Ben Kenobi haunts Darth Vader’s dreams, even as the name Skywalker occupies his waking thoughts. Brian Wood's history of published work includes over fifty volumes of genre-spanning original material.
From the 1500-page future war epic DMZ, the ecological disaster series The Massive, the American crime drama Briggs Land, and the groundbreaking lo-fi dystopia Channel Zero he has a 20-year track record of marrying thoughtful world-building and political commentary with compelling and diverse characters.
His YA novels - Demo, Local, The New York Four, and Mara - have made YALSA and New York Public Library best-of lists. His historical fiction - the viking series Northlanders, the American Revolution-centered Rebels, and the norse-samurai mashup Sword Daughter - are benchmarks in the comic book industry.
He's written some of the biggest franchises in pop culture, including Star Wars, Terminator, RoboCop, Conan The Barbarian, Robotech, and Planet Of The Apes. He’s written number-one-selling series for Marvel Comics. And he’s created and written multiple canonical stories for the Aliens universe, including the Zula Hendricks character.
For a comic book, these 2013 Star Wars comics from Wood continue to be absolutely stellar. I am not joking when I say TV/film quality material.
So the original kick-off story could have ended on issue #13, but instead we've branched off now focusing entirely on Lord Vader and putting all the other mini-arcs on hold for the time being. I am tracking this will run on for a few issues, and then start roping back in the other story arcs that have been put the side for now.
I am 100% okay with this and still continuing to absolutely love these comics beyond belief. These are so good, I wouldn't mind having them in physical form on my bookshelf just to look at, admire, and reread again in hand.
Some damn good Lord Vader content right here. Absolutely top tier, best-in-class. Lord Vader fans, this issue (#14) starts a short mini-series dedicated to the Dark Lord of the Sith himself. Highly, highly recommend.
Can't wait to jump into #15 coming up next, which is going to loop back onto the main original story path(s) of this Brian Wood 2013 Star Wars comic master class series.
Okay, I think I must have forgotten just how terrifying Darth Vader was, how being in his very presence could unnerve you. Following Officer Nanda's five days with Vader made it so real, so tangent. At the end of the book I was on the floor with her creeped out. Even at this point in the story line I think the Emperor is wary of Vader's new found independence.
Part 2 of a 2 part series (within the larger 20 issue arc) that takes a new spin on things with first person narration of an ensign charged to Vader's command. The way Wood captured the tension and kept the story moving with the urgency I expected from Vader's wrath was very well done. Loved this mini series within the series!
