It was the weekend before Christmas and the whole world was on countdown. Except for me. Last Christmas, I met a boy. Last Christmas, we made a pact. Christmas would never be the same. Life would never be the same...
Please note that this is a short story, not a full length novel. It is a standalone and is intended to be a quick, fun and flirty read.
Karli Perrin is an English Language and Linguistics graduate from Manchester, England. She has always been a big lover of books (and pizza) and was inspired to write her debut novel back in 2013. She is a huge believer of fate and is a sucker for a happy ending. Her ultimate goal in life is to live in a house made entirely out of books with her husband and four kids. ...Velaris is plan B.
Fun, flirty and festive - The Gift by Karli Perrin is the perfect thing to put you in the mood *wink wink* this Christmas. With only 50 pages, this short story can easily be devoured in one sitting and will leave you filled with warm and fuzzy Christmas cheer.
I honestly LOVED everything about this fabulous little story. From the characters Blake and Imogen (Blake is MAJOR book boyfriend material), to the laugh-out-loud, witty dialogue that I've come to know and adore from Karli Perrin, and the super-cute OMG-I-wish-that-was-me moments.
And just because this is a short story, don't think for one minute that there aren't any surprises in there because at one point I was gripping on to my kindle with my heart feeling like it was about to beat out of my chest with the drama.
But fear not, there are far more swooning moments to help you recover and if you're like me, you will be praying that Karli decides to turn this into a full length novel because it was so addicting!
Honestly, this is the absolute perfect little Christmas story to enjoy on these cold wintery nights, while snuggled up in front of the fire with a hot chocolate. Without a doubt, I will be reading this again before Christmas day rolls around. Treat yourself to an early present and give your one-click finger a work out by buying The Gift by Karli Perrin this Christmas.
A great short story, perfect for Christmas period! Loved the dialogues between them, they were quite funny and sweet. Maybe a little corny at times, but it was really good. It makes you want to wish this was a full novel instead of a novella :)
The Gift by Karli Perrin had me smiling throughout this short read! A happy and delightful Holiday quickie that ended far too soon, or was that what made it such a perfect light read? Two strangers, Santa's lap, and the magic of Christmas all come together for Blake and Imogen!
Karli Perrin took some major "dream boyfriend" material and a cute and sassy spark of "awesome girlfriend" material, swirled it in the magic of Christmas and made me smile in short order! I wanted a light escape, I got it, felt so good when I finished that I read it again!
Face it, sometimes you just need a few internal feel-good smiles, with "people" who make those smiles brighter, because they took a chance on love!

This was a cute easy free read. This light hearted Christmas story was very enjoyable. If your looking for a quick easy holiday story...This is a good one.
Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa finally met in an igloo while the elves went about themselves. Little did they know that this was going to be the start of a heavily-coded conversations and dates in libraries and hot dog stands.
Imogen and Blake are two cute characters you’d want to meet. I love their interactions with each other, it wasn’t rushed but it wasn’t slow either. I liked that they didn’t kiss until the end, that seldom happens in books anymore. I liked that this story can be read within minutes and left a lasting impression on me. And what really impressed me the most, the lesson in the end about life and the value of living in it.
Karli Perrin’s short stories are adorable, a little naughty on the side and a whole lotta nice and everything spice. I enjoyed The Book Boyfriend, and this – The Gift, and I want more! I need to read her other book The Honey Trap which had some of my friends raving. If a short story like The Gift had me grinning like a Cheshire, how much more when I get to read her longer novels? I can’t wait!
The Gift is a Christmas Shorty that might be short on word count but it makes up for it with its super sweet, warm and funny content.
My Recap :
Last Christmas Imogen met a boy and made a pact. Now she is thinking back to what exactly happened. Or maybe we should say who happened.
First Line of The Gift :
“My jaw dropped when Hannah revealed our fancy dress costumes.”
My Thoughts on The Gift :
Some novellas just don’t work, they are so short that they make no impression whatsoever on me. Not so this one, as short as it, the characters make their presence felt. Imogen felt like someone you could have good fun with and I loved that finding a man was way down on her list of priorities. From page one I was laughing and that pretty much set the tone for the book for me.
