3.5 stars. Nice mix of political finangling, new tech, combustable chemistry and impactful side characters.

Be aware this is a JAX not a J Frank book. So a lot of time is spent on sex scenes that can get repetitive or go on way too long. Especially in the particular set up of this book where you really wish the bodyguard would pay a bit more attention to his actual job and be responsible.

We get it, she’s hot but could you maybe keep your gun nearby instead of flung across the room or at least call in a replacement with his head in the game.

The world building was fantastic as usual at any rate. I had so many questions about details, none of which were answered. But just me giving a crap means it felt real so I suppose that lack gets a pass.

Ever the professional, security specialist and co-owner of NHK, Liam Nash is the consummate soldier: Considered a deadly weapon even if he were stripped naked, Liam had always taken his responsibility to exercise caution and discrimination very seriously. Yup, straight arrow doesn't begin to describe our man, Liam, until this new assignment totally takes him off his game. Devon, is a scientist,an inventor, an enigma, and a total temptation. She also holds the key to equalizing the great threat to human kind, the Morphate.

This story is intense as much from the suspense of the narrative as from the tight sexual tension. From the beginning, we are alerted that human hubris has again developed a tool for its own destruction. Luckily, Devon Candler, the recluse millionaire has a weapon that can balance the odds. The backstory about why Dr. Candler gets involved adds an interesting layer. There is a comment here about using weapons of destruction as a deterrent to war.

It's been awhile since I have read a Jacquelyn Frank book. I forgot how completely and keenly the hero gets involved with the heroine, and this story is no different. There is plenty of sizzling chemistry between Liam and Devon and it gets stronger and stronger as the story develops. As he states:

the way I react to you...it feels like the first time. That keen, beautiful feeling of first getting to be with a lover. There's nothing about you that doesn't fascinate me. Thrill me.

Their mutual obsession leads them to some minor "stupid" moments, but in the light of the darkness and stress around them, I give them a pass.

Although, it is currently a standalone, this book reads like it could be the beginning of a series and I sincerely hope it is. There are interesting characters and lots of potential storylines. I'm invested! More, please!

IN A NUTSHELL:

An intense and involving book, I recommend it for the interesting premise and it's all consuming love story.

Thank you to the author, Kensington Books, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book has me a bit at a cross roads.

Dangerous is a futuristic paranormal romance, all the kind of things i like. I did have a difficult time getting into this book, i would read for a couple of hours then put it down only to pick it back up again ten minutes later to start reading again.
It just seemed like a hard slog to get into the story, the plot was a good one, although very technical in detail which makes it had to digest at times.

Testing on humans creates a new race of Morphates, humanity fighting to survive and keep a balance as the weaker race. Enter Devon a doctor who was a human test subject, now a Morphate who is now developing weapons to help kill the Morphates trying to rule over all the humans and the Morphates alike, still following? try and keep up.
Liam a special forces solder who runs a protection company, who found a way to kill morphates during a attack, is hired to protect Devon, that’s when the sparks start to fly.
Liam knows he shouldnt be feeling the great sexual pull towards his primary, the woman he is to protect but that doesnt stop either Liam or Devon from getting together. The sexual tension between these two characters in the first half of the book was immense, and then when they do finally get it on the sex scenes are explosive, sexy and totally hot.
What this book seemed to be lacking slightly was the danger!?! it was in the back ground that it was Liam along with the team that work for him, that it was there job to protect Devon, but mostly it was about the relationship between Liam and Devon that was at the for front of the story.

The end seemed all a bit rushed to me I got to 98% in the book the story was still flowing with no conclusion in sight, then you turn the page all is resolved!. Then comes the epilogue where Liam confesses his undying love to a woman that will never age and will never die, unlike himself, they chat about having children, the end all in the last 2% of the book.

I expected so much more from this book, it seemed to brush over some of the details, then go into to much detail at times that i found confusing . The main bones of the book were good, i just wish it was better.

Liam Nash is a trained special security operative. He is hired to protect Devon Candler, but she is nothing like his other assignments. Monsters are literally trying to kill her and although she is fierce in her own right a little extra sexy alpha male back up always helps.

