انگیزه اولیه من از خواندن کتاب، آشنایی اولیه با ویژگی های تجاری و صنعتی کشوری بود که چند صباحی برای اقامت انتخاب کرده بودم و تفاوت اصلی این کتاب هم با کتب مشابه در مورد کشورها این است که پا را از پرداختن به جنبه های سرگرم کننده و توریست محور فراتر میگذارد و قرار است به دلایل موفقیت سوئیس در زمینه های مختلف با تکیه بر فعالیت شرکتهای بزرگ و جنبه های اقتصادی بپردازد
از این منظر، کتاب خوبی است برای فهم کسب و کارهای اساسی در سوئیس در گذر زمان و بویژه پیوستار تاریخی بین آنها، مثلا مهارت در تولید ساعت های مکانیکی که بعدها خودش را در صنعت ابزار دقیق و تجهیزات پزشکی نشان داد. اما به نظرم برای خواننده ای که بیشتر متمرکز بر فهم ریشه های موفقیت این کشور در بین کشورهای قدرتمند همسایه است و احتمالا در ذهنش مقایسه هایی انجام میدهد و کسب و کارهای موفق را در سایر نقاط دنیا هم مشاهده میکند، تکیه صرف بر وجود شرکتهای بزرگ و بین المللی با جزئیات فراوان کافی نیست. بنابراین، توجه به موقعیت جغرافیایی سوئیس در بین چهار قدرت بزرگ بین المللی در سده اخیر و نقش واسطه ای آن در دوران استعمار به منظور مبادله کالا (که در یکی از فصول به طور تلویحی به آن اشاره شده است) در کنار توجه به ساختار و فرهنگ سیاسی مسائلی هستند که می بایست در کنار مطالعه این کتاب خوانده شوند. در کل ، مطالعه ای طولانی و پرزحمت بود اما ارزشش را داشت
My actual rating could be 7 out of 10.
This is a helpful book to get familiarized with the business environment in Switzerland, and the history behind its recent business developments. However, like many other business books, solely focusing on success stories ignores the role of chance/exogenous factors and exaggerates the success factors of large and well-known firms to highlight achievements.
In other words, there are lots of factors present in other countries, and the author is not able to explain why the case of Switzerland is different from other countries. And sometimes it seems the author is a pro-Swiss and confuses this bias with the reality. For instance, in the case of Schmidheiny he asserts Swiss believe money is responsibility and they have built foundations to do their responsibilities, without addressing the role of foundations to avoid tax, or any justification that why money is different in other countries!
In controversial cases, such as Le Corbusier, I was expecting to see a more analytical approach and more comprehensive analysis of the achievements as well as controversies. But the book simply focuses on some of his well-known works and names a few more famous architects. In addition, there are lots of cases especially in the ICT chapter not even successful and it is not clear why there are included in this book. They just made the book so lengthy and tedious at some points, and its length could be half by only focusing on the most important cases.
To sum, the book claims it wants to answer three questions as why Switzerland is successful, is this success sustainable, and what can the others learn? These are really difficult questions to answer, and maybe economists or political scientists can partially answer them partially. By providing the cases of achievements without delving into more structural factors, it would be difficult to convince the reader we have answered these questions. Maybe the last chapter can be helpful, since the author addresses some of these issues, but the discussions and answers are not convincing. For instance, it does not explain the Swiss political system, and the mechanism or culture behind direct democracy; therefore, there is no systemic analysis or big picture to explain why this is a stable country.
Some thoughts on selected chapters:
The first chapters were really exciting. The chapter on the Swiss watch industry was very informative and insightful. The chapter on commodity traders was very thought-provoking. Especially the case of Marc Rich, although the author does not take a neutral approach and simply scratches the surface of such a controversial case; but one can easily read between the lines and better grasp the complicated situation of Swiss firms during the colonial period and benefiting from the conflicts around the world.
But these interesting chapters did not last until the end. The chapter on textile industry became repetitive, by explaining Switzerland was not in special position or even lost the game, but nowadays is the center of luxury businesses due to its current position. The chapter on banking showed how bank secrecy and corruption helped Switzerland to brand itself as the center of banking in the world. And how Swiss competencies can be interpreted as political advantages and lobbying power. The last cases are not even successful cases of a Swiss approach, and even the successful ones are just the results of an environment already suitable for the emergence of successful industries.