Until we met Blake and then I was still laughing but between the laughs, I was reading with my tongue hanging out! He just sounds perfect. I loved his sense of humour and together they were flirty and dirty; with their conversations full of innuendo that just cracked me up.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this book is that nothing was described graphically. Instead we have a huge build up of chemistry, the characters just connected from the moment they met. Their first non-date was entertaining and full of those butterflies-in-the-stomach moments. Not in a silly insta-love kind of way but in a romantic, full of possibilities kind of way. It was so romantic but with plenty of sexual tension and most of all plenty of snappy comebacks to stop it getting sugary sweet.
Overall this was sweet and smexy and there is ice skating! The ice skating scene alone won it for me! Well that and witty dialogue. Oh hang on I have another highlight....so what won it was the ice skating, the witty dialogue and Blake! And not necessarily in that order :O
Who should read The Gift?
Anyone who is looking for a romantic Christmassy NA book that is full of fun should set their eye on this one. As long as you are ok with novellas, then I’d highly recommend The Gift to you.
Van a amarlo.
What a fab little story and perfect to get you in the Christmas spirit. I loved the chemistry between the main characters, it was a unique story. Yes, I really enjoyed it!! I'm learning quickly that this author does write wonderful books.
For anyone wanting a little Christmas story, you can’t beat this one...I loved it and again Karli has made a fun loving romance...I loved the chemistry between these characters and the banter and laughs they had. It had excitement in there story....
I loved how these 2 had a instant connection and you could feel the emotions between them while reading the story.
Definitely a 5 ⭐️ read and suck a lovely little story.
I absolutely adored The Gift. It was a lovely, flirty, cheeky short story made perfectly for the festive season. The author, Karli Perrin , has her own "gift" for creating fantastic characters and creating a sizzling chemistry and atmosphere between them. This can be seen clearly in Karli's first novel April Fools where we meet April Adams, Isaac Sharpe and Lukas Roberts. If you haven't already, you should definitely have a read and meet the characters yourself, you'll love them, I promise!
Anyway, on to The Gift!
The cover for The Gift is absolutely beautiful, don't you think? It's to die for. It's romantic, it's Christmassy and it's adorable, and it catches your eye without a doubt. Everything that a cover should have, this cover has it. It's one of those images that most females would love to actually be inside of. Truly magical!
The characters you get to meet first in The Gift are Imogen (main female character) and Hannah (her best friend). These two are hilarious, and remind me so much of me and my own girlies. The dialogue between them is spot on, completely genuine and couldn't be more down to earth. I love when an author "keeps it real", it makes it so much easier for you to REALLY relate to the characters. They swear, they call each other names...
"Stop being a pussy and go and get changed, we're leaving in half an hour". (Hannah to Imogen)
and a lot of playful banter goes on between them too, which makes it a very entertaining read! Imogen has a fantastic sense of humor, which very much matches my own. She's also quite sarcastic when she wants to be, and I love a girl who speaks fluent sarcasm. She's a university student and she's awesome. Another thing we have in common (as well as a million other females out there in the big wide world) is that she's hoping to find her "Mr Right", who just happens to be, "tall, dark and handsome". Does he sound familiar girls? ;) And THIS is where Blake Anderson comes into it. Hold on to your knickers ladies.
We first meet Blake at a party that Hannah and Imogen go to, both dressed as slutty Mrs Santa Claus. Blake is dressed in a Santa outfit, so clearly, in Blake's mind, himself and Imogen are husband and wife. What ensues upon their first meeting is a naughty game of "pretend", and it's incredibly flirty and fun.
"How can you act all innocent after all of the mind blowing sex that we had last night?" (Blake to Imogen)
Blake is absolutely gooooorgeous. Chocolate brown eyes, olive skin and thighs described as being rock solid. I think we can safely stack Mr Blake Anderson on the shelf of "things that make you go mmmmmm". I really enjoyed this guy's character, his twinkling, mischievous eyes and his dirty mind. He's an absolute tease, and I think he'll be making his way up the "Book Boyfriends List" once you have met him.
