Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.

She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.

Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.

You can read all of my reviews at Alluring Reads

I hadn't realised that Horrid Henry books have been around for so long until I received Monster Movie and saw how many people reminisced about the beloved character. Upon finishing these 4 quick stories I can see why. Henry is a little devil and reading about the crooked situations he gets himself into was definitely interesting. I read this to my 5 year old daughter as well as my 3 year old son and I can't even count the number of times the two of them laughed out loud.

Coming from a mother's perspective I can say that I found myself looking for a moral in these stories and longed for Henry to learn a lesson in each one and was a bit disappointed when he didn't. But I can also say that it was refreshing to read tales that were just for fun! No deep thought went into absorbing these stories and they were strictly for fun which was, in it's own way, refreshing.

The favorite story in our household was Horrid Henry's Grump Card. In this story there wasn't necessarily a straight forward lesson that was learned but I found my daughter raising her hand a lot and pointing out the fault in Henry's actions. It was fun to see how she could identify right from wrong and she was shaking her finger at poor Henry.

I will be on the lookout for more of Henry's books and the kids have been asking for more as well. I definitely recommend these cute reads for anyone looking for light, fun reads that will have your kids (and you) laughing along the way.

Horrid Henry books are funny - we discovered Henry on a trip to England, so we love to read him with his English accent, which makes us laugh and makes him seen even more horrid.

Henry is always coming up with more horrible ideas to get his way. The book consists of four short stories and is easily read in an evening. The funny thing about Henry is that even when he's being horrid, you want him to win, so I especially enjoyed "Horrid Henry's Horrid Weekend."

I think HH books are best enjoyed together, so grab one and read it to your kids tonight.

I literally only read this because I've had it for over 7 years, and I was taking today to read short books I've had for a while that I wanted to get off my to-be-read pile. I don't really have an interest in young children's literature, and even if I did have an interest in a book aimed at 5-year-olds, I wouldn't be reading 'Horrid Henry'.

I don't think Henry's parents are that great. I don't think Henry as a character is that great either, nor a character you should want a child to read about or idolize. I mean maybe I'm not the person to criticize since I don't like real life children nor a parent, and I'm sure a child would find this funny but when part of the comedy of the book is the main character (and I'm not talking about this book, but the series as a whole) bullying his brother, sometimes with the intent to make him cry, makes me not like the character.
And his brother isn't that better, Peter is a whole other type of brat that I hate. And while Peter's character can be annoying, I don't like how he is portrayed as the sort of antagonist in some stories since he rats Henry out.
Like I said he is a whole other type of brat and will sometimes rat his brother out just to be annoying, but the fact that Peter at other times when he's telling on Henry for the right reasons is still portrayed as the sort of antagonist for spoiling Henry's fun. And I personally don't think that's the right message to aim towards children.

I have issues with other characters but I'm not gonna sit and list off everything I think is personally wrong with how certain characters are portrayed. This is just my one and only chance to actually voice my annoyances since I probably won't read another 'Horrid Henry' book, watch the show or watch the movie - not that any one actually care about my un-asked for opinion.

(Now I know there are other books like 'Don't be like Horrid Henry' etc, but kids are still very impressionable, and if they see a book/ tv character they like doing all this stuff, they gon' want to try it themselves.)

The Horrid Henry books often contain more than one story, which means children are motivated to read, as they are only short stories. Children love this stories as they contain amusing adventures and children are able to familiarise themselves with the repeated characters (who all have alliteration in their names).

A very funny book. All four of the stories were very good. My favourite story was the one where he had to sleep over at his arch nemesis. Love Henry because he is mean spirited but also like moody Magaret too.

Another 4 Horrid Henry stories.

Henry still isn't horrid. He just puts a lot of effort into things he shouldn't. He did get a win in one of these stories. Which was rare but he also needs a win now and again.

Three Stars: A book that features a misunderstood, mischievous boy and his misadventures.

