Eighteen-year-old Therese Mills has second thoughts about marrying Thanatos when she learns no god has ever been faithful to his wife. Before she can move into Hecate's rooms, however, the Underworld is attacked, she and her friends are crushed, the souls are unleashed, and a malevolent goddess threatens to unhinge Mount Olympus.
Hypnos has just made a deal with Hades to have his turn in the Upperworld, but before he can tempt Jen with a kiss, he's called back to rebind the souls and defend the House of Hades, and he unwittingly puts Jen and her family in harm's way.
Eva Pohler is a USA Today bestselling author of over forty novels in multiple genres, including mysteries, thrillers, and young adult paranormal romance based. Her books have been described as "addictive" and "sure to thrill"--Kirkus Reviews.
This novel is simultaneously mythologically accurate and an extremely entertaining story. Pohler combines mystery with suspense with mythology and romance to create a captivating and well-rounded whole with some shocking twists. As an author Pohler engages her readers both emotionally and intellectually. She had me on the edge of my seat biting my nails, curled in a ball with a broken heart, and laughing like a little kid. Her smooth, flowing writing style draws you into the story and keeps you following her characters throughout. Not only is this novel well written but Pohler’s descriptions flow from one another very smoothly and paint a picture that takes you all over the world with her characters. Her show-not-tell descriptions draw you into the scenes and don’t let you go. I also appreciate that this is a well-rounded story with a beginning, middle, and end even though it is part of a series. It follows well in the series and leaves an opening for a sequel but doesn’t have you feeling confused at the beginning or leave you hanging at the end.
Pohler also mixes modernity with antiquity throughout relationships and the novel as a whole to create a seamless work that you won’t want to put down. Not only does she portray the Greek Pantheon with her own twist, but she keeps to the major facts and doesn’t completely reinvent an entire culture and religious base. I love how she takes the relationship between Hades and Persephone and gives it a bit of a shake, taking a very different route from most but ensuring that there is still an explanation for everything that fits in the overarching knowledge about their characters. It’s also really nice to see Hades as the ‘good guy’ for once, especially without it throwing preconceived notions of the deity out the window.
I love how Pohler introduces her new characters, especially the divine ones. She works the actual mythology of the characters right into the plot of her story as part of a character’s thoughts or actions. The audience not only learns about the god(dess) in question but also gets to know them as a real person without breaking the flow of the story. Character development also steps it up a notch in this one when Pohler not only develops the personalities of her new characters, but also gives us a much more rounded view of those we’ve already met. This is especially apparent in Hip, who becomes more than simply the fun loving twin, of course, I do also want to throw a pillow at him a time or two for being a total rich guy with a sense of entitlement and no clue about girls. It’s entertaining to watch him grow as a person, regardless of his age. I appreciate that she develops all relevant aspects of a character, but that you don’t ever feel like you’ve read a complete psych profile on them. You get to know everyone in a manner befitting a friend or acquaintance rather than the subject of an inquiry. Above all, Pohler’s characters are the type of people that you want to know and love and are developed in such a way that you feel like you’ve known them forever.
As a whole this novel is both an educated piece of fiction and a fun, suspenseful romp through the lives of the characters that we’ve come to know and love throughout the series, as well as the new ones that we meet in this instalment. As much as I love this series as a whole, this may be my favourite yet. Pohler combines suspense with a love story or two and a culture worth of mythology to create a work of art.
Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book focuses more on the story of Hyp and Jen. Things really start getting interesting as the gods fight with each other and nobody knows who is against who. There are still plenty of things from Kira's point of view. I think this book is the beginning of some very exciting things in the lives of gods and the mortals they are involved with.
The 4th book in this installment is just as explosive as the others. There is so much going on that I literally was on the edge of my seat listening to the audiobook. I may have nightmares after seeing Therese’s bff family endures in this book. These gods are never happy and this book is a prime example. Which God will win the fight? Pick up the book to find out who will rule the house. Ohh and don’t forget in all of this whirlwind Hyp and Jen ❤️
This installment had the same the narrator. I’ve come to enjoy her telling the story. It was enjoyable listening to her.
