SCANDALOUS VIRTUE by Brenda Hiatt. First impressions can be most deceiving! Nessa, Lady Haughton, has been trained all her life to be a model of English propriety and virtue. When Jack and Nessa meet, each thinks the other is exactly the ticket to the changes they are seeking; then the sparks fly!
Annette Blair's romantic comedies owe their beginnings to a root canal and a reluctant trip to Salem Massachusetts. Though she had once proclaimed she'd never write a contemporary, she stumbled into the serendipitous role of Accidental Witch Writer on that trip. Funny how she managed to eat her words even with an aching jaw. Magic or destiny; Annette's Bewitching Romantic Comedies became her first National Bestsellers.
Her August '07 release, SEX AND THE PSYCHIC WITCH, the first in her Triplet Witch Trilogy, hit the #1 bestselling spot for contemporary romance-humorous on Barnes & Noble. It also hit B & N's overall bestseller lists for mass market and fiction mass market and #7 for romance mass market, topping Nielsen BookScan and Borders Bestseller lists as well.
book 1 -Unforgettable Rogue - this was kind of forgettable Being in love with a person who is in love with you but feels like you should love anyone else just felt tedious. Foe heavens sake someone just say your feelings!
book 2 - A Lady By Chance - This was not the usual run of the mill plot which I enjoyed. It was at some times difficult to believe a person can be so positive and upbeat and trusting with their history but I've had to believe farther fetched things so OK. I liked the writing.
book 3 - Salt Bride - This novel had a novel plot also and a villain so evil it was hard to read of those dastardly deeds but at the same time easy to read since you were rooting for good to win. The moral would have to be that you should always be the complete master of your own soul!
book 4 - Scandalous Virtue - One of the first books ever where the story did not end after the search, hunt and acquisition of a spouse. I usually feel cheated wanting at least a epilogue to complete the plot but this went father than that and I almost was put off by it. Don't know why.
OMG. There were so many good reviews. I just can't believe what I am missing. Reading the first two books made me feel like being in a bad movie ... you wish it would just end already. I wished I had taken the opportunity to read sample chapters first. I would have known the writing was amateurish. The storytelling is lacking. The plot development is poorly developed. The transition is confusing.
By no means am I a literary expert, but I paid for a product that seemed like it would be good. I normally finish books, even bad ones. I could not go beyond four or five chapters.
There are gross grammatical errors that are typical in common writing. In addition, there are sentences that refer to "he" but there are two males. As a result, the reader can't clearly figure out which "he". Characters are not introduced well. Characters are also flat. Conversations are confusing and stale.
To improve, these books need to be edited. At present level, I would not pay for it.
Unforgettable Rogue (review as posted on individual novel) 4 star This is the second Annette Blair novel I've read, both in this series, both a slow read for me. Both plots I enjoyed and the characters as well so it must be the writing that is a bit tedious for me. I would dearly loved to have read one of the other romances in this story, as a novella possibly
A Lady by Chance 3 stars I started this got to chapter 13 and forgot about it for months. So I picked it up again and started over. It was interesting enough to keep me reading it finally. Intriguing plot. Heroine seemed suited to older than 18 but then at times showed immaturity befitting her age.
Salt Bride (not a Regency but Georgian) As reviewed on second edition 5 star I started reading it in Scandalous Brides (Four Bestselling Full-Length Regency Novels) but soon learned the author had re-released and updated version so I switched to Salt Hendon Collection: A Georgian Historical Romance Boxed Set. I found the beginning easier to read with the changes so happy I switched. Although I found it a little difficult trying to place the different characters but once I sorted out who was who and how they were related/comnected I was good. It isn't your run of the mill historical romance. It has an indepth plot with great character development. I would read it again so it gets 5 stars from me.
Scandalous Virtue 4 star I enjoyed this one. Unique story. Was nearly put off with Jack's decision to get information out of a previous paramour lol. I loved that Nessa was trying to help her sister loosen up and enjoy life. The puritanical aspect of the story was one I could relate to with my own upbringing but I didn't break free until I was much older.
This is a great deal. I love Annette Blair's Rogues Club. I read Unforgettable Rogue as single book before buying this set. It's worth the $.99 for this book alone. The scene where Hawk breaks the bed is one I've remembered since I first read it. Alex's seduction of her husband is just fun to read.