The Gift has everything a short, festive story could need. There's romance, flirting, sexual chemistry, but that's not all. There's drama, Christmas tree shopping, hot dog eating and girly banter. It's perfection in a tiny little story, and Karli Perrin deserves nothing but constant recommendation for her work, as it caters to every chick-lit and romance lover's needs!
That was what I was saying at the end of this story.
But I just got to say that I absolutely loved this. LOVED IT!!!
From the very beginning I was hooked and from the very first meeting I couldn't stop smiling. For reals.
This story was so romantic it was like, I don't know, a miracle, a dream come true, something out of a book! Mind blowing, for me anyways. And Love at first sight! And I wanted this to happen to me!!!! I am single so I can dream can't I.
I was all smiles and giddy joy of happiness. I loved it from the front to the back of the book.
But there were also uncertainties at the back of my mind. It came off as a heartfelt story when I first read the blurb but it wasn't. Nope.
I couldn't believe it by the time I was waiting for something grand or huge to happen, it left me hanging bared, giddy, and nowhere to put it all. That, was where my frustration came in.
"Why Karli, WHY??!!!" *weeps*
You made me all happy and then ripped it right out of my heart. You made me build my anticipation up for nothing. I am saddened. *sighs* It wasn't a sad story, trust me. I was happy throughout the whole reading process.
I'm not sure if my disappointment is valid because this was such a short, and I mean a very short but super fantastic read. I thought it would be longer. I should have listened to the advice you, Karli pointed out but I thought it wasn't going to be that way exactly. More the bummer for me.
I love you Karli and your writing is exactly how I love it, but you just toyed with my heart. You are such a tease!
I might sound angry, which I am not yet it might sound like it, because I just wanted more. Like a lot more. I wanted some heartbreak, some pain, some retribution and revelations, lost and found, forgiveness. Like pretty much everything that makes a romance novel. Yes, I know this is a novella but still, I wanted all that in this short space of time.
But I couldn't have it that way. I guess I was anticipating too much after April Showers? It did leave me hanging too right? I should have known better. That or I am just a crazy romance drama queen who has no-one to love but her books? Hmmm.....
Either way, I still absolutely love this novella and would highly recommend it for a super short quickie romance HEA. Must I say beware though?
I will have to dive back into this story with less assumptions to really enjoy this book the next time.
P.S. I absolutely LOVE the hero. I want him! Oh gosh you don't know how much I want him! I don't think I have ever felt this way before. Lies I know, but it has been awhile and he is most definitely the one. Swoon~ Oh gosh I am going crazy over a fictional hero. Thank you Karli, thank you. I am saying that sarcasticly. LOL But oh, I so love him! He's so dreamy and my kind of guy~ You Karli really know how to work a girl's fantasy.

I love the holidays especially Christmas, so around this time of the year I am always looking for a great holiday read. When I was contacted to review this novella by the author I was completely excited!!! I knew going in that it was going to be a novella, so I knew it was short and quick. When a book is this short and quick it is really hard to write a review for it, so I apologize now if this is on the short side.
This book was such a cute a sweet love story with Christmas as the background. It was a very quick read….I finished it in about 45 mins. But I will say that when I was finished I had a huge smile on my face. Being that it is a novella and a shorter read, it is hard to get attached to the characters. Although I did like what we saw of Imogen and Blake. I just wish this book would've been just slightly longer, so we would've gotten some more background on these two characters.
Imogen and Blake were very cute together. I loved their banter and conversations. The way they talked to each other, you would've thought they knew each other for years and not having just met. I enjoyed the storyline of the book and watching them getting to know each other. The author even stuck a little action into the book which completely took me by surprise. It was out of nowhere but still blended with the story well.
I did think the ending was kind of abrupt….I wish we would've gotten just a little more in the end of the book. After reading the first couple of lines in the book it has you wondering what happened and what the "pact" was, well I loved the pact when we find out but I wish the story would've ended by bringing us back to the present time, because the story is told in the past.
Like I said I really did enjoy this novella and I am glad the author contacted me to review it. I would recommend this if you have a short amount of time to read and want something with a holiday theme to it. There isn't any steam but you don't miss it in this story. It is one that I think adding steam would've been out of place. This was definitely one of those feel good love stories, that will have you smiling in the end.
