Kotter, world-renowned expert on leadership, is the author of many books, including Leading Change, Our Iceberg is Melting, The Heart of Change, and his latest book, That's Not How We Do It Here!. He is the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School, and a graduate of MIT and Harvard. He is co-founder of Kotter International, a change management and strategy execution firm that helps organizations engage employees in a movement to drive change and reach sustainable results. He and his wife Nancy live in Boston, Massachusetts.

I actually cried reading this book, because I was amazed by this man, by Konosuke Matsushita. The way he was doing things, and his attitude towards the employees... If I lived at the time he was building the company, and if I had a chance to become a part of it, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment.

A great read about one of Japan's industrial and institutional leader, Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic. He had only 4 years of schooling but he was economically independent already when he was 17. The main concern of this book is to convey why his legacy was quite unusual in terms of management and what made his company so successful? It was because everytime his company came out with a new product with an advanced technology, the initial inspiration was not about making a big profit out of it, but about serving society by making those products affordable.

K.M. a avut o viață incredibilă cu mari greutăți, dar reușite și mai spectaculose. Principiile care l-au ajutat pe Matsushita în viață sunt fundamentale pentru antreprenori.
Consider că este o carte care merită citită de orice om de afaceri, indiferent la nivelul la care se află.

Коносуке Мацушіта (Kōnosuke Matsushita) - та людина, яку б на зарашній манір можна було назвати "селфмейд мен", який виплекав Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd, що на
сьогоднішній день відома як Panasonic — найбільша японська і одна з провідних світових виробників електроніки.

До слова: я неймовірно захоплююсь людьми, які (хочуть жити) мають волю, ген "а давай спробую" і бажання продовжувати думати, розвиватись, вчитись, і рухатись вперед, при цьому не стаючи зазнатою звіздою.

Мацушіті вкрай не повезло - будучи 4х річним малюком він, разом із всією сімєю роззорюється і залишається на вулиці (батько Мацушіти вирішив пограти на біржі, заставляючи все більше майна допоки - не залишилось нічого). в 9ть років він починає першу роботу в магазині (так і не закінчивши навчання) з продажів велосипедів, звідки невдовзі втікає за допомогою брехні, щоб спробувати влаштуватись в на той час стрімко розвиваючійся сфері електрики і до 30ти - втрачає всіх рідних, проживає велику депресію, другу світову і колосальні труднощі в Японії і бізнесі який він веде - опісля.

Мабуть, якби Коносуке мав "сімейний парашут" де б міг легко приземлитись і зализати рани після невдач він би склав руки, опустив голову і смиренно прийняв ті удари, які траплялись в його житті як "знак". Але те, що виділяє його поміж іншим- це неприйняття поразки, бажання рухатись далі, віра в людей, цінності і ціль і мета побудови кращого суспільства, створення блага не лише для себе - але й для Японії.

Незважаючи на відсутність стандартної освіти Мацушіта вчився самостійно, залишаюсь відкритим до ідей і думок інших протягом усього свого життя, адже в оточенні, яке постійно міняється навчання і самоудосконалення допомагає досягти більшого, ніж просто наявність певного рівня IQ, соціального статусу батьків, харизми чи штампу освіти.

До слова про початки - бізнес і виробництво Мацушіти почалось з вироблення патронного штепселя в зйомному помешканні Мацушіти, загальна площа якого становила 12мкв, бізнесменами-співзасновниками, у жодного з яких не було середньої освіти. Тому, - навіть якщо у вас маленька фінансова спроможність, навіть якщо у вас невеликі знання = якщо у вас є мотивація, розуміння шляху підприємництва як пригоди, якщо ви поставите для себе правильні цілі і цінності, і навчитесь мотивувати і запалювати людей навколо у вас може все вийти. А може й не вийти, - головне виносити для себе висновки(вчитись на досвіді), знову вставати на ніжки і продовжувати рухатись далі...аж до останнього подиху.

- ввічливість та смиренність
- гармонія із законами природи
- подяка за благословення

Такий специфічний зміст покликання та принципів, а не лише їхнє існування, допомогли отримати натхненну відповідь - коли покликання в першу чергу подолати бідність і служити людям - це надихає людей, дає їм можливість відчути, що вони частина чогось набагато більшого і вагомішого, аніж просто кеш.

Amazing life story from an amazing man
Very well written, the author highlighting the most value aspects of his achievements. Some good learnings:

He did what all great leaders do - motivate large groups of individuals to improve human condition.

Youth means the temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a bit of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting or ideals.

