Edward Watts teaches history at the University of California, San Diego, He received his PhD in History from Yale University in 2002. His research interests center on the intellectual and religious history of the Roman Empire and the early Byzantine Empire.

A book about Hypatia in context, about what her life was and why she was important and not just what her death meant, together with a consideration of what use has been made of her life and death since her death. It's not as good as Watts book on the last pagan generation -- there isn't as much material on Hypatia -- but I'm very glad I read it.

This is the first scholarly monograph on Hypatia and her historical and intellectual context since Maria Dzielska's Hypatia of Alexandria came out over 20 years ago. Like any biographer of Hypatia, Watts has to extrapolate from some scanty source material, but his deep understanding of the way late Roman society worked, the importance of interconnected networks of obligation and service and the politics of Alexandria in this period allow him to give insights other historians would likely miss. The way he is able to tease out the available evidence, particularly from the letters of Hypatia's student Synesius, to establish where she fits into the various schools of thought within Neo-Platonism was particularly insightful.

While the book benefits from focusing on what we can know or surmise about her life rather than just focusing on her famous assassination, Watts' analysis of the various sources on her death, their biases and their interdependencies, helps make that critical episode more clear. People who still want to portray Hypatia as a martyr for science/paganism/feminism are unlikely to find much to help them in Watts' account, which puts the mythic figure of Hypatia firmly back into the historical context of the complex and often violent politics of Late Roman Alexandria. Scholarly, careful, balanced and wary of the myths that surround Hypatia, this is likely to be the best resource on her life and significance for many years to come.

الكتاب أكاديمي و لكنه ليس بالضرورة جافا او ليس جافا جدا
يعتمد الكتاب على مصدرين أساسين احدهما وثني و الاخر مسيحي كان على خلاف مع كيرلس بطريرك الإسكندرية و التي تشابهت روايتهما في رؤوس الأقلام و ان اختلفت في تفاصيل صغيرة
مستأنسا بهذين المصدرين يورد إدوارد واتس كل ما له علاقة بهيباتيا بداية من تاريخ مدينتها الإسكندرية القريب و وضعها حينئذ بين حواضر العالم مرورا بأوضاع المدينة الدينية و الاجتماعية و السياسة التي رافقت رحلة هيباتيا الأكاديمية
غير تاركا و لا متجاهلا لاي مصدر يذكر واتس كل المصادر التي أتت على ذكر الفيلسوفة بما فيها المصدر الوحيد -يوحنا النقيوسي- و هو مصدر مسيحي كنسي- الذي أدان الفيلسوفة-لغرض مجاملة كنيسة الإسكندرية و كيرلس و سيرته- و قد ذكر في مصدره انها -اي هيباتيا- كانت تقوم بأعمال سحرية و تستخدم الاسطرلاب و تضرب على الطبل و الطنابير!

لذلك و حسب ما لدينا من مصادر متوفرة ندرك ان هيباتيا -كما نقلت المصادر و تواترت- كانت عالمة من العالم القديم ارادت لمدينتها ان تكون درة و عاصمة الفكر الحر و الحرية في العالم و حرضت تلاميذها و مريدوها على التفكير و التأمل -اما فيما يخص دورها في التعامل مع المراكز الوثنية مثل السييرابيوم و المتحف الخ و الكنيسة السكندرية و لعبها دورا سياسيا و حثها السكان على التعايش و التحمل و التعاضد و ان يتقبل الاخر الوثني الاقلوي الاخر المسيحي الحديث الذي اصبح الأكثر عددا فأمر اجده غير مؤكد و غير معرف حيثياته و خلفياته و جل ما جاء فيه تخمينات و تكهنات من باحثين معاصرين! فالمرأة كانت من النخبة و كانت تدرس الجميع بما فيهم المسيحي بل و حتى المسيحي الذي لديه علاقة مباشرة بالكنيسة و السلك الكنسي و كان لديها علاقات سياسية و اجتماعية متنوعة و على الاغلب انها تورطت كثيرا في امور سياسية بعينيها و لكن ماهية حدوث ذلك و حدوده و تأثيره فليس مؤكدا و لا احد يستطيع الجزم باي شئ بخصوصه- و قد قتل التطرف الديني هذه الفيلسوفة ذائعة الصيت حينئذ بتحريض غير مباشر (او مباشر) من الكهنوت الكنسي و بفعل مباشر من غوغاء و سوقة مسيحيين جددفي شوارع الإسكندرية لتظل قصتها تتردد ما دامت البشرية و البشر أنموذجا قادم من التاريخ بالذي يمكن ان يفعله اي تطرف ديني في دين و دنيا العباد و الناس و كيف يمكن ان يحولهم هذا التطرف لقاتلين مزهقين للأرواح بلا توقف لجزء من الثانية لتدبر ان مبادئ اي دين هو عكس كل ما له علاقة بسفك الدماء و تدمير حياة الآخرين و ان هذا هو الإفساد في الارض بعينه