I have had books by Karli Perrin sitting on my kindle for months now. MONTHS. That is not at all acceptable. I wasn’t at all familiar with her writing so I figured I’d start out small. The Gift was the perfect introduction to Karli’s writing style. It’s a short story. When I say short, I mean short. This is not a full length novel. It’s not even a novella. It is a short story. So before you buy it, make sure you’re aware of that fact.
The Gift is told from the POV of Imogen. I fell in love with her before the story even started simply because of her name. I have name envy. Anyway… Last Christmas Imogen attended a Christmas party dressed as a slutty version of Mrs. Clause. Before you judge, be aware that he roommate picked out the costume. A very sexy lingerie version of a beloved old lady. At this party she meets a guy named Blake who is playing the part of Santa. After some witty banter, the two part ways. Through a chance encounter they meet up again and get to know one another. Christmas miracles and all that. At one point, the two find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. They learn a valuable lesson about living for today and not taking things for granted.
His eyes turned softer, “Let’s make a pact to live for the moment. Let’s forget about the past and stop worrying about the future. Let’s live for today.”
If you have an hour free time between wrapping, shopping and decorating this holiday season, I recommend you pick up The Gift. It’s sweet, sexy and snort out loud funny.
And just like that, my morals went down the drain. I joined in with his eye fucking.
Girls, don’t drink and eye fuck.
There were moments when I literally snorted out loud. Nothing makes me happier than two characters engaging in a battle of wits – sarcastic comments and silly chitchat make me smile. That dialog can either make or break a book, and in this case, it definitely made the book for me.
You can be sure that in the coming weeks I will FINALLY get around to reading Karli’s novels that have been neglected on my kindle for entirely too long. I’ve gotten a taste of this author and I can’t help but crave more.
Sometimes a heartwarming story about falling in love is just what you need to fill your heart. The Gift is just the holiday shortie to do that. A love story doesn't always need to be messy, complicated, and full of angst. It can be as simple as two people meeting, flirting, and then wanting to get to know one another.
This is how this story goes with Imogen and Blake. A chance meeting at a party leads them to exchange some particularly witty banter that definitely left me with a big grin on my face. Sure, Imogen was a little intoxicated, but a little flirting never hurt nobody! Add in some sexual innuendos and Perrin had me cracking up watching these two interact.
"Are you asking me a serious question or are we still talking in code? Because I don't want to get excited over nothing."
I found this to be extremely sweet and I found myself jealous of how easily Imogen interacted with Blake. The girl has confidence and spunk and I loved that about her. Blake was also confident, but not to the point where I felt he was being a jerk.
I'm really glad Perrin didn't turn this into an insta-love short story. Instead, it's just about two people who find themselves attracted to one another and want to spend time together. Nothing more, nothing less.
"No. When I kiss you, I want your eyes open. I want to look at you and know that you're feeling what I'm feeling."
My only quirk was the twist towards the end. I personally could have done without it, because I found it to be a bit out of place in the plot. However, it did show us that Imogen certainly has guts and that she will do whatever necessary to protect Blake. That part was rather sweet and foreshadowed that these two will probably turn a flirty, sweet relationship into something more.
Overall, this was a cute, snappy read that I read as I was cuddled up in the recliner waiting on Thanksgiving dinner to be served. It definitely put a little holiday cheer in my cup!
*Received a copy of this from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
This book may be short, but Karli has a way of grasping your attention from the very first page until the perfect ending. It never ceases to amaze me just how easily Karli can make me fall in love with characters! She’s not the type of author to put pointless filler in her books – which I’m SO thankful for. Some authors tend to have me skimming pages, but she always finds a way to keep me interested. This book is no exception to that rule.
Imogen is the type of person that I’m sure would be an instant best friend. She’s smart, sarcastic (even when intoxicated) & a creative writing major, what’s not to like? Then there’s Blake… muscular, tan, brown eyed, witty, majoring in law & has NO douche bag qualities. I also loved the fact that he surprised her aka he actually listened to what she was saying to him! Would you like to swoon now or later? I feel like romantic things automatically become 100x more romantic around Christmas time, so obviously their first date was perfect (see the cover for a hint). Absolutely loved their banter in “code” & Blake’s “palm reading” – future boyfriend take notes, please!
