Thank you to author Jennifer Quintenz for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Incubus is the second book in Jennifer Quintenz’s Daughters of Lilith series and is quite possibly even better than the first book! The stakes are higher and there’s a new danger to face as Braedyn and the Guard continue their fight against the Lillith in another exciting read by Quintenz!

I have to say I really enjoyed Incubus; possibly even more than the first book! With Quintenz’s world already established and the characters well known by now, I was thrilled with how the story is progressing and the developments that have come to light in this book. Sometimes sequels don’t live up to their predecessors; however Incubus manages to stand exceptionally well on its own two feet with its own individual story that still manages to feature an ongoing storyline from the previous book.

As with the previous book in this series, Incubus was very well written and author Jennifer Quintenz manages to pack a lot of action and surprises into the story. The tale is well written and the characters compliment each other beautifully. The introduction of some new characters to that story shake the foundation, but Quintenz explores them expertly; managing to include many unexpected developments.

Braedyn continues to grow and strengthen in her fight against the Lilitu, making some bad choices along the way that may affect not only those around her, but possibly the whole world. Personally I like Braedyn and I like seeing her face things head on. Admittedly she makes some tough choices in this book, some of which have horrendous results, but she’s learning and you can’t fault her desire to do the right thing.

Braedyn’s relationship with Lucas continues to be a focal point within the story considering they are still unable to act on their feeling without Lucas being tremendously hurt, or worse, killed. Quintenz continues to showcase a great relationship between Braedyn and her father Murphy and I’m even quite a fan of the unexpected friendship/alliance Braedyn has formed with Karayan—this was not something expected after her actions in the previous book, but Quintenz is beginning to depict a different side to Karayan that makes me wonder just how evil she really is.

Shocking betrayals and unexpected revelations see Incubus end with an unforeseen cliff-hanger that readers will simply not expect but will leave them raring to dive into the third instalment as soon as they’re physically able!

Book two in the series was...disappointing.

Braedyn was stubborn, hard-headed, disloyal and a whole slew of other adjectives that really annoyed me. In fact, I'm highly disappointed in Lucas's frame of mind at the end of the book. I thought Braedyn was also completely, and more frustratingly, willfully oblivious to things.

Fortunately, there were a few interesting developments in this book, so I do still think reading #3 is worth it - I'm hoping so, anyway.

The only inconsistency/oversight I found was regarding Cassie and Parker; in the previous book I thought Parker's friends were hiding in the bathroom listening in. In this book, it states that he recorded what happened. This may just be a changing of the facts to fit the plot for this book. In either case, it's a bit disheartening that the author and/or editor didn't catch this.

UPDATE:
It has been more than a year since I first read Incubus. Now that I also have Sacrifice and Guardian, I decided to reread the first two books as well.

I must admit, I was not as happy-go-lucky as the first time I read it. But it does not mean it was not a good experience the second time around.

So how was reading it the second time different?

Which book did I like better? I definitely like Thrall better. It was a bit better rounded and I enjoyed some characters, Braedyn mainly, more. Incubus has one problem for me, the first three quarters feel like a filler, because once again we are waiting for the winter solstice. I think this did not bother me the first time around because I did not know it was going to happen, but it was more obvious during the reread.

The cover? I stand by the fact that Incubus has on of the most beautiful covers ever.

The story? As stated before, the majority of the book felt like filler, even though it did drop imporant hints along the way. And it is not like you could cut it and it would not make a difference. It just felt a little choppy.

The characters? Similar feelings as on the first read. Braedyns silly mistakes did grate on me a little more. But it is only characters we care about that can stir such feelings in us. And I still enjoy her general character a fair bit.

The score? I would now give it 4, rather than 5, stars, but I will not change the rating, as the series itself ranks 5 stars for me.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Jennifer Quintenz why do you do this to me? Sleep is good for people, I speak from experience. But somehow your works always have me telling off sleep until I am ready to collapse. It was not a good idea to go to bed 4.30 AM, when I had wake up at 7AM…

So after reading to the early hours of the morning I have now finished “Incubus”. I admit it might not have been nice of me to wake up my visiting sister at 4AM with a loud shout of: “I knew it! I didn’t know it, but damn it, I knew it.” For people who have read the book, this was the moment when I found out who the incubus was. You get it.

Okay, must calm down.

So, as a sequel to a brilliant opening to the series “Daughters of Lilith”, how did the second book hold up? While reading I kept going back and forth. One time I was almost sure that “Thrall” was better and nothing will ever beat it, but other times I was swearing up and down how “Incubus” must be the single best thing I have ever read. So to sum up, they are both great and make for one hell of a series (especially if you read them back-to-back).

Something I also want to mention is that the cover of “Incubus” IS the single most prettiest and shiniest thing I have ever laid eyes on. The wings, the girl, the sword. Something about it captures this story so perfectly. Just wanted to mention that.

