Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga.
She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly.
When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.

She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.

I am so torn about this! I absolutely loved about 98% of this, but the 2% I didn't like are very hard to swallow for me. Because while the first time the two protagonists have sex *may* have started out as dub-con (which is debatable) it definitely turns into non-con and to say that that makes me uncomfortable would be an understatement, especially because I think the story would have been better if he had actually stopped when he was told to stop.

The sad thing is, however, that this sort of thing isn't unusual for this genre, and I admit that I have come to - accept isn't the right word, because that implies that I approve of it which I really don't, but it's how it is and either I stop reading that sort of thing or I don't. And the truth is, the things I like about this genre in general and this series in particular at this point are more than the things I don't like, so I'm going to keep reading this. I do wish there was more consensual sex happening, though. (I really am conflicted about this, however.)

Review for volumes 1-12

Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.

It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.

The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.

I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.

This was really great! At first I thought "How can this love story work?" Now I'm wanting it to work soooo badly! I love the characters. It reminds me of Junjo Romantica in the sense that they're young adults living in Japan that ultimately fall in love with each other. The school setting makes me think this too. It was great! Can't wait to read volume 2!

I really liked this manga when I was younger. When the ovas came out I watched them so many times and they I read the manga. Until I lost interest for a while.

Something like a half a year ago a friend got obsessed and told me to read it with her. I did and I loathed it so much it was absurd.

I know pretty much all manga have this "I'll continue even when you say no cause I know you'll like it" shit, and mostly it doesn't annoy me since it's not that hardcore, it doesn't feel like rape. But this manga is special. I've never read a character so disgusting as Morigana. He uses every single thing as emotional manipulation, every thing his senpai has ever done or said, if that doesn't work he'll treat to go away to get what he wants. Maybe this is a "common thing" in BL manga but this.. this is so evident it makes me gag.

I wish I could unread it. It makes me angry.

YES YES YES!!!! WOOOOOTTT! OMG THANK YOU Elena for the rec!!! Looooveee itttt! <3 Souichi Tatsumi is succhhhhh a tsundere! omg which makes this that much better. ^^ Heehee.

I mean it kind of started as "rape" and it was kind of didn't But I like to think of it as not rape (maybe I am just running away from reality but I just didn't see it as rape). I see it as Tastsumi running away from his own feelings. I mean the way that he acted before reminded me of someone who is gay but hate to admit that fact. He apparently hates gays, but I think it was because he couldn't stand the thought of being gay himself so he kind of throws his hate towards other.

What happens later was sweet and cute. *swirls around in rainbow*. Gosh I love tsundere character <3 Tatsumi you sweet little thang~ I can't wait to read more! I don't know what to say I don't want to just give out the whole volume to you guys. :P

Oh right, the art wasn't the best but it was good enough. I mean I have seen worst and I love seen better.

And I really enjoyed how the manga started! I laughed sooooo hard!!! Tatsumi was definitely a character! So a good intergration of comical effects and well...yaoi.

I mostly liked this one. I always feel kinda bad and/or awkward when there's nonconsensual stuff in bl, but this wasn't that bad? I like the dynamic they have going on so I'll probably keep going with the series :3

So Koisuru Boukun, which is what I know this series by, is a pretty straightforward example of my overwhelming preference for and ability to overlook otherwise ostensible elements of manga counterpointed against regular ol' fiction. Face it, if anyone write a book about a guy who's been in love with his college friend for 5 years and decided to "break the ice" one drunken, almost inexcusable night, it's gonna get crucified. By all.

But in a manga? I'm willing to forbear the potentially negative message within. Because when Morinaga aches, I ache. And when Tatsumi gets hit with confusion, so do I. There's something about Hinako's style that draws out complex emotions in simple ways. It's pretty much the basis of my love for this series.

Well, and "Aru Hi Mori no Naka."

Do you think love has an expiration date?

Probably the most disturbing manga I have read this year ever. And not because it contains rape, no its because reader is supposed to feel sympathetic to the rapist. WTF? Don’t get me wrong, I like him he is interesting character but I don’t feel sorry for him. Tetsuhiro is wonderful he is delusional, violent and yet tender, unintentionally cruel and friendly, manipulative and without empathy. He looks like a nice guy but he isn’t! It’s just the perfect act so masterful that he believes it himself. And then there is Souichi who seems to be egoistic a**hole but deep down is lonely, vulnerable and guilty feeling guy.

SPOILERS!!!

