An Incredibly informative book that details the various events and transformations that took place in China, ultimately transitioning it from a socialist economy under Mao, to a market economy ‘with Chinese characteristics’. This book was written in 2012, at a time when China’s GDP per capita had risen from from $200USD to over $4000USD. Today (2025) the Chinese GDP per capita is over $13,000USD.
Towards the end of the book, the author discusses that China must adopt a free market for ideas in order to realize its full potential. Only then will China transform from simply being a "factory of products" for foreign brands, to an innovator and inventor of products, created by Chinese brands, with global appeal. I would argue that China has recently made breakthroughs that signal this shift. Brands like BYD, Xiaomi and CATL, are beginning to dominate global markets in Car EV and battery space.