On to the story. I was a little surprised when very early on in the book it became clear that the final battle of all evil is drawing near. I couldn’t help but think that “come on, they just got rid of one, give them a breather”. Which I guess is the point. They do not get a break and if not anything else then the constant now-or-never kept me on the edge of my seat.
The story was paced a tad slower, compared to “Thrall” in which it was BAM – BOOM – BAMBOOM. Which is what I liked about “Thrall” but that is not to say that “Incubus” was too slow. It was still great. I also liked the more human side-story of the battle with Amber. I know, I am too old to care about high-school drama but I have never wanted to punch a book-character in the face so bad before. That was some brilliant writing right there.
If I could wish for one thing then it would be to see Braedyn relapse for a moment. I want to see her give in to the temptation and go Lilitu on everyone’s ass. She made many mistakes in "Incubus" but at one moment I found myself wishing that it wasn't all an accident. In "Thrall" she attacked Parker very intentionally. I wanted something like that but worse.

Braedyn is one thing I liked more in the first book. Because she developed so much in the course of “Thrall”. Here she did make progress but it was a lot more subtle and as I said, what I wanted to see was the giving in.
If I would have the chance, I would just stare at Lucas with suspicion and ask: „After all you have been through, you are still so trusting?” I could not decide if his never-ending faith in Braedyn was sweet or annoying. I think I will go with sweet. So sweet I feel like I'm getting diabetes.
The book did introduce a few new characters. But not overly much. The most influential of them was Seth. I was torn when it came to him. I will not tell you how it turned out, you have to find out yourself.
As for the incubus himself… I changed my mind a million times about who he was. That kind of thing is really hard not to give away. I was dead-set on one guy and then something happened. But then I doubted myself and it was back to the first guy. Thus the “I didn’t know it but I knew it” part.

Long story short, I loved the “Incubus”. Jenn Q, thanks so much for sending me the copy. I am so happy to give another one of your books five stars and cannot wait to get my hands on “Sacrifice.” (To the skeptics out there, this review is my fair and true opinion, I won’t sell my soul for free books quite just yet).

Absolutely Captivating!
An exciting, page-turner! ^_^

+The storyline is as solid as it was in the first book. I didn't find myself wondering what was for dinner, or what was on T.V while reading Incubus. I was right there with Braedyn trying to figure out who this mysterious, evil Incubus was. What I thought was pretty great was that Jennifer didn't really let us know for a guarantee who the lowlife was. I had around 4 different bets on who it could be from Mr. Hart to helpless Seth. She kept the secret locked up until the end and I'm glad she did.

+The enemy in this series had always been Lilitu but what made this different from Thrall was that this time around, the enemy was completely unknown. In Lilitu history, there had only been one other known Incubus and there was very little known about him, which made this guy new uncharted, evil territory. I'm not saying the guys evil was lacking, not at all, in fact he was everywhere messing with Braedyn's head. Almost literally too. He was kind of a creeper in my opinion.

+Braedyn was one of those characters that I think I would get along with. Head strong and full of purpose. She may not want to be a daughter of Lilith, and she may end up sacrificing her only chance of ever being fully human, but that wont stop her from harnessing her powers to protect those she love, including super sweet Lucas. Her only downfall is that she rushes into action without thinking. She really needs to learn to sit in one place and think things out.

+This book is an absolute MUST read! You have strong characters, teenagers who are amazing in their normality in a paranormal life, and a father who would die for his adopted daughter, and an adopted daughter who is “supposed” to be evil but is the most caring teen I have seen in years. This book is not only a successful sequel but an incredible addition to any library. Jennifer Quintenz is a special writer who can be very riveting.

+Quintenz gives this story depth with Braedyn's moral dilemma and characters struggling with conflicting desires and allegiances. It’s awesome. If anything this story just begs to be read. It’s combines some great fantasy elements with everyday struggles of a teenager. It’s also carries over so much emotion that you feel invested in the characters. It’s makes me feel so sad about that ending and how I need the next book already. Incubus is a successful sequel that really took me for a wild ride. Strong and entertaining, Incubus is fantastic.

+I recommend the entire series for the fully developed characters, the impressive mythology, and the fight scenes. I wasn't disappointed in the least but I am dreading waiting for the next book. And luckily i'm currently reading the last book.

:)

+I recommend this book highly!!!

5 solid stars! Is there an option for 6?

So since the first book blew me away, I knew I had to read the sequel. At first, the story seems fine. Then I hit the last few chapters.

Mind Blown!

Plot: If you have not read the first book, I strongly suggest you do. This story carries over with what happened in the first book. It’s action packed, lots of great plot twists and turns. Nothing is ever boring nor confusing. I fell right back into the story as if I never left. It’s just really awesome.