Meet Tetsuhiro Morinaga who for the last five years has been hopelessly in love with his colleague and friend Souichi Tatsumi. Tatsumi is high maintenance friend; he is commanding, sometimes rude and openly homophobic despite he knows very well Moringa is homosexual. On other hand Tatsumi hasn’t changed his attitude towards Moringa because of that and also is still in quite friendly terms with his younger homosexual brother who lives in America.
Once drinking in Morinaga’s flat Tatsumi orders other to go to the shop and bring more booze what Morinaga does. Meanwhile Tatsumi is ransacking his friend apartment looking for spirit and finds bottle of alcohol sprinkled with some rape drugs. He drinks it.
Later in the night Tatsumi wakes up feeling strangely weak and ill-the effects of the drug. Morinaga isn’t very distraught by the fact his friend can barely move as his attention is to a boner his friend is spouting.
Morinaga then insists that he will help out jerking off Tatsumi. Morinaga reasoning is M”I will get you off.” T: “I don’t need your help!” M: “If you don’t come at least once, it will be painful, won’t it?” Why would Tatsumi need help to jerk off? Because he can’t move well because his coordination is off thanks to drugs. It doesn’t end with Moringa giving hand job it doesn’t ends with blow job no, it ends with Morinaga raping Tatsumi in his butt. While Tatsumi is yelling, screaming and begging to stop!
Later in the morning Morinaga has the guts to yell “I’m the only one to blame?”

Morinaga leaves school and work. Tatsumi gets glares from his fellows and from his little sister as they blame him that Morinaga is absent. After some time Tatsumi starts to worry that Morinaga committed suicide, starts to blame himself that Morinaga is missing and also to what happened that night, at the end he is worried and so much longing for Morinaga who, we learn, is his only friend that he realises that he would forgive Morinaga for assaulting him.
Volume ends with Morinaga saying: “He (Tatsumi) keeps saying “blackmailer” and “you don’t fight fair”...I guess its true. Even when he keeps yelling it over and over...When you got down to it, the weapon is my threat to withdraw from school, so to me his attacks are sweet as a declaration of love.”

Okay, so I liked the characters, sort of. I liked how they interacted in everyday life, sort of. But...

Yeah, rape. This story (like so many BL stories) contains rape. Rape where we are supposed to sympathize and feel sorry for the rapist. Rape where the rapist says "how could you expect me to see you like that and not do anything" and things of that varity, and we as readers are supposed to be on the rapist's side during this "defense".

After the victim gets rightously horrified And like in so many other BL stories, the rape is the first step in the development of the "romance".

It's very disturbing to see this happen again and again in supposed romance stories, making it clear that the authors either don't know that they're writing a rape scene or just don't care. I don't know which is worse.

Yes, there is no con.
Yes, Morinaga blackmails his senpai to have sex with him.
But this is a Yaoi manga.
If you are familiar with this genre, you know that the relationship between a seme and a uke often contains stuff like that.
So, what's all the fuss about?
Speaking of seme and uke, I liked very much the fact that in this manga the roles are not clearly defined.
Usually, the seme is the active part in the sexual relationship, and has a dominant personality.
On the other hand, the uke is the sexual passive counterpart, and has a passive or a passive-aggressive personality.
In this manga Morinaga, the seme, has a passive-aggressive personality, and Senpai has a dominant one.
So, because I'm tired of uber macho seme types, and of delicate and blushing ukes, I liked this manga.

I have been avoiding the first volume of this manga because I have already watched OVA 1 & OVA 2 (the OVAS are exactly the same as Vol 1), and of course, I am against rape. True, when I watched the OVAS I was immediately attracted to this manga, and I read it as soon as I could. I liked Sempai, despite his grumpy behavior. And God forgives me, I also liked Morinaga, the rapist, who has been in love with Sempai for so long he had to take his chance when he could.

I am missing them a lot. I have been re-reading Vol 2 to Vol 7 regularly. This is my favorite yaoi manga, even more than Junjou Romantica. I want so much other OVAS of this manga.

I'm taking one star off for that rape scene at the beginning, but all in all I enjoyed this story :)
Even though Senpai can be a little harsh at times, I was laughing out loud every time he said "Bastard!" cause all I could think about is Jen from the IT Crowd and this scene --->

Finale thoughts on the series

Going into Koisuru Boukun for the third time, four years after my last re-read, I didn't remember a whole lot about the series, except for the premise and a couple of random scenes.
My 16 year-old self used to really like this manga, and I was curious if it held up to my current tastes.
So, what have I discovered?

The positive
The relationship between the two leads is more complex and open to interpretation than I initially thought. Back in the day I used to think it was pretty straightforward: the tyrant from the title was senpai, who behaved rudely and didn't accept poor Morinaga's feelings.

But oh, how wrong I was.
The real abuser is so obviously Morinaga himself!

Morinaga is the delusional and obsessive one, he never actually listens to senpai and always takes advantage of his vulnerability. Senpai, on the other hand, doesn't have friends beside Morinaga /which results in him being ill-tempered, which, again, leads to him having no friend/. It makes him emotionally dependent on Morinaga, so he's unable to push him away and unwillingly feeds Morinaga's delusions.

