Summers in the seaside town of Noquit Maine are quiet and relaxing ... unless you find a mysterious dead body, a hunky ex-boyfriend shows up and you start getting instructions from ghostly relatives.

That's exactly what happens to Morgan Blackmoore.

Suddenly, she finds herself in a race against time as she's launched into a dangerous treasure hunt that pits her against modern day pirates who think she has the key to a three hundred year old secret.

To complicate matters even more, one of her sisters keeps talking to the ghost of their dead grandmother, another has crystals with unusually powerful healing properties and her cat has an uncanny habit of showing up in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Not to mention that her ex-boyfried, Luke Hunter, suddenly shows up in town after ten years of being overseas and claims to want to help her fight off these deadly pirates, but Morgan finds herself fighting her attraction to him instead.

Will Morgan outwit the treasure hunters and find the real killer before Sheriff Overton puts her in jail? And what about Luke, is he really a good guy or just after the treasure himself?

3 stars to Leighann Dobbs's Dead & Buried, the second in the Blackmoore Sisters Mystery series. Another short and quick read with bits of humor, romance, "magic" and fun!

This was the third short mystery I've read by the author and am noticing the trend... as she publishes multiple stories each year, her books tend to be shorter than a full length novel. They also tend to have less complex plots with very few suspects. It's almost as if you're setup from the beginning to know who the killer is but your goal is to figure out why.

Story
A dead man shows up on the Blackmoore sisters property. The sheriff who has it out for the sisters picks one of them to arrest based off a potential clue. The sisters band together to determine if it's truly a case of pirates seeking ancient treasure buried on their property. With the help of some new and old friends, they solve the puzzle and find some of the treasure once again obtaining a way to pay the taxes on the land they inherited from their deceased parents.

Strengths
The sisters are a quirky bunch that will make you smile. The cast of supporting characters provides humor and a fun backdrop to the story. The mystery behind the Blackmoore family gets more puzzling with each book in the series.

Weaknesses
The plot is very simple. The murderer isn't really ever called out behind the "team" they worked for. It's not like a traditional cozy where you have varied suspects who live in or around the town and interact with the village folk. If you're looking to cut your teeth on a bone of a mystery, this isn't ideal for you.

Final Thoughts
Given the length and frequency of the novels, they deliver a charming environment you'd love to be part of, but with the mystery lacking any real depth or complexity, you won't find yourself embroiled in a challenging plot.

I gave the first book in the series 4 stars. This one was closer to 3.5 to 3.75 territory. I like the characters for the most part. This book was more treasure hunt than mystery, but still an enjoyable read.

The Blackmoore Sisters book series continues with this volume. This book was great. The reader won't feel lost or confused if they read the book on its own.

Three sisters who live together with their cat Belladonna are the story's central protagonists, and the setting is Maine. Every sister in the family has a unique eccentricity that adds to their appeal and enriches the narrative.

A long lost love is rekindled as well as magic and pirates in this enjoyable adventure. This was more of a treasure hunt than a mystery, but it was still a lot of fun to read. Furthermore, this time around there was a little more supernatural activity.

It frequently has simpler stories with fewer suspects. It almost feels like you've been set up from the start to know who the murderer is, but your objective is to determine why.

Once more, it wasn't a difficult read and it was quick. The plot has enough action to keep me interested, and although the characters aren't particularly complex, they seem appealing enough that I was interested in seeing how things worked out for them in the end.

I enjoyed the book overall and was engrossed in the story.

This is the second book af the Blackmoore Sisters series. I really enjoyed this book. The book can be read as a stand alone with the reader not feeling lost or confused. The author does a nice job of telling what happened in the first book without giving too much away or leaving the reader feeling lost. This book was very well written and well paced. The characters are well developed and continue to grow as well as likable. I will continue reading this series.

I really love these sisters and all their special mystical talents. Belladonna the cat has some type of special powers too, and she came in very handy a few times as the girls along with Jake, Cal and Morgan's old flame, Luke fought off modern day pirates looking for the Blackmoore treasure.

I remember at the end of the first book that Morgan had thought she'd seen her old boyfriend and had meant at that point to read this book soon, but at least I finally did get to it. I really can't stand that crooked old sheriff and hope that something happens to get him out of office someday! This book didn't end with any kind of sidebar cliff hanger, but I'm still anxious to read about more of their adventures.

I started the Blackmore Sisters series by Leighann Dobbs a while ago and finally got to the second book, Dead and Buried yesterday. The only problem was I chose to listen to this one on audible and the narrator was horrible! The whole story was thrown off for me by the way she read it and I think that had a lot to do with my meh response to it. I did enjoy the first one and have started the third, with a different narrator luckily, so I'm hopeful. It is a charming series and I do want to continue. Just shows one how important a narrator is when choosing audible.

