There is only one thing to fear...
To become a warrior without fear.
[Hisagi]

The center of Bleach's Volume 38 is the topic of warrior - who the warrior is and who must they be. On the focus are events happening in the Karakura Town. With Yumichika's victory over Chuhlhourne, one of the four pillars protecting the city is secured. Hisagi, Kira and Ikkaku are currently fighting to secure the other three pillars.

"Fighting isn't heroic. It's not meant to be exhilarating. Violence should only bring despair. It's dark and terrifying. It must remain gruesome, otherwise people won't fear it and try to avoid it." [Kira]

Kira's opponent is in his Resurrection form, being a big bird with wings as heavy as steel. Kira seems to having quite a hard time, using only Kido spells instead of his sword. But the answer to the question why didn't he draw his Zanpakuto comes rather quickly. His sword's ability is special and it matches Abirama's powers. To secure his victory, all Kira needed to do was to somehow bring the bird down so he could touch his wing with his sword. It was endgame from there.

"You asked what I intended to cut with this silly-looking blade."
"W-Wait!"
"A warrior should never beg for his life."

For someone like Kira who never seemed like someone who enjoyed fighting and who came from the Third Company, delivering such a finishing blow like he did against Abirama is something really shocking to see. I never thought of Kira as a cold person, in the contrary. I could never quite figure him out, but he never seemed merciless. The end of his fight against Abirama shows us his dark side. He didn't need to do what he did. His opponent was already down, completely hopeless and completely at his mercy. All he needed was just to leave, but he made a different decision. I know that Abirama was an enemy. I know that he would (probably) kill Kira if he had an opportunity to do so. But, despite that, I still felt a deep sorrow seeing his death. It was bloody. It was brutal. No one deserves such an ending.

Anyways, with Kira's victory only two pillars remained to secure: the Hisagi's one and the Ikkaku's one.

"So that's your Zanpakuto, Shuuhei Hisagi."
"Yes. This is Kazeshini, my Zanpakuto. Although I don't like it very much."
"What do you mean?"
"Just what I said. I don't like the shape. Look at it. It's shaped like something designed to take lives."

First of all, I have to admit that the Hisagi vs Findorr fight is one of my favorites in Bleach. The choreography, the visuals and the music (especially the music! It's "Fade to Black B13a" by Sagisu Shiro, which is one of my favorite Bleach OST tracks)- everything is perfect in the anime and it's also perfect in the manga. Second of all, despite the fact that Kazeshini (Hisagi's Zanpakuto) is a reaper, it's my favorite lieutenant weapon. Third of all, the relationship between Hisagi and Kazeshini is certainly one of the most interesting ones in Bleach. There isn't any other Soul Reaper displeased with his weapon, but Hisagi clearly is, which is very strange considering the fact that Kazeshini is a part of him. In the Soul Reapers' case, 'I am the blade and the blade is me' thing is 100% real, because the they share one soul with their weapons. They are like a one living being just split into a human and a blade.

P.S. I'm wondering now what kind of dangerous traits is Hisagi hiding from the world if his Zanpakuto is a bloodthirsty reaper 😨

"So you're not afraid of your own strength or your enemy's. Figures. Those who don't fear the blades they wield don't deserve to wield them." [Hisagi]

Hisagi's a lieutenant that was serving under Tousen before Tousen's betrayal. Tousen, as one of Hisagi's authorities, taught him that a warrior needs to feel fear of his blade in the fight, because if not, he doesn't deserve to be a warrior. In the middle of the fight Hisagi admits that he's afraid, while his opponent, convinced of his own strength, only laughs at it. But it's Hisagi - the man who felt fear - won the fight, despite the fact that all he had on his disposal was the power of a lieutenant (while Findorr had the power of a captain).

Anyways, with Hisagi's victory another pillar is secured. The only person still fighting is Ikkaku - the one that couldn't fail. But then something totally unexpected happens - Ikkaku fails and the real Karakura Town starts to come back.