This book is for study, not for entertainment. The amount of facts collected and presented are impressive, but the stories are told with strange language at times and often pretty boring.
If you start working for a swiss company or frequently conduct business in Switzerland, the book will provide some insight into the business culture in this country, and may be the best book of its kind.

For me, this book was a bit of a disappointment. I find the case of Switzerland very interesting and wanted to get a better grasp of the social, political and economic underpinnings of all the Swiss successes. Brieding doesn’t really provide that, unfortunately.
Essentially, the book plays out as a string of separate case studies dealing, industry by industry, with how Swiss companies have taken often dominant market positions at the most profitable forefront of each industry. Each of these case studies are solid enough, if slightly conventional in style and superficial in content.
If Breiding had included a more substantial analysis of the WHOLE, of the Swiss socio-politico-economic model, I would have read his book with considerably more interest.
Essentially, the book plays out as a string of separate case studies dealing, industry by industry, with how Swiss companies have taken often dominant market positions at the most profitable forefront of each industry. Each of these case studies are solid enough, if slightly conventional in style and superficial in content.

It is a good book. It attempts to explain why Switzerland is a thriving economy and commercial destination for rich and powerful. The book is defensive but worth reading.

بصراحة من قترة وانا ابحث عن هذه النوعية من الكتب .. كيف تنهض دولة وتزدهر ماهي الاسباب التي وضعتهم على الخارطة ؟ ماهي الاسس التي نبوا عليها .. ولحبي لمدينة زيورخ الجميله كان سبباً لقراءة هذا الكتاب.

Điểm cộng của cuốn sách là việc cung cấp cho người đọc những dẫn chứng, số liệu rất chi tiết và công phu. Swiss Made cho ta cảm giác như đọc một tài liệu, một công trình nghiên cứu tổng quan về kinh tế và văn hóa Thụy Sĩ kèm theo dẫn chứng cụ thể, nhưng cảm xúc và ấn tượng mà cuốn sách tạo ra thì không. Có những đoạn mình không thể nuốt trôi cũng như nhập tâm được mặc dù đã rất cố gắng và bỏ ra rất nhiều thời gian để tập trung vào một công trình đồ sộ của tác giả như thế này.
Tìm đến Swiss Made do rất ngưỡng mộ và thực tế có điều kiện tiếp xúc với nhiều doanh nghiệp Thụy Sĩ nên muốn khai thác thêm nhiều thông tin về họ (cảm giác chủ quan thì họ vẫn khá lạnh lùng và xa cách hơn so với người Đức), tuy nhiên, sau khi đọc xong cuốn sách này thì đây vẫn là câu hỏi lớn còn bỏ ngỏ đối với mình.

