He was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered, along with St Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He's also known for his writings. Both his poetry & his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature & a peak of all Spanish literature. He was canonized as a saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He is one of the 33 Doctors of the Church. (less)

The original poem known as The Spiritual Canticle was composed by St. John while he was imprisoned in Toledo (Dec 1577-Aug 1578). The redaction, his explanation of the deeply mystical love poem about the soul and Christ, the Bridegroom, was written after his escape at the request of the Carmelite nuns. They wanted to understand the correct interpretation of the doctrinal meaning behind the poem’s symbolism and imagery.
The poem consists of 40 Stanzas and can be roughly divided into three parts, although there is no strict time sequence nor well-defined progression from one stage to another:
Stanzas 1-12: The beginning of the spiritual journey – the longings of impatient love.
Stanzas 13-21: The spiritual engagement – preparing for union.
Stanzas 22-40: Perfect union; Spiritual marriage – longing for the Beatific Vision.
The first two parts were tough, I searched for ideas, examples, experiences I could positively identify and was familiar enough with to relate to what St. John was writing about. Sometimes I was successful, other times, I did not know enough to know if we meant the same things. In the last part, in some ways it was easier, because it was entirely theoretical–for me. I had nothing to relate it to and just enjoyed his beautiful metaphors. The entire poem is a series of metaphors. Itmight would be a useful to sit down and list them.
Perhaps some might be able to read this and glean what is here on a first read. As for me, I know I will need to reread it,probably several times. In the meantime, however, I have some books about St. John and The Spiritual Canticle which I hope will help me grow in appreciation of this wonderful spiritual classic before I return to it again. The Prayers of John of the Cross has already opened up the poem for me by showing me how to pray this this work, something I did not attempt as I was reading it.
June 12, 2018: At mass yesterday, in a very short homily Father said something completely unrelated to St. John, which yet spoke to me about why I am able to understand this work clearly sometimes and struggle with so much the rest of the time. He said that there are somethings, supernatural abilities, such as what Christ calls us to in the Beatitudes, which we cannot do on our own. Indeed, who can be truly Poor in Spirit, Merciful, Meek, a Peacemaker, etc., without Divine Assistance? We might say a Mother Teresa. But she would probably disagree and say that it was God working through her. Indeed none of us can live up to these standards without the intervention, the surrender to the Holy Spirit. Some have been Gifted more in one than another, so it seems as if they are doing it on their own, but they are just using the Gifts God has given them. The rest must ask for those Gifts, remain open to receiving them and allow God to work through them.
As for this book, many seemingly have little or no trouble understanding St. John, but I am not one of those fortunate souls. And yet, he is not beyond me if I ask for God's help and then surrender to the Grace of the Holy Spirit, because there have been times before the Blessed Sacrament—when he has been crystal clear for me. Then I sit down again and it is like trying to read in the dark or through a veil. I need much Grace to read this saint.
May 29, 2018: Almost two months into reading this and have had time to read some, reflect, read some more, pray, read, read what others say about this book-poem, etc., and, for me at least, St. John, is a wonderful teacher/author who creates feelings of great happiness and great smallness (Is that an oxymoron?) in me at the same time. I am thoroughly overwhelmed and in over-my-head no doubt. How dare I call myself a Carmelite?! I know why St. Thérèse was forced to come up with her Little Way, why she went looking for the elevator. St. John is intimidating. But I forge on...