"It was your duty to protect the pillar, but you allowed it to be destroyed. Do you know why? It's because you held back. You're welcome to get yourself killed on your own account. However, duty must always come first! And never allow your personal stubbornness to undermine the company's mission. Orders of the thirteen guard companies are absolute. They must be carried out, even if it means swallowing your pride!" [Tetsuzaemon]

This is the issue I briefly mentioned in my previous review, when Yumichika made a similar stunt against Chuhlhourne. Both Yumichika and Ikkaku are a part of Squad 11 - Zaraki's freaks who are crazy about fighting. And both Yumichika and Ikkaku are purposely hiding their true strength, because of the fear of being kicked out of the Squad. Here is the deal: while their loyalty to Zaraki and their need to fight on his side is truly admirable, I agree with Tetsuzaemon here - their needs shouldn't matter in the face of the duty. Their mission was to protect the pillars and they should have done everything that's possible to do so. Yumichika won only because he had the opportunity to use his real strength without anyone's (except for his opponent's) notice. He would've very easily end up like Ikkaku if it wasn't for, well, pure luck. Both Yumichika and Ikkaku knew how important their mission was - that the lives were on the stake - and purposely ignored it just because they didn't want to show their real strength. That was very egoistical of them and, with all my love and respect for Ikkaku's character, I was glad to see him being punched by Tetsuzaemon. That punch was well deserved.

"Attack! Defend this ground with all your might! Even if your flesh is torn from your bones, the enemy must not enter!" [Genryuusai]

Only after the battles of the pillars had ended, the Soul Reaper warriors and Aizen's warriors decided to move. With the three treacherous captains being held captive by Genryuusai's flames, it was up to the three remaining Espadas to lead the war. Stark and Lilinette stood up against Kyoraku and Ukitake, Soi Fon and Omaeda stood against two of Barragan's Fracciones, and Matsumoto and Hitsugaya choose Halibel and her girls.

It seems like the real war will finally start, but will our heroes win? What about Hueco Mundo, what is happening there? Is Ichigo still alive? Is Orihime finally saved? We will see in the next volume!

Some of my thoughts while reading:

~ Did I say that Hisagi is hot? Because he's hot.
~ I'm surprised that the volume didn't had any flashback of Hisagi's time spend with Tousen.
~ I really liked that Yumichika, after sensing that Ikkaku was down, immediately tried to fly to his side and help (but was held down by Hisagi and Kira). Their dynamic is one of my favorites in Bleach. A very precious friendship.
~ I can't believe what Poww's Zanpakuto was so small while his Resurrection form so enormous!
~ Komamura was so cool in this volume!
~ "It's starting, Matsumoto. Is there any doubt in your heart?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Never mind."
- it was a very clear reference to Gin and it made me so sad 😔
~ I never realized it, but Ggio IS handsome too 😳
~ The fight between Omaeda and Mamut (I have no idea what his name is, I'm sorry) was as hilarious in the manga as it was in the anime and I'm looking forward to its continuation in the next volume 😆

Bleach, Vol. 38 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (323–331) of the on-going manga series.

Izuru Kira and Shūhei Hisagi successfully defeat their opponents. However, Ikkaku Madarame's pride of not showing his Bankai in public leads to his defeat as Choe Neng Poww destroys one of the four pillars protecting Karakura Town with Squad Seven Lieutenant Tetsuzaemon Iba managing to stop the town from returning. Before Ikkaku is killed, Sajin Komamura confronts Poww and easily defeats him with his Bankai.

With the four Arrancars attacking Karakura dead, the top three Espada and their Fracciones confront the Soul Reaper Captains and their Lieutenants. While Rangiku Matsumoto faces Tier Harribel's three Fracciones, Tōshirō Hitsugaya confronts Harribel herself. Meanwhile Captain Soi-Fong and her Lieutenant Marechiyo Ōmaeda fight Baraggan Louisenbairn's remaining two Fracciones Ggio Vega and Nirgge Parduoc with Ōmaeda managing to knock out his opponent.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. It continues Sōsuke Aizen's incursion of Karakura Town with he, Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōse still trapped in Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto fire vortex. With them trapped, Soul Society has easily defeated the Arrancars and now facing the Espada they came with.

All in all, Bleach, Vol. 38 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

More assistant captain's fighting, not as good as the last issue for me but still solid. Nice to see other characters getting their moment. Sad to see my boy Ikkaku in the mud as I really like him.