A Lady by Chance by Cheryl Bolen is another good read if you're willing to dispense with it being a realistic historical. The romance moves from two people who hate each other to happily ever after. And isn't that what most of us want from a romance? Bolen does it with interesting characters, which is requisite for this type of story where you know how it will end just not how they'll get there.
Salt Bride by Lucinda Brant has a complex plot with a villainess wrecking havoc on the lives of hero and heroine. Marriage comes early in this book, but begins with two hearts wounded by past wrongs. While love still hovers under the pain, the two must learn to trust again before it can come to full bloom. The villainess in this book is truly despicable and twisted. She uses anything and anyone to make events work to her advantage causing confusion and strife for all involved. Very good book.
The last title, Scandalous Virtue, is another terrific read. The story of Jack’s change from rake to respectable husband is fairly standard. The true spice of this novel comes from the heroine’s introduction to the more scandalous ways of the ton. Coming from a family and first marriage of extreme propriety, she decides to grab onto freedom and flirt with scandal. As Jack becomes more sensible, Nessa heads the other direction and takes the story into some interesting twists.
Out of 4 full length novels in this collection of Scandalous Brides, Salt Bride is the best with a nice balance of angst and action. It contains fully developed characters, a deliciously evil antagonist and a Hero who is initially at least, a right bastard to a heroine who is sweet, long suffering, patient and quietly wise.
The good news is that none of this is a prosaic as it sounds. The hero of Salt Bride soon mends his ways, the heroine finds her backbone and becomes very strong and the evil antagonist acts in believable, if slightly disturbing ways. My only real criticism of this novel is that the author seemed too anxious for readers to forgive the hero by allowing him to mend his ways a little too soon. I would have liked for him to remain cold and aloof a bit longer to add to and maintain the disquieting tension of a deck stacked against the heroine. That said, this novel, when considered alone, still receives 5 stars from me.
Salt Bride is a fully developed, stand-alone novel but there is a sequel, Salt Redux, which I have purchased and is in my reading queue. The other novels in the collection are just okay in my opinion and while there are sequels to some of them I was not sufficiently engaged to purchase and follow up with those. Of course, the authors offer you snippets of other books in their catalogue so there's quite a lot of reading to be done between the covers of the Scandalous Brides collection.
Bottom line: The series is a pretty good collection of Georgian and Regency era romances with some being better than others. Overall, I felt that the collection was worth my time and my money.
Overall for such a discount these were great reads. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd books, the 4th was okay (flimsy and droll plot, just scattered scenes that felt as if they weren't leading anywhere, but well developed characters that grow and change). The 1st book was hard to get through. There was an overt melodramatic plot with a beauty and beast motif that was alluded to so many times I skimmed a lot, self-depreciating characters to the point I couldn't sympathize with them at all, and so many redundant a repetitive portions, I grew bored. Although I didn't enjoy the first book, it is definitely worth the cheap price for the other 3.
I loved each and every one of these books, so much so that I had to go on and buy further books by each author, especially Lucinda Brant's Salt Bride. I just could not read that book and not find out what happened next. Each book in this set kept me captivated from beginning to end and I fell in love with all the heroes and heroines. You definitely get your money's worth and some with this set, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
This is a GREAT collection! Each book is a winner. I have already purchased the rest of Annette Blair's Rogue Club Series and Lucinda Brant's sequel to her "Salt" book from this collection.
Why have I not read Annette Blair before? I could slap myself since I have seen her books many times in the past pop up as free offers on various sites.
If you love regency historical romance novel, do yourself a favor and jump on this. It is fabulous!
When written, held my interest, and had some great romance and fun. All the qualities required to keep you engaged. Especially enjoyed Lucinda Brant's Salt Bride; so much that I took a detour and read Sault Redux (sequel to Salt Bride) before finishing the other books. Read on!!
I really loved Salt Bride ..a rich, heart-breaking story with strong willed H and h. I'd love to see the h a bit more stronger and sassy but she'll do. This is a novel, 329 pages.
The rest are okay maybe I just not into heroines that are seducing their men, hence the title.
The books themselves were okay, but the deal was outstanding. I was looking for historicals by authors I hadn't read and this fit the bill. Salt Bride is the only one I'm interested in reading the sequel to. And maybe the prequel of the unforgettable rogue.
All the stories were really good. They were quite entertaining. I really did enjoy the characters and their various stunts they did. They got into some really bad situations yet managed to come out smelling like a rose.
Scandalous virtue..Brenda Hiatt ..well written and interesting..good chemistry between hero and heroine..rake marries innocent widow who wants to enjoy her life