El mundo es un desastre. Sólo puede haberlo hecho el azar, una entidad incompetente o malvada.
En la ciudad –una costra de asfalto inmensa– todo es apestoso, el campo es un lugar sucio. Los bichos muerden, la hierba apesta, el Sol te hace sudar, y cuando hace frío, igualmente sufres.
Las personas nos vemos obligadas a trabajar, y cuando no estamos demasiado estresados, nos dedicamos a minarnos pensando en lo ridículo de nuestra condición, que además es finita, y podemos estar de acuerdo con que ya no existe esa esperanza antigua en un más allá.
Quiero decir con esto que no creo que exista un Dios como el cristiano.
Una tarde aburrida en casa de tus padres encuentras un libro. Quizá una edición cutre. Quizá no es ahí donde lo encuentras sino entre la sección de poesía en una librería de segunda mano. “San Juan de la Cruz” y te imaginas a un frailecillo de pene flácido y moralista. No es muy atractivo mi prejuicio. Comienzas a leer el tomo de 400 páginas, y sólo hay poesía en 40 de ellas. El libro vale 2€. Lo compras. Lees esa noche la poesía y cuando preguntas por Dios, responden las criaturas:
“Mil gracias derramando
pasó por estos sotos con presura,
y, yéndolos mirando,
con toda su figura
vestidos los dejó de su hermosura”.
Entonces Dios comienza a existir.
Lo ves ahí fuera en los bosques, en las risas de los niños y en los cuerpos amados.
Sólo creo en Dios leyendo a San Juan.
Y cuando no lo leo, soy ateo, pero Juan es santo.
San Juan nos hace sentir ese amor joven, como el que imanta a cuerpo y otro cuerpo. El goce de los sentidos que, muy bien argumenta, procede de un Amado. En mayúsculas. Si eres capaz de decírmelo con tal belleza, yo lo tengo que creer.
Los hispanoablantes hemos sido bendecidos con el milagro de poder leer esta obra tal y como ha sido inspirada por ese Dios que solo a veces existe.
Una apología de ese goce que hace que nos olvidemos de tantas espinas, ciénagas y problemas.
Existen las flores pero el abono no apesta. Las abejas dan miel y no pican.
Siéntate un momento, abre las poesías de San Juan de la Cruz, bebe el mosto de las viñas creadas por la mano del Amado.
«En la interior bodega
de mi Amado bebí y, cuando salía
por toda aquesta vega,
ya cosa no sabía,
y el ganado perdí que antes seguía.
Allí me dio su pecho,
allí me enseñó ciencia muy sabrosa,
y yo le di de hecho
a mí sin dejar cosa;
allí le prometí de ser su esposa.»
Cierro el libro y me levanto. Quedan platos por fregar y tengo ocho trabajos que entregar para el día 24.
Rápido. En unos minutos Dios dejará de existir.

Great spiritual read. As far as Carmelite spirituality goes, I’m most drawn to St. John of the Cross’ writings. This text in particular is so beautifully written and “wooes”’ the soul into desiring deeper intimacy with the Lord.

Beautiful work describing the relationship of God and the soul. Praying with the poem itself is great. If you like this, spend some serious time with Song of Songs

No tengo palabras para definir cuán increíble me ha parecido esta obra y este poeta. Los versos son espléndidos y de una pureza admirable. En Cántico Espiritual podemos notar la enorme influencia que el Cantar de los cantares ejerció sobre el poeta, pues emplea imágenes similares pero no por ello menos hermosas y originales. Un poeta que supo transmitir a la perfección -siendo ello extremadamente complicado- su profunda relación con El Amado -Dios- siendo él la Amada -su alma-. Me ha dejado sin palabras, le doy infinitas estrellas de calificación.

November 17, 2023La primera vez que me lo leí lo valoré bastante bien. Me explico, fue en una asignatura que no me terminaba de convencer, así que es raro que le diera tres estrellas. O era muy buena persona o me gustó más de lo que lo recordaba. No sé, mi cabeza funciona como le da la gana.
No, no voy a mantener las tres estrellas. No me llena nada, al menos no ahora mismo con el resfriado que tengo encima, así que son dos porque soy buena persona.
¿Una curiosidad? Según GR leí el libro en marzo de 2016 y tardé tres días. ¿Cómo miércoles tardé tres días en un libro que se lee en menos de una hora? Inaudito.

One of the most beautiful books I've ever read. St. John of the Cross chased me down and taught me about the love of his Jesus. This poem and its explanation (along with the Scriptures and little Therese's autobiography) have been God's tools to revolutionize the way my heart sees and loves over these past months... L'ànima, "llama de amor viva" quan es transforma en Déu. Aquest llibre explica aquesta transformació a través de la bellesa i el secret de les paraules (amb el seu transfons jueu) per donar a entendre el significat infinit del poema de Sant Joan de la Creu i el seu paral·lelisme amb el Càntic dels Càntics: La noche oscura del alma y la noche oscura del espíritu per arribar a l'èxtasi.
"El alma está tan adentro entrada en el recogimiento que ninguna (de las cosas criadas) la alcanza, a moverla a gusto con su suavidad, ni a disgusto y molestia con su miseria y bajeza" (pàg 335).
"El alma está en la noche serena, con llama que consume y no da pena" (pàg. 325).
"El Amado es la lumbre de los ojos del alma, y Dios viene a ella a ponerle hermosa como el mismo fuego" Pàg 328.

El autor ofrece un tipo de unión amorosa entre el alma y Dios que va cambiando conforme el poema avanza, la búsqueda del esposo, el encuentro y finalmente la unión. El alma no puede encontrar al esposo al inicio puesto que los busca motivada por un amor eros, sin embargo este se transforma y es capaz de verlo y amarlo según el ágape.
Es un poema tierno en esencia, lleno de alegorías y de tipo renacentista. Al igual que Cervantes a San Juan le hizo falta estar cautivo para crear la mejor de sus obras xdxd

Un poema, una oración. Cuánta belleza en sus versos y profundidad en sus explicaciones. Me hizo sentirme enamorado de Dios a la vez que alejado de ese amor imperfectamente puro.