The Fracciones continue their battles with the assistant captains and captains of the Souls Society. They're all matched up with somewhat similar adversaries as new and old faces get the chance to display their quirky personalities and terrifying powers.

The entire volume was thus focused on these battles without pushing the plot forward in any way possible. I believe things will remain this way for a little longer too.

This story is heating up. The fight for the world of the living is on. Kira, Hisagi, and Yumichika finished off their enemies. They were able to defeat them because of their zanpakto. The only one that lost in their fight was Ikkaku. Captain Komamura helps Ikkaku defeat his enemy. Showing the fraccione that was fighting with Ikkaku a lesson. Barragan is made that all his subordinates lost. He sent out even more. Now Haliebel, Stark, and the other fracciones join the battle. This is starting to get even more fun. :)

Bleach, Volume 38: Fear for Fight opens with Izuru kicking some major boo-TAY. He always conveys a sweet demeanor, so it was a wonderful surprise seeing his badass side when he put Abirama Redder to shame.

On the other side of Karakura town, Shūhei Hisagi battles Findorr Calius. I was getting annoyed with all the "exacta" crap, and laughed to myself when Shūhei said what I was thinking.

While I enjoy these non-ranking Soul Reapers display their abilities, the fight scenes were just okay. The lack of oomph has more to do with the villains than with the Soul Reapers. I found the bad guys to be annoying or boring. I'm looking forward to the Espadas stepping in to get their hands dirty. Tite Kubo is probably saving the good stuff for later, hopefully, when the Vizards arrive.

There is an intense moment when a pillar is destroyed, and the fate of one of the Soul Reapers is teetering. Captain Komamura rushes to aid his fallen comrade and boy, oh boy, is it awesome! This is what makes the captains so much more exciting.

And with that, the battle between the Soul Reaper captains and the Arrancars has begun!

Although the battles in this volume aren't amazing, I think the caliber of fighting will be phenomenal in the next few volumes. This one set up for a battle with Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Tier Hallibel, which I'm looking forward to. We're getting closer to our favorite captains battling it out with the Espadas. I can't wait!!

The battle of the lieutenants versus the Fracciones continues. Kira is unimpressed by his opponent’s steel wings. It’s time to show this guy what Kira’s Wabisuke can do. Hisagi’s opponent is Findorr, who keeps dumbing down his skills in order to match Hisagi’s level, which he finds infuriating… and not necessary. Also, Hisagi is beyond tired of the way Findorr keeps saying Exacta. Time to end this thing.

To the Soul Reapers’ dismay, one of the four pillars collapses. Have they lost a comrade? Yumichika wishes to rush to his friend’s side, but Hisage stops him. Ikkaku is not down for the count, as his opponent, Poww, learns. But Poww isn’t done either, and he is a very big boy, even bigger than Captain Komamura. But the captain has a trick or two up his own sleeve.

Iba berates Ikkaku for his loss and accuses him of holding back and deliberately losing. Of course, Ikkaku doesn’t take the accusation well. Meanwhile, as King Berrigan prepares to send in the next group, to replace those who have been defeated, he is confronted by more of the Soul Reapers, and the battle begins anew! Old man Yamamoto exhorts them to “Defend this ground with all your might! Even if your flesh is torn from your bones, the enemy must not enter!” To which, Shunsui’s response to Ukitake is “Oh dear, it makes me tense to be around old man Yama when he’s like this….”

This volume of Bleach continues the battles from the previous book and then some. Definitely action-packed! One thing I like about Bleach is that it’s not an automatic win for the good guys, ever, and sometimes they do lose. And sometimes they do stupid things. That only goes to show how well Tite Kubo draws his characters, fleshes them out until they become real people. I love that he infuses his writing with a great deal of humor, such as Shunsui’s comment above, and the banter between Matsumoto and the three female Fracciones she faces, as well as the relationship between Sai Fon and Omaeda. I guess my only real complaint is his tendency to draw most of his women with exaggerated busts, which I find unnecessary. But in all fairness, I am probably not the target demographic he is aiming for.

