5 ‘desperately wishing I had a fireman of my own’ stars!
The Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel is one of the few “must read” series on my shelves. The stories make me laugh, make me think, and have me falling in love again and again. Desperately Seeking Fireman is a shorter story, but it’s filled with all the things I love most about Jennifer Bernard’s writing!
Blurb…
Fire Captain Jeb Stone and incredibly successful press secretary Nita Moreno have both been burned by love before. That's why neither of them is looking for more than a few steamy nights of passion.

My thoughts…
I have to be honest, I loved this story and even though it’s a novella, I’m giving it 5 stars because of Jed and Nita. They are great people, the kind I’d love to count amongst my friends. Apart they’re amazing, together they’re perfect! My only complaint about this story is that I would have loved to spend more time getting to know them.
The bottom line…
Jennifer Bernard is a fantastic storyteller, and this series is wonderful. The stories are about real people and the ups and downs of finding that one person who makes you complete, and no matter how many times I read these books, I never get enough!
If you’re looking for something new to dive in to, something romantic, exciting and steamy, then look no further than The Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel!
An ARC of this story was generously provided by Avon Books.
Jeb Stone is the captain of the San Gabriel fire department for shift C. He was married for several years but got divorced. He has an eighteen year old daughter who wants him to date and get on with his life. He meets Nita Moreno at his friend's wedding. He's instantly attracted to her and kind of flirts with her. He is still married at this time and this was a little off-putting for me. There's a reason behind Jeb and his wife's marriage but that's for you to read.
The story moves ahead a few years and Melissa, his friend's wife is coming to get an exclusive interview with a Senator. The Senator that Nita works for. This interview takes place in San Lucia and Jeb gets bamboozled into shadowing Melissa because she's hugely pregnant. He's surprised to see Nita and that his attraction to her hasn't waned.
I hate to admit it but this is one of those series that I have fallen behind on. It's a good series and I hope to catch up on it now. My main complaint in saying that is that her books aren't on Kindle through my library. I love to support the authors I read but sometimes I can't justify the money at the time I want to read it. Then I tend to forget because of the amount of books I have to read.
This is a novella and its just sweet. About two people who have lost and still keep trying to pull it all together. The story is witty, engaging and sexy. If you want a story that is just precious, this is it.
One thing is clear. Jennifer Bernard never disappoints. I had so much fun reading this story. The core of the story touched me very deeply and brought tears to my eyes. Another excellent read from Ms. Bernard.
Good story about new beginnings. Nita and Jeb met at the wedding of Brody and Melissa (The Fireman Who Loved Me). There was a zing of attraction, but Jeb was married and Nita was with someone, so they didn't pursue it. Three years later, Jeb has been divorced for six months (very interesting backstory on his marriage) and his eighteen-year-old daughter is pushing him to get out there and date.
Jeb is simply enjoying life as it now is. We see him driving a rented sports car on a gorgeous day, headed on vacation to nowhere special. Then he gets a phone call from his good friend Brody, asking for a favor. It seems that his wife Melissa has gotten a hot tip for a story on a scandalous senator and has taken off to pursue it. The problem is that she's eight and a half months pregnant and Brody is out of his mind with worry over her. So he begs his buddy Jeb to follow Melissa to Santa Lucia Island and just keep an eye on her. He does not expect to run into Nita on the island.
Nita is the press secretary for the senator, who is hiding out on Santa Lucia. She's talked him into giving an exclusive to the only reporter she trusts - Melissa. However, she didn't know that Melissa was pregnant. Nita's work with the senator has pretty much become her whole life. Her relationship with her ex ended when she got pregnant. She was devastated when she lost the baby and has been fighting feelings of failure ever since. She is surprised to see Jeb get off the ferry with Melissa.
It's obvious from the start that the zing between Jeb and Nita is still there - and now both are free to pursue it. I loved how Jeb made his interest clear from the beginning. Not just to get her into bed, but also to get to know her. He was an amazingly sensitive and observant guy, and I loved how he saw the sadness in her eyes. His ability to get her to open up to him was fantastic and I loved how he was immediately on her side regarding the situation. Nita is a woman who likes to stay busy and there wasn't much for her to do on the island. She got involved with helping the old lady who owns the inn and quickly involved Jeb in helping also. There's a terrific scene involving Jeb, the tea room, and an apron that had me laughing out loud.