Love: This love is soo complicated. And no, it has nothing to do with another guy. It’s just the situation that their in. Braedyn has to watch her back for everything. They can never have any small amount of peace for fear that Braedyn might hurt someone. It’s like it within her reach yet soooo far away. And because of this, it leaves Braedyn desperate for a change…

Ending: Braedyn struggling in who she is and what she wants really takes over this story. I felt her emotions just charging at taking that chance of life that she never thought she get. And then when it all slipped out of her hands…NOOOOOOOOO! Ugh. Heart broken. The ending really did a number on me. Not only in my head but my heart. What just happened here? And why didn’t I see that coming???

It’s awesome. If anything this story just begs to be read. It’s combines some great fantasy elements with everyday struggles of a teenager. It’s also carries over so much emotion that you feel invested in the characters. It’s makes me feel so sad about that ending and how I need the next book already. Incubus is a successful sequel that really took me for a wild ride. Strong and entertaining, Incubus is fantastic.

One of the best books I have ever read!

When I started reading this book I couldn't stop reading it. I read this book the whole day. :D It was fun to read. It have everything in it, romance, drama, mystery, fantasy, and it will be a great book for teens. I love the character-most of them. If I would have to pick my favorite character it would maybe Lucas. I don't know. I love the character and I can't choose one. :D

I think people should read this book. But you have to read the first book because this book have three books to it. This is the second one. But the first is good too. I can't wait to read the third book. :) I love the author 'Jennifer Quintenz.' She is a good author. She make great books. I think you will like her books.

I hope you read this book. But remember to read the first book, then the second book. And then read the third book. ;)

Incubus was an amazing book and I enjoyed every chapter, page and word of it. After I read the first book of the series Daughters of lilith, I didn’t think that the second could be any better. It was! It really was.

The plot was good, and the events that take place are really unexpected. I think it was great, because I was shocked and really just wanted to die at the same time. The thing I love about the work of Jennifer Quintenz is that she manages to make the characters so real that you find yourself feeling like the character. Their sadness is yours, their love, their guilt, everything.

What I liked most about this book was that it was so original, it was nothing like any other book I ever read and you literally hang onto every word written in it.

What I disliked most was that Quintenz neglected the relationship of Braedyn and Lucas in this book. There wasn’t a lot of focus on their relationship anymore, I think if the writer wrote more about how Braedyn’s decisions affected their relationship it would have made everything a bit more realistic.

I rate this book 5 out of 5. This book was professionally edited as I found very little grammar mistakes. I would definitely recommend this book to people who love fantasy, especially about angels and demons. I would not recommend this to people who dislike fantasy and romance.

I was nervous at first to read this because many series like to spend the first chapter recapping what happened in the last book. Instead, the author does great with getting to the point and hitting the main spots. It’s very much a second book and you may be lost if you don’t read the first one first.

Any way, I kind of figured out who the incubus was but the writing is super good so you don’t want to believe it! The first part was a little slow and there was a lot of relationship stuff that sucked, also because it was so well written and you don’t want the main characters to break up. So it keeps you reading but it was slow.

Part of me through out the book kept questioning Braedyn, as in what she was really thinking! I don’t know if she’s allowing herself to be so blinded by love that she doesn’t listen or what! That parts kind of annoying.

At the end, I was almost confused and the author does a great job keeping you thinking that you know who is what and then it’s like ah shit that’s not him, really?? Then my suspicions were confirmed and I was upset, f that guy!

The end of the book pushes you to read book three because now I have to know wtf happens! After all, she started the war! Is this in the plans though or is she going rogue? I can’t tell yet!

Book two opens around nine months after the events of book one came to a close; an immediate sense of dejavu being set off by the mentioning of winter solstice. Despite the instinctual ways in which Braedyn and Lucas stood in the face of danger and ran to the fight instead of from it, their inclinations to protect the innocent and those they love, have left their mark; most typically in the dreams that plague them. Lucky for Lucas, and Braedyn too, she has a power over the dreamscape, not that this is sufficient to forego all effects.

Royal and Cassie remain part of the school group. Royal is unchanged, his natural wit and personality bringing that slapstick humour to the storyline. His fierce doggedness to defend his friends still obvious. Cassie remains changed by the abuse experienced at Parker's malicious hands. Still severely impacted nearly a year later, she's a much reserved shadow of her former self.

Its not long before once again Braedyn and Lucas are embroiled, the new attack committed by a female in thrall does however, have significant potential ramifications. Given in book one we learned that becoming thrall was based on desire and that the local Guard could not recall a male lilitu, it logically follows that this new attack was either a thrall who is gay, or that there is such a thing as male lilitu; its just they're known by another name, this book's namesake, Incubus.

However, its not too long before we're reminded that some of the more hateful behaviours possible, are at the hands of humans. As Amber uses her friends to begin a tirade of harm against Braedyn, having stated at the end of book two that she knew the big secret, and would do all within her power to make Braedyn leave, its Braedyn's friends that will bare the brunt of this attention. Without the possibility of a repeat of last year's behaviours that resulted in Parker's near suicide, there's little Braedyn can think of to protect those dearest.

