Can You Survive In A Storm — In The Past, In The Present... Or In The Future ?

Your parents are away for the weekend, leaving you home alone for the first time. You're so excited, you don't know what to do first. You decide to take the family boat out on Lake Champlain and visit nearby Providence Island with your friend Jayme. You are more than halfway there when a fierce storm suddenly kicks up. The boat is taking in water fast. Soon you can no longer make out the dock ahead of you, or see the island shoreline. What will you do?

If you decide to turn around and go back, turn to page 82. If you decide to try to make it to the island, turn to page 33. But be careful! You could find yourself stranded on the island, in a strange time warp that might leave you trapped in the past or in the distant future. Or you could solve the mystery of the Indian burial grounds, and enjoy the secrets of eternal life!

What happens next in the story? It all depends on the choices you make. How does the story end? Only you can find out! And the best part is that you can keep reading and rereading until you've had not one but many incredibly daring experiences!

I've enjoyed Choose Your Own Adventure type books for many years now, and this one is quite possibly the first to consistently disappoint. The mixture of modern day with future and past can be used to good effect, but not here. Every story line seemed to proceed randomly, taking the fun out of "choosing" your adventure, as your choices don't really correlate with results. Worse, making wise, pertinent, or responsible choices generally results in quick boring ends to the story, while being reckless or irresponsible is rewarded. This is a bit of a break from the books I'm used to, where being foolish gets you a quick and often gruesome end. For a book marketed toward young people, it encourages some very poor decision making. It is my hope that this book is a rare exception in an otherwise good series.

On an unrelated note, the advertisement for eBook versions inside the back cover strikes me as a good idea. This type of book could benefit from digitization in ways few others can. I am saddened that it was only available through Apple brand products, though perhaps in the 5 years since my copy was published, they have had the good sense to make it cross platform.

I'll rate The Island of Time one and a half stars. The plot is eccentric but interesting, very much an R.A. Montgomery creation. The reading experience was fun.

Choose your own adventure…fun book for a kid but not much depth to it.

Our oldest has really enjoyed reading books with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" format. At our local library we've discovered some of the books from the original Choose Your Own Adventure series that I read when I was a child. I remember loving books like this in my childhood and I am excited that our girls are discovering them as well.

This book features an exciting trip to Providence Island on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Many of the paths took us on a sci-fi journey that we could hardly imagine, but the stories were dramatic and exciting.

Overall, these are entertaining, though sometimes violent stories. I tend to prefer the "You Choose" series because they have an educational and historical context, but the books in this series are interesting, too. We enjoyed reading this book together.

Once again I picked up a few CYOA books to see if I could read them to my class before rest time... unfortunately I just don't think I ever will!

Like the other one I read, some of the endings were really random and sudden. But for the most part, it was an okay book.

I have not read a Choose Your Own Adventure book since I was a kid. This book has 19 different endings. I have read 4 of them so far.