Anyway the Blackmore sisters live in their centuries old house passed down through their family. These aren't just any sisters, there's a bit of magic to them and the house they live in. Oh and I can't forget their faithful cat Belladonna, who always seems to know exactly where the clues are and what they're thinking before they do! This time there's pirates on the loose, yes pirates and they're targeting the Blackmore sisters land. Of course the sisters no nothing about current day pirates, but when Morgan finds a body that's fallen over a cliff all signs point to treasure hunters looking for long lost treasure left by one of the sister's ancestors. As in the first book the sheriff is all about finding fault with the sisters no matter whose really to blame, he's got a real grudge against them and will do anything to lock them up. Evidence or no evidence doesn't matter to him!

To stop the sheriff from jumping to conclusions the sisters decide to solve this one on their own. They've got the experience, it wasn't long ago they had to help Morgan get out of another tough spot earlier in the year with another murder. This time they're going to have to go into their scary attic, a place they've all avoided after being warned by their deceased mother to never go in there, to search for clues about this treasure and hopefully find anything they can about where it is and who put it there, wherever it is. They'll also get some help from an old boyfriend of Morgan's, but will Morgan accept his help? It's been 10 years since he said goodbye to enter the military and broke her heart. Between the sisters, their friends, Belladonna and Morgan's old/new love interest they'll uncover the clues and discover exactly what's going on, but before they can get to the bottom of whose behind the murder the sheriff will arrest one of the sisters. He has no evidence and is again only doing so out of malice towards the sisters.

I wish the narrator would have been better for this one. The story was good and I enjoy Leighann Dobbs' books very much. I just didn't like the way the woman read this one. Beside that though I enjoyed this one and have already started book 3, "Dead Tide." There fun, quick reads about sisters who live together and have a bit of magic about them. Nothing to fantastical or unreal, just a hint of magic and even a few ghost sightings in the old house. I'm not into fantasy reads, but this is just plain fun and not too far out for this realistic reader. I've only got sisters, so I love the sister bond in this series and since I live with one of my sisters it's always enjoyable to read about sisters living with sisters. I believe there's 9 books in this series, so I'm looking forward to several days of fun and frivolity with the Blackmore sisters and of course I can't forget their almost human cat Belladonna! Happy Reading!

This was the first book that I have read in this series and I loved it! The story is based in Maine and the main characters are three sisters who live together with their cat Belladonna. Each sister in the house has a particular quirk which makes them and the story even more enjoyable. In this story there is what seems to be modern day pirates and it's up to the Blackmoor sisters to find out what they want . Add in some love interests for the sisters and plenty of mystery and adventure and you have one very enjoyable read. Beautiful setting and interesting characters makes this a book to read again and again. I will be continuing reading this series.

Want a really sweet (no sex) cozy mystery? This is the series for you. This is a fun romp with pirates and magic and long lost love rekindled. I fully admit I am determined to find out why the Sheriff has it out for the Blackmoore girls and am truly loving the other mysteries along the way.

Eh... There were some glaring errors, like the elderly lady being 88 in the first book, and then said to be close to 100 and in her 90's within the same section in this one. I'm not sure if that was meant to be a blatant error, or if the author just forgot what age she'd assigned the woman.

I found myself rolling my eyes more and more. "Pirates? We know those don't exist anymore." I was under the impression the sisters, at least the oldest two with their fancy degrees, were smart, but this book makes them all look like ignorant idiots. The repetition of the pirate thing got old fast, and made them look more and more ignorant. I was getting so annoyed with it, but was glad there was a character who knew some things. They live in the modern age though, so, pull up Google now and then, huh? Especially the sister who is "good with computers."

Then there's the, let's follow the cat, no questions asked, vs, what is that weirdo cat doing? There's no way I'm following that cat. Why would I follow her digging when the last two or three times she dug up something important and we all know that?!

Then there's the very clear clues, the answers thought about either hours or a day prior, then the sisters just having no clue at all when these clues come up. It's so very clear, and I did not think they were this stupid in the first book.

In the first book, I was annoyed by the excessive use of "Well" to start a sentence. I brushed it off as a thing all the sisters do because when you live around people, you will mimic them. But in this book, everyone does it. Even the people not from the area. So it looks like it's a way the author likes to start dialogue and either an editor missed the excessive repetition, or the author ignored the note. The more I hear it, the more annoyed I get. It makes all the characters blend in together, and lessens their individuality. If I had the ability to see how many well's are in this book, I'd list them here. It's too much!

I liked this one less than the first. I'm going to continue because I got a box set. I also think the narrator just rubs me the wrong way with her breathy noises, mouth sounds, inability to separate the characters dialogue wise, and the weird accent she uses that isn't at all like the accent I think she's trying to do.

