After fleeing the only refuge she’s known for much of her life, Avery, along with her sister June and new friends, Will, Oliver and Riley forge through the forest to uncharted territory in search of a better life, in search of other survivors. But Avery soon learns that life beyond the woods is far worse than she ever imagined. She finds that safety does not exist for human beings in a world run by Urthmen. Hope seems futile. But Avery refuses to surrender hope and chooses, instead, to push forward and move her group into the heart of danger, to seek out more humans. Will she and the others survive their journey into the savage lands of Planet Urth? Find out in this heart pumping second installment of the Planet Urth series.
Jennifer and Christopher Martucci hoped that their life plan had changed radically in early 2010. To date, the jury is still out. But late one night, in January of 2010, the stay at home mom of three girls (all under the age of six) had just picked up the last doll from the playroom floor and placed it in a bin when her husband startled her by declaring, “We should write a book, together!” Wearied from a day of shuttling the children to and from school, preschool and Daisy Scouts, laundry, cooking and cleaning, Jennifer simply stared blankly at her husband of fifteen years. After all, the idea of writing a book had been an individual dream each of them possessed for much of their young adult lives. Both had written separately in their teens and early twenties, but without much success. They would write a dozen chapters here and there only to find that either the plot would fall apart, or characters would lose their zest, or the story would just fall flat. Christopher had always preferred penning science fiction stories filled with monsters and diabolical villains, while Jennifer had favored venting personal experiences or writing about romance, as romance was far easier to invent fictitiously than it was to attain in real life. Inevitably though, frustration and day to day life had placed writing on the back burner and for several years, each had pursued alternate (paying) careers. But the dream never died. And Christopher suggested that their dream ought to be removed from the back burner for further examination. When he proposed that he and his wife author a book together on that cold January night, Jennifer was hesitant to reject the idea outright. His proposal sparked a discussion, and the discussion lasted deep into the night. By morning, the idea for the Dark Creations series was born.
The Dark Creations series was written while Jennifer and Christopher continued with their day to day activities and raised their young children. They changed diapers, potty trained and went to story time at the local library between chapter outlines and served as room parents while fleshing out individal sections of the book. Life simply continued. And in some ways, their everyday lives were reflected in the characters of the series. In fact, the main female characters are named after three very important people in their lives: their three daughters. Their likenesses end there, however.
As the story line continues to evolve, so too does the Martucci collaboration. Lunches are still packed, noses are still wiped and time remains a rare and precious commodity in their household in upstate New York, but it is the sound of happy chaos that is the true background music of their writing. They hope that their work, though penned for a young adult audience, will be appreciated by the young of every age, and that all enjoy reading it as much as they enjoyed writing it.
The Savage Land is part 2 of the Planet Urth series by Jennifer Martucci. Avery and her sister June have left cave that for many years offered protection from the dangers of the world they live in. Joining with the children (Will, Oliver and Riley) survives of a family killed by Urthmen the five of them set out to find safety far from the dangers of the Urthmen and Lurkers. Avery is convinced there must be other survivors they can join with, other humans where her group can live safely and build a new life. Unfortunately, Avery and her group are about to find that danger can come from the least likely of places and people. The relationship between Avery and her sister June is (as in the last book) quite remarkable and well worth the reading of the story alone. With the addition of Will, Avery is very aware of new feelings that have come over her although she doesn't understand them. New challenges present themselves and Avery and her group rise to the challenges, not always with the desired results. Once again Planet Urth series is shaping up to be a well written series with more than it's share of twist and turns, danger, excitement and quick enjoyable reading.
While this book is considered a young adult fiction, I am sincerely enjoying the story. Each book so far, has great plots that inspire pride in being human and being American. I believe we need reminders in these times about how indomitable the human spirit is and has always been. This book is a wonderful story of fighting against the odds and coming out on top.
The plot grows differently in each book with twists and turns you don't expect. The second book leaves me again, wanting to know more. So, yes, I have purchased the third book in the series.
The characters will make you laugh and fear for them. It is like watching kids grow up, learning as they go. I am really starting to hate the Urthmen. This book engages my emotions and challenges my imagination.
This is a book that I will happily recommend to young and old alike. KUDOS Martuccis on a book well written. Keep writing.
Now that there are more lives at stake, our protagonist has a lot more to deal with and new emotions that, try as she might, she can't keep pushing down. Through all the blood and gore, the dangers that the group goes through and the many, many disagreements, Martucci crafts a wonderful story about humanity and what it really means.
After the first book im surprised that it wasn't what I expected. Will seems gullible and that is something that will get not only him and his siblings killed but Avery and june too. Disappointed with Wills character, I dont know if I will be able to read another. It looks like this too will be a love triangle and I just can't. I'm not into those types of books and with the introduction of the new characters im sure thats where it is going . Also the fight scenes are great.
Cheeks again. The same typo in the first book managed to make its way into the second. Just so we are aware okay is not spelled “oaky.” Will is insufferable he better not be the love interest throughout the whole series bc I can’t stand him. And yes it’s cheeks but I’m determined to read the entire series.
Avery continues on her journey with her added family, they find curiosity really can kill the cat, certainly gets the group in a difficult and deadly situation. They also find more humans, and the group grows.
I must say that this book is much better than the first. Swords, monsters, and wait.... am I reading a dang ol love story? Not really my style, but it's good. Trust me.
Great page turner.. As each encounter and addition a new direction was given. The new family continues to grow and mature quickly as they move forward this uncertain and dangerous world.
