Rate this book

The Oz books form a book series that begins with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and relate the fictional history of the Land of Oz. Oz was created by author L. Frank Baum, who went on to create the illusion that characters such as Dorothy and Princess Ozma relayed their adventures in Oz to Baum themselves, by means of wireless telegraph.

This ebook presents all the Wizard of Oz novels written by Lyman Frank Baum. Later Wizard of Oz books written by Ruth Plumly Thompson and other authors, as well as comic strips, are not included in this collection.

Lyman Frank Baum was an American author best known for his children's fantasy books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, part of a series. In addition to the 14 Oz books, Baum penned 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema.
Born and raised in Chittenango, New York, Baum moved west after an unsuccessful stint as a theater producer and playwright. He and his wife opened a store in South Dakota and he edited and published a newspaper. They then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and published children's literature, coming out with the first Oz book in 1900. While continuing his writing, among his final projects he sought to establish a film studio focused on children's films in Los Angeles, California.
His works anticipated such later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work).

The goal - to read the entire series.
The result - stopping after 5 books in.

Overall, this is the same story told over and over again. It never gets better though.

Unsurprisingly, my first experience with this series was the iconic 1939 film, in which the Wicked Witch absolutely terrified child me. I was also aware of the much darker Return to Oz that came out decades later, but I have yet to watch it personally, although I do know that much of it is based on a handful of the earliest books.

So, this collection contains not 1 but all 14 of the books that Baum wrote! Including a small selection of short stories he wrote over the years. Personally I think the first 5 are the strongest, as the books lose any tension as they went on, I understand that these were geared towards children, yet despite both Wicked Witches being killed in the very first book, future installments establish that no one in Oz can die, not even from old age.

Now this particular fact opens up a LOT of questions and plotholes for the rest of the series. If no one can die, where on earth did Ozma's parents go? Why were both witches able to be killed yet Glinda and Ozma are nigh on invincible? The plot armour is quite strong.

However, given that Baum initially planned to do just a few Oz books, and even wrote in an ending in which Glinda seals Oz off from the rest of the world, I did some research and found that his fans begged so much for more stories that he had no choice but to come back to it.
I admire that he even managed to wrap his return into the story itself, that being Dorothy was able to set up a wireless telegram between herself and Baum, who stylised himself as the official historian of Oz, hence why he was able to continue reporting on the adventures that took place there, even after being sealed off from the world.

I'm glad that Baum ended up moving away from having Dorothy be the main character, as it allowed him to introduce brand new characters and unknown areas of Oz for us to experience, it truly felt like Oz was so enormous and packed with such variety that even its inhabitants did not know everything about it.

Overall, reading these book after book can be a bit of a slog, especially with how all the books always end with the heroes being saved and the villains being reformed or chased off. So this is a project I would recommend spreading out over months, unless you really get into it.

4/5 Stars (%78/100)

I have two editions of The Complete Wizard of Oz but I liked this one more mainly because it is unabridged. I also got it for free but I don't know if it still is (it can't be that expensive though). I knew about Oz as a child and read probably all of the novels. However, I didn't remember most of the things and decided to read them as an adult. Surprisingly, it was still fun and I really enjoyed this loooong journey. All 14 novels are included in this collection and it is very long (2100+ pages) so be ready to embark on a long journey. Definitely recommended!
