Through an unfortunate event we see her transform into this strong femme fatale. She "discovers assertiveness that has been vacant within her for too long." We follow her on her journey to eliminate each "mark." You never know how she will "off" them. Throw in a pissed off female nemesis and you got chaos, and wow what an ending 🤯💣. You'll have to read it for the rest. I would say Mr. Trimble's work is much like one of my favorite thriller authors....John Marrs. Its not too gory and just the right amount of blood. Ive told several friends about this book, and some are interested to read it. The only downside is the way poop is mentioned (in abundance) and described in a couple scenes.
I leave you with a couple quotes: "But I want to do you right now. Yeah, right, a lie and a quickie shorter than Disneyland's Peter Pan Ride."
"If you want to be a worthless s#it, you can sit on the toilet. Your a$$ will fit better that way."
"The Hitmom" by R.D. Trimble is a crime fiction novel with clever twists. It tells the shocking tale of Chelsea McGovern, soccer mom turned assassin. She fights for her family, and for herself, in tumultuous circumstances. She maintains her quick wit, and wry sense of humor, to outsmart the villains.
Throughout this wildly entertaining story are thrilling escapades measured with snappy dialogue and beats of comedy. Modern backdrops with true to life imagery keeps the reader in the story at all times. Even when one of the characters is being obnoxious in the best ways!
The put-downs are a highlight of Chelsea's inner tough guy. "...and stood over Cal's corpulent, quivering mass. "I would love to stay and share more fun facts, but your trousers smell like a tuna and Funyuns sandwich..."
Chapters are short and filled with thrilling energy. Part Three opens up with this quote: "...Saguaro Hills bar. Chelsea will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy... and mullets."
A surprising hero, dynamic action, a complicated romance, hilarious scenes, tension filled dialogue; all these make "The Hitmom" the ultimate page turner.
With a dark comedic premise of a down-on-the-luck woman triggered to unleash her inner demons in what some might view as a natural start to reclaiming her dignity, this should be a book that is snappy and 'wink-wink' entertaining. In needing to suspend disbelief to some extent to really embrace the narrative premise, the reader is also made to assume that some of the more glaring logic holes are deliberate sleights for surprise reveals later in the book.
But such follow-thru's are rare - one especially odd omission refers to a listening bug slipped into this woman's inner wear, but is never explained nor noticed. This expectation by the author also happens to be the story's biggest weakness - as the written medium will unfortunately leave the reader shaking the head at incongruities, especially upon returning to earlier pages.
On a more positive note, such a problem should not arise if this novel is consumed as an audio book instead as the one-liners are fine when not strung together overmuch.
Title: The Hitmom Author: R.D Trimble Genre: Fiction, Dark Comedy, Crime
Chelsea, a widow with 2 children from a wonderful marriage, is remarried to narcissistic prick and has one of the worst days of her life. But it was self-defense! This kind of day is one that will change her life; her relationships, her friendships, her profession. Who knew what this firey redhead was capable of!? Go, Mom! I really enjoyed this book! It has some pretty dark humor, which is right up my alley and some plot twists that kept me guessing.

I really like the plot of this story. However, I couldn't wrap my head around the time frames. It would take hours for some of the things to happen in real life but in the book it took a couple hours. Chelsea is lucky detective Dan Bryant liked her and didn't turn her in for the murders she committed. How all the characters intertwined. Chelsea's husband Matt's whole background surfaced and what a douchebag he was before her and after his cheating on her. The twist and turns will make people really invested in wanting to know more. The typos were distracting but didn't ruin the book.
Not your average book. Basically your "average mom" loses her shit after her world gets turned upside down and things quickly take a sideways turn. It's not a mystery exactly, but it does have some twists and turns in there that you're not expecting.
There's adult themes and obviously violence but it's not graphic so for me no trigger warnings needed. Some people may find some of the language off putting, but I didn't. This is a book for 17+.
It did have some twists in there with characters and introductions that had me a little confused, so I had to go back and reread some things. Overall it was an ok book. 3/5.
The Hitmom is a thriller mixed with comedy. Chelsea, a suburban mom, loses her job and discovers her husband’s affair all on the same day. Fueled by betrayal, she channels her frustrations into a series of violent incidents. This book turns into a wild ride of coincidences.
The fast, witty narration kept me entertained. I especially loved the Krav Maga nods, which stood out to me as a black belt in karate. The book is crammed with pop-culture jokes and an abundance of poop references.
However, I was confused by a few plot holes. A listening device that gets planted and then is never mentioned again. The foreshadowing seemed to nod to the ending early in the book.
If you're looking for a quick palette cleanser, this book is for you.
It's a fun and fast-paced story of Chelsea, suburban mom turned mob assassin as a result of having the worst day of her life. This day sets off a series of violent, unfortunate events that are fueled by her betrayal. The author does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and making the day to day life relatable. The book has witty banter between the characters and with the dark humor, references of 80's and 90's pop culture, a sprinkling of spice, and mentions of poop, I had some real laugh out loud moments. It was a welcomed change of reading for me.
The Hitmom is a dark comedy crime novel, You meet the main character Chelsea on one of the worst days of her life, and through a series of almost comedic errors ends up on the wrong side of the law. The story is full of black humour and juvenile jokes which did make me laugh out loud at times. it's fast paced and wittily written. It's littered with pop culture references which makes you feel part of the story. Chelsea embraces the dark side we all have and often would love to show. The plot twists were interesting and I didn't see them coming at all.
The Hitmom is a quick fast-paced and fun novel that will keep you engaged & excited to see what happens next. The chapters are short, making the novel go quick but doesn’t lack any entertainment. The novel is also packed full of dry humor.
I would recommend this to readerthat enjoyed shows like married with children, All in the family, Everyone loves Raymond, Wanda vision (humor wise), etc.
A dark tale of crime with a twist of humor....about a MOM!?!?! Sign me up!!! This book was a wild ride from start to finish. Poor Chelsea's life is falling apart, but once she gets an opportunity she can 't refuse, things take a deadly, and yet hilarious, twist. You can't help but root for Chelsea as she goes full Rambo on some bad guys, taking out everyone in her path. But she never lets you forget that she's not just a hit woman...she's a MOM.
This book was such a wild, hilarious, and thrilling ride! Chelsea’s transformation from a down-on-her-luck mom to a bold, unstoppable force had me grinning and cheering. The mix of dark humor, crime, and pure determination made it impossible to put down. I loved every twist, every laugh, and every shocking moment. It’s bold, unexpected, and completely addictive definitely one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in a while!
I had so much fun reading this! Chelsea’s bad day turns into the most thrilling, darkly funny adventure. The blend of humor, crime, and self-discovery made the story so engaging. She’s tough, smart, and surprisingly relatable despite the wild circumstances. Every chapter brought something new and unexpected. I finished it in one sitting it’s fast-paced, laugh-out-loud funny, and full of unforgettable moments. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves quirky thrillers.
What a ride! Chelsea’s story is equal parts hilarious, gritty, and empowering. I loved watching her go from completely defeated to owning her power in the most unexpected way. The dark humor gave me so many laugh-out-loud moments, and the action kept me hooked. Every twist felt fresh and exciting.