With Braedyn's dreamscape already showing signs of when she's crossed the line, and the angel Sensanoy's warning of only so much able to be overlooked, before Braedyn would no longer be eligible for heaven's boon, the lessons of the day could be more far reaching than she knows. Amber's vengeance on Braedyn's friends coupled with pressure applied from denizens, enough to bring to breaking point, both Braedyn's resolve and her relationships with those she loves.

The boon and ways by which Braedyn and Lucas might be able to see it to fruition become a central focal point for the two young teens. Having now shared the knowledge of its potential, the Puerto Escondido Guard start to see the ways in which Braedyn is used are never more important. Her father of course, as he's done all along, would be happy to see her monopolise the boon immediately. The other leaders however, seeing it as the loss of a weapon she was bred to be, are more than happy to go along with the plans to await some victory first. Lucas and Murphy continue to be Braedyn's staunchest allies.

With the introduction of a new archivist, the possibility of an incubus, and supporting evidence found of a ritual to close the veil between the lilitu army and their world, another young compatriot is introduced whom the teens can begin to trust. As these factors and the continued stress of Guard responsibilities require greater commitments, Braedyn finds it progressively more difficult to keep her human life and friendships alive.

As death visits the Guard again, temptations to break the accord and to further use her abilities strengthen, with only the hope of becoming human and Braedyn's ideals being the dam to keep the flow at bay. Signs of a being in the shadows and the return of Karayan all furthering the pressure Braedyn is under. Escaping to the dreamscape to have any kind of intimacy with Lucas starting to be perceived as muted and insufficient. Its only a matter of time before cracks appear and the dam looks to fall.

As the various aspects of the plot play out, the situations where Braedyn lengthens the lies, by omission if nothing more, climb in frequency. The remoteness brought about from hiding truths from those close to her work to create greater distances between her and her loved ones. That Braedyn believes the reasoning for doing so is sound, and that as her goals compliment other's desires and needs, inconsequential in the trusts that are broken.

Sometimes, being sorry and trying to do the right things aren't sufficient to forego the damages caused by actions. As Braedyn steps forth, believing her reasoning sound, despite the efforts by the many who love her to shield her from the things she might do, betrayal deepens. Readers will see perhaps what Braedyn sees, or perhaps what her loved ones see, but either way the costs will still be thick and their effects irredeemable; regardless of why they're there.

Jennifer's writing is captivating, deep and meaningful. Entertainment around every corner, the world fall of cracks and fissures, where knowledge and consequences run hand-in-hand. Cross genre storylines and a broad range of culture and lore all working well to make her stories an experience, more than just a story; the true tell of an exceptional writer, regardless of the genre. If you weren't hooked before, by Thrall alone, Incubus ensures you'll diarise the rest of the books to come.

If you haven't yet read book one of this series, Thrall (Daughters of Lilith), STOP HERE and go read that book first. This series builds each book upon the foundation of the prior book, which means that this review contains spoilers for the first book in the series.

Braedyn Murphy used to think nothing important ever happened in her sleepy town of Puerto Escondido. But that was before she learned she was a descendent of Lilith, the mother of all demons. Now Braedyn fights to protect humanity from the Lilitu - the beautiful, souls-stealing daughters of Lilith.

As she fights the Lilitu, Braedyn must also fight her growing love for her boyfriend Lucas - because even a simple kiss could end his life. Their only ray of hope is an angel’s offer to make Braedyn human, but it’s an offer she can’t accept until the world is safe from the Lilitu.

Braedyn knows she’s a key player in this ancient war... but she’s not ready to believe she just might be humanity’s best hope of surviving the final battle for Earth.

I must begin by saying how incredibly grateful I am that I was able to jump straight from Thrall into this second installment of the series. Waiting would have been sheer torture. As it stands, having to wait several more days for Sacrifice to be released is painful enough. Ms. Quinletz's characters leap off the page and into your heart, leaving you completely invested in what happens for them next.

Learning that she is 'the enemy' is bad enough, but learning that she could kill the boy she loves with a single kiss is torture. Ah to be a teenager, where all your priorities are in order and everything you do is for the greater good. While I write that tongue in cheek, I must admit that Braedyn tries her hardest to put the whole world ahead of her own desires.

Although the big bad from the first book has been out of the picture, it certainly doesn't take long for trouble to come a'knocking again. Within days both Braedyn and Lucas are attacked by a female thrall, something that has been mentioned in Guard legends, but until now had only ever been legend. Which means there is a male Lilitu, or incubus, in town. This means everyone is suspect, as all women are now potential thralls.

Trouble continues to dog Braedyn. . . the guard expands locally, bringing in another researcher/historian, who turns out to be the mother of an annoyingly rude, blond kid that Braedyn & Lucas had encountered at the Mission and again later at school when she stopped some seniors from whaling on him. Both times he's rude and ungrateful, though he warms up a bit by the end of their second encounter. When he and his mom first arrive at the Guard house Seth appears to be terribly embarrassed and eventually makes things right by apologizing and being self-deprecating in a humorous manner. Eventually Seth joins their small group of friends, which he seems happy to do since prior to moving to Puerto Escondido he'd never met anyone else his age that knew about the Lilitu. Just like Lucas before he moved in next to Braedyn. . . Meanwhile Amber continues to orchestrate attacks on Braedyn's friends as part of her campaign to get her to leave Coronado Prep.