Devon needs protection because she has found a way to kill the superior strength creatures called Morphates. Devon believe if Morphates take over the world they will destroy human life. Making her enemy #1 to the Morphate second gen. population.

The attraction grows between Liam and Devon even though Liam realizes Devon is keeping her secrets close. The sexual tension could be cut by a knife and when they get together the scenes are explosive.

I really love the premise of this book. I would of liked more world building and a bit more back ground information. What is given is completely fascinating and makes me want to know more...but I was disappointed that many things are left unexplained.

The story was interesting and quite enjoyable. Some of the story is completely thrilling but then there were times that the story slowed and was eaten up by sexual excursions (yes, they were delectable excursions). In the end, I found this to be a really good read with strong expectations for the series to come.

I received this ARC copy of Dangerous from Kensington Books - eKensington in exchange for an honest review. This book is set for publication September 5, 2013.

Cover & Title - 4 of of 5
Favorite Character - Devon

The last book i read by this author I really struggled to get into and in general i did not enjoy it. The blurb for this book got my attention, it sounded like just the type of book I enjoy. So I put my reservations aside and picked it up, I am glad i did.

There were a few negatives but they were very minor. I want to know more about the world and the morphate’s - I guess they will be mentioned more in books to come. This book was a beginning, a tease almost. I am looking forward to reading more in the series that is for sure.

The characters, chemistry and story all worked for me. I thought the sex scenes and passion between them was hot, it seemed real and it fitted how their characters had been portrayed during the story.

The ending was good but the epilogue, i did a little girly squeal when i read it!

I would recommend this book and read more in the series.

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Well JAX (AKA Jacquelyn Frank) did it again. She created another world for me to fall in love with! I have to give you a brief over view of this book before I touch on the characters/story line, so you can understand what is what and who is who!

A slightly futuristic/paranormal setting in the common world. A long while ago, a devious Dr wanted to create an anti-aging remedy for the human population. In the process, he ended up creating an entirely new species from the humans he used as his test subjects. They are referred to as Morphates who believe themselves to be superior to the human race, are faster, are strong, who develop fangs and claws and have the urge to drink blood. They are aggressive, immortal, sexual creatures who have been accepted for the most part by the human society as long as they remain in the "Dark Cities" that house common human criminals. In other words, they are to keep company with the "human scum"

Of course, there is always a few that want world domination ... lol ;)

Liam Nash is our hero and he is the head of a top notch security team that has been hired to protect our heroine Devon Candler. Not knowing she was a woman, let alone the most incredibly sexy, beautiful woman he has ever seen, throws Liam back a bit. The force of attraction these two have for one another is nothing short of animalistic ... which is appropriate ... read the book and you'll understand why! LOL

Devon Candler, smart as she is sexy has developed a weapon that can destroy the Morphates. The Morphates know it too and need to destroy Devon first to ensure that her weapon and secrets do not get out. Assassin after assassin has been sent to kill Devon, but she always seems to get by and survive. She researches Liam and discovers he has successfully killed a Morphate before and hires him immediately to provide her with the additional security.

Liam has never mixed pleasure and business .. until now. He just can't seem to help himself with Devon as she drives him to levels he never knew existed. He is fiercely protective of her and as the story unravels he begins to discover so many secrets and what drives Devon to do what she does. He is nothing short of amazed by her ... he soon realizes and is confronted by his team that the very desire that drives him to protect her is the same desire that can get her killed.

This is a sexy read that is filled with passion, action, and secondary characters that I cannot wait to read more about. I really enjoyed the world Jax has created here and how it came to be. I loved the science that she explains and the medical interventions that are used. Actually I loved it so much that I wanted MORE. There wasn't enough diving into the Morphate world and I craved that. I had questions that I wanted answered and this is where this book lost a point for me. Maybe we'll be lucky and have JAX deliver another book and turn this into a series.

Here is a snippet from the book that gave me a good chuckle and goes to show how the sexual tension goes on between Liam and Devlon.

"Is it better for you from the front or the back?"

He'd ask the question with just enough innuendo to get himself slapped. But this was Devon, and she wasn't exactly the shy and retiring type who got easily affronted. Her eyes widened as she absorbed the intent of the remark, and he could swear he saw her mouth twitch at the corners.

