Kenzaburō Ōe (大江 健三郎) was a major figure in contemporary Japanese literature. His works, strongly influenced by French and American literature and literary theory, engages with political, social and philosophical issues including nuclear weapons, social non-conformism and existentialism.

Ōe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1994 for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today."

Handenvol vervreemding worden de lezer vanaf de eerste bladzijden toegeworpen - meer dan ik persoonlijk herken. Het Franse existentialisme is een soort gezellig keuvelend theekransje, in vergelijking met de diepe ontworteling waarvan dit boek doordesemd is. Benieuwd of al Ōe's werken zo desperaat zijn, maar voor mij is dit iets te veel van het goede.

3人の学生とアメリカ人との共同生活と夢...「黄金の青春時代」を経て、夢破れ挫折を経験しそれぞれの運命は悲劇的に訪れる。現実と非現実の倒錯、日常と非日常の幻想、「希望」にすがりつつも狂気の深淵へと落ちて行く若者の生き様が書かれてある。文体は極めてスタイリッシュであり、聡明な印象を受けた。大健の作品の中ではライトタッチであり、読みやすく面白い。相変わらずグロテスクに変わりは無いが、若干薄め。