I really enjoyed this just as much as the first one. It is very thrilling and the characters are very likable. Detail is really thorough. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Absolutely in love with this series! Every once in a while I find a series that catches me and this one def has. As I'm writing this, I plant to continue reading the third after posting this.
Along with books one and three, I read them in the beginning of this year. I really enjoy this series and the creativity of the plot. I also love that all the books are pretty short reads so the story isn't dragged on for too long like many long books do.
We follow Avery, June, Will, Oliver, and Riley through the deadly forest called the savage lands. Avery never thought she would be stepping into these parts of the forest but a call for a better life for her sister and her new friends leads them through a dangerous journey. They search for a new home that's not in the forest.
Under circumstances (that I don't want to spoil) they meet new friends named Sully and Jericho. Avery sees characteristics of herself in Sully and starts to have feelings for him. He tells her about an underground city were everyone is safe from the Urthmen. Sully knows where this place is and even was born there, but decided to leave (again I don't want to spoil why).
Everyone wants to go to this magical place where you have a bed, a shower, a safe place, except for Avery. She doesn't want to hide away from the Urthmen. She wants to live free in a world were humans rule, and she hopes she can convince everyone else there to do the same.
I wish I could give this a 3.5 rating because that's what it deserves, but the rating system doesn't work that way.
I totally recommend this series to anyone who wants a suspenseful read.
Great continuation of Planet Urth Saga 4 1/2 STARS *****
We continue with Avery's struggle for survival in post-apocalyptic America. She confronts mutant monsters, uses her prodigious skills in battling terrifying enemies and attempts to protect her young sister; June. We learn more about our heroine and how she ended up in this foreboding world and the events that lead to the destruction of the Planet Earth and civilization as we know it. And what of her new companions; Will and his younger siblings, will they stay together, will they survive and can Avery protect them in addition to June? Starting book 3 today. If you love post-apocalyptic sci-fi, this is a must read!!! HAPPY READING!!! Tim
I quite enjoyed the first ‘Planet Urth’ book except for the ‘teenage romance’ that crept into the story when Avery met Will.
I enjoyed the basic story of a group of young people trying to survive against the odds and I still like Avery as ‘kickass’ heroine, but there are several aspects of this book that annoyed me. Some of these I could overlook but I’m afraid I just got so fed up with Avery constantly whining about her feelings for Will. I know this is considered a Young Adult book but it’s more like a ‘Teen Romance’. Then when Sully appeared it got even worse as we now have to contend with jealousy and ‘Teenage Angst’.
It’s a pity the authors didn’t concentrate on the adventure story and allow any romance to develop slowly instead of trying to ‘ram it down my throat’.
I stopped at 60%. I gave it a fair shot, I really did. I don't DNF books very often but ya know... I'm in WI, we're in the middle of Winter Storm Bailey, it looks beautiful and frozen outside, and I want to read something that will suck me in while the snow piles up and my fireplace burns.
This series, sadly, is not what I want on a snowy day such as today.
I stopped because I can't stand the dialogue and how it was all written. It annoyed me so much that I got mad. I've had enough of Will and hearing about him. Avery's yammering on and on about everything. Pages upon pages describing one thing.
Like the first book, this one is a fast read. I finished this part in two days. Although sometimes the story leaves big questions, like why were sully and Jericho at that arena just when avery and her family had to fight there and why did they save them and not the other humans. This seems a little strange to me. I think that the writers had no other option to get them out of the arena and got a little to creative about it. But if you do not care to much about these things, the book is entertaining.
Book #2 is a fast read...as Avery meets some big disappointments along the journey. It is clear that she has good instincts, but doesn't follow through with them because of others that she cares about. This book is a sequel to the first book and if you like the first, then you must read this second one.
Surprisingly, Will's character is revealed. He is caring, somewhat selfish, and could co-exist with Urthmen if they were so obliged. Of course, they aren't. So can Will be counted on when it's life or death that you are facing?
The second book far exceeded the first. There are some answers! There is the standard dystopian violence you would expect without going into complete gory details, making this series more appropriate for younger audiences as well as older. The romance side of this book is building. I have already downloaded the third book and can't wait to see what comes next.
Enjoy this world and characters. Plenty of action, tension, and conflict as this small band of survivors find their way in a hostile post apocalyptic world. The authors do a good job of blending young adult emotions and feelings in this world of hard choices. Only real complaint with the writing is the heavy use of metaphors.
I'm usually not a fan of switching narrators in the middle of a series (it looks like there's a new narrator in the next book too) but so far books 1&2 have been great! It's a great post apocalyptic series! Some people and animals have mutated due to biological warfare a few hundred years ago. Now the remaining humans want to fight back against the Urthmen who kill and enslave humans.
Book 2 is as good as book 1. I love the emotions this book makes me feel. I feel as though I am out there with the characters fighting hoping just trying to survive each day.So excited to read the next book.Great job
I read first in this series free from Amazon. Now I'm hooked, and I have to recommend it! Books are so expensive that ordinarily I won't try a new author. What if I hate it? But this way we both win, I have a new author I can enjoy, they get a new reader!
This one is a real nail biter full of suspense and intrigue. The interplay among the characters is dynamic with delightful humor that makes for fun reading. I am excited about the next adventure as I go for book 3.
Well. This just got interesting! The book is quite a bit cleaner than the first one, as far as editing goes. The storyline picks up and the stakes are higher. I still think it could use another go at a final edit, but I'll keep reading the series to see what happens.