It's really not that simple, huh.

Also, the characters stay consistent throughout the whole series, and that's always a good thing.
And their relationship conflict does more or less get a satisfying resolution.

The negative
It's one of those bl manga series that run for decades. The first volume came out in 2004, and the series is not finished yet. The series is old and new installments are far in between. Which makes the story very very repetitive, and all the character growth achieved in any given volume is forgotten by the time the next one is out.

An average volume of Koisuru Boukun goes like this:
You meet the characters in their status quo >>
Some minor thing happens that makes them slightly reconsider their attitude towards each other (senpai slightly opens towards Morinaga's feelings and Morinaga slightly contemplates how senpai might actually feel)>>
They have sex >>
You hope that THIS time something's going to change >>
Nothing changes and even the most miniscule character growth the characters experience gets neglected in the next volume.

This goes on until volumes 7 and 8, aka the volumes where the two leads sort of talk their relationship through and the central conflict gets resolved, and everyone is happy ever after. (The scene in v8 when they finally come to terms with each other and get emotional and whatnot is exceptional by the way, it used to get under my skin when I was younger and it still does).

So, the conflict is resolved in volume 8. But it's far from being the last volume in the series, isn't it? Exactly.
From what I underdtand, v8 was supposed to be the last installment, but (due to financial success, I assume) the series still goes on.

Everything post v8 feels like a collection of extras/after stories. The characters basically just... hang out? They do all the bl trope activities, like going to hot springs or whatever.
A good thing: they actually talk about their problems/emotions with each other. And their relationship is consensual. (Both points feel weird and I don't think I'll ever get used to it /considering the first half of the series/, but I'm sort of into it)
A bad thing: it gets boring, because nothing happens. I'm mostly over my fluff phase, so I didn't care much.

Conclusion
Have I enjoyed the series this time around? Well, sort of. But for different reasons than before.
16yo me was here for sex scenes and fluff in later chapters. 20yo me finds sex scenes too cringy and fluff too boring.
I regarded first two vollumes as a psycological portrait which was fun to analyze, and then I started to treat the series as a historical document, research material of some sort.
And I got tired of all the repetitiveness.

P.S. Back in the day I used to stare at senpai's hair for unnecessarily long periods of time, wishing to have hair as long as his. Now I can proudly say that after years of diligent growing out my hair /and occasionally ruining it by bleaching/ I have, indeed, not only achieved proper senpai hair length, but also got it to be even longer than his. And yes, I consider it one of my greatest life achievements.

pre-review

This is my third time reading it.
But previous two times were when i was 16 and my tastes have drastically changed since.

I wasn't expecting to like this manga.... But i still do?
The premise does very much feel early 2000s.
But the relationship between the two leads are so complex and multi-layered from the very first volume, i can barely keep myself from writing a full-length essay about it.

I almost want to rate it five stars. The only thing keeping me from it is that i vaguely remember that the actual emotional mess starts in later volumes.

Review originally posted on The Book Adventures of Annelise Lestrange :)

The Story

Tetsuhiro Morinaga is a hopeless romantic. Nothing really wrong there, right? Well, it gets wrong if you start to day dream about your very heterosexual and homophobic work college, as it is the case with Morinaga. He has a huge crush on Souichi Tatsumi, his supervisor at his part time job in their college.

After a very frustrating episode with his younger brother, Souichi is traumatized and really annoyed at gay community in general. Souichi hates to admit, but he does care for Morinaga.

The thing is that Morinaga doesn’t seem to be good at measuring affection.

The Analysis
Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)

At first, I didn’t thought I’d like The Tyrant Falls In Love, but oh boy, I was so wrong! So deliciously wrong... Sigh. Anyway, haha! I usually don’t like gay characters that hide behind homophobia. They can hide all they want, it’s a right of all of us, but homophobia? Really?

And, to my utter astonishment, I fell deeply in love with the series. The more you read, the more you like it, haha! I started giving it 4 stars per volume, but now I think that it is a five stars yaoi manga series as a whole <3 It is still being published in Japan and this review contemplates it until volume 9!

The narrative pace is annoyingly slow, mostly in Morigana’s point of view. When they have already stablished some sort of relationship, we start to get glimpses at Souichi’s mind as well. I like switching POVs, so I’m happy, haha!

The plot is very simple: boy falls in love with hetero co-worker and decides to conquer him. And gets punched a lot in the face for trying. Several times.

But simple plots are not a bad thing. Poorly executed plots are a bad thing and it’s not the case at all! Takanaga-sensei, once again, was brilliant in conducting the story and leaving her reader in a constant need for more, a.k.a. hooked up into her work :) And, for having a slow pace, the story has many details, something that I utterly love! The most amazing part? We can remember it all!