Horrid Henry has all the bad luck! From not being allowed to see the most awesome scary movie that absolutely everyone has seen but him to having to play with Stuck up Steve and Bratty Bill who get him in trouble....Why can't he just get a grump card, his personal get out of trouble pass! His brother Perfect Peter has seven and he is so good he never uses them. Life is just so unfair for Horrid Henry!
What I Liked:
*Horrid Henry is certainly a character that will appeal to younger readers. It seems that he is always in trouble and life just isn't fair. What kid isn't going to root for Henry? If you have a younger reader this is a fun series to check out.
*I liked that this book was funny and that it follows Henry on his misadventures. He is someone that kids can identify with, since we all know that life is never fair when you are a kid. He will definitely make them laugh as he plots and schemes.
*I appreciated this book is split into four short stories, again making it a good pick for readers ages 7-11.
*I really enjoyed all the alliterative names such as Horrid Henry, Anxious Andrew, Moody Margaret, Perfect Peter, etc. I thought this made the read lots of fun.

And The Not So Much:
*Admittedly, Harry isn't exactly the best role model. He is always in trouble and picking on his brother Perfect Peter. If you are looking for a character who is good and has outstanding behavior, well Horrid Henry is not for you.
Horrid Henry is a fun book that introduces young readers to a rascal character. This book is divided into four short stories sure to entertain your child. Follow Henry as he gets into trouble. He will make you giggle.

Favorite Quotations:
"AAAARRRGGGGGHHHHH! He was a storm god hurling thunderbolts at a foolish mortal."
"Oh wow. Oh wow. It was risky. It was dangerous. But if it worked, he would have the best revenge ever in the history of the world. No, the history of the solar system. No the history of the universe."

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Horrid Henry strikes again! Once again, he's out to show the world what he's made of. After learning that the scary movie everyone was talking about is lame-o and far from scary, Horrid Henry decides that he can make something far more scary. Then he is forced into visiting his cousin Steve for the weekend and is terrorized by his older cousin. Horrid Henry isn't one for taking so much grief without retaliation and plots vengeance. The other two stories take place at his home and involve tricking his brother out of his Grump Cards, aka. "get away with terrorizing his family and getting away with it" cards, and plotting ways to take his classmates' money while hosting his own Olympics (or Holympics) with events that would never be endorsed by his school.

Four wonderful tales are compiled into this easy to read chapter book. Horrid Henry has a diabolical plan to scare everyone and when they see his monster movie, people will tremble in fear. Then Henry is off to visit his aunt and his cousin Steve who always gives Henry grief where Henry manages to break a bunk bed. When Henry becomes horridly grumpy, and needs a free pass, he conspires to get one with all of his might. Then at last, Henry decides that he can eat faster than anyone and tries to convince the school that eating should be an Olympic event. The events Henry supports are nothing that the school would ever endorse. The stories are full of humor and told with wit and charm, letting the kids who read about Henry feel a bit naughty themselves.

Just in time for Halloween, Horrid Henry gets into all sorts of trouble. Horrid Henry's Monster movie is a collection of four stories by Francesca Simon. The stories include: Horrid Henry's Monster Movie, Horrid Henry's Horrid Weekend, Horrid Henry's Grump Card, and Horrid Henry's Olympics. Each story follows the misadventures of Horrid Henry. It's fully of funny events that will leave kids giggling and probably new ideas of how to pull one over on their parents. The book contains illustrations by Tony Ross that fit the scenes perfectly. I think kids will get a kick out of Horrid Henry and his shenanigans.

Horrid Henry is at it again! There is nothing that can hold this little guy back from his misadventures.
It is so much fun to get to hang out with Horrid Henry for a little while - he is such a great ball of energy that never rests and always scheming to find a way to get the things he wants the most.
Not exactly the little boy that you would want your child to play with, but, he is the perfect example to learn how to have a little bit of patience and to think before you speak - not every plan is always the best plan.

Definitely a fun read for everyone!

A great novel about henry loving monster movies and wanted to see the scariest one in town because everyone saw and discovered everyone was lying and saw it was not scary at all and said he'd make one up of his own would he get a good movie? or will he not?

Another story of Henry needing grump card and gets them will he use them wisely?

I do not understand the appeal of this series. Horrid Henry really is horrid in an aggravating "I want to throttle this kid" kind of way. Other series have naughty kids which I find funny. For example, Greg in Diary of Wimpy can be mean but he's totally clueless that he's being mean. And that's what makes it funny. By comparison, Henry is just plain horrible.

Brilliant stories, very funny and told in a simple way that kids can relate too, great drawings by Tony Ross add humour to the stories. Not too long but not to short either to belittle children.
Great for bedtime reading.

Holy cow is Henry Horrid. I was going to give this book to my sister but I don't know if she'll want to read this to my niece. Ha! What a horribly horrid boy Henry is! :)