Have I mentioned that Karli also has a habit of adding plot twists that you could never see coming in a million years? After reading this, I know for future reference that I need to brace myself for the emotional distress she causes me. Thankfully, everything is okay, a pact is made & two soul mates have found their way to each other.
If you’re looking for a short story about romance & Christmas time, then this is perfect for you. Regardless of your relationship status, you will wish you had a guy like Blake in your life! Easily something that I look forward to reading a few more times once it starts snowing. So what are you waiting for?! Don’t question it, just buy it. Perfect story to get you excited for the holidays, if you aren't already!
Hello! Blake be real please! Like, right here by my side. It'll be Christmas soon! - OMYGOSH. OMYGOSH! Wow. I don't know what to say. A story has never gotten me this speechless. I was basically going to have a one word review about this, well, basically, Jassie from Clap, Stomp, Jump and I were planning to have a one-word review. It was just supposed to be: SWOON. But I wanted to add CUTE, FUNNY, and FLIRTY. And it was a big UGH. My gosh! I know my heart basically stopped and melted before I finished reading and it left me shocked! And I was really going nuts and everything about me is going insane. I swear this review is not going to be a spoiler-free review but I'll try my best.
Blake. OMYGOSH. Sweet, sweet, Blake. I could totally just swoon over him and his sexiness and gentleness. And that heart stopping moment that I still can't recover. I just died there, believe me. He's so perfect I don't know if Imogene deserves him. But of course, Imogen deserves him. They're so perfect I'd think of them as a perfect real-life couple. I actually had fun reading them.
And there's Imogen. She plays innocent and she's not, at the same time. And I love it! I can't help but compare her to April. They're two different worlds. Two different people and wow I loved Imogen more than April. April is a little stubborn, though. I might've gotten the same expression as Imogen during that incident: breakdown at the last part, and let it all sink in and realize I don't want to lose the guy the I began to love. What I liked about her was her strength. She never let her fear eat her alive. And she's begun to trust Blake. The best part ever.
Such a fun and flirty Friday read and my gosh I'm totally speechless. Not one novella has ever affected me this much.
You know how much I love my twinnie right? So when she told me she was writing a secret project, i wanted to know desperately what it was but she kept quiet. Then one day, so told me and helllllllo The Gift file in my inbox. I had finished worked, read it waiting for my train, then the bus home and just as i was getting to my stop i had finished it.
It’s not very long, but Karli certainly knows how to hone you in, how to give her characters personality and life in a short amount of words and pages. Karli gets straight to the point with Blake and Imogen, she makes them flirty, funny, sarcastic and damn right brilliant characters and along with the christmas setting, you want what they have instantly. They click instantly, they gel and seem to understand the other straight away when they first meet – both playing along with the game in the night club. Their chemistry is instantaneous too, and that is something that was a given with these two.
Karli adds in an extra UMFFPPHHH that i was NOT expecting to happen at all and i was praying at that scene that nothing would happened to my beloved Blake and Imogen. I don’t think i could have handled it but thank the god, Karli seemed to understand my freaking out and everything ends up perfectly ;)
The first date – hence the book cover, is the sweetest, most damn romantic day / night that Blake takes Imogen on. Jeeeeze, where is my Blake and why is he not my boyfriend? I want to be taken on that date and held and make googley eyes at him so much!!
The Gift is the perfect short story for all those who adore christmas and being jealous of couples who have an amazing Christmas whilst you are single and eating copious amounts of chocolate HA.
For my first 'festive' book of the season, I'm extremely happy! This story had all the right elements and a definite Christmas feel to it.
I wasn't sure what to expect when reading this story, the blurb didn't give much away. The Gift is fun and flirty. It's full of witty banter and some serious sizzling chemistry. Imogen meets Blake at a Christmas party, and there's an undeniable attraction to one another. They spend time with one together, inevitably growing closer, only to experience something so life altering they then make a pact with one another.
Maybe it was the alcohol but I was enjoying whatever this was and I didn't want it to stop. There was an electricity in the air and I felt more alive than I had in a long time.