"I think both," she said softly, a tilt to her head adding speculation to the answer. "We can start from the front, and .... assuming you don't get too worn out, we'll finish from behind."

"And if I do get worn out?" he asked with a chuckle.

"Then I'll just have to lay you out flat on the bed and do you like that."

Can you believe this is conversation about stitching up his shoulder?? BAHAHAHAH! WINK!

HAPPY READING! :)

I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am a part of a paranormal romance book club and in that aspect I have heard A LOT about Jacquelyn Frank and her amazing writing. When I saw this optioned on NetGalley and read it was a new project of Jacquelyn Frank's I had to see what all the hype was about with her writing. I was afraid I was going to be disappointed and have to wage war against my fellow paranormal romance lovers if I didn't like her book. Fortunately, that was a non-issue.

Dangerous opens on a military-esk training exercise with Liam Nash as the commander. Displaying his troops' expertise to a perspective client and disliking that fact in ever way. Liam is a tough-as-nails man who was groomed to be not just the best bodyguard in the business, but also a man with no squeamishness when it came to a little blood and a little death. He never knew a woman who could keep his interest or a job that was anything but business as usual.

Then he meets Devon.

Devon is a pristine and beautiful specimen of a woman who is blunt, ferocious, and irresistible to the stoic Liam. She enlists his help in protecting herself and the prototypes she has developed that could even the odds between the human race and a race of immortals with little to no regard for humans as more than vermin to be put down. Liam is the only human to ever figure out a way to kill this new lab-created race of humanoid monsters.

Between the steamy, hot romance between Devon and Liam and the new race of vampire-esk creatures in this book, it was no small stretch to look up on the last page of the book and realize I had read the entire 320 pages in one sitting. This book binge was well worth the lack of sleep it caused. I found that Jacquelyn Frank's writing was some of the hottest sex scenes, most thought out plot, and original concept of antagonists I have seen in a long time. There were no shortcomings that I could find in this book, and I usually can ALWAYS find SOMETHING I didn't like about the story, characters, or sequence of events. I loved it all. I want more. There is no mention as to whether this is going to be a series or not, but I would love if it were. I would love it even more if it was a continuation of Devon and Liam's story.

Dangerous is the type of paranormal romance that walks the fine line of erotica. The sex scenes are all consuming, the romance is heart felt, and the danger is almost tangible. My heart raced so much during the reading of this story, I was sure it was going to burst out of my chest at any moment. Jacquelyn Frank, or JAX if you rather, has found her way onto my list of favorite paranormal romance writers. Congratulation's Jacquelyn, and well done!

Well this being the second Morphate book I have read. I must admit I am so hooked!!

How do you control the uncontrollable? Kill the unkillable?
Now imagine a genetically modified immortal being made out of "the run of the mill" psychopath. That is where the whole Morphate series stems from...

Devon Chandler a Morphate in disguise as a human. I would say an average woman, but nothing about Devon is remotely close to that. Sole handedly responsible for leveling the playing field when it comes to humans and Morphates. Devon harnessed the only way known to kill her kind, making it possible to help put down any forces trying to take over and enslaving mankind. This does lead to a small hiccup in her happily ever after, since some of the clans would rather put her down before she can unleash her technology.

In comes Liam Nash, all American bad ass/ bodyguard. Liam is just trying to button up his next assignment when he is physically assaulted/titillated by Devon's existence. Just his name on her lips sets off his hanky panky mode. Which is so startling out of character, he comes to doubt his role in keeping her safe.

This story is a work of art...lol So much depth and flirtatious fun melded with searing passion. The balance held throughout the story is just awe inspiring. The playful banter between these two skilled killers was fun to read about. Watching them each unfurl from what they once were, clearly accepting who each of them are to each other. Love at its finest!!

*Book source ~ Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Devon Candler is a rich recluse whose life is being threatened and she needs the best security available. That would be the company NHK, highly trained, highly skilled and very deadly. As a co-owner of NHK, Liam Nash is a Team Leader and the only one available to head up the team to provide her security. Liam, used to being the consummate level-headed professional at all times, is thrown for a loop when he reacts to his charge with enough sexual heat to melt the polar ice caps. Somehow, they need to deal with their attraction before it gets Devon killed.