20730: once again book I do not know if should be named 'feminismlit' or 'philosophy-feminist'. she pre-dates such identity by 1 600 years. and her concerns, concerns of this bio, are not specifically 'feminist'. on the other, how her persona, history, have been deployed seem to be tied to contemporaneous conceptions of women throughout the millennia. had read of her before, had seen the film 'agora'. this is much more complete portrayal of her life and times. this is mostly history and bio. she left no philosophical school. she was certainly well-regarded in her times, as teacher, thinker, public intellectual, counsellor, but we have unfortunately no extant works. her posthumous carer as symbol need not overwhelm her reality. she would have been remarkable in any time...

لم أجد طوال 250 صفحة أي إضافة تُذكر فيما يتعلق "بحياة هيباتيا" أعني أي إضافة على ما قرأته سابقاً ضمن رواية عزازيل!

حتى مع كون الكاتب قد أكد على أن جميع من سبقوه من مؤلفين ركزوا على طريقة موتها وأنه هو بصدد مخالفتهم والتركيز على حياتها لكنه لم يُفلح في ذلك أيضاً.

أكثر ماسترعى انتباهي من الكتاب الفصل الأول "جريمة في موسم الصوم الكبير".. والفصل العاشر الذي كان بعنوان "هيباتيا كرمز حديث" متحدثا عن الأعمال الأدبية المشهورة التي تناولتها في العصر الحديث .. ثم حديثه ختاماً حول الفيلم الذي كان له التأثير الشعبي الأكبر.. Agora 2009.

أيضا آخر فصل بعنوان إعادة النظر في الأسطورة الذي لخص كل ما ذُكر في الكتاب حول هيباتيا في 8 صفحات فقط! 🫠

الكتاب في نظري أشبه بكونه بحثاً أكاديميا على شكل كتاب.

I think I have read every single book ever written about Hypatia. This is one that stands out for me. Edward Watts goes into so much historical detail about Hypatia's philosophy, life and surroundings. As a result, he builds a bridge between our present day and Roman history to show how Hypatia was a profoundly brilliant and compassionate professor. This is a marvelous read!

I read this as research for a presentation about Hypatia I'm doing in a course named Education, school and training. (Which by the way is very intresting.) Therefore, I have to become an expert on this late antique philosopher in a short period of time and so far this book has been the most helpful.

I highly appreciated how Watts focused on the person behind the tragic death by not only including the conflict between two men that brought about her ending but instead concentrating on her life and achievements. Although explaining the external factors that led to this radical political climate at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 5th century CE takes up a lot of time, the spotlight always remains on Hypatia herself and rather than taking focus away from her, it enabled the reader to understand her better.

This way the story still felt triumphant even though it ends tragically.

She was a brilliant and fiercely determined woman whose talent and skill rebalanced Alexandria’s intellectual culture and guided the city’s political life. This was a slim but dense read. It was a bio of Hypatia but it was woven into the history & culture of the times. It starts with the famous murder of Hypatia and then goes back to explain how those tensions occurred and why she might have been targeted by the Christian mob.
Chapter headings include: Childhood and Education, Alexandria, the School of Hypatia, Middle Age, A Philosophical Mother & her Children, The Public Intellectual, Hypatia's Sisters.

Watts also muses on how we remember Hypatia, the symbolism and legend that has grown up around her life & murder.

An insightful, short read though a bit repetitive at times. What can I say? Such a senseless end to a fascinating, accomplished woman. The brazen misogyny of Christian figures mocking Hypatia and her horrific murder, while disgusting, wasn't terribly surprising. Thankfully, I was pleased to see a few prominent male figures have defended Hypatia's honour over the years.

This book takes a scholarly look at the life and times of Hypatia in a way that is pretty easy to digest for the average reader, although there are times when it deepens into a more "scholarly" writing and then comes back again in a more colloquial style. What I really enjoyed was learning about what Alexandria was like at the time Hypatia was born and through her lifetime. The author paints a vivid picture of people from various religions living and working together as well as the class system that was also kept in check by those in power. Reading about Hypatia's impact on the role of the philosopher in Alexandria, her ability to teach without alienating various religions, and her deep love of education was quite moving. The author also expands on the political turmoil that ultimately led to the fringe group who murdered Hypatia, and the outrage felt by most. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of Hypatia, her teachings, and the impact she had on philosophy and even pop culture throughout the ages.