As I’ve come to expect with Eva’s books, ‘The Gatekeeper’s House’ blew me away. We return to Therese and Than’s story right where the last book left off, but it takes absolutely no time at all for the action to kick in. From that moment on, it is impossible to think about stopping- once you’re in, there’s no way you can escape this amazing story that Eva has created.
Throughout the last three books, we’ve seen the main character, the lovely Therese Mills, grow and develop as a character. This book is no different as Therese continues to adapt into her new life, as her loving nature and her incredible strength continues to shine through, more importantly, you get to see Therese’s worries and flaws as well. And while we aren’t all goddess, I think Eva still manages to write a character that you can really connect to. Despite her new powers, she is ultimately still a teenage girl trying to find out where she belongs.
Without a doubt, my favourite part of the fourth book was Hip. The last three books has sort of lacked Hip, and if you’ve read any of Chami and I’s previous reviews you’d know that we adore Hip more than anything else. But you really get a chance to see the real Hip in this book. While he seems like his usual cocky self for a while, as the story goes on he shows himself as actually a really genuine guy. I really like how he develops- it’s not an instant change, it’s been built up in all the previous books but this one is honestly Hip’s time to shine. If you don’t love him by the end of this book, well I don’t even know what you’re doing!
The plot of this particular one is just insane. Honestly, there are so many twists and turns that you just never see coming. Everything is crafted to perfection. I think we’ve mentioned this in all three of our previous reviews, but Eva is insanely brilliant when it comes to tying everything together. She never misses a single detail, and while other authors may forget things from their previous books, Eva never does. It’s honestly amazing, and I have no idea how she manages to remember all this stuff! And I can’t even begin to describe how much effort Eva puts into these books, not just in her writing but in every single aspect. I don’t think there is a more dedicated author out there.
If I were to suggest only one series ever, I would definitely suggest this one. You will fall in love with all the characters, even those that you hate with a passion. You will fall in love with the extreme attention to detail that Eva pays to everything in this series. I think you’ll just plain fall in love with this entire series. It is just, honestly, amazing.
I’d like to thank Eva for sending us her books to review and for making our reading experience so wonderful. There aren’t nearly enough words to describe how thankful we are.
Somehow Eva still astounds and amazes me! You would think, 4th book in you'd be able to guess what's coming, but you never do even when you think you do.....you're wrong! :-) I love Eva's writing style and the way she captivates the reader, her stories and characters draw you in and keep you hooked. I'm not sure you could ask for more than that from any book. Eva you continue to amaze me, your stories, plots and characters are solid and easy to fall in love with and keep wanting MORE!! I will give a more in depth review after y'all get a chance to read, just let me say your going to love it, and things/people aren't always what they seem! ;)
I received this book in exchange for a honest review! WOW!!! Loved it I think this was the best book by far! There was constantly something happening, it kept you wondering what was going to happen throughout the entire book! I'm happy to say that some of my predictions came true! ;) I want so badly to tell you everything about this book, but I will not! You need to read it! I read it in one sitting, it will keep your attention and you will be longing for more! I'm just upset I have to wait for book 5! :( FABULOUS WRITING EVA!
This being the next in the series I latched on to it and now have finished the book. It continues to take the twist and turns in the main characters lives. A good read. My thanks to the author.
If you have not read any of these books. I swear you are definitely missing out. This novel is the fourth addition to the Gatekeepers Saga and in my opinion it is just as good as the authors other three novels prior to this one. We are again faced with one of my favorite type of books mythology and as I read through I can see that the author has put tremendous time in making sure that her readers are wrapped within the story, I know I was from the beginning of this. She brings to you a complete package that kept me entertained and has became one of my favorite series. When I say complete package she had me with twists all the way through the book that also included suspense, mystery, and a bit of romance. All along she has a great balance of keeping the true mythology along with her own personal twist.
You can tell that the author loves her work by the way her novels flow with passion and the emotion that she brings to her readers. In my opinion, the Gatekeeper’s House plot had an easy flow that is easy to read for all age’s young adult and adult. The descriptions in this novel are just enough to make you keep wanting to read on but not overly done to make you lose interest and your able to understand what she wants you to in your mind, I would say just enough. All of the characters that she brings to you in this novel, she explains it to where you fully know them as in your living right next to them within the novel she has created.
