Guide to Stars and Planets

Rate this book
This comprehensive handbook contains charts of the stars in all 88 constellations of the night sky, as well as a concise overview of astronomy presented in nine short chapters. The constellation maps, exquisitely drafted by Wil Tirion, show all stars visible to the naked eye as well as the brighter nebulas and galaxies. Each map has a clear explanation of the more interesting objects in the constellation depicted. The compact format of this book makes it a suitable companion when vacationing, trekking or camping.

Sir Patrick Moore OBE.,CBE, presenter of the longest running t.v. series IN THE WORLD, i.e. 'The Sky at Night', has presented another gem here. Guide to Stars and Planets, first published in 1980, has been revised and expanded many times since. My edition is the 2006 version, and I could well be hearing the great old man tap tapping on his typewriter to produce his 2010 edition. No fault of Sir Patrick's omission, just that the subject matter is accelerating and expanding as fast as the universe itself.
The book has eleven chapters of basic easily understood topics from an introduction to Astronomy, The Sun, The Moon, The Planets, The Stars, The Galaxies etc. The book is very easily read and gets better as it moves along. My favourite section is The Constellations that includes both Northern and Southern hemispheres. Each constellation has it's star map which includes deep sky objects and their Dec and RA coordinates. Where applicable even the Greek mythology is included. All in all, so much fundamental astronomical information in this little guide book, of use not just to beginners but more advanced amateurs too.