Jeb and Nita spend a lot of time together, and the heat between them continues to grow. The intensity freaks Nita out a little bit, as she doesn't have a lot of confidence in herself as a woman. Everything comes to a head on a wild boat ride during a storm when Nita tries to tell Jeb she isn't worth his time. I loved Jeb's reaction, which gave Nita a lot to think about. Nita's "aha" moment was deeply emotional. The ending was fantastic, with a solution that I did see coming, but was perfect nonetheless.
I liked the secondary characters also. Catching up with Brody and Melissa was great. It was sweet to see Brody's overprotectiveness for Melissa during her pregnancy. I loved seeing him as a brand new daddy. Nita's boss, the senator, was a real piece of work. At first, I thought he was just a bit on the clueless side regarding his extracurricular activity, but he turned out to be obnoxiously selfish. I was very happy to see Nita stand up to him. My favorite was young Charlie, the island firefighter, and an all-around good guy. I loved his respect for Jeb as a firefighter and his determination to get Jeb to help out the young crew at the fire station. He was amazing during the effort to get Melissa off the island and to the hospital.
A heartwarming, yet sexy, contemporary novella! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com:
Nita Moreno, press secretary for Senator Stryker, first meets Jeb Stone at her best friend Melissa’s wedding. Nita had been with financier Bradford, who was a part of the senator’s team. Although she believed they would one day marry, she could not deny her attraction to Jeb. She had noticed him watching her at the wedding and even spoke to him briefly before she discovered that he was already married. Three years later, however, financier Bradford is part of her past. The senator is now in the midst of a scandal when Nita finds him a hideaway on the island of Santa Lucius. Not trusting any other reporter, the senator has agreed to speak with Melissa. So Nita has arranged to have Melissa visit the island, although she is unaware that Melissa is now eight months pregnant.
Jeb Stone, the captain of Shift C at the San Gabriel Fire Station, was attracted to Nita at Melissa and his boss, Brody’s, wedding. Just that morning, his wife had told him she wanted an open marriage and he had been tempted when he saw Nita, but, other than a few flirtatious remarks, he had not acted on it. Marriage meant more to him than that. He believed in the commitment of marriage and besides, he would not do that to his daughter, Alison. But once Alison turned eighteen, his wife divorced him for someone else. His daughter has been encouraging him to find someone else and get on with his life. Now, three years later, on vacation, Brody calls him with a favor. He is concerned about Melissa and his unborn child and wants Jeb to go to Santa Lucius and keep an eye on her. Although he knows Melissa will have a fit, he agrees to do it.
Arriving on the island, Jeb comes face-to-face with Nita and a furious Melissa, who knows that her husband sent him to look after her. But when Jeb comes to her rescue, Melissa forgives him. After being burned in the past, Jeb and Nita are not looking for a committed relationship, but this does not stop them from exploring the chemistry that sparks between them. However, as they spend time together, their feelings for each other grow. Will their relationship survive once they are off the island? During their previous ruined relationships, both set up barriers around their hearts to avoid further heartache, not letting others in. Will they find healing and love enough to break down the walls they have erected?
A heartwarming novella, DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMAN, the latest novella in gifted author Jennifer Bernard’s BACHELOR FIREMEN OF SAN GABRIEL series, is a delightfully witty, sexy contemporary romance that will brighten up an afternoon. Ms. Bernard’s talented storytelling brings the characters to life and draws the reader right into the story. By the time you are midway into the story, it almost feels as if these are people you know.
Brimming with humor, passion, an island vacation, pregnancy, divorce, romance, love and new beginnings, this story is memorable! The only problem I have with this delightful series is waiting for the next book. The next release, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FIREMAN, is due to release in February 2014. Meanwhile, if you have not experienced any of Ms. Bernard’s novels, this novella is an excellent start!