Swiss made: Đây là quyển sách giúp người đọc hiểu hơn về con người, thiên nhiên, kinh tế, văn học hay rất nhiều lĩnh vực khác của đất nước Thụy Sĩ. Đất nước mà hội chữ thập đỏ đã đổi màu Quốc Kỳ của Thụy sĩ làm cờ đại diện của Tổ chức này.
Có lẽ nhắc đến Thụy Sĩ là người ta phải nhắc đến đồng hồ. Vợi vị trí địa lý thuận lợn, nằm ngay giữa trung tâm châu âu, xung quanh là các nền kinh tế lớn như Pháp, Đức và Ý. Thụy Sĩ trở thành nơi trung lập nhất thế giới, nơi để các nước có thể giảng hòa hay đàm phán với nhau, đây cũng là nơi phù hợp cho người di cư, những người bị đất mẹ ruồng bỏ, rất nhiều nhân tài người Thụy Sĩ nhưng có gốc gác từ Đức, Pháp…Do mâu thuẫn chính trí hay không phù hợp mà đến Thụy Sĩ lánh nạn và phát triển ở đây. Đồng hồ Thụy Sĩ đến từ sự tinh xảo, sự mày mò ko biết mệt mỏi của người Thụy Sĩ.
Ngoài Đồng hồ thì không thể không nhắc đến du lịch ở Thụy Sĩ, với điều kiện ít tài nguyên thiên nhiên nhưng phong cảnh ở đây thì đẹp tuyệt vời, với thế dựa lưng vào dãy nũi Anper, đây thực sự là một ưu đãi mà thiên nhiên ban tặng cho Thụy Sĩ, cũng từ dãy núi này mà người ta sinh ra trò chơi trượt tuyệt, là một thế mạnh của đất nước này về sau.
Nhắc đến Thụy Sĩ chúng ta cũng không thể quên ngành ngan hàng, hấu hết số tiền của thế giới được cất giữ ở đây, với cơ chế bảo mất thông tin khách hàng, miễn sao họ đóng thuế thu nhập đầy đủ, đây là đất nước được ưa thích nhất để gửi tiền.
Ngoài ra các tập đoàn Dược phẩm và thiết bị y tế lớn như Roche, Novartis…được thành lập tại Thụy Sỹ, các tập đoàn này lớn mạnh nhờ sự đầu tư không ngừng nghỉ vào RD, hầu như trong suốt quá trình hình thành và phá triển rất nhiều sản phẩm mới được cấp phép và lưu hành trên thị trường thuộc 2 công ty này mặc dù gần đây việc tìm ra sản phẩm mới là rất khó và chi phí tìm ra một 1 sản phẩm như vậy là rất đắt đỏ.
Ngoài các tập đoàn thương hiệu Thụy Sĩ thì các công ty đa quốc gia khác cũng mong muốn có trụ sở tại Thụy Si, vì chế độ liên bang của Thụy Sĩ giúp cho các bang giữ được chính sách thuế thấp và có sự cạnh tranh với các quốc gia khác, ngoài ra nơi đây có nhiều trường đại học nổi tiếng đã tạo ra các nhân tài sau này đạt giải Nobel như Albert Anhtanh…Các tập đoàn có trụ sở ở Thụy Sĩ như Google, IBM…

يلخص هذا الكتاب الرائع التجربة الاقتصادية السويسرية بكل أبعادها وتفرعاتها ومجالاتها. قراءة هذا الكتاب أشعرتني مدى الإمكانات التي يمكن أن تتوفر لنا حالما نهتم بجودة الإنسان ونترك كليشيهات "الفقير وين يروح" و"ما نريد نكَطع رزقه" و"نَجْحوهم خطية".
سويسرا بلد يفتقر إلى الموارد الطبيعية وجغرافيته تعزله عن العالم ولا يمتلك سواحل، تعداده السكاني اليوم حوالي ٧ مليون نسمة، ورغم ذلك فإن أكبر شركات الأدوية والأغذية والساعات والنسيج من هناك. كما وأن مجالات السياحة والفندقة هناك مزدهرة للغاية، ناهيك عن التجارة والصناعات الثقيلة والخدمات المصرفية وغيرها.
هذا الكتاب بقدر جماله، بقدر ما يثير الأحباط والحزن، لأنه يريك مدى تفاهة الإنسان لدينا مقارنة بالسويسري، حيث فارق التفكير وأفق الخيال ونوعية الأهداف وجدية السعي تجاهها. الفارق بين الإنسان عندنا وعندهم يشبه الفارق بين المياه الراكدة والنهر الجاري.

What is the impression most people have about Switzerland? Fancy watches, Swiss knifes, chocolates, banking business and Pharmaceutical industry? This book really brought me into see the untold stories about this small country. Living half year in Switzerland each year, I know the mentality of Swiss, which is good and bad part at the same time. they are charming and stubborn/ conservative, but also step by step in managing their business. The precision and hard working made this small country a paradise of Europe and of the world.
Besides the food industry (Nestle, Espresso, chocolates), the tools, machines making such as embroidery machines are next to none. I have worked for a embroidery company and was sent a training in LÄSSER AG Embroidery Machines (actually as an interpreter for our punchers), i witness a family based business could extend to the whole world with they modesty.
Many multinational corporations prefer to set up their headquarter in Switzerland for the reason of lower tax. Philip Morris has its factory in Neuchatel where I live in Switzerland, and I discovered Neuchatel has been actually an important where the watch business was started.
Hmm....Swiss knifes were not mentioned in this book.
From now on I will respect Switzerland even more.