The incubus breaks in to Braedyn's dream space somehow, without alerting her to it when he does it. She only discovers it when a message for her is left with Cassie, a message depicting a rose from Braedyn's dream space, a flower no one should ever have been able to see. Luckily Karayan, the other Lilitu raised by a Guard member, steps back into the ring to assist Braedyn. Despite Karayan's mentoring the incubus continues to plague Braedyn's personal dream space.

Now that Braedyn has come to accept what she is, and has turned 17, she is beginning to really test her boundaries, just like any normal teenager. The trouble is, she has abilities that allow her to cause more problems than solve them, and is at that age where she thinks she is always right. This is compounded by the adults trying to keep the younger generation as protected as possible, leading them to exclude Braedyn, Lucas, and Seth from some of the more crucial details. Information that could easily alter the outcome of the book.

Thankfully this sequel certainly doesn't suffer from the second-book issues that can often plaque a trilogy or series. There is more foreshadowing in this book (or at least that I noticed), which was a bit heavy-handed to me, as it gives away some answers well before they are officially revealed. Regardless, I immensely enjoyed this book and am eagerly awaiting the third installment in this series. The blend of fantasy, mythology and everyday teenage angst is expertly done, almost as if Ms. Quinletz is recounting her own adolescence (though I certainly hope that's not the case)! I strongly advise ignoring the YA labeling, as this book speaks clearly and concisely on multiple levels. You can be in your 80's and still find this author's work to be fresh and entertaining for all audiences.

Incubus is the exciting sequel to Thrall (Duaghters of Lillith #1) and carried on just where we left off.
Following the events of Thrall, Braedyn is given a glimmer of hope by an angel, if she can keep herself from doing wrong, there is a chance she can be made human. This is great news for Braedyn and also for her loved ones, giving hope that she can be with Lucas properly, never guarding her love for him, being able to kiss him, have a normal life with him but at the minute Braedyn knows she is needed in her Lilitu form to give the Guard the upper hand in the war that’s brewing. During a field trip in which Braedyn and Lucas are attacked by a Thrall, they uncover some symbols similar to that which adorns the guards weaponry and when they take this news to the Guards, realise it is a huge discovery but as they look into it they discover that there is more to it than meets the eye and a could infact end the war before it starts - giving hope to all involved and none more so than Braedyn because if there is no war, then there is no need for her to stay a Lilitu…. They do discover that the Thrall that attacked them was female and as such could only come from one source…. The rare and elusive Incubus, so when the threats become more apparent, Braedyn is faced with a tough choice which might just lose her everyone she loves.
I really enjoyed this book and think it was better than the first now we know what’s happening and about the world of Lilitu. It followed the same vein as book one in respect of the training aspect, we see Braedyn and Lucas train more as they painstakingly prepare for what they know will come to pass. We can see both improve and we see the inner warrior desperate for some escape as Braedyns powers start to manifest. Even though the romance aspect can’t be too full on because of what could happen if Braedyn loses control, there are still some super charged moments between our lovebirds to get the heart racing and they will always have their dreams. I thought that even though Braedyn had made the decision to stay in her current form that when she got that glimpse of hope, she got carried away and became desperate, forsaking what her rational self would have done and risking a lot on a possibility, they do say that the path of evil is paved with good intentions and Braedyn should really heed that…. it remains to be seen what damage she will do to those relationships she has. I liked the introduction of the Incubus, in book one it was all about the Lilitu who are a form of Succubae so it’s a perfectly natural progression to be dealing with the opposite too and even though they are rare, that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. I thought it brought something a bit different to the story and I liked why it was introduced. I thought that the threat was more underhanded this time, quite subtle but sneaky and I liked how misdirection was used. The Guards seem to be banding together because something big is brewing but they can be frustrating in the way they view Braedyn & Lucas and how much information they are allowed which in turn, allows them to make huge mistakes. I won’t say that the story kept me guessing until the end, I knew who it was pretty early on but that did not spoil my enjoyment of the book at all, in fact…. It added to the tension because I could see it coming, I knew what was going to happen and I loved it all. As I said, it was very exciting and filled with secrets, misdirection, hope, faith and a little bit of divine intervention which made for a great read and I will be definitely reading more!.

I read Thrall the first book in the Daughters of Lilith Series some time ago and I remember thinking it was pretty good, so I readily agreed to read the second in the series. I wasn't disappointed, in fact, I was delighted to find a (for me) rare 5 star read. Incubus has everything needed to make a top book - strong, well-drawn characters with real relationships and motivations that tug at our heart-stings; a unique concept; immediate and engaging writing, and a riveting plot with an unexpected twist at the end.