Watts does a good job trying to find the historical Hypatia, but it’s a difficult job. Like so many historians trying to write a biography of an obscure ancient figure, he cobbles together what we know from the handful of sources, spends a lot of time discussing 4th and 5thc Alexandria for background, and tries to look at comparable situations to extrapolate. Yet the historical Hypatia is elusive and Watts cannot always find her. It’s not his fault, but it is sometimes frustrating for the reader. She’s a fascinating woman whose death amidst a polarized world is horrifying, but it’s hard for the author to get much traction, given the paltry source material. At times, I think the book gets too academic for a wide audience, but Watts’ scholarship is a strength, even if he may assume too much for the general reader. In the end, I praise him for the noble effort of trying to rescue Hypatia’s story from being all about her infamous murder, but I’m not sure the effort succeeds.

Learning about Hypatia from Edward Jay Watts’ book Hypatia: The Life and Legend of An Ancient Philosopher means learning about the city of Alexandria 1600 years ago, the people of that place at that time, and the values held within the city at that time.

Each section of the book was fascinating in Watts’ overall effort to get to the root of the unique accomplishments of Hypatia. Along the way, readers gain perspective on what has been said, printed, performed, and passed down over the centuries about Hypatia.

I do not feel this book goes into a “why” scenario on events, and rather, it is a concentrated effort to show the reconsiderations of relevant materials in order to see who Hypatia was as an individual. An eye-opening read, highly recommend!

This is a clear-eyed account of Hypatia's adult life in context of the place and time in which she lived.
It is only 155p--please read. You too may have surprising revelations.

My first revelation is that Hypatia lived to 65y. All the artistic renditions of her picture Hypatia as a young winsome femaie rather than a mature respected philosopher. And so I wonder about the lingering misogny in academia that so many texts continue the portrayal of Socrates with white hair, wrinkles and standing firmly on both feet, but Hypatia is portrayed as youthful and in positions of suprise in tantalizing ways.

Says little much about Hypatia’s life and accomplishments as little is known

An attempt to reconstruct the life and philosophy of Hypatia, relying primarily of her contemporaries. As the Christian radical fanatics despised any teachings from those who didn’t follow their narrow and intolerable teachings - virtually all of her works were destroyed for the glory of Jesus as a vulnerable God who considered him as coming from the same stuff as God rather than a religion, practicing Jewish man.

إن قصة هيباتيا لبعدها التاريخى عنا وقلة المصادر سيظل الغامض منها أكثر كثيرا عن ما وصلنا، وحتى ما وصلنا شابهه كثير من الأضافات التى نتجت عن تأثر كاتبيها بالقصة وما أحاط بها من غموض جعل شخصية هيباتيا اقرب للأسطوره...

وللأسف من أعجبته الأسطورة لا يهتم إلا بخبر موتها الغامض فى اصل خبره، ولا يجد سوى سيرة البابا كيرلس وشخصيته ليضعها اساسا لقصة مزيفه يرفع فوقها صورة هيباتيا فيكمل صورة اسطوريتها المرسومة فى زهنه مسبقا..

اقتنين هذا الكتاب فى معرض القاهرة الدولي للكتاب 2024 بخصم 50٪ وهو كتاب غالى الثمن لكن لم اجد فيه منفعة حتى ما يساوى حتى ربع ثمنه..

So it reads more like a research paper, which is fine for me but some people might not enjoy that. I'm iffy about how he puts out some "facts". Most of the time he does the- Because we read this here, though we don't have actually documentation, we can assume this. But there are other times when he puts something as fact when it is still contested (like her birth year).

Still, it was an enjoyable read. I liked reading more on what Hypatia's life might have been like.

من الواضح أننا لا نمتلك الكثير عن هيباتيا نفسها و حياتها. إذ أن معظم الكتاب يتحدث عن حياة معاصريها و أسلافها و من تبعوها و يذكر القليييل عن هيباتيا نفسها يمكن تلخيصه في صفحتين أو ثلاثة!
مع ذلك، أرى أن قصتها ملهمة إذ كنت منزعجة جدا - كشخص عاشق للفلسفة - أنني لا أجد كتب عن فيلسوفات نساء.
