Lexi Graves Mysteries #5

Weapons of Mass Distraction

Rate this book
When a client drops dead during Lexi’s spin class, she’s not surprised. It’s a tough class. But within days, another death occurs on the treadmill. Then, when her running partner bites the dust, it’s personal.

Sent undercover, Lexi takes up a job as Montgomery’s newest gym instructor in a bid to find the killer. With her professional and personal lives on a collision course, Lexi is glad to take the case. If only she can convince her boss, and new boyfriend, Solomon, that she doesn’t need looking after as she uncovers a disturbing connection between the victims. Faced with a complex and dangerous case, Lexi must put all of her experience to use in order to catch the killer before another victim is claimed.

To make matters more challenging, Lexi’s best friend, Lily, is planning for better or worse. Just one problem: all the local wedding boutiques are being targeted by a highly organized gang of thieves. Roped into the surveillance rather than lose her best friend’s dress and ruin the wedding, Lexi is in danger of having too much to handle. The only thing she can do is put a killer behind bars, save the dress, and save the day… Piece of cake!

I have enjoyed reading this series, but this particular book wasn't a favorite. Some mistakes, along with problems with the lack of, or misuse of, commas kept pulling me out of the story. While the mysteries were good, and there were humorous moments with Lily, the rhythm wasn't there. I still feel no warmth towards her chosen love interest, and sadly never have. Her former boyfriend was the one, I think. I do have the next one downloaded and do plan to read it along the way. Fingers crossed that it reflects its former endearing self.

This is the fifth book in the Lexi Graves series and this one, like the previous ones, was a fun diversion. After reading these nearly one after the other, though, some of the books' shortcomings are edging out a bit of my enjoyment. Some of my peeves:

Lexi continues to miss some pretty obvious clues, still makes rash decisions and doesn't call for backup when it clearly is the right thing to do, and still gets her panties in a wad over not being taken seriously when her colleagues do so despite her rookie mistakes.

Chafer clearly is English and tends to use British colloquialisms with her American characters (i.e. graft in America implies illegally obtaining money rather than the English meaning of hard work) and doesn't understand some American traditions and procedures (i.e. a rehearsal dinner usually follows a rehearsal of the wedding and takes place the night before the wedding rather than a fancy dinner taking place alone a week or so before).

I usually like a bit of relationship drama, but the whole "cheating" business with Maddox really bugs me. He never did cheat, and it should have occurred to Lexi that the whole thing was part of his undercover ruse. Even if it didn't, she owed it to him to listen to what he had to say and, if she truly was "falling in love" with him, she also owed him her trust unless he proved unworthy of it. Instead, she rationalized her sleeping with Solomon as "not cheating" since she had broken up with Maddox when he didn't actually cheat. In this book, Maddox actually takes the blame for their breakup! Although there was poor communication on both sides, the bulk of the blame is on Lexi and frankly, she should own up to it. While she may be better paired with Solomon, she treated Maddox like crap and I like her less for it.

Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable series and I definitely will read the next books. Given my increasing annoyance with some details, though, I may wait a bit to do so.

Camilla Chafer gets better with every book and I had a ball with the first one. Although Maddox is dreamy and a great guy, Soloman has more respect for Lexy as a person. The story of the stolen wedding dresses, while actually serious, helped provide a lighter balance to the murders of the people from the gym, especially Lexie's friend. It felt like she had stronger reactions to the negatives in this book but I see that more as a development of the writing style rather than character development. Lisa's wedding preparations were sidenotes that kept the personal feel that is one of the things that makes this series special.

Perfect amount of intrigue, action and a side of steamy romance and Lily/ lexi antics. A mystery on top of a mystery. Some of it is a bit confusing but in the end, it becomes clear. And Lily using her bridezilla powers for good!

I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed them all. Only complaint I have is Lexie switching boyfriends in the middle of the series. Don't get me wrong, I love both Solomon and Maddox, but I just wish one of them didn't have to get hurt. In this book, Lexie sees two people drop dead and finds a third person, a friend, dead. She goes undercover to look for clues and winds up almost dying herself. In the meantime, she also undertakes a pro bono case, working with her future sister-in-law. I love this series and can't wait for the next book to come out!