Braedyn is a Lilitu, a succubus demon, but she's not evil. Her father is a member of the Guard that protects human kind from the Lilitu, and Braedyn is on their side. She also has a boyfriend, Lucus that she has to keep her distance from because if she lets her Lilitu side take over when they kiss, she will drain his energy, which is, of course, a complete no no. Braedyn wants to become human so she can have a physical relationship with Lucas and eventually marry and have a family. For a Lilitu that isn't possible; she'd kill him. An angel has told her that she can become human, but she has to not 'cross the line' by using her powers to harm. There's a war coming though, and the Guards will need her powers to help them win it, so her transformation can't happen until the war is over. The Guard are preparing for the final battle when the Lilitu break through into this world from the 'other side'. There's a seal that needs breaking to let them in, but if it can be sealed shut forever, then the war is thwarted and Braedyn can ask the angels to make her human. So the thrust of this story is Braedyn's search to find a way to shut the Seal forever, but those who she would expect to help her are suspicious and Braedyn has to make some hard decisions. It's okay to go against her father's wishes if she's doing it for the right reasons, isn't it? But is it okay to steal a secret from the boy you love, even if you do it so you can have a human life together?

Quintenz gives this story depth with Braedyn's moral dilemma and characters struggling with conflicting desires and allegiances. On top of Braedyn's search for a way to keep the rest of her race from turning up and killing the whole human race, an unknown incubus is roaming the town, enthralling women, hurting Braedyn's friends and threatening her. Only at the end is the full extent of the incubus's deception revealed.

Lucus is a wonderful character, a boy with strong principles and devotion to a cause, and I love how Braedyn's father always stands up for her. His devotion to his daughter and belief in her goodness is inspiring. Seth, the new addition to the Guard, is an interesting character too.

This is a hard book to put down, but it doesn't fall into the trap of being nothing more than a series of fight scenes as some YA books do, nor does it read like a million other YA books as many of them do. The varied pacing gives gentler moments and plenty of rich character development which gel into a very satisfying whole. The end is skilfully executed and though it ties up the themes of this book, it leaves the future open for more in the series. I look forward to the next book.

All up, if you like gutsy fantasy of the urban variety this should definitely be on your 'must read' list. Don't let the YA label put you off either, like all the best YA fiction, this can be enjoyed by adults as well. If you enjoyed Lethal Inheritance, I think you'll enjoy this one too. I give it an unreserved 5 stars.

I received this book free of charge from the author in return for an honest review. I reviewed it on behalf of the Awesome Indies.

I liked this one a bit less than the first one. Here's why:

1. When someone is an ally, they deserve to be treated as an ally.

The Guard still treats Braedyn as a question mark, which is laughable given the events of the first book. She's done everything for them, given up everything for them. For them to ask more is ludicrous. A freaking Angel has given his stamp of approval? What more do you judgmental asshats need?

2. When you don't share info with your team, expect them to make mistakes. See point 1.

The entire sequence of events in this book could have been avoided if they treated her as a respected member of the team. Literally, every single event. If they want her to follow them, they have to give her a reason. "Because I said so" will never be enough. It makes them look like inflexible, douchebag old men.

3. I'm no longer viewing the Guard as the good guys.

This is a big deal. Yes, there are good guys on the Guard. Her dad, Hale (though he really needs to make note of points 1 and 2). But there are also people on the Guard who are literally examples of the very worst humanity has to offer. These people - like Thane - are not good arguments for anyone siding with the Guard to protect humanity. And in fact, given Thane's inexcusable behaviour, if I were Braedyn, I'd probably say "if this is who you are, if this is who you value, then I'm out. Good luck, assholes, but I can't say the world wouldn't be better off without you." This is particularly true when you accept that it is only a matter of time until Amber is on the Guard. She is literally the very worst kind of human being alive. And I'm supposed to root for these guys? Yeah, yeah, they all survived some trauma. Welcome to life. Everyone here has survived their past. Everyone here has shit they are trying to make peace with. That's a fact of life. Having trauma in your past does not give you license to be a horrible human being.

The mythology the author plays on - Adam and Lilith - already makes it a dubious argument. Why do the Sons of Adam deserve to run the world? And they are amazingly cruel. I'm not cheering for them. I'm actually looking for the book to give me a reason to start cheering for the Lilitu, because frankly, Braedyn and Karayan are the two most honestly likable characters in this world. They are caught up as pawns, because both sides want to play them. The Guard is no less guilty of this than the Lilitu... and even worse, the Guard is cruel to them while they do it. They use them, but aside from those moments where they are needed, they are booted from any real discussion about what is happening or the plan.

They deserve what they get.

Ms. Quintenz does a fairly good job reminding us where the first book left off but the recaps were brief and my memory is not as sharp as it used to be, so I floundered around a bit. However it didn't take too long to regain my footing.