Hotness, Humor and Hubris on the [Almost] High Seas
People coming to grip with enormous life changes through the power generated by Love is the theme of this story. One woman about to have a baby, another having lost one, one man losing his wife in divorce, and another losing his humanity with his wealth of hubris. And, there’s an elderly lady kind of just losing it.
When I think of this story one thing keeps popping to the front of the line of moments and that is the “Cross-Dressing State Senator” doing something so remarkably heinous that the scandal he’s been trying to contain will seem like a news story on violating Robert’s Rules of Order in comparison. Such foolishness is hard to believe considering that the person’s selfish motives endanger lives.
But, when you’re dealing with a contemporary love story series like Jennifer’s Bachelor Firemen, you are entering another dimension filled with young, hot, often single, and always noble, firemen in a smallish California town. In other words it is a fantasy. it ditches the reality of real romance at the door. And, thank goodness! Why would anyone read a contemporary romance that mimicked reality? We read romance, often, for the fantasy of it. I guess that’s my way of saying it can be a little unreal, but I am willing to suspend my cynical nature to enjoy the story.
With a lot of hot hunks lusting after curvier women; or smart women, or job-dedicated women (in other words normal women) you know it’s a fantasy. Did I mention these guys are in fantastic shape, clean, seem to like doing chores and know how to fix a pipe?
I also wanted to mention that I don’t think I have ever read a situation like this ever before. There’s nothing same-old, same-old about Jennifer’s plot! There are a lot of pieces, but some are plot specific and move us along, and others like Jeb giving up his vacation time to babysit another Fire Captain’s pregnant wife tell us about the characters.
The hook up between the two main characters is a shoe-in from the first page, and it’s scalding hot. We get edge of your seat dangerous situations too. Even though there are plenty of humorous moments and we know a happy ending is in sight, the truth is that the danger, frustration, heartbreak and uncertainty are creating serious problems, and dangerous situations for the mostly lovable characters.
I’m not saying the story isn’t sweet just because it’s spicy. Jennifer has the real talent of writing really great sex scenes where the participants respect each other and still get down and dirty. It’s nice to read steamy, erotic romance where the icky slang isn’t used, and where there are no safewords needed. Not that I don’t enjoy reading those things, but those safe words are getting a real workout these days.
This novella left me feeling warm all over *waggles eyebrows.* So, I highly recommend DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMEN. While certainly comprehensible and fun as a stand alone, it’s best read as part of the series. And, it adds to the series’ next book, coming up in February, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FIREMAN.
Just when I think that Jennifer Bernard cannot possibly surpass her last fireman hero – Psycho, or any who came before – she does and oh, how she does it in Jeb Stone. I want this man under my tree for Christmas.
One of the things I love most about reading Jennifer Bernard’s Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel series is how real her characters are and how dreamily romantic they fall in love. Jeb Stone has lived a loveless life the past five years. He stayed married to his teenage love for the sake of his daughter but now feels he’ll never find what he needs to heal his heart and allow him to face a brighter future with someone at his side. That is, until he is reunited with Nita Moreno. The attraction was instant at the wedding but it’s fortified two-fold when they meet again on Santa Lucia. HOT Healing Sex seems to be a simple solution to scratch an itch plaguing both Nita and Jeb but neither is sure how to handle what happens next. Their attraction doesn’t cool but explodes as if gasoline’s been thrown on a fire.
Jennifer consistently conjures characters that touch our hearts with pain and heartache from the past, worries about the future, and fear of rejection as they succumb to intense attractions yet we continue to fall hard for them every time. Nita and Jeb are no different. They carry pain from the past, apprehension in going after what they want, and fear of giving in to what they need. The characters in DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMAN are the story. We’re treated to the delightful Melissa McQuire Brody as she attempts to pursue a story while on the verge of giving birth at any moment. We experience the frantic over possessiveness of, the madly in love with his woman, Capt. Harry Brody who wants to wrap her up in a bubble if only he could catch her. Secondary characters delight us, making us smile and delight in their presence. And of course, we meet and fall in love with the sexy Jeb Stone and beautiful Nita Moreno who despite their fears and their priorities, soon fall prey to the most natural and amazing emotion of all - LOVE.