Another great volume of Bleach, even with no sign of Ichigo. But you’ll remember we left him rescuing Orihime so it’s just a matter of time until we return to that. Looking forward to the next one!

A kind of a 'meh' volume. A lot of action and not a lot of plot development. The best part of it was probably the rumble between Aizen's soldiers and the various Soul Society captains/vice-captains near the end of the volume. Other than that, not much to write home about. Although reading Madarame and his section squabble was cute in an odd way.

An expanded review of this and the latest volumes of Naruto and One Piece will be up later tonight at my blog: http://nagareboshi-reviews.blogspot.com/

This series is getting like Dragon Ball Z to me...too much fighting, stilted dialogue, lack of character development or the plot moving forward. I'm going to try one more and then give up on Bleach. I really liked it at first but it's just getting too repetitive.

Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.

Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56 - Rating: 7/10
(The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes)
- A fun introduction.
-An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows)
-Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on.
-It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.

Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10
-The height of Bleach
-Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff.
-The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc.
-The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism.
-Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.

Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10
-This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10.
-The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies.
-Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach.
-However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool.
-This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.

The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10
-A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad.
-When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it.
-That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.

The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10
-And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing.
-That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections.
-Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty.
-There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming.
-Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights.
-It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.

This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.

I love that there are some fights this late in the series that are quick and to the point. Good anime and manga fights don't always need to go on for over 10 chapters and many episodes (I like those too but sometimes it's nice to see a fight end in 2 or 3 chapters, short and sweet). It's also good because I know that pretty soon we are going to see the battle between Ichigo and Ulquiorra which is definitely going to be a big fight and some of the captains's fights against the other 3 Espadas are most likely going to be big too, so it's nice to have something less crazy before those.

The assistant captains and captains of Soul Society fights the Fracciones. That's it, that's the entire volume. Does the plot progress? Not really. Are the battles well-choreographed? Nah, they've got some good pages but they don't connect together very well. Are the characters interesting? I guess so, they're condescending and have cool powers- if that counts as interesting then I guess you'll be happy enough. It's the exact same copy-paste fight scenes you've seen dozens of times in Bleach, but this time with some supporting characters you rarely get to see, instead of the main characters who we actually care about.

I liked Kira’s speech about violence and how he isn’t proud to partake in it. Kira finishing off Abirama by cutting off his head is one of my favourite images in this arc. I liked how this volume transitions into the fights between the strongest Captains and some of the strongest Arrancars and Espadas. I liked Ggio Vega’s character design and how he was matched up to fight Soi Fon. I really like Halibel’s team fighting against Hitsugaya’s team. This is the beginning of some of the most interesting fights in this arc, and this volume does a great job at wrapping up the previous fight scenes and gearing up for the next ones.

The pillars must be protected at all costs! One pillar is lost...which means a Soul Reaper from the Soul Society has lost! The action is heavy, the book flows very quickly and is definitely a page turner. Tite Kubo drops such great successive volumes of great art and solid story. This battle is going to rage on for a couple of volumes (if the previous 37 volumes are any indication) but the way it is presented makes the pages fly by and before you know it...you're looking at the back cover. As of now Karakura Town appears to be safe, but Aizen has yet to send his full forces to accomplish his goals...and you can just feel when that happens, it's going to be EPIC!

Its an alright volume with different fights happening to protect the pillars like Kira vs Avirama, Hisagi vs Feendol and Madrame vs Poe. The first 2 are won easily but the 3rd due to Madrame not using his Bankai loses but then Komamura comes in to save him and its an epic fight! The Pillars have been defended so its time for captains to take on Espada! Hitsugaya vs Halibel, Rangiku vs 3 others and even Squad 2 cap Soi Fon has to take on some Ggiovega guy, its an all out battle with so much action and awesome moments for these characters, its an okay and quick read!

Kira and his little speech about fighting/battles and how he was infuriated by Gin's name. It certainly mustn't be easy for him emotionally when he was Gin's direct subordinate. I too, enjoyed the part where Iba lectured Ikkaku about losing his battle. While understandably they can't win every single fight, it only makes sense to give their very best for their duty which wasn't really seen here because Ikkaku has always been secretive about his bankai, and thus was seen as withholding back his strength.