"... No matter what kind of job you have, you should think of yourself as being completely in charge of and responsible for your work, like being the president of your own company. By doing so, not only can appropriate devices be made and new discoveries be born, you will also greatly assist your own self-development"

"Never forget that every single person you meet is your customer"

มัตสึชิตะ เป็นคนหัวแหวกขนบดั้งเดิม และไม่พอใจกับการตกอยู่ใน comfort zone นั่นอาจจะเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้เขายิ่งใหญ่ เพราะถ้าทำเหมือนๆกับที่คนอื่นทำแล้วใช้ข้ออ้างว่าก็คนยุคก่อนเขาก็ทำกันมาแบบนี้ คงไม่เกิดความแตกต่างจนพลิกฟื้นเศรษฐกิจจากเถ้าถ่านหลังแพ้สงครามโลกได้ ชีวิตวัยเด็กค่อนข้างไปในทางโศกนาฏกรรม พ่อเล่นลงทุนตลาดล่วงหน้าจนต้องขายบ้าน ที่นา ต้องไปอาศัยในสลัม ป่วยออดๆแอดๆตั้งแต่เด็ก ต้องทำงานเป็นเด็กฝึกงานร้านจักรยานตั้งแต่ 9 ขวบ พี่น้องทยอยตายจากไปก่อนวัยอันควร เมื่ออายุได้ 30 ปี ครอบครัว 10 ชีวิตเหลือเขาเพียงคนเดียว เป็นที่น่าเสียดายที่ครอบครัวไม่ได้เห็นความยิ่งใหญ่ของ Panasonic และการพลิกฟื้นตระกูลจากติดลบสู่ความรุ่งโรจน์ของน้องชายคนเล็กคนนี้ แม้ผ่านโศกนาฏกรรม แต่กลับเป็นคนมองโลกแง่ดี และเชื่อมั่นในพลังความสามารถของทรัพยากรบุคคล แต่การที่เป็นคน active ตลอดเวลา ไอเดียโลดแล่น ส่งผลเสียต่อสุขภาพจนเป็นโรคนอนไม่หลับ ถือเป็นชีวิตคนๆหนึ่งที่เราสามารถคัดสรรเอาข้อดีของเขามาประยุกต์ใช้ได้แม้ในยุคปัจจุบัน

It's very difficult to rate this book, as 5 stars is not enough. MK has been forced by his father to learn how to work, starting with polishing and the journey towards entrepreneurship was long (years) and what he keeps promoting is his curiosity, attention, risk taking, focused on improving his relationship with customers, his employees, his business artners and adapting to the harsh times. His model was also on avoiding arrogance and helping himself and others, instead of money-focused.

Yes, he was an opportunistic person, using his curiosity to grow himself and others. And yes, there were different times. Would following a similar path work nowadays? Yes, only with hard work and never giving up, like MK did.

I'm glad I discovered Matsushita through this book and I will look to read at least his autobiography, but the book feels very light weighed (at least compared with other business biographies I've read). It didn't left me with the feeling that once I finished the book I know and understand the person, but that I've read a summary and now I need to search for the real book.

PS. I've read the book translated, and it's very possible the translation also helped in a negative way to my opinion.

This book contains stories of immense hardships that cultivated an impressive leader and businessman. It is inspiring although it is clear that Matsushita suffered a great deal. The main lesson of this book is to be humble, with an open mind, optimistic, and view people as inherently good, and empower them (theory Y).

Ничего не знала про Мацуситу, очень познавательная и мудрая книга об истории человека и страны через призму построения компании. В 50-60 Мацусито уже использовал в работе те методы, которые некоторые компании только узнали в 2000-х. Много инсайтов. Теперь совсем по-другому буду относится к панасонику :)

I have read many biographies and autobiographies of great leaders in many fields. I read 3 books written by Konosuke Matsushita by himself - 指導者の条件, 道をひらく, 続・道をひらく. However, this one written by John Kotter, professor at Harvard Business School about Konosuke Matushita, the founder of Matsushita Electric Inc., now Panasonic, is remarkable.

Matsushita was age 56 in 1951 when he declared to go global despite hardships after everything was lost in WWII. After retiring, at age 84, he founded Matsushita School of Governance and Management (松下政経塾). He was a continuous learner, humble challenger until the moment he died at age 94.

This story gives me courage to venture out at any age. His favorite poem begins "Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind..."

One of the best books on leadership through hardships.

Matsushita a great man belonged to a mediocre family, his father lost his fortune when KM was just 9, in speculating rice commodities.
At the age of 9, KM worked so hard, took the risk to quit his bicycle shop kob, Joined an Electric company, submitted his proposal for a new product to his boos but was taken aback.

With full of emotions quit his secure job, started his own company and with good strategies grew his company to new heights.

What a man. Do recommend this book to everyone. Worth reading.