I highly recommend DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMAN by Jennifer Bernard to anyone who has read any of the other Bachelor Firemen novels but especially if you read the first, THE FIREMAN WHO LOVED ME, as this gives you more of Melissa and the sexy Captain Brody. But if by chance, you haven't had a taste of Jennifer's HOT FIREMEN yet, then definitely pick up DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMAN because you'll quickly be hooked and in love with Jeb Stone! I recommend the entire series to everyone who loves sexy heroes, delightful heroines, fun making secondary characters and stories that stay with you long after the last page is turned. Jennifer does HOT FIREMEN like no other.

Jeb Stone, captain of shift C of the San Gabriel fire department, again meets the woman he has not forgotten about for three years, press secretary Nita Moreno. Jeb has had a knock to his manhood with his now divorced wife declaring her lesbianism. They stayed married until their daughter turns 18. They meet again because of Melissa, 8 months pregnant, has gone off to an the Santa Lucia Island to follow up on a lead given to her by Nita. This novella parrells Psycho returning to Loveless in "How To Tame A Wild Fireman." Melissa is not happy with Jeb's babysitting of her, but has to accept it since he refuses to leave. And there is the added benefit of Nita. Nita is at wits end with her cross dressing boss, a senator, who has taken refugage in San-L. She talks him into telling his story to Melissa who will treat him with respect. She has broken-up with her self-important boyfriend and the father of her miscarriaged baby. She too remembers Jeb. There is sexual tenison between these two and Jeb telling Nita within the first few hours that he is going to make love to her. He also suggestes that they treat their time on the San_L as a long date. This a theme that is carried on through the novella. As I've come to expect in a Bernard novel, there are social issues. This one brings alcoholism again. It was discussed in the first novel, "Hot For Fireman" with Melissa's father. The other issue touched upon is dementia with the owner of The Enchanted Garden. Her dementia is more of daffy little old lady who is sweet. And as I've come to expect from a Bernard novel, is humor. Nita refers to the senator as Senator Spanx instead of Styker, behind his back of course. And the no make test is funny and something all woman can relate to. I really enjoyed this novella. The storylines in the text were given enough room to be worked out. The updates on the characters were great. The author does an excellent job of keeping the details correct from previous books. I really like that. Too many authors don't go back and read thier previous notes or books. So frustrating when a reader is spending from $8.00 to $12.00 per book.

I haven't read anything by Jennifer Bernard before, and I rarely read novellas. But when I had the opportunity to review this one, I couldn't pass up a story that promised hunky firemen and a steamy romance.
Three years ago, fire captain Jeb and press secretary Nita met at a wedding and haven't been able to forget each other since. Fast forward to the present and they find themselves both single and on the same island where Nita is hiding out with her boss, a cross-dressing senator. Jeb promises a friend and fellow fireman to keep an eye on his pregnant wife who is determined to have an exclusive interview with the senator. Nita and Jeb find themselves continuously thrown together and as their attractions for each other grows, each has to learn to let go of the past and see what the future can hold.
This story was just such a cute and fun read. I love how Nita was hiding out on an island with the senator whose secret life of cross-dressing was just leaked online. Talk about a PR nightmare! While she's dealing with her crazy boss, Nita can't help but notice the hot fireman, who just so happens to be single now, who showed up to babysit her pregnant best friend. The characters of this novella were so fun and really well developed for such a short story.
Not only did Nita and Jeb have a pretty steamy romance, there was still depth and emotion to their relationship and lives. Both had been hurt by past relationships and had to learn to let each other in and trust that the future could be different. Watching their relationship grow was sweet as they shared and opened up to each other.
Overall, this was a cute read. I think I would have liked it more if I had read the series and knew all of the characters' backstories. So if you're a fan of this series, definitely check out this novella! Even if you haven't read anything by Jennifer Bernard, you'll still be able to enjoy Nita and Jeb's relationship. I'm definitely going to be trying out some of Jennifer's full novels to learn even more about the irresistible firemen of San Gabriel!