I’m happy to see another Morphate story. The first, a short, was in The Pleasure Project and I was really hoping the Morphates would get their own series. Whether that’s the case or not is not known, but this second story makes me hopeful I’ll get my wish.

I like Devon, her dedication, intelligence and take no shit kickass attitude. Liam is one hot yummilicious hunk of dangerous beefcake. The two are nuclear together. I’ve always loved stories involving highly trained dangerous professionals, so NHK is a wet dream for me. The secondary characters are a wonderful counterpoint to the main characters and the enemy, while being too arrogant for his own good, is deliciously evil. The story did drag out a bit too long for my liking, but all-in-all a very hot suspenseful read.

I enjoyed this. I think I read the first one in the series.
I was able to figure out what was going on in this world. There were some draggy areas, particularly when people were thinking with the wrong head, so to speak. A little too much time spent on Devon's fashion choices, and really, at times it was like she just wanted a reaction (see, wrong head thinking). When you are dealing with beings that can only be killed one way, at least so far, they made some fairly strange choices.
I am unsure if I will pursue further stories in this world.

Devona Chandler hires Liam Nash & his company to provide bodyguard protection for her. She tells him she needs protecting from the Morphates who want to kill her because she has developed a method of killing them despite their near immortality.

The story follows Devona & Liam as they fall for each other and deal with the Morphates. It is a very sex heavy story, but it's got a good plot, & great characters.

I loved the concept and the characters in this book, and some of the love scenes were super hot. Unfortunately, I felt like the book dragged in spots and could have been paced better. The dialogue tags also needed editing (e.g. the hero "chuckled" out some sentences instead of saying them with a chuckle).

I got halfway through before. I just couldn’t take it anymore and dumped it back to the library. I could get into the story, but as soon as I realized the main two characters status, one is mortal, the other will live forever, I just couldn’t take it anymore. There is no good outcome for this. She won’t age and he will. No, just hard no.

Quick & Dirty: In a world where it’s humans versus Morphates, a Morphate loner must trust a squad of humans to protect her life. Let’s hope her trust is not misplaced…

Opening Sentence: “Why do I get the feeling I’m about to have a really bad day?”

The Review:

I was a little unsure what I would think of this book when I read on Jacquelyn Frank’s website that she was using the Jax pseudonym to write books featuring “unconventional” romances. Luckily, my nerves were unwarranted, and I enjoyed the story, although there were also issues that kept it from being a 4-star read for me.

Fifty years ago, a doctor began running experiments on people. While a large portion of his subjects were homeless or criminals, those who discovered what he was doing also became test subjects. As a result of his work, a new species is born: the Morphates, who have super human strength and speed and are also immortal.

In the present time, Devon Candler has figured out a way to kill Morphates. A Morphate herself, she wants to create an even playing field between humans and Morphates, so Morphates don’t become out of control. Unfortunately, Morphates who don’t agree with her plan have put a price on her head. To protect herself, she hires NHK, a security firm headed by Liam Nash, the one man who has killed a Morphate himself. From the moment they meet, there’s a palpable connection between Liam and Devon; however, neither one of them believe in mixing business with pleasure. Will they be able to resist each other? Will Devon be able to survive the assassins coming after her?

Devon is a great heroine. She is incredibly strong and self-confident, and yet there is also a vulnerability to her that I felt made her very realistic. She managed to survive the experiments done to her and came out of them a strong, independent woman who’s not afraid to go against her species in order to do what she thinks is right. She’s definitely a heroine a reader can feel connected to and cheer for.

The best partner for a strong woman is a strong man, and Liam definitely fits that mold. What I liked best about Liam is that he doesn’t treat Devon as if she is helpless. He knows she can take care of herself and treats her accordingly. They make a great pair.

