Squall Lines - Selected articles & essays

Rate this book
Tim Dorsey, the creator of the Serge Storms series, has for the first time collected a variety of his newspaper and magazine articles from over the last 30 years. These 25 pieces represent numerous periods of his writing career, starting with early humor columns for his college paper, through freelance pieces during the '80s that showed early sparks of "Serge," including covering a Michael Jackson concert and the New Orleans World's Fair. Then into 90s (with reports on roller hockey and landmark obscenity law), and finally the post-"Florida Roadkill" years, which prompted publications to request first-person accounts of his book tours, research travels and almost anything else they could think of that followed Storms' swath of destruction. More than 100 pages with eight photographs.

Tim Dorsey was born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1, and grew up in a small town about an hour north of Miami called Riviera Beach. He graduated from Auburn University in 1983. While at Auburn, he was editor of the student newspaper, The Plainsman.

From 1983 to 1987, he was a police and courts reporter for The Alabama Journal, the now-defunct evening newspaper in Montgomery. He joined The Tampa Tribune in 1987 as a general assignment reporter. He also worked as a political reporter in the Tribune’s Tallahassee bureau and a copy desk editor. From 1994 to 1999, he was the Tribune’s night metro editor. He left the paper in August 1999 to write full time.

This slim volume contains articles by Tim Dorsey from various publications. Originally only available as an ebook, he had it printed as so many people were asking for a hard copy. It's an excellent collection that spans his career from a budding journalist to the occasional article he'd write after becoming a big name author. It's an interesting progression of his writing style, as well.

That explains a lot

Much like a Serge Storms rant I wasn’t ready for the end. Wish I could give halves or if I can wish I knew how. Good for those wanting a taste of real Florida with a little Auburn, New Orleans and Hollywood thrown in.

I like Dorsey's Florida history from the point of view of lunatic killer Serge Storms, and have read all those books. But this collection - don't bother. He does say in the intro that it is only $3.99 - so if you don't like it maybe you aren't out much LOL.

Some of Tim Dorsey's earliest work. Can see his work changing and developing. Great stuff.

Didn't think I'd like it.

But I did. I was reading with the purpose of falling asleep and it wasn't working. Browsed around the Kindle store to see how long I'd have to wait until Dorsey came out with another book and saw this . Seemed innocuous and kind of boring so I bought it in hopes of achieving a few hours of sleep. I was wrong, this was anything but boring. I usually hate reading the little "let me show you what makes me so cool" semi-bio booklets that must be somehow mandatory for every published writer. This made me like Mr. Dorsey even more a dIdn't think that was possible. It was like peering through a peephole into his head and watching the journey that brought him to his present state of wonderfully crazy great writing. Needless to say I still haven't gone off to dreamland but I can sleep when I'm dead or tomorrow night, whichever comes first.

Just a sampler of Dorsey's writings before (and slightly after) the publication of the Serge series. Interesting tidbits of college life and Florida insights. Short but sweet!