I just have one small complaint so I will get it out of the way now before I get to the good stuff. This is about a style choice the author made when she chose to use digits instead of writing out numbers. These numbers referred to seconds, minutes, hours, months, years, feet, yards, miles, costumes, and soldiers. Mostly smaller numbers, under a hundred, but there were several. This didn't throw me out of the story, but I hated seeing a sentence starting with a digit. I guess I am just olde school like that.

There is a new evil threat in this book, it seems as though an Incubus, a rare male version of the Lilitu, has found his way to Puerto Escondido. There is very little known about the Incubus, or his powers, and details from the archivists of the Guard are sketchy since their secret library has been destroyed.

Not only is Braedyn trying to deal with typical, and some not so typical, high school drama. She is also trying to deal with not being allowed to know certain Lilitu history and knowledge the Guard has that affect her future. So Braedyn sets out to discover these things on her own. She is a smart girl but being the Guard’s secret weapon she has the weight of the world on her shoulders.

There is a lot of action in this book and the well executed battle scenes are epic. I enjoyed Braedyn's dream-scape the most, with Ms. Quintenz descriptive prose it was easy to be pulled into the scene. I like the way Braedyn's and Karayan's relationship is developing, I feel like these two can help each other. Meanwhile several other friendships are tested on many levels as the mystery twists and turns. If you love reading fantasy where characters are trying to find out how they fit in the world they live in, I am sure you will enjoy this story.

FYI: This is the second book in The Daughters of Lilith series. I think it is important to have read the first book Thrall, before reading this one. I think it is worth mentioning here that Thrall won Books and Pals 2014 Readers' Choice Award in the YA category.

Format/Typo Issues: No significant editing or formatting issues.

Expectations
I liked the first book in the Daughter of Lilith series a lot, especially the main-character. I expect this book to pick up the story-line from the ending of Thrall, and continue to unravel the mysteries. I really like that the story is based on mythology, so I'm looking forward to reading one!

Review
Alright, I just finished reading Incubus, like two minutes ago. What a great second installment this is.
One of the strengths of this book I found to be the character-development. The main character Braedyn is a strong female, but doesn't always makes the right decision. That happens to all of us right?

There's a constant battle of good and evil within Braedyn which Jennifer Quintenz describes very realistically. Braedyn struggles to do the right thing and has difficulty finding what's right.

Lucas is a very well-written character as well. Lucas is such a good guy with a good heart. He want to help and gets very frustrated when he can't. I love that he has so much confidence in Braedyn, even if she's insecure.
Her two best friends are a bit more in the background then in the first book.
Royal is a great friend and has the tendency to see right trough his friends when something's wrong. Cassie is also a great side-character. She's still slowly healing from being hurt in the past, which adds a realistic feel to her character.

I also think the writing-style needs to be mentioned here. The beautifully written sentences are just a joy to read. Also love the funny comments in the book, mainly made by Braedyn. An example:
Quote:
"You think we'll be fighting again soon?" Dad sat next to me at the island. He studied his hands, trying to keep his voice light. "It's possible."
"Possible like it's possible we'll go for ice cream today - or possible like it's possible there are aliens living on Mars and we don't know it because they're just really good at hiding?"

The plot twists were amazing!! I really didn't see any of them coming at all.
I liked that the possibilities made me think about what might happen, but the twists were beyond my possible outcomes.

I'm really glad I own the third book, because I can't wait to read it and continue with this series. As a sequel this book deserves my 5 star-rating.

Despite thinking that Thrall was a bit meh, I really enjoyed Incubus,it was a definite improvement on the first book. Whereas Thrall set the scene, Incubus is where all the action and the mystery happens. I also started to really like the characters and the romance, which I didn't feel so keen on here. The best thing about this book was that it kept me guessing, since I thought Thrall was pretty predictable. We know the bad guy is an incubus, but we have no idea what powers an incubus could have and who it is, there are a few suspects though and I kind of guessed who it was, but I was still kept doubting and guessing from the start to the big reveal.

I really liked Braedyn in this book, she was head-strong and smart and I really felt sorry or her - she just couldn't catch a break! She was constantly being told not to do anything even though she was RAISED to do what she was doing then she does something wrong because she hasn't been told anything and she gets in more trouble. Lucas was more likable here, he has his jealous moments and his mean moments but his dedication to Braedyn is really obvious. I also like that this book happens nearly a year after the first book and their relationship has evolved. I liked that the couple were together but faced troubles, it made it more believable. I found myself actually rooting for the pair and I can't wait for them to be able to be together.

Something that stood out for me in this book was that the friends (Cassie and Royal) are still in it. In sequels, I sometimes find that some characters are completely forgotten about and even though Braedyn is too busy for them, this is explored and is actually the reason the antagonist is able to get to them.

Despite the story being so much better, I did still feel that the whole plot itself wasn't anything too unique, it did it's job and set up for the next book and was well executed, but it just didn't do anything to make it stand-out.

Overall, Incubus was definitely better than Thrall but didn't do enough to make it amazing. I did like the relationships and characters more in this book though. I recommend fans of the typical paranormal romance books start this series, but not really anyone after anything too original.

