Dominex Pharmaceuticals must get their new drug, Suprame, a generic for a popularly prescribed sedative on the market, or the company will go under. As time is of the essence, and the FDA will not be bought, the company is forced to conduct one last research study. They must prove through 500 study volunteers that the drug can be terminated at any time without severe side effects. But how will they achieve this when the volunteers all begin to drop like flies? And the volunteers are not the only obstacle, as Dominex finds it has some surprising adversaries.
Carol Freeman discovers her medication prison after innocently becoming part of the drug company’s deceptive plan. As she works through her devastating reality, she uncovers the horrible truth about sedatives and one pharmaceutical company that will stop at nothing to get their new drug on the market, Carol, along with 499 other volunteers, like it or not, are in for the most frightening ride of their lives.
Silent Epidemic, inspired by too many true stories, takes the reader on a wild journey. At the end of this adventure you will know the truth about the world’s best kept secret.
This is definitely a 5 star book for the simple reason that you can hardly put it down. It is mainly for the medical suspense lover mixed with corporate corruption. Nevertheless there is one point which doesn’t fit to the story. We have here a Pharmaceuticals company must get their new generic sedative drug out to the market. They must prove through 500 study volunteers that the drug can be terminated at any time without severe side effects. Yet many of the volunteers are taking the drugs for years under the original name from the Pharmaceuticals Company that discovered the drug years back. So how come that all the heat are against this one company that is just in the process of manufacturing the generic drug? Also didn’t like the ending of the story. Didn’t make much sense. But who cares, as long as you enjoy the book. It’s fiction is not? sane with a science fiction book. You enjoy it despite the fact that it doesn’t make much sense. And Most important it is FREE from Amazon for Kindle !!!
Overall a good story though odd parts became a bit unrealistic.
However the theme of addiction to tranquilisers is very much an issue for now and the bad practices of big pharma are very much alive and well as currently emerging with the overprescription of oxycodone and the like.
Jill Province's "Silent Epidemic" is a literary misstep, entangled in sensationalism and devoid of scholarly rigor. Promising a serious exploration of a critical subject, the book disappoints with a glaring absence of substantive research. Province's reliance on fear-driven narratives overshadows any potential insights, leaving readers with a sense of disillusionment. The lack of depth in analysis and the questionable validity of claims undermine the book's credibility. Rather than a well-researched exposé, it reads like a hasty compilation of alarming anecdotes. In the realm of investigative literature, "Silent Epidemic" falls short, failing to fulfill its promise of enlightening discourse.
this tale is fiction. it tells you that from the gitgo...but, does the nightmarish existence of greed corruption, duplicity, fraudulent documentation, and rampant victim negligence, not to.mention high dollar coercion and blatant disregard of all things ethical and honorable, live only in the realms of fantasy? do the unsuspecting have no champions? stick around the world of modern medicine even a little while and you will be tempted to.believe this story was made up. but, entirely?
This is a very unsettling story that shows how individuals can be manipulated by unscrupulous people and lawyers. Carol is persistent in trying to get evidence of a cover up by a large Company. The characters include people who are victims of ethically bankrupt drug companies. Other characters are ruthless and believable .
Starts out pretty good and holds your interest. Had a hard time putting it down. Later on it started getting a little slow. Was somewhat disappointed with Carol and hoped it would pickup. It is still a good read.
i never write reviews but this book has earned one...
...this is also not my normal choice of reading material...i usually steer clear of series as i feel that they tend to focus on the returning "hero" rather than on a good story...the subject matter of "silent epidemic" : prescription drug addiction, the FDA, & a "big-money" pharmaceutical company caught my attention....with a background in healthcare, i can quickly become very critical &/or bored with a novel like this one....amazon prime offered it free so i decided to try it & if it became boring i would just delete it - no money lost..."silent epidemic" turned out to be a real page-turner, very realistic, intriguing & hard to put down....carol freeman, the novel's "hero" wasn't the main focus - other characters received the attention they deserved to make the story believable....i enjoyed this book so much that i look forward to reading more in the series...
This was a very long book, but well worth the effort to read it. Because of the nature of the material covered, and the fact that there is much more than a grain of truth in this so-called 'novel,' this becomes more of a horror story than thriller or mystery. I would highly recommend it, especially for anyone who deals with depression, panic disorder or any of the other "invisible" diseases that plague so many of us these days. I would rate this as a MUST read.
This story kept me involved and wanting to know what happens next. It makes you wonder how many ways we are manipulated by businesses. I think we would all be shocked to know the truth.