Karli has a way of writing such entertaining interactions between her characters. Blake and Imogen were hilarious. I spend the whole time with a huge smile on my face. The wittiness between them just showcased their attraction to one another. Its not all fun and games, there are plenty of swoony moments too. Blake is practically perfect. Tall, dark, utterly handsome, AND studying Law *Heart Flutters* He's kind and considerate, and a gentleman, what more could a girl ask for?
"Close your eyes for a second" "Is this one of your moves? Are you going to kiss me?" "No. WHEN I kiss you, I want your eyes open. I want to look at you and know that you're feeling what I'm feeling."
I really enjoyed Imogen's character too. She can hold her own against Blake and she knows what she wants. This would of been a 5 Olive read for me, but my greedy self just wanted more. It felt like there was a little more to the story to be told.
Awwww I can't get over how much I loved this book for a short story. Even thought I wanted so much more from the characters,I fully enjoyed it. I'm just been greedy and wanting more from Blake and Imogen ;) They were so loveable! Literally from the first page they were in it,I knew I was done. She is so sarcastic and has an answer for EVERYTHING. BUT she had met her match in Blake as he gives out as much as he takes.
The Gift really and truly is a loving Christmas tale.
Imogen is our main girl who at the start is been dragged out for a xmas drink by her flat mate. With her boyfriend and all his rowdy mates. She'd rather be at home though. Even more so when her mate drags out a sexy Mrs Claus outfit. With sparkly HO,HO,HO knickers to boot!
But off she goes. And in the end after a few drinks ends up having a ball. She's rocking them sparkly pants. And who does Mrs Claus meet on her drunking travels???? Only her other half! Mr Claus,Santy himself :) Well obviously its not the REAl Santa, but one of his many helpers. And this helper is no other then the way to sexy and confident Blake*Swoon*.
This would be where there xmas story begin's...... How one night out can change your life..... Sparks really do fly in this book, and sometimes the perfect gift show's up when you least expect it..... So who knew sparkly red knicker's held such power ;)
The Gift by Karli Perrin really is just that, a gift, a little gem of a read. Perfect for a Saturday afternoon, curled up on the sofa with the dog and a cuppa. Short but totally sweet.
First we meet Imogen:
“I decided that the next guy to get into my pants would be ‘the one’. You might have heard about him – he’s tall, dark and handsome”.
She’s been single for over a year and Hannah, her in your face friend is determined to make her have some fun.
Set around Christmas time, Imogen meets a sexy santa on a night out, and I have to say that from this point on the banter between Blake and Imogen is laugh out loud hysterical. They are unashamedly flirting and it’s so perfectly sweet to read.
The dialogue when they first meet is genius, I really hold my santa hat off to Ms Perrin.
“He was gorgeous and he was cleaning my flat. Could it get much better than that? Well, he could be naked”. Imogen
“Are you coming inside?” Imogen
His eyes turned fiery, “Are you asking me a serious question or are we still talking in code?”Blake
This is a really fun read and makes a refreshing change from all the angst and drama we submerge ourselves in.
Thank you Karli for giving me the opportunity to read The Gift xx
This is Karli's first Christmas story and the cover exudes Christmassyness, but also ties in with the story which I though was quite nice. The blurb really sets you up for the whole story, which is a reflective tale of one year earlier for main character Imogen.
She is getting ready to go out with her friend Hannah, who has offered up a rather saucy Mrs Claus outfit for her to wear. Outside of her comfort zone Imogen gives in and wears the costume. What then unfolds is the beginning of her Santa story.
The story is told in first person, which I really like, and look for in a short story. Another great thing about that here is you get a hit from Imogen's humour and dry wit. I especially liked that her thoughts often conflicted with what she actually said, and you get a front row seat for that.
Imogen meets Blake while he is masquerading as Santa Claus, in an igloo, in a night club. What ensues is really the epitome of the story, full of fun, flirting and double entendres. There is quite a major plot twist which livens up the story and really separates it out from other Christmas shorts.
This is a great Christmas story if you have a couple of hours to yourself in front of a fire with a mug of hot chocolate.