Now for the negatives. The world building was sometimes confusing. I would have liked to have more information on how the world operated, with the Federated States and the Dark Cities. I knew enough to follow what was going on most of the time, but a little extra explanation would have been helpful. Also, after the halfway point, it seemed like most of the book was sex. I don’t necessarily have a problem with that, but it felt like the plot suffered because of it. At the 95 percent mark, nothing had been resolved, and then it all wrapped up very quickly. I would have preferred a longer book, so that the end didn’t feel quite so rushed.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, but did have some issues with it. While it’s currently a stand alone book, if Jacquelyn Frank decides to make it a series, I would be interested in reading more set in this world. It feels like there is much more that could be said!

Notable Scene:

The doors opened with a burst of energy, a no-nonsense movement and confidence, and in walked Devon Candler.

Time suddenly ground to a halt for Liam. Every single muscle in his heavily powered body contracted abruptly with shock.

Devon Candler was a woman.

She entered the room with a display of powerful presence, blatant femininity, and the most mouth-watering curves Liam had ever laid eyes on. And just like that, in the breadth of a nanosecond, Devon Candler robbed Liam Nash of his peace of mind.

This review is posted on Way Too Hot Books.

Please welcome the newest members of the paranormal world- Morphates.

What is a Morphate? Well, they are fast, strong, sensual, immortal vampire-alike creatures who have fangs and claws and they drink blood. I must admit that I love the paranormal genre and I've read a lot of paranormal books, but this was the first time I came across this type of paranormal species what immediately got me interested.

The main characters of this story are Liam NashM, the head of s security team which gets hired to protect Devon Chandler, the gorgeous, sensual, & provocative femme-fatale and one of the oldest and most powerful Morphates. I liked both of the characters of this book, because they had a strong personality. I was especially glad because the female character wasn't portrayed as some whiny drama queen as usual which most of the time ruins the reading experience for me. Since the moment Devon & Liam meet there's an undeniable, explosive chemistry between them to which they succumb soon enough and many, many times ;). Even though I liked them two as a couple, after the first half of the book I got more interested in two secondary characters who were part of the security team and I hope they'll get their own book.

The book was interesting, action-packed & way-too-hot with a lot of sex scenes, maybe even too much for my taste. I liked the first half of the book better, because in the second half the story got a bit repetitive and that's never a good thing. I had also difficulties with the writing style. It was good, but from time to time it became a bit over-descriptive and detailed for my taste that I found myself rereading some parts a couple of times to get the point and I don't like when authors use too many strong adjectives and adverbs in the same sentence like f.e. deliciously, exquisitely etc. What the story lacked was the building of the paranormal world. I wanted to find out more about Morphates and their society, but the focus was more on the romance what I hope will change with future books.

The book didn't end up with a cliffhanger which was also a good thing. I hope the next book will focus on my favorite characters in this one. All in all, solid 3 stars for the story!

DANGEROUS was one of those books that I was certain I would like. I was looking forward to reading it, and I went in with a super positive mindset and the willingness to give it more than a fair shot. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into DANGEROUS. I do so love a good paranormal romance, but Devon and Liam’s relationship got so physical so fast that I felt it lacked the emotional connection I really like reading about. While DANGEROUS did have a few redeeming qualities, at the end of the day, it wasn’t a super enjoyable read for me.

My biggest issue was the relationship between Devon and Liam. Individually, I liked them both. Together, they were just meh. In romance, I like to see the slow build up in a relationship, and Liam and Devon don’t have that. Once they give in to their attraction (after a few pages of both of them trying to avoid the other because of this or that reason), the relationship is pretty full throttle, so we don’t get an in between part. Basically, the thing that really stuck out at me- the thing I am still thinking about a few days after finishing the book- is that DANGEROUS had a lot of sex. Lots of Liam thinking about how sexual Devon was, how she didn’t realize it, how to her he was, lots of Devon going on about how nobody had ever kept her attention this way, how it was the best sex she’d had ever, lots of kissing, lots of nudity and lots of sex. Near the end, I started skimming. I was nearly 90% done with the book, and it felt to me that all Liam and Devon were doing was having sex. The climax (pun not intended- okay maybe a little intended) of the action happened at the very very end of the book, and as a result felt rushed. I could have done with less sex, and more plot.