Now, the characters. There are some awesome sidekicks to this story, but they don’t make much of an appearance overall. So, I’ll focus on our Lucky couple, kay? :)

Morinaga is a completely lost case. He is very insensible when it comes to other people’s feelings, even not meaning to, and it’s a paranoid sort of fellow. He is handsome and cute and the top of the relationship – btw, I love cute tops and powerful bottoms, haha! – but he has much to learn yet, even with the series in volume number nine. Of course he already grew a lot and developed beautifully, but that one was just too damaged, haha! Even more than Souichi...

Anyway, let’s go to the crux of the problem: Souichi. He is the dream man on the outside, but has a very awful temper. He is violent, unforgiving and pretty much the tyrant described in the title. Honestly, I don’t know why Morigana fell in love with him in the first place, haha! But after he starts to drop his defenses, we can’t resist him <3 He is so cute!

As the pace is very slow, it takes forever between a sex scene and another and they are not very explicit. If sex it’s what you’re looking for, this title is not for you, haha!

One of the things that I like the most about The Tyrant Falls In Love is that it follows the couple’s routine and shows how the outside happenings can affect their relationship even when both are okay with each other. It’s amazing.

Overall, this is a cute series with an interesting story and loveable characters. If you like yaoi, this is a must-read for you!

That’s it! Thanks for reading :D

To manga 2/10 i dwa punkty dałam wyłącznie dzięki słowom Masakiego "Słyszałeś kiedyś o syndromie sztokholmskim?

After Little Butterfly which was so beautiful, believable and so alive, I would have thought her other stories would be as sensible, well put, alive and real. But not in this case, and unfortunately not in quite a few of her other works cases either. I can not relate to how people find this as good as they seem to find it. It has potential, but that potential is not taken care of. It would have been interesting if the plot with Masaki would have been further extended, and if the main characters' relationship would have been better and more interestingly developed. It seems such a waste, because the characters could be really beautiful, alive and interesting with a bit more thought, originality and care behind it.

The first half of this volume isn't even worth reading. I'm really sick of r*pe being such a big part of yaoi and BL. Most of the series is good but it's difficult to enjoy this series, support it, or read most manga nowadays especially LGBT ones when the writers has a fetishization for sexual abuse and makes a mockery of it. Wtf? This is a big issue with Japanese stories and it really pisses me off. The fact that fujoshi and fundashi read this story and defend THIS aspect of the story makes me sick to my stomach. The story started off very cute till the writer had the second lead drugged and supposedly r*ped, but somehow it's fine because he's secretly gay? Please! ಠ_ʖಠ We need actual romance not abusive relationships, thank you.

This book was torn for me. On one hand it's pretty funny and has great artwork, the story is pretty interesting in parts. But, like most, I was thrown off by a few scenes and it made it hard to truly sympathize with the character. Here is what I ultimately have to say: bear through it. The first book of this series is hard to love but if you can get through it and think there might be something great buried under it like I did, you probably will love the rest of it. It's a little slow in some places and alittle fast in others, but the series has an interesting story with plenty of comedy and yaoi to hold you over for intense moments.

Honestly I wanted to give this a higher rating. I like the characterization, the art style and I think the plot, though a bit contrived and easy to guess, is rather interesting and kept me reading.
However, this falls under the ever expanding trope of 'straight man only allows molestation because it is this specific person and THEY'RE DEFINITELY NOT GAY'.
The political landscape/LGBTQ+ visibility at the time of publish possibly could have explained this choice, however seeing as both leading homosexual couples within the story require coercion it can be off putting to read.

I really can't recommend this story just because the non-con is so prominent. Seriously, then it becomes emotional blackmail and that's basically the entire story in a nutshell. I guess we're supposed to feel less disgusted about the circumstances because the one being raped is a homophobic person (likely in denial about his own feelings) and obviously has some conflicted (possibly romantic) feelings for his attacker, but that's somehow better? I dunno. I don't like it and I don't like what it implies. If you have triggers about sexual/emotional abuse DO NOT read this.

not entry-level Takanaga, since the entire thing is predicated on no means yes - somewhere - buried deep down, and there's rather more, er, fluid than readers who associate her with things like Challengers might anticipate. but if your moral sensibilities are as blunted as mine, then it's a terrifically fun, frothy read, with one of the best nasty-tempered ukes in the business.

This is AWFUL. The art is bad, but the story is worse. Emotional abuse, physical abuse, rape--and this is supposed to be a "romance." Sorry to say, if your idea of romance is blackmailing someone into having sex with you, YOU NEED HELP. BADLY.

While trope-y and full of morally and legally dubious actions done by the main character, I cannot deny this series holds a special place in my heart.