P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N. — That is exactly what this book is from the first word until the last. This entire series is awesome but this is my absolute favorite.
It is a short, quick read that you can knock out in a few hours, but don’t let the length fool you. It is not short on good hard-core emotional romance. The characters are easy to relate to and very well described. I love books about second chance love, but sometimes they can be a little weird when transitioning from the past to present day. That is not a worry you will have with this book. It easily transitions through three years without any hitches or catches. If the characters and second chance love don’t have you hooked, don’t worry, the plot surely will. It is very fun, unique, fresh and humorous. The tone of the book is very warm and fun; however, it also touches on series topics such as miscarriage, divorce, loveless marriages, corrupt politicians and preterm birth.
The firemen series by Jennifer Bernard just has this special “something” that is hard to put into words. They catch and hold your attention and leave you begging for more, well actually begging to be transported to San Gabriel FD, ha. They just hook you – hook, line and sinker. I wish all books were this easy and fun to read. If you are looking for a quick read that will warm your heart and leave you smiling this is definitely your book!!
Captain Jeb Stone and Nita had a brief encounter several years ago at the wedding of Brody and Melissa. Unfortunately, Jeb was married and Nita was working on it. This novella is 3 years later when the two are called together for the greater good of hard-hitting news and a VERY pregnant reporter, Melissa. Circumstances are incredibly different when they meet up the second time. Up front Jeb lets Nita know his intentions to spend the few days on St. Lucia on a "date" with her. "The kind where I want to find out what your favorite flavor of ice cream is, and whether you like Shane Black movies and who your first crush was and why you looked sad when you asked me about Melissa and the bathroom."
I can't say much about this novella other than it is a beautiful story of friendship, second chances, forgiveness and loving yourself just as you are. Wounds and flaws didn't make her less perfect. They made he more perfectly human.
Fun novella. The hero and heroine met at her friend's wedding to his fellow fire captain. They were attracted, but he was married and she had a boyfriend, so they let it go. Three years later, she's on one of those California islands with her boss, a state senator in the midst of a crossdressing scandal. Her friend, now 8-1/2 months pregnant, is invited to get an exclusive interview with Senator Spanx, and her husband begs his fire captain friend to use the vacation he's on to go to the island and keep an eye on the pregnant lady. Which brings the two attracted people back into contact. He's now divorced, her boyfriend is now an ex, and they're on this gorgeous island... with her boss and her pregnant friend. It's a sexy story, and a sweet story with a nice dollop of angst. Bernard turns out good stuff. I liked this one a lot.
Short but cute and it had it all! Cute story line and delicious characters. Hot romance! And babies with a little wild boat ride! Onto the next! I love series! Thanks
DESPERATELY SEEKING FIREMAN is a novella that is part of Jennifer Bernard’s Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel series. Fire Captain Jeb Stone and press secretary Nita Moreno
This is my first of the Bachelor Fireman books and it will not be my last.
I have to admit this much. This was recommended to me and I was hesitant because I really did not care for the cover. It looked photo shopped and cheesy. I am glad I went past my initial reaction.
I really enjoyed this one. It was a really quick read on a stormy winter morning. It was really kind of appropriate.
This is part of a series. Honestly I did not feel like I was lost in the character backstory. If I had read the others it would have only enhanced the story, it was not crucial to this one.
The whole politician with the secret cracked me up. The back-story of the previous relationships… loved. The whole thing tied up with gorgeous firemen… yes, please.
Nita, a reluctant heroine. Had many reasons to shrink away from romance. Her baby’s daddy was a jerk and so was her boss. No wonder she was worried for her heart.
Jeb, holy hotness. A guy with a soft gooey hart and abs of steel. I repeat. Yes, please.
Loved this. Now don’t get me wrong, this is not a full length novel and it moves pretty fast and you have to throw a lot into “just go with it” it’s a good for the story category. But, I loved it.
Can’t wait to go back and read more about the Bachelor Firemen. Those reviews will soon follow.