But, aside from the sex, there were a few things I liked about DANGEROUS. Two great characters were Inez and Kellen, employees of the security company run by Liam. They are partners who clearly care about each other, and even though they didn’t appear frequently, I felt a lot of depth to them and I would love to read more about them. Also, the mythology behind the vampires (morphates) is very interesting- they’re caused by genetic experimentation- and the history of their development and how they took over large cities is something that could have definitely touched on more without me being bored. Unfortunately, the things I liked came up infrequently, too infrequently for me to really get involved in the book.

I really wanted to like DANGEROUS more than I did. It has all the trademarks of a perfect Kate read- the alpha male, the woman with brains who is capable of taking care of herself, an interesting, original setting, and some fun side characters to break up the action- yet I didn’t find myself getting into it. And while I can see DANGEROUS working for other people, it just wasn’t for me.

Sexual content: Multiple graphic sex scenes

Oddly enough the “love story” was what I disliked about this book. This is the second Morphate book, although for some reason it is not listed as such. The first book is a anthology called The Pleasure Project. I didn’t read the first book so I can’t compare the two. I loved the world that was built. The book takes place roughly 50 years in the future. There are people who were experimented on and they have been altered into immortal, super strong beings with reptilian eyes and a thirst for blood when sexually aroused. In this future all of the major US cities have fallen to ruin and are now ruled my Morphate Alphas who are whipping them into shape.

I loved the NHK team. They are smart, well equipped, resourceful, and capable soldiers. They also have a intense camaraderie and crack jokes on each other. I found myself looking forward to the interaction between team members. Liam is the typical Alpha male hero. He is a bit brooding, and why to easily distracted by a pretty face. Devon is a Morphate, Doctor, Scientist, genius, liar. Since she is a Morphate she doesn’t really need a body guard, she is stronger and more well trained in self defense than any of the people she has hired. So at first Liam has no idea that he is not technically needed for this job. I also found it annoying that Liam was under Devon’s spell as if it was some mystery. Really? She is gorgeous, with a sick body. She walks around in see through clothes, and most importantly as a Morphate she sends of intense sexual pheromones. There was no seduction here. A damn near naked woman is sashaying around smelling like sex, of course Liam had a hard on for her. The sex scenes were hot, but unlike Liam I never forgot that if she did truly get caught up in the moment she could either drain him of all his blood or rip him to shreds with her claws. Aside from great sex there was nothing between the two leads that occurred to make them fall in love. And Devon’s constant lying by omission didn’t help. This isn’t a love story. This is the story of a bodyguard breaking rule number one and screwing his client. The villain Ambrose wasn’t very developed and he came across as a psycho who was simply power hungry. Which is a shame, because the story of how the first generation of Morphates came to be is an interesting one and could have lead to deep and complex character motivations.

I won’t be waiting for the next Morphate book, if there is one. However, I did like Inez and Kellen. So if there is another book, and its about them I will most likely read it.

It is not going to be possible to go into much detail on this story without getting spoilery but I’ve tried to get across what I thought without giving too much away.

I’m not sure if this book is supposed to be set in the future or present day in an alternate time-line of our world.

The basic premise of the story is that there are two races on our planet. Humans and Morphates. You find out what Morphates are about three chapters into the book but basically they were created by a mad scientist experimenting on people in an attempt to develop a cure to aging. The two races do not get along (bit of an understatement).

The book begins with a security firm (part owned by Liam Nash) being hired to protect the reclusive Devon Candler.

First impressions of Liam are that he is no-nonsense, straight talking, highly skilled, has a strong code of ethics and is a consummate professional… However, the minute this consummate professional meets Devon Candler he is consumed by lust and his unshakable code of ethics seems to slowly burn up in the heat between the two characters until it is no longer in existence.

Sounds like it would be enjoyable watching the burn, yes? Well it wasn’t. I just didn’t feel anything between these characters beyond lust, truly I was sick of reading how sexy and alluring Devon/Liam was by a third of the way through. How dangerous.

The book was well written (in terms of the language used by the writer – the turn of phrase) but, in my opinion, the pacing was off. The premise of the story was good and I know that the first book in any series has to set the scene and build a world but I felt the story was too bogged down in some areas and too stingy with the info in others. I just didn’t really care about the characters, I could not have cared less whether Devon Candler lived or died…

I really struggled to finish this book, I couldn’t get lost in it and I felt like I’d been reading it forever therefore I’d need a lot of persuasion to read any more books in this series… Although second (and subsequent) books tend to be less bogged down in details, so I’ll never say never.