There was not a part of this book that I did not like. I loved the Gatekeepers House as much as the other novels she has written and look forward to what she has in store for us in the future. And highly recommend this!
I received an ecopy in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, even though this is the fourth book in the series, I’m going to attempt to keep this spoiler free just in case there are a few of you that want to check out if this book is good (WHICH IT IS UNDENIABLY) before you read it (WHICH YOU SHOULD ALSO UNDENIABLY).
*Slow clap* Eva Pohler, you have done it again
Can I just start of by praising Eva Pohler, the author, for being able to not forget anything for her previous books in the making of this book and the series. You have to be amazingly talented and truly dedicated to keep that up. I’ve read so many books in which the author forgets a character in the room or forgets a detail that is quite important to the quest of the main character, but here we are, not doing any of that. I think this is one of the things I value the most as a reader. Being able to be consistent with the protagonist’s story line. This series really satisfies this.
HIP! If you had read any of the previous books you would know that there was less Hip, but this book sure pulls him in. At first I was not that fond of a relationship that was forming between Hip and another significant other, but over the course of the book I began to like it.
Gatekeeper’s house never lacked in suspense and twists and turns and all that crazy stuff! I felt like I was on a rollercoaster holding on for my life. It was ironically full of life (as they were in the underworld), and it always had be guessing and pining and feeling so much emotion that just UGH. UGH.
If I could say it simply, then: You should read this series. Just do it.
This book starts off with a bang! I mean it really does start off with a bang. The Underworld is under attack. Souls are unleashed back on earth and it's a huge mess trying to return them to where they belong. Gods are forced to pick a side in the stand off between Zeus and Hades. Alliances will be tested. In the midst of the chaos, Therese is questioning if Thanatos will be able to remain faithful to her. If the history of the other gods is an indicator, their future doesn't look good. No other god has been able to remain loyal, so why would Than be any different?
Will the Underworld be taken over? How can all of the lost souls be returned to where they belong? Will Therese and Thanatos be able to find their way back to each other? Find out in this exciting 4th installment of the Gatekeeper's Saga!
This is an edge of your seat thrill ride tale. I loved this book from start to finish. The story building is amazing. You feel like you're truly along for the ride. The characters are awesome, and you really start to root for them to see that they get what they seek. Lots of plot twists and turns to keep you guess. I can't wait for the next one!
I did enjoy this book. Unfortunately, it took me a lot longer to read than expected. I will say overall I am excited to read the next book as I'm very intrigued by this series. I sadly can't help but think that this is dragging on a little in regards to the fact that there is always something going on with therese and than. I keep wanting to get more information about these two children they are going to have, I want to see them get married, and I want to see what they are going to do about the fact that they can't have sex. I did read ahead about what the next book will be about and I'm happy that one of these things will happen, I just hope that it will all work out well as therese and than deserve a nice wedding.
I'm a bit surprised in that Zeus is is willing to do all these nasty things to his own flesh and blood just to get them off of this back. I will have to say that was a twist that I didn't exactly expecr. overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who has started reading this series and not stop it. This series has come in great handy when I'm at trivia as u would not have known any of the answers to the Greek god questions if it wasn't for this.
I couldn't put this down. I finished it in less than 24 hours. All fans if this series will enjoy reading this next installment in Therese and Than's life. The book starts off with Therese who torn because she loves Than but has heard all bad things about gods being faithful to their wives. Someone attacks the underworld and leaves our hero and heroin puzzled as to who wants to harm them now. We get a break from Therese and Than to check on Hip who had gone to the above world to woo Jen and it the readers a fresh perspective on Hip and his character. What I enjoyed about this novel was that we finally get to see how Therese fairs as a goddess. We see her grow and understand her new role while still being herself. I didn't so much enjoy that Jen and Hip's story was in this book. Mainly because I believe their story should have their own book and I wanted to read more about Than and Therese together. I love the ending because it leaves it open to another book, but doesn't necessarily require it. Definitely a must read for Therese and Than fans everywhere
The Gatekeeper's House by Eva Pohler is the 4th book in The Gatekeeper's Saga and a wonderful continuation of the series. In this story, Therese and Than are not married and the wedding is in jeopardy - first because of Therese's fears and then because of discord among the gods. Because of this discord, the souls in the Underworld are released and set out in the world. I love this series and it gets better with every book. Ms. Pohler obviously knows a lot about Greek mythology and she is able to bring the gods to life and seamlessly integrate them into the modern world. The characters are wonderfully well-developed. I love the relationship between Than and Therese. I also love the fact that something is developing between Hip and Jen and I hope to learn more about their relationship in future books. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.
