Ancient artifacts provoke fresh fear when a night at the museum goes from fun to freaky!Jane is ready for the time of her life. Tonight she and forty-nine other girls will be spending an actual night in a museum! At first, she’s making lots of new friends and having a ton of fun, but the stakes get raised when one girl, Daria, dares her to take a tour of the museum after lights out. The girls have heard that one of the mummies in the Ancient Egyptian exhibit comes to life when the museum closes. Jane accepts the dare. After all, there’s no way a mummy can come to life. I am not really sure what to rate this. On the one hand it was good and I think it deserves at least 4 stars, however, with Megan being a total paranoid whiny brat I don't want to give more than 3 stars.
And Megan was really the only big problem I had with the book, she was so annoying and whiny that it just ruined it for me. She kept seeing things that weren't there, complained, whined about anything and everything and ruined things for everyone else. She even broke stuff, because in her fear she stumbled backwards. This is not the only situation, there are many situations with Megan which annoyed me (and thankfully it seems that most of the characters were also highly annoyed with Megan's behaviour). I don't get why Megan was added, or what role she really played except annoy the living daylights out of people. I was also delighted when we came to the walking around + searching for a mummy part. No more Megan! Sadly, it wasn't long before she popped up and started crying/whining/whimpering/half screaming/complaining all the time again.
Jane, and also Lucy, were great characters and I really liked them all. Jane was a bit afraid, but she felt so real, because she also showed bravery and also showed that she cared about people. Lucy was the brave one, the one who took on every dare and wasn't afraid (of much). She was really interesting.
Of course, I didn't approve of what they did. Wandering around the museum at night is one thing, but dropping and touching precious stuff? Just no. That is just not good, I do hope they were honest in the end.
The story wasn't that creepy, I wouldn't give it a 4 out 5 on the creep-o-meter. More like 2 or maybe 1.5. There were some parts that made my heart race a bit, but not a lot. Which is a shame, I had expected something grand and creepy to happen.
Though that ending, it was perfect. For once we didn't get a boring open ending, or something strange happening that wasn't explained. No, instead we get a twist, but it is explained and it was good. I won't spoil anything, just that you probably won't see it coming. :)
All in all, a decent book, but Megan just ruined a lot of the story with her constant whining. I would still recommend it, but just be warned that you might want to erase Megan from the story.
The ending felt a bit obvious to me. I don’t know if everyone else felt the same way but I could see it from a mile away! I found this creepover wasn’t scary at all. It definitely was a fun read but not my favourite. Also, Meghan was one of the most annoying characters in the whole book!! She left me feeling super mad every time she spoke cause I knew she was about to say something dumb. That girl has to get her priorities straight!! She ruined the book for me as she had nothing to add to the book except to be a whiny kid.
Of the 14 Creepover books I've read in the past few years, this is the probably the least creepy (although it has the largest sleepover!). I have a great love for ancient Egypt so I enjoyed that aspect of the plot, but the Creep-o-Meter on the back cover rated this a low 4, which means there ought to be scares, or at least suspense. I didn't find that to be the case, which was disappointing. The reader was given a nice tour of some of the exhibits in the museum, but the only real worry was whether the girls would get caught wandering about the halls after hours. And that didn't feel creepy or particularly suspenseful. There was a nice reveal at the end, but again, nothing scary, just something that prompted an "Oh, wow" reaction.
Not a badly written book at all, Off the Wall simply needed a few genuinely frightening moments. And with mummies around that should have been a snap to do!
OMG this one was definitely THERE on the creep factor! The premise is that there's a mummy loose at the museum at night and that part of the plot is pretty obvious but there's an epilogue plot twist that really got me! I think the target audience for this book would find it super creepy and would love it!
Off the Wall surprised me. It was first book in the series I read and it managed to stump me. While I figured out one of the twist the other blind-sided me. The characters were well developed and the timeline allowed for a natural progression of events.
I'd give it a 2.5 stars because I managed to read the whole book. The story did not capture my interest from the beginning and I felt like I had to drag through the first couple of chapters. The story finally picked up at the 3rd chapter, but it was for a brief moment, as it soon dragged again. The scenes seem slow for me, like nothing exciting nor eventful was happening enough, just girls daring to sneak though the museum at night. The only reason why I kept reading, was because I wanted to know what the 'secret' was, which was indicated in the blurb. At the last quarter of the book was when the story actually picked up for real, it felt more engaging, more tension, more mysterious and a little exciting. I actually was able to guess correctly or almost correctly what was the 'secret', or in this case, what the 'secrets' were, so I wasn't surprised at the big reveal at the end. Overall, for me the story was so, so. Wasn't quite my cup of tea. I believe this book is most suitable for young teens, and pre-teens.