I’d say if you like futuristic/Sci-Fi with romantic elements or paranormal romance then give it a go, it wasn’t awful, I just didn’t feel this one.

2 out of 5 stars.

As the leader of a special op team, the hero is celebrated for the fact that he was able to kill a vampire-something no one had ever done before. He's gotten the job of protecting a reclusive but extremely rich businessman only to discover that it's an extremely rich businesswoman.

From the jump the hero is thrown off by the heroine. She's incredibly sexy and alluring yet she has no idea just how attractive she is. She's strong and independent yet she's a rare female character in that she actually allows the bodyguard to do his job. She doesn't impede his plans by seeking out of insisting on attending risky parties but instead calmly allows the hero to lead.

That doesn't take away from the fact that she's very able to protect herself when it comes down to it, or to put her foot down on certain matters. All in all she was a great female lead and I wish more author penned characters like hers.

The hero is just plain sexy, with his muscular build, gorgeous eyes and tats. He was lost to the heroine from the second he meets her. He will do anything and everything to make sure this woman is safe yet she can't stop himself from crossing the line of professionalism. They had mad chemistry but despite the fact the you think they're going to freak within the first 2 chapters they actually hold off until much later in the book. It allowed for a constant and heavy build up of tension between them and made for a hell of a ride as a leader.

The major flaw of this book is a complete opposite of Jax's previous book Hunter in that this book had way too many loose ends. The 'vampires' are never really explained. Just suddenly they're a part of the story but there's no back story about how they came to be or how the humans found out about them. Apparently they were kidnapped humans turned into these things via experiments. In fact, you don't even truly find out that they're vampires until well half way through the book when suddenly the heroine drinks the hero's blood. Up until that point they were just immortal beings. I did like that the author made their weakness mercury instead of the predicable silver but I felt like I was thrown head first into a brand new world that was never fully explained to me. That being said, the romance between the two characters was enough to save the book a little for me but it's nowhere near my favorite book.

"Dangerous" by Jacquelyn Frank (writing as JAX). A sci-fi romance novel.

I really liked this book! Some might say this was more a paranormal romance, but I thought of it more as a science fiction type storyline. Paranormal because there are "vampires" who are not really vampires because they don't have to drink blood to live, they eat normal food like every human does. Sci-fi because these "vampires" were actually created by humans accidentally, trying to search for a scientific way for humans to become immortal.

Earth, the future, where a race of vampires (called Morphates) exist because of one human doctor looking for the key to living forever. Morphates are now segregated from humans in their own cities. They are stronger and faster than humans and their sexual appetites border on violence along with drinking their partner's blood. They are also immortal. But not all Morphates follow the rules and humans are looking for a way to kill them in order to be able to keep them under some semblance of control.

Enter Devon Candler, a scientist and inventor who has discovered how to kill a Morphate. Devon's life is now in danger and she needs protection. Enter Liam Nash, head of the security company Devon hires. There's an instant attraction between Devon and Liam, but Liam's number one rule...don't get involved with the person you're guarding. If only that were so easy... But Devon has a secret and if she doesn't tell Liam everything, he won't be able to do his job properly.

This book was so full of tense sexual frustration! Very sensual and steamy. It has one of the longest (no pun intended...) sex scenes I've ever read! Other than the romance between Liam and Devon, the storyline was really interesting with the underlining theme of how society treats people/things they don't understand. The pacing of the book was really well done. All the characters are so likeable. Very well written. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As a fan of Jacquelyn Frank's other books, it was easy for me to pick this book up and dive right in. The writing style is rich and easy to fall in love with. I didn't have any idea what the book was about, but trusted that it would involve some sort of paranormal and some romance.

The story takes place in a world where a typical evil scientist created a breed of Morphates while trying to play god. These Morphates are nearly indestructible, don't age, drink blood, and are super sexy (hey, I'm not complaining). They were separated from society and placed in their own cities, ruled by Alphas in a wolf-esque government structure. The main characters, Devon and Liam, are thrown together when Liam's group of protection detail is hired by Devon to protect her from increasingly violent Morphate attacks.