I really love this series. Why? Alpha Males. Firefighters. Lots of humor and sweet romance. This novella was no exception, but it was a little darker than the other books in the series. Both of the main characters, Jeb and Nita, have been seriously burned by their previous relationships.
There was a lot to love about this story. Their meet-cute was pretty adorable, even though they were both attached at the time. It takes a few years for them to finally get together, but when they do, they cannot deny their attaction. And Nita, particularly, needs to guard her wounded heart and seems to think Jeb is too good to be true. It’s true, Jeb is a fantastic fictional man, so I can see her dilemma.
The plot was pretty fun, getting stranded on an island with a hugely pregnant woman. This was a sweet story that was a great addition to the series.
So. Much. Cuteness. I had been dying to read this series for ages, and for some reason, I never found the time. When I saw this novella, it seemed like the perfect way to dive into the series. And right I was to be excited for this series, since Desperately Seeking Fireman was fantastic.
I loved the characters! I definitely cannot wait to go back and read the other books in the series, particularly the one featuring Melissa and Brody's story, since they were a fantastic couple. Jeb and Nita are so fun.
I totally recommend this one for anyone looking for a great romance! I know I will certainly be reading anything that Jennifer Bernard writes from here on out and will have to play catch up on the books she's already written :)
I was a little unsure at the beginning of this book. I was unsure if I liked Jeb but the more the story went on and how he did what he had to do for not only his daughter but the women he married even though he knew what his wife wanted I feel in love with him! Although the store was short it told you that even if you find someone that makes you have that "ZING" it maybe worth it! Great book and looking forward to the next!! The teaser at the end makes it hard to wait until March for the next in the series!! Worth reading for sure!!
Book number 4.5 in the Bachelor Fireman is an intriguing and entertaining fast read. The chemistry between Jeb and Nita is red hot and the passion sizzles with every page. The author has created a great setting for these heroes and gives the reader an enjoyable and entertaining read with romance, action and excitement. Note: This short fast read can be without reading the other stories in this series.
I enjoyed this story with plenty of action that moved right along especially the exciting finish. I liked the development of the relationship which did go fast because it was a short book and the ending made up for it. Fireman Jeb is asked by fellow captain to watch over his very pregnant wife who has been offered exclusive interview by her friend Nita, the press secretary for a scandalous senator.
I am already excited to read another Bachelor Firefighter book & Ms Bernard usually never disappoints. I was a little disappointed in this one though. I felt that this novella was just as much Melissa's story as it was Jeb and Nita's. For such a short story, surprisingly the content was there for both story lines to co-exist strongly.
Again Jennifer Bernard brings me a man that I can't help but fall for...from the moment we meet him standing on the alter with my "husband" Harry...You fall for Jeb and he just gets better and better!
Short read, but fabulous!! Two people who have a second-chance meeting...and a chemistry that jumps off the pages!
Loved this Novella, and I am on to FOUR WEDDINGS for some Vader action!
First read - 29 to 30 October, 2014 4 stars I enjoyed Nita and Jeb's story. It was short but romantic and sexy. I loved seeing Melissa and Brody!
Second read - 20 May, 2020 DNF I wasn't engaged by this one on a second read. I couldn't remember the characters, and I don't see why it needed to start where it did. That added little value to it overall. DNF.
A quick sexy read that is a perfect afternoon pick me up! As is the entire series, it's well written and connecting with the characters is easy. Jeb and Nita have both known their share of heartache so a fun short fling seems perfect. But sometimes the heart wants more....
Nita and Jeb meet at the Chief and Melissa's wedding. Three years later they meet again during a very unusual interview that Melissa is doing. Sparks fly! Fun story, unusual twists to say the least!
I love this author and her firemen. This is another great read. It's quick fun, engaging, sexy and just overall a wonderful read. I highly recommend all of Jennifer Bernard's firemen!
This was the first firemen book I have read, but it won't be the last. I loved this book and all the characters that Jennifer introduces us to. Real people, and hot sex, made this an awesome read. Thank you, Jennifer Bernard.
