Pope John XXIII

Pope Saint John XXIII (Latin: Ioannes XXIII), born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli reigned from 28 October 1958 to his death in 1963.

He was ordained a priest on 10 August 1904 and served in a number of posts, including papal nuncio in France and a delegate to Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. In a consistory on 12 January 1953 Pope Pius XII made Roncalli a cardinal as the Cardinal-Priest of Santa Prisca in addition to naming him the Patriarch of Venice.

Roncalli was elected pope on 28 October 1958 at age 77 after 11 ballots. His selection was unexpected, and Roncalli himself had come to Rome with a return train ticket to Venice. He was the first pope to take the pontifical name of "John" upon election in more than 500 years, and his choice settled the complicated question of official numbering attached to this papal name due to the antipope of this name.

Pope John XXIII surprised those who expected him to be a caretaker pope by calling the historic Second Vatican Council (1962–65), the first session opening on 11 October 1962. He did not live to see it to completion. John died of stomach cancer on 3 June 1963, four and a half years after his election and two months after the completion of his final and famed encyclical, Pacem in Terris."

He was beatified on 3 September 2000 by Pope John Paul and declared a saint by Pope Francis on 5 July 2013, based on his merits of opening the Second Vatican Council. He was canonised on 27 April 2014. His feast day is 11 October, the day of the first session of the Second Vatican Council.

Pope St. John XXIII reiterates many of the ideas proposed by Pope Leo XIII. Interesting how he brings to light the plight of his family prior to his entering the priesthood and advancing in church office. His family were virtually iterate farmers. In his encyclical he pleads with the world not to overlook agricultural workers as well as encouraging the developing world not to ignore the countries that are still developing (at the time known as Third World). The request for richer countries to help those countries less fortunate as well as the plea for agriculture makes his encyclical special.

It’s worth reading in order to discover the seeds of the second Vatican Council. It’s a shame that this document isn’t more widely read. It gets pretty boring in the middle. It’s a little outdated. But the beginning and the end give really good insights that are timeless.

Good read. Starting to get a better idea of the social teaching of the church & realizing how big of an impact the first encyclicals on this had.

Do you want a short summary of Catholic Social Teaching? Yes? Then this encyclical is very much for you. Are you confused about what the Church preaches regarding social aspects? Then this encyclical for you. Do you think international relationships should have certain boundaries? Then this encyclical for you. . Do you want to dwell on the importance of dialogue, divergence and sticking to the faith principles without renouncing to your presence in the world? Then this encyclical for you.

This is the first long encyclical I have read by John XXIII and it did not disappoint. It was just like a summary of Rerum Novarum, Quadragesimo Anno, and a good Catholic Social Teaching class I had this semester, but it was all worth it, to reflect upon the things I've recently been looking into.

- social conditions at time of "Rerum Novarum": "Enormous riches accumulated in the hands of a few, while large numbers of workingmen found themselves in conditions of ever-increasing hardship. Wages were insufficient even to the point of reaching starvation level, and working conditions were often of such a nature as to be injurious alike to health, morality and religious faith. Especially inhuman were the working conditions to which women and children were sometimes subjected."
