Destiel Fanfic Stay away from the light-beds. Stay in the deep.
It is the first thing hatchlings are taught the moment their fans unfurl and they can swim without their parents to buoy them along. It is the first rule, the first law. It is the beginning of every boogey-monster bedtime story told when they settle against the cliffs to sleep.
Castiel should have listened better.

3.5 stars. Just finished this extremely long fanfic, should really be divided into two or three separate books. Skimmed quite a bit towards the end. Ex-con Dean falls for fin-kin Castiel onboard a ship owned by the evil Lilith. There is a big wodge of fan-speak at the beginning of each chapter which spoils the flow, plus many typos but I was still drawn to finish this, all 1467 pages of it! Art by agentmapal 'Castiel turns to look at him again and Dean is staring down at the notebook in his hands, his shoulders hunched. He looks small again. Dean looks like he's fragile, as if one word could break him.'
I hardly ever (ie NEVER) add fanfictions to my Goodreads account, but for this one, I can make an acceptation.
NOW. IF YOU KNOW ME, YOU KNOW MY OTP IS DESTIEL. THIS IS A DESTIEL FIC REVIEW. IF YOU DISLIKE DESTIEL TO ANY DEGREE, TURN BACK NOW, WHILE IT’S STILL SAFE FOR YOU TO DO SO.
Out of the Deep is an AU Destiel fanfic, where Dean is his usual self, and Castiel is a mermaid (or Fin-Kin as they are called in this fic). You may think that doesn't work out, or sounds a tad odd, BUT BELIEVE IN YOUR GUT. THIS FIC IS FUCKING FANTASTIC. OR, IN THE WORDS OF DEAN WINCHESTER
In a sea filled to the brim of badly written fanfics, this was a pleasant surprise. IT IS WELL WRITTEN. Things aren't over/under described, the pace of the plot is admirable, despite the length. And the fact that this was the first piece of fan fiction I ever read made me have unrealistically high expectations for others, which were never fulfilled (sO I COMPETELY BLAME THIS FIC FOR MY CONTINUOUS DISAPOINTMENTS).
This fic made me angry beyond belief (at characters, that is! Not at the actual story!), it made me genuinely surprised and concerned ABOUT THE CHARACTERS (there were times where I was fighting tears, I WAS SO WORRIED), it made me smile with complete bliss, and cry, so many tears. The characters and the setting were very believable, and the characterisation was real. Even minor characters had made a noticeable change from their initial entrance in the story.
AND BOY, THE ACTUALLY MYTHOLOGY BEHIND THIS FIC WAS GREAT. KUDOS TO THE AUTHOR FOR HAVING SUCH A GREAT IMAGINATION. I was entangled into the world of the Fin-kin with barely any time, and it WAS JUST SO GOOD.
The issue that the author obviously brought up via OotD (sea animals in human captivity) was extremely well done. The portrayal of the capture, and the betrayal on the ‘wild’ animals part was very well done. In this situation, Cas was portrayed in a very true, and therefore violent nature, which I enjoyed.
The only thing I didn’t particualirly enjoy was the huge focus on the romance; and although I was still able to enjoy it and the story, it seemed overwhelming at times, and quite unnecessary? But that could just be the curse of fanfiction, and what it actually is; smut. This is why I rated this fic 4 stars instead of 5. My only reason, really, but it is reason enough for me.
BUT THE ENDING. SHIT, IT MADE ME CRY SO MUCH I SWEAR TO GOD. I WAS LITERALLY LIKE
..but when I realised that this was the end of the fic, my face very quickly channelled my inner Castiel
And you know what? It is really quite a long fanfic, but it’s worth the reading for the journey (AND ALSO ITS GOOD THAT THERE IS LOTS OF WRITING; IT TAKES LONGER TO STAY ENGROSED IN THE WORLD)
Final Verdict: If you’re a Destiel shipper, you can’t miss this! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
A diamond in the rough was my sentiment with Out of the Deep. But I'll get more into that later...
Castiel is part of a race of telepathic mermaids known as finkin. They live their lives separate and ignorant of humans and the world beyond their colony. Being a soldier among his colony, Castiel would never have thought to see himself powerless in captivity among a group of humans.
Nor to meet someone (a human) like Dean Winchester.
OOTD is one of those mammoth of a story that may put people off for it's shear length. And who can blame them? I've started so many fanfiction that catered to my word count whoring ways, but were riddled with enough proofreading errors to make Microsoft Word bleed red on my screen. And let's not forget just bad writing in general - plot holes galore or bad characterization. So yeah, I was kind of iffy about starting this.
Is OOTD perfect? Nope. It could really use some beta readers, or further proofreading (with occasional mistakes starting out, but getting more prominent towards the end) and some editing with pacing issues towards the later third. But it wasn't bad enough to turn me away from reading this story.
Characterization was pretty spot on for our cast of SPN characters, despite this being an AU. Castiel as the soldier, Sam being the geek that he is, and Dean as the righteous man at heart. I don't believe you really have to watch SPN to read this, but you'd be missing a lot of the character quirks otherwise.
Pacing was probably the only other issue I had with OOTD. It was a slow start (I don't usually like having to wait too long for the main couple to meet) and there was a good chunk of the story where Castiel and Dean weren't together. But it was still a very endearing story, if not a bit repetitive at times. There isn't a lot of "action" per se in the story, just a lot of introspection and things happening beyond the character's control - not to say there isn't any, mind you. There was plentiful merman/human sexing going on once it got started, which I actually got bored of and the author could have cut back on...
But all things aside, I enjoyed OOTD. It was something different in terms of storyline. It had great relationships (Cas/Dean and Sam/Jess), and an interesting cast of secondary characters we are familiar with from the SPN world. If you don't mind proofreading mistakes and some slow pacing at certain points in the story, then definitely give this fanfiction a try. I'm glad I did!
This is my absolute favourite fic of all time, tied with Ninety One Whiskey. I've re-read it around 4-5 times: first time in 2014 and the latest was a month ago. IT'S JUST THAT GOOD!!! Amazing and engrossing writing, the characters are spot on, the plot is moving, the art is beautiful, WOW.
I actually loved the pacing - others might call it slow because it is long but it was absolutely perfect for me. I love mulling over things so if you're similar, it'll be a beautiful and intense ride that you won't want to stop - seeing the slow burn of characters going from wary with each other to slowly building trust and eventually liking, loving, and fighting for each other is such an addictive read.
The Dean/Cas is very fleshed out and even the relationships between all the other characters feels so real and deep. The conflicts also feel real, intense, and are well-written. I was always engrossed in what happened next and have pulled multiple all-nighters for this fic. ALL of the feelings will be felt (happiness, sadness, anger, cutesy, frustration, etc).
I adore long fics and pretty much exclusively read 70k+, just bc I do love slow burns / really getting into a fic rather than just skimming the surface, so this fic is literally perfect for long fic readers.
I was hesitant going in to read this fic because it was just so dang long, and I'm usually someone who reads strictly one-shots if I read fanfics, but I'm really glad that I tackled this fic and powered through! The writer does an amazing job of capturing the different characters' thoughts, mannerisms, and ways of speaking! The text is so rich with emotion and vibrant with detail that I felt like I was reading a novel as opposed to fanfiction. Granted, there are the usual typos that always come with fanfics, but it was still incredibly well-written! Definitely a good read, and definitely worth the time it takes to read it!
The characterization was spot on! It's very long, but surprisingly easy to read! I've read it 2 times now and both times had me laughing, crying, and on the edge of my seat!