I'm usually adhere to a strict "no futuristic books" rule, but this book convinced me that I might need to have an open mind about the genre. I read the book almost in one sitting, drawn into the romantic (and super steamy) story that develops between Liam and Devon. The sizzle level was off the charts for the last half of the book! I'm also not your typical military/navy/etc storyline reader, but this author now completely has my trust in all things paranormal. The world that was created in this book has me hoping for more installments!

Dangerous is another great offering from Jacquelyn Frank writing as JAX. Considered as a paranormal romance, Dangerous, starts off with Devon Candler needing the help of security forces handled by Liam Nash. And as expected, the chemistry between these two is explosive. But Devon hides a secret that she has difficulty concealing from LIam. Liam has trouble keeping his interest professional when it comes to Devon, a fact that doesn't seem to escape his team. But he knows Devon is something more than she appears to be and he doesn't seem to care. As expected, the author has crafted a tale with great world building, intricate plot twists, memorable characters and hot and heavy scenes between our leads. What always strikes me when it comes to Ms. Frank is that her female leads are always something different. There is the constant traits of straightforward honesty and inner sensuality but there will be always something that will make them unique. Devon is such a character. The plot is a mixture of the paranormal and science fiction, meeting in a dystopian world. There is action, mystery and great secondary characters in this book. The pacing is excellent, with a gradual lead up to revelations of secrets and the pasts. An excellent and engaging read not to be missed and will leave you asking for more.

Something caught me early on with this. It was probably Liam’s “I-know-I’m-good-and-don’t-need-to-prove-it” mentality. The way nothing phased him until he met Devon Candler and everything went right out the window.

Devon could literally be the definition of sex and though she wants Liam she tries to resist him. You cant help but like her, really, with her tough chick attitude. She could certainly look after herself and designed some bad-ass weapons.

That being said, I have to admit I got a little bored in places. It might have been all the description, which I’m not that big a fan of, or the really long paragraphs (also not a fan of) and kept putting it down the more we got into the story, just wanting the plot to hurry up and play out. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a good book and I’m glad I read it but there wasn’t any introduction to the new world we were in, that’s my only problem with it apart from the above-mentioned things but they relate to me personally.

It was certainly something a little different to what I normally read and I honestly did enjoy it.

If you like something futuristic with paranormal vibes then this is probably right up your street. Add a splash of romance and you’re all set for an intense journey.

Ms. Frank has a wonderful talent but her books have a hit or miss quality. While I completely loved her first book writing as JAX, I had a really hard time getting into Dangerous. The author went for dark and dangerous but instead landed on conniving and conceited.

It wasn't that Dangerous was a bad book, I just kept waiting for something. I just didn't connect with the characters. I wanted to. It was there just out of reach. That all important something.

In a world where humanity is fighting to survive, the weaker race, mankind needs all the help it can get. This story had so very much potential but I found the characters too caught up in their "need" and not enough in the danger that surrounded them. In other circumstances these two strong characters might make a spectacular impact.

I look forward to reading more from Ms. Frank and know she will continue to write more fascinating books with exceptional characters and wonderful storylines. Not every book an author writes is her best. And not every reader has the same opinion so if you are a Jacquelyn Frank fan make sure you read this book and judge for yourself.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a tendency to see the name of a favorite author and just grab the book, not really bothering to read the jacket cover. I’ve been burned a few times (that, of course, is another story) but for the most part, it turns out pretty good. I was a bit surprised with this one, in the sense I was expecting a straight military story…not my usual genre. But I got a bit of a surprise!

Liam Nash is one of three partners of NHK, a security team that was just a step above the rest. Like a private army they were often hired to protect high profile subjects. Liam was hired by a very wealthy woman named Devon Candler who wanted NHK to protect her from an unknown person who had already attempted to kill her multiple times. Liam took the job, then regretted it almost immediately. His number one rule was “don’t get personally involved with your principal.” One look at Devon Candler and he was a bundle of raging testosterone, resembling some randy teenager ready to jump her bones! Rather than do the smart thing and call in a different supervisor to lead, he followed the wrong part of his anatomy and stayed.