Had I not already bought a box set, I would have given up by now. This series just isn't for me. The inconsistencies, repetition, and unlikable, idiotic characters that shouldn't be as stupid as they are are becoming an annoyance. It is also so weird how, you've got a sister who went into gems, sells them, knows what they do, but is surprised when they work? Then seems to struggle with how weird it is, how she didn't think they could do this. Then why did you get into this to begin with? I can get it to an extent, like it would have made better sense if it was written as a, "oh, I know these things can do this, but to actually heal a wound seems strange." This would work better than, "I say these rocks have these properties and use them and sell them for these properties, but woah, it worked? How strange. Didn't think that could happen."

I think the story isn't bad, the plot isn't bad, and I am curious as to what kind of magical properties are potentially being introduced. If the characters were written better, it would be easier to get into.

Hmmm, Loc 1137: Morgan doesn't trust Luke and Cal says ..."We've known Luke since we were kids and he was always a good guy. A few years in the military probably hasn't changed that." To me that sounds like somebody thinks being in the U.S. military makes you a bad guy or at least questionable. I find that a worrisome opinion. Fortunately the other references to military in the book are favorable.
Evidently the town where the sisters live doesn't have any selectmen or town council or any amount of government to rein in the sheriff. He magically appears and writes no digging citations and there's no appeal, no other person around to double check that this guy is kosher? I'm willing to suspend my disbelief, but come on!
Morgan is supposed to trust her gut, but her constantly fluttering stomach that sometimes flops around like fish out of water is so squirmy that it makes me wonder if she should see an internist. Between warning flutters and flips and emotional romantic flips and flutters it's a wonder she's not in the hospital. Chapter 21, wait, now there are bats flapping around in her stomach! This poor woman is really in bad shape.
This light read is the second in the series. While it has all kinds of appealing elements like a historic house, possible treasure, an arch enemy, romance, and a magical cat it really has some big plot problems as mentioned before. I read it more for the potential than for the actuality.

I did like the mystery in this one compared to the first one. It was more interesting and more compelling. I really enjoyed the whole pirate thing with the map and the clues. It was interesting to see how the treasure linked to the Blackmoore family. I was more interested in that aspect than the murder though. I loved Belladonna so much. She was hoot and had me smile every time she came onto the page. I loved how she seems to be guiding the girls along the way as well as being their guardian angel, which was so stinking adorable. I think Belladonna has been my favorite character in this entire series. I did like the romance between Luke and Morgan more than Jake and Fiona just because Luke and Morgan had history so it was easier to see them fall into a romance. But in all honesty I could do without the romance because it didn’t do much for me. I was more interested in the treasure hunting and the mystery. Overall, I enjoyed this one and enjoying the series as a whole. Just for Belladonna alone is worth the read.

Leighann Dobbs wrote pretty good book to my taste in Dead & Buried. Four sisters live in Noquit, and with a despicable oaf as Chief of Police trying to pin murders on them, they better live the up to the name of the town. A long ago relative was a sailing ship captain (told you into was a long time ago) and they couldn't count how many grand dads without help. They live in the ancestral home with the attic used as storage for "the Stuff" the generations before left there.

Morgan, the eldest, gets curious about a much bigger flock of gulls than normal, so investigates. She finds a dead man after descending rickety stairs to the beach just far enough to see him. Back at the top, she is met by the oaf Chief of Police who blames her for the murder.

Let us not forget the two gangs of thieves looking for pirates' treasure, a boyfriend gone 10 years, and a cat named Belladona by the end of the book.

The first book was good, but this one was lacking so much. First Morgan is boring and seems like she allows people to walk all over her. Her ex that just left her and didn’t say anything to her for 10 years shows up and all is fine. She gives him a couple dirty looks and has a curt voice?? She seems weak and not very bright. How many times is this cat going to show them exactly what they need and be there just randomly. Also, why would anyone think a cat would follow a road before just going through the woods? It’s a cat… not hey don’t like roads or cars they would 100% go through the woods… anyways the concept is good, but so much was added as filler that wasn’t not needed and others were left out. Also, no matter where you live no way some random guy comes in and is voted in to be Sheriff especially as he seems to be doing a bad job, every person from that town would have already gotten the town council to hold a vote to fire him and have a new election.

3.25 stars.

The sisters found a dead body down the cliffs of their land and again, the town's sheriff is sure one of them is the killer. When the ex-boyfriend of oldest sister Morgan suddenly appeared in time to help them subdue a couple of home invaders, the sisters realized that they are dealing with some modern-day pirates who believe one of their ancestors have buried treasure on their land.

Jake, who we met in the first book, is now second sister Fiona's boyfriend. But he has been consigned to administration by the sheriff and is not privy to the investigation. We also have Cal, the playboy antiquities dealer, being more involved in this book. I can see something developing there between Cal and third sister Celeste.