I was so disappointed in this book. I took a long time to buy this book (2 days ago) because I just couldn't stomach how badly Maddox was treated by Lexi in previous books. I agree with another reviewer that stated Solomon underhandedly "got" Lexi. I am hoping all of these things are somehow "revealed" to her and she ends up with Maddox. I too will be finished with the series if Maddox does not return. Multiple typos and word misshaps. My favorite is when Lexi calls herself!

The story line of this one was pretty good although it lacked the humour of the others. I found Lexi and Lily a bit irritating when they were together this time and their decisions at times (especially Lily's) just too stupid. I don't believe for a moment that Solomon would put up with it. I am still cross that Lexi choose the wrong man and this does spoil things for me a bit. Still there were some tense moments and it's still an easy fun read. The title's entry in the book was way too contrived and cringeworthy. It was obviously a title that sounded good with no solid back up. It would have been better to try and not put the title in the book. There was an absolute howler of a mistake in the book with the warfarin storyline. The author did not do basic research here sadly and has a character who is immediately poisoned with a drug that in reality takes 3 days to have a noticeable effect and certainly not the one that was written. Not good really. But I like the series despite these problems and will read some more.

Wonderful Mystery

I love this series more and more with each book I read. I love Lexi and John together. I also like the fact that Adam is still in Lexi’s heart just not in the same way John is and that she finally said those four little words to him.

I look forward to more Lily and Lexi escapades. Read to start the next in the series. Just miss the narration from audible.

C.chafer/weapons of mass distractions.

In this series lexie goes undercover for her boss solomon, in solving a crime at a gym where two people dies, while, helping her friend solve a case, she herdelf, lily, takes on, with lexie, her best friend helps her. In the meantime ex--boyfriend cop maddox, starts a new career, that leaves lexie mix emotions about him. The price seri e is well written that makes you want to read more. Kudos to the author

I couldn't complete this book. The grammatical errors and continual repeating of cliche phrases finally got the best of me. I enjoyed the first three books, but, beginning with #4, I became annoyed with the obvious "briticisms." The characters are supposed to be Americans. They should talk like Americans.

I didn't get halfway through this one, and I won't be reading anything further by this author.

Tedious

Could not complete this book. Saw in summaries of future books she marries Solomon. Should have stayed single and been independent. Maddox was a much better fit, if she had to marry someone, it should have been him. She really didBooks are repetitious and boring. Just not a good story teller. Found myself going to the end of the book instead of reading through all the fluff.

Love

I'm truly appreciating this series. The heroine started out bumbling, a version of Stephanie Plum. Luckily, the author decided one bounty hunter series was sufficient and now Lexi is a badass version of Charlie Davidson.

This story was okay. Somewhat boring. It was poorly edited with noticeable mistakes. The biggest one was the knife protruding from the victim in ch.3, but in ch.10 it’s missing. As in not being found in the body.

Thrilling read

Another thrilling read with Lexi and her crazy family and cohorts.
I found another book series where the characters become good friends and you hate finishing the stories as you don’t want a separation waiting for the need book

Good. A couple of "how did...." passages, but enjoyable nonetheless. Solomon almost seems like a different man at times.

Mischief

Sad. Lexi loses a friend all because two people got up to mischief. Wedding dress bandits put Lily on alert and she goes on a stakeout with Lexi to protect her big day.

Lexie is a favorite of mine. Great characters. Funny situations. Good family dynamics. Silly and serious. Romance, intrigue and, thank goodness, no awful descriptive sex scenes.

Weapons of Mass Distraction -- Lexi Graves Mysteries, Book 5

This story is not as strong as the previous books in this series. It spent more time following Lexi's friend, Lily, and her impending wedding. There was still the main mystery and as always, a smaller mystery that Lexi had to solve, but the tightness that the last story had just wasn't there.

I found my mind wandering in the middle of this story, and it didn't really focus until nearly the end of the book. While I was led to believe that maybe book four's story would be a part of this book, there was only a brief mention of it in this one. I guess that story will pick up in a later book.

Also, the ending is semi-sorta cliffhangerish. Bummer. And it looks like one of Lexi's love interests moves away at the end of book five as well. Though that's good for the whole series, it's also a little bittersweet. Because of that, and of Lily's wedding (neither have lived in the same building since book four,) there was a finality to this story. Almost like the series is turning a corner and getting ready to proceed in a new direction. Now sure how I feel about that.

Still planning on reading more books in this series, but this one, while still good and mostly entertaining, wasn't as strong.