Wow, if you thought the first 3 books in this series where "on the edge of your seat" crazy, then you certainly need to read this book. Book 4 picks up right where book 3 leaves off. During this one, you learn more about Therese and her troubles with Than. You will also get to know a side to Than's father that will kind of shock you. Hip gets his chance in the Upperworld, and has his eyes set on Jen (Threse's best friend). Having to go back and help in the Underworld, Jen and her family are placed in harm's way. Not only that, but you also learn something about Pete. I am dying to get my hands on the next book. I need to know more about Pete, and what will happen between Hip and Jen AND Therese and Than. I love Eva's writing and the way she keeps surprising me with information and problems between all the Gods and humans. Hurry Eva, write book 5!!!
Such a refreshing story with a mythical twist. It's so neat to recall the old myths and dive deeper into the God's psyche as a new spin is put on them.
The Malevolent is out for blood and she's willing to bring down all of the underworld to get it. But more importantly, what would provoke such a grievance against her own father? Or was it really her father that started it all.
Therese and Than's wedding is on hold. Indefinitely. And with souls running amuck on earth Than's job has increased ten fold. Leaving no time for wedding planning. If there actually was any planning.
What sparked Therese's change of heart? And what does her decision mean for the rest of the Gods? Find out if true love really does prevail as battle alliance lines are drawn in the fourth book of the Gate Keepers Saga
Zeus doesn't like oaths being broken but he is the biggest back stabbed among the Gods. I can't believe he had Hips liver ripped out by an Eagle and he rapes the wives of others by assuming their forms. I can say I loathe him. He is despicable. Than better get ready because his bride to be can't seem to not always help even if it means she dies, baby Lynn is doing awesome. And now that Pete is praying to Zeus and Theresea will it cause uncertain doom for them?!? So much going on and what of Demeter?!? An where is Dione now?!?!
Once again I was up half the night reading a book in this exciting series! Eva Pohler makes mythology come alive! The Gatekeeper's House started off with a bang and didn't stop until the last page! I literally couldn't stop reading until I knew what happened! Every book just keeps getting better and better! This is a series that I will be reading more than once or even twice and any age will love it!
This book brought more of the amazing journey you should be used to by now, but brought it to a whole new level. These books just keep getting more exciting, and we keep delving further into the relationships, and personalities of the Gods. Not only is it exciting, but I really feel like this one drove the message home to stand up for what you believe in, no matter what. Your life will not be complete without reading this book!!!
I almost gave up reading this book after the first chapter. I was annoyed by the postponement of the wedding and Therese being insecure with Than. However, by the middle of the book, the qualities Therese has that makes Than and the readers love her are still there even through her few shortcomings. Overall, I did enjoy the book and will be anxiously awaiting book 5.
Ive always been a fan of greek mythology so the new stories with modern stories give me something wonderful read. Im hooked on the series. Eva is really good at capitivating you with her story and have you fall in love with the characters. I now want to move to the underworld thanks Eva. ;) yes i know i cant.
Book 4 picks right up where book 3 left off and the author does such a great job of making the story flow you don't feel like you're on a new book :) There is a great combination of greek mythology, romance, and on the edge of your seat suspense you are going to fall in love with the story, characters and the author! A great read in an already great series!
Another fantastically written work, I love when a book in a series can also be a standalone novel, this author specializes in that, I am not looking forward to reading more only because I don't want to say goodbye to these wonderful characters!!! LOL but I can't stop myself lol I have become addicted to this series!!! I would love to see it at the theater!!!
Again a great book, I won't go into detail because I don't want to ruin it for others but you will really love these books, all of them!!! Keep it up Eva, you have such talent!!!
Well I didn't think I could love than any more then I did, but boy was I proved wrong. This is my favorite book series by far. And I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
