Did I read the right book? A few years ago when I was attending the University of Colorado, Denver's Urban Community Teacher Education program this work was referenced and it was something I had made a note to read the full text. Well, three years later I'm a teacher at a Title 1 school and I got a copy of this book, and three months after starting it, I've finished it.

There are so many gems in this book, and unfortunately not much has changed in how disadvantaged students feel about reading and writing. I was hoping for more of the structure for how to implement this in my classroom and can't tell if the version I got (the cover says Program and Proof and lists Elton B. McNeil as one of the authors) is different then the one I needed.

Still, the parts of the book I've got underlined are some powerful truths even if I still don't know how to connect what we know with how to make it happen in the classroom.

A truly inspiring read tainted only by some of its racist language. If only we could invest more labour and funds into programs like these.