Three stars.

"Weapons of Mass Distraction" is another entertaining installment in the Lexi Graves series. This time our friend, Lexi, witnesses a Spin classmate keel over from an apparent heart attack or was it? A few days later another exercise classmate keels over after drinking from her water bottle. Lexi is suspicious especially when her running mate calls and says she desperately needs to see Lexi but when she gets there the woman is found dead from stab wound. Lexi is determined to find out who is responsible so she goes undercover in the gym.

Meanwhile, Lily and Jord are getting ready for their wedding; however, someone has been breaking into the wedding boutiques and cleaning them out. With Lexi's help, Lily is determined not to let this happen to her and spoil her big day.

Lexi has moved into her new house, she and Solomon are dating unbeknownst to her coworkers but Lexi is thinking she doesn't want to hide anymore. One thing for sure, nothing is ever predictable or dull in the life of Lexi Graves.

Once again there is plenty of action and intrigue in this installment but I was also glad Lexi finally dealt with the Adam Maddox situation. Now we can move on to other interesting development in the life of our favorite P. I.

Lexi's back and forth between the two love interests is growing tiresome. Just drive a stake through it already. I'm hoping we all get to move on in the next installment, but I'm not optimistic. This man-angst isn't fair to the characters, and isn't fair to the readers, either.

In my opinion, it's time for the author to add some dimension to some of the characters other than Lexi. All we know about Solomon is that he's a good lover, and seems to love Lexi. All we know about Maddox is that he's a good lover and seems to love Lexi. Wait... that sounded familiar. Ok, so our knowledge of Solomon is not entirely that limited (he did raise his siblings after his parents died), but that is about all we know about Maddox.

Grammar issues continue, as to the Brit-isms. Little likelihood either will change in future installments.

3.75 Stars...Still enjoying this series and looking forward to the next book. The mysteries(Lexi's cases) were well done in this installment. Romantically, the author seems to have a problem 'keeping the heat' after she gets a couple together. I also don't understand the characters motivations concerning their relationship completely. Since it's chick lit, there is not much exploration of that, so it leaves me wanting more. Also, why in the heck couldn't Lexi know about the top floor?? Then he's all like..."I was waiting for you to ask." WTH? If she could know, then why didn't her key card work?! Little stuff like that bugs me;) It's probably more of my expectations not matching the genre than an actually problem with the book, though. On to the next!

I love Lexi and Solomon!!! They are fantastic together and do not disappoint in this the 5th in the series. The romance between Delgado, who works with Lexi and Serena, Lexi's sister has advanced to the point of marriage!

In this story there a few things happing, first we have a murder of a Simontech employee, and this leads to connections with three other murders. You have to read this story if only for the picture of Lexi teaching a class in health club. I laughed so hard I cried!!

Then we have the gang who is stealing high end wedding dresses and again I laughed so hard!!

A fun, romantic, mystery - it has everything!

Ok. They can end the series here. Good thing it's not the end. Because Camilla Chafer is a very talented writer.

So happy Solomon is so good for Lexi.

Few things running in my head:
That Rafferty dude will come back. I just know it. I'm imagining the guy in White Collar tv series... Their name sounds the same too. I wonder what Solomon was thinking when he sent Lexi to dates with these yahoos. (I'm talking about the previous book)

Maddox... How can he behave as if it's ok if he really like/loved Lexi. How can he go into meetings etc.

I totally laughed at the scene by the stairwell in their office!

Yes my thoughts are random. :p I love this series.

Awww, I'm going to miss Maddox, Soloman is a great guy too but I'm #TeamMaddox. Another great book and I love how Lexi always ends up resolving more than one case in the books. It was great that we got a bit more of Lilly in this book more than in the others and I'm happy she's finally marring Jord!

So looking forward to the next book and I hope we still get some glims of Maddox and more interaction with Lexi, my heart broke a bit when they broke up so i will always hope for those two to get back together!

Chic Lit at its finest. Lexi goes undercover at the Gym rescues BF Lily's wedding dress (before her brothers wedding) is accosted in her own home and solves a series of murders. All with panache. Her love life is sweet with Solomon and bitter sweet with her ex Maddox. Life may not be quite perfect but there's a lot of fun getting it there.
Having read all the others in this series it's easy to spot the maturity emerging from the character. A series to be proud of - congratulations to the author.