It appears we are going to see more witchery/magic elements in these books, especially with Celeste. But there's still no explanation as to why the sheriff has it in for the sisters. So, onto the next book. :)

These are fun, short cozy mysteries that make up this series. They are the perfect little snack when you want to get through a book in a day, you’re needing something to occupy your mind while doing needlework, or you’ll be commuting a fair distance. This particular book in the series is an adventure with pirates. I love a good pirate story.

We delve a little more into the history of the family as well as the siblings that the story centers around. There is what seems to be a throw away scene that provides information about their mom that I think is going to be important later.

Every character still comes alive on the page even if the character focus has changed. Last book, it was Fiona and this time we focus on Morgan. The sheriff is still awful. This time he’s the least of their worries. I’m really enjoying this series and definitely recommend.

Part 2 of a 2-in-1 edition, this follows Dead Wrong. This one concentrates on Morgan, the black-haired sister. All the sisters have "ice-blue" eyes - even the cat does! And the men usually have sapphire eyes. What's wrong with just saying "blue eyes" after the first one? Sounds like a YA book where all the hunky boys have ice-blue eyes. Morgan's ex-boyfriend Luke is back in town to add some romance to the story, which gets just a teeny bit tiresome. She finds a dead body on the cliffs, and they all get pulled into a modern pirate story. The pirates are looking for a treasure which is supposedly on the Blackmoore land, and it turns out Luke is looking for it too. A couple run-ins with scary pirates, and the usual pestering by the crooked local sheriff, and the excitement is on. Interesting enough for me to buy the next two in the series, but not something I would reread right away.

A dead man is found o the sisters' property, and the local sheriff quickly wants to charge them with murder. He's had a grudge against the family, seems like almost forever, and no one is certain why. Morgan's ex shows up after 10 yrs. and he's involved with a "security company" that is doing all they can to keep the sisters safe. Why? Seems treasure hunters are after a map that leads to treasure, and these hunters are not in the nice category at all.

The sisters also find themselves developing "powers" and it's freaking them out just as much as being in danger from the hunters. The characters are developing in this 2nd of the series, and more is being learned of their family heritage.

Loved this story!

Pirate treasure!! How cute is this storyline?!?! These Blackmore sisters are a hoot! I am loving Celeste & can’t wait for her book. But this one really revolves around Morgan…and Luke!!! In addition to the mystery, danger and constant annoyance from the sheriff, could a long lost love have returned? In the last book we learned of Morgan’s high school boyfriend who left her ten years ago to join the military…and she never heard from him again. So why does she keep thinking she’s seeing him now?
And is one of the sisters going to be wrongfully arrested again? Which one this time?
These are the cutest books and are just so well written! Can’t wait to read the next one!

Another 3.5 stars for me, rounding to 4. And another book I finished a bit back, so any inaccuracies are from my memory failure.

The Blackmoore sisters are back, and there's a corpse in their garden. There's also a hint of pirate treasure, an ex making a (reasonably) unexpected appearance, and a dodgy sheriff to worry about. And Belladonna the cat is probably the cutest plot device I've run into in a while.

This was less of a mystery and more of a treasure hunt, but still plenty of fun to read. There was also a bit more of the supernatural this time around, as one of the sisters (I'm thinking Celeste, but I may be misremembering) is holding regular conversations with their dead grandmother, Morgan is getting life-saving gut instincts, and Belladonna seems to be pointing things out for the sisters when they're stuck with no idea where to go next. We also get a bit more of youngest sister Jolene this time around.

Again, this was a fast read that wasn't heavy-going. There was enough action to keep the story going, and the characters aren't especially deep, but seem likeable enough that I wanted to find out if everything all turned out alright in the end for them. Add in another romance and a few twists to the plot, and it was a nice light read that suited my mood.

This is the second in the series, which I am reading consecutively, but each book can be read as a stand alone.

This one focuses mostly on Morgan, but all the Blackmoore sisters are involved, as is their feisty but, thank goodness, always available lawyer. I may have enjoyed this one more than the first.

These are cozy mysteries with a hint of the supernatural and a touch of romance. All are contempory and very readable. I did get a bit tired of hearing of hearts lurching in chests (where else would they be?) and ice blue eyes (all the sisters--and their cat), but overall I liked the book and got very caught up in the plot.

Palate cleanser!

Short, but fun book. Leighann Dobbs manages to squeeze much more out of roughly 4 hours of story than most authors manages to drone out during 12 or more hours.
I really appreciate that - and find it quite impressive.

Don't get me wrong, the story isn't exactly advanced, but it's light-hearted in all the right ways and the mystery and paranormal aspects are nicely handled alongside with the characters (and the cat).

The narrator, Hollis McCarthy, is really, really good. I find her very enjoyable and a real pleasure to listen to. Such a lovely voice. I think I might just continue straight to book three just because of her!
