About the author

Lyn Andrews is one of the the UK's top one hundred paper-back bestsellers. Born and brought up in Liverpool, she is the daughter of a policeman who also married a policeman. After becoming the mother of triplets, she took some time off from her writing whilst she raised her children. Shortlisted for the romantic Novelists' Association Award in 1993, she has now written twenty-one hugely successful novels. Lyn Andrews divides her time between Merseyside and Ireland.

This book is about a young widow Sophie and her sister Maria who have to leave their home in Peel, Isle of Man post 1945 war. They have no choice other than to travel to Liverpool where their kind uncle and his family reside in order to sustain and build their lives up.

Since I personally prefer strong independent female protagonists, I love how Sophie, who lost her husband and father in the war, takes it upon herself to support and guide her daughter and her eighteen-year old sister who is to be separated from her lover in Peel.
Since the book already commences with an abysmal state of characters, I wouldn’t say it kept me guessing. I really thought once they reach a new city, things would work out for them almost immediately. But it was quite the opposite. Even though Liverpool offered exciting opportunities, there were challenges.Sophie is drawn to Frank whom she can’t have while Maria longs for a reunion.
With love and support of the extended family, the sisters thrive to better their financial state.
The story proceeds in a gradual manner and it keeps me turning pages to know what happens next.

I won’t give spoilers by revealing whether it has a happy ending or not since the whole book is about whether the sisters found happiness in the end but I would definitely say the book has quite a satisfactory ending.

I would highly recommend this book to romance lovers to read this saga of forbidden love and quest for happiness.

I enjoyed this book so much. Probably one of the best stories I’ve read. The author did a great job at creating a story I could invision so well and characters that were believable and very interesting. Was a great look into life after word war II and had a good mix of heartbreaking and very happy moments. I am excited to check out more books by this author.

I liked this book a lot. It made a nice light read after several others that I have been reading lately. I learned something about the Isle of Man and relived some of my life in the period just after WWII. The characters were very believable and I loved the descriptions of the clothing that Sophie was making for her new business. I am surprised that I am the first one to rate or review this book.

Tale of two sisters who have to contend with the difficulties of romance in difficult circumstances. Set both in Liverpool and the Ise of Man it flits from hope and despair and back again. My favourite character was Frank because he had to perservere with a bad marriage and working at sea and see things through until the end, to me he showed great strength and decency in order to win his true love.
