The collected poetry of one of the country’s best progressive poets and literary critics, the poems in this book are conscious interventions in a class society divided by contradicting social and political interests. They are exemplary as works that stand in unison with the great struggle of the Filipino people for social justice, national liberation, and genuine democracy. Unlike some other works (Miguel Syjuco’s sophomoric Ilustrado, for instance), Guillermo’s poems are not ones that try to create elaborate concoctions about the armed revolution without even seeing a real guerrilla or entering a guerrilla zone.

this slapped me, not very hard though. but it slapped me and maybe gangs like almario, tagging ND's poetics as 'de-kahon.' sure, karit, himagsik, sambayanan, masa and the like abound here a bit but the senior guillermo's poetry is way beyond those. favorites are working clothes, european war, nixon, demonstration, konstruksyon where recurring (dahil they continue to be founded and called-for) propositions -- mag-aklas, kalabanin ang sistema, kalabanin ang mga imperyalista etc -- are given tastier garbs diametrically opposed to the fashion sense of Ang Bayan statements.