If you are ready for a roller-coaster ride and spectacular overview about Swiss business resilience: you can't ever fail to learn from this book. It starts slowly by telling a tale of a land-locked, seemingly back water country with almost bleak future. There the story gets interesting: what I find astonishing is that most of the mega industry and growing sectors that live up to now were once founded by immigrants. Openness is no doubt the key. A thorough, well-organized and exhaustive survey of how Switzerland got to the lofty economic perch on which it sat in 2010, and more thoughts about where it was headed. Lots of compelling analysis and salient historical details, but also a lot of names and dates that won’t matter to most readers. A good read for anyone curious about how Switzerland has punched so far above its weight for so very long.

Found it really interesting at the start, what with all the different things that Switzerland is famous for - watches, chocolate and tourism, with a rather detailed background on how they came about.
But I also found the book to be a tad long for what I had hoped for, as it delved into long stories about trading, pharmaceuticals or what not. Would have preferred it to be more concise and if I really wanted to know about the rise and fall of Swiss banks, I would read another book about it.

الحقيقة لم أستطع أن أصبر حتى أنتهي من قراءة هذا الكتاب الموسوعي حتى أكتب تقييمي له. فالكتاب وترجمته يظهران من عنوانهما. الكتاب رغم دسامته مكتوب ومترجم بأسلوب رشيق يجعلك لا تريد أن تتركه. كلما حددت لنفسي عددًا معينًا من الصفحات كي أقرأه أجد نفسي أقرأ أكثر منه وأنا مستمتعة. أنصح بقراءة الكتاب لأنه مليء بالمعلومات التي يمكن الاستفادة منها في بناء نهضة الأمم.
الكتاب كبير ولكن لن تشعروا بالملل منه.

Great detailed insights about the Swiss economy across multiple verticals. The book is well organized into multiple sections and sub-sections (without a concrete storyline that connects the dots together), however, it’s clear that a huge effort was made to collect and present all the facts.

The book mostly explains the history of big companies, products and enterprises of Switzerland, how they formed and evolved. While reading the book one must appreciate the diversity of Swiss economy, and we must appreciate the authors knowledge about explaining all these sectors with detailed history. Authors research and writing is impressive. Book is like reading a "yellow pages of Switzerland" in descriptive manner without contact numbers. Readers of the book will come to know about many different sectors, machines etc.
The book mention dairy products, chocolate, coffee, mercenaries, watches, tourism, Air and Snow, Energy, Oil, Food and Grains, finance, trade of minerals, health care, hearing aids, selling Trust in distrustful world, Pharmaceutical. Logistics, Airline, Construction products, Elevators, Super Computers, Mouse and software, research centers, head offices of foreign businesses, art and architecture, attracting multinational businesses, central location, great universities, competitive tax rates, Great Cities, Talent, as historic and current major products of Switzerland economy.

sách này không ca ngợi phẩm chất gì đặc biệt, thành tựu của Thụy Sỹ đến từ việc trung lập của nó, tạo điều kiện thu hút nhân tài đến và cống hiến, hơi thiên về kinh tế học. đến cuối phân tích khá hay về sự xuống dốc dần do chi phí giờ quá đắt đỏ, chật chội, mà đa số chủ sở hữu những công ty đa quốc gia lại không phải người Thụy Sỹ nên họ sẽ phần nào không lo lắng cho vận mệnh đất nước như một người Thụy Sỹ, thiếu sự chuyển giao thế hệ, thụt lùi công nghệ... Nói chung là một cái nhìn rất chân thực và toàn cảnh.