Overall Rating: B

Review: Incubus (Daughters of Lilith #2) by Jennifer Quintenz Uh, Oh, Things are starting to get real for Braedyn. Coming out of Thrall there was a lot of sky high ups, like saving the day but there were a lot of unanswered questions to be answered and Incubus just made things a lot more complicated. Honestly I mean complicated in the best sense because the world expanded by leaps and bounds here. We find out there is a male version of succubus called incubus and that not much is known about him in The Guards world, which of course means danger lies everywhere. Braedyn goes through a growth spurt in this second installment that is both negative and positive and it's what I look for in a YA heroine that is growing up.

The negative is the way she pulled away from her friends and family. However, this is part of being a teenager so I applaud the author for showing a real life situation in the midst of a crazy fantasy paranormal world. She makes mistakes and that's okay because I expect a girl of her to make mistakes. It makes the story seem authentic but still being this awesome supernatural story. It also gives Baedyn the opportunity to learn from these challenges and grow into a hero that I can love. She did that in this story multiples times and I feel like this sequel has set her up to great things in the future of the series. I would have liked to see some progress in a couple of her relationships, such as Karayan, but as far as moving the plot along this sequel was no slump.

Mrs. Quintenz also got me. I didn't see the ending coming at all and when an author gets one over on me that is rare because usually I can see a plot twist coming a mile away. Not here. I audibly gasped and scared my dog who was sleeping next to me in the wee hours of the morning. She kept it fresh, she kept it moving and she kept it real and everything about this book I loved. I'm a little afraid of where we are heading in this epic battle between good and evil but I am so on this train, I have booked my seats way in advance and can't wait to see what will happen with Braedyn and all her loved ones!

I was really confused with the sudden turn of events in here. One moment I knew who the enemies are, but then, there are those who are not what you think they were. It was a little bit frustrating for me, because with the first 10 chapters, I was really a little bit bored. I was actually afraid that I won't be able to finish this book, but after the 12th chapter, the story started to kick-up. The story started to be way too interesting to put down. And I just realized I was able to finish it no time.

The whole idea about the INCUBUS, was a way lot interesting. I love how the author made sure that the second book won't be focusing with the same LILITU thing again. But to the male counter-part of the Lilitus. The INCUBUS. So yes, even the pace of the story was a little bit slow for me, the plot and twist of the story was enough for me to finish it until the end. And I am really excited what the third book. ^_^

The only thing that bothers me about this book is that the characters didn't matured at all. I was really hoping that the characters will be more matured enough to make their own decisions for themselves. And be given the opportunity to kick into action like some Guards was doing. It was kinda annoying how the main characters was being kept at bay by those adults in the story. And what really annoyed me with this book is the adults sense of superiority towards the young ones. Seriously?! What's with all the: THEM DECIDING IT ALL BY THEMSELVES. It really annoyed me until the end that I wanted to punch them all. If we're Breadyn. I would have done that. 8 fucking days and she will be stocked being a Lilitu for 20 more years! And If worse happens, have the same life she has now. Crap! I was really dissappointed with his Father (Murphy) I can't help but realize he was kinda selfish about this whole thing. It was kinda ironic for him to force Breadyn to have a normal life as common teens have. But seriously?! She can't' while this war threatens to brake loose. But then, I think the adults mostly comes with right decision. *sigh* Still, I'm hoping I will be able to know how the series will continue. Guess I just need to wait to for the next sequel.

Since book 1 had me reeled in, I immediately started this book. You really do need to read book 1 before reading this so you can get the feel for the entire story. Plus this book begins where the last one left off, so that is always great for the reader to be literally sucked into the world of the Author.

Once again one of the underlying factors in this book is love. Again the love between the father and daughter is beautiful. The love between the two teens has likewise grown and matured. Braedyn needs to be careful of not drawing on Lucus’s life energy. There are so many twists and turns in this book.

We get a few new characters to meet. And again the action sequences in this book were amazing. The ending will leave you reeling. This story is incredible and Jennifer Quintenz is an amazingly talented author.

I will say that I knew who the bad guy was. But looking at other reviewers I see that they didn’t have even the slightest clue. I seem to have an affinity to know who the bad guy is in these type books. *must be my warped mind* But knowing who it was did not spoil this book in the least, because there were still surprises in store for me!

This book is an absolute MUST read! I can honestly admit that if I had book 3 in my hands when it was 2am and I’d finished this one I would have grabbed it up and continued this saga!

The only problem I had, was now I have to wait for book 3… I am not known for my patience. But alas I will have to wait and grab it the day it comes out.

If you haven’t read this series yet… What are you waiting for??? GO GET IT!!!!

Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Things are gettin’ demon-y up in here. Braedyn and her assorted crew are back and are getting ready to prepare for the big showdown, but there’s a pesky incubus in the way.

This story, much like the first one, contains contemporary issues with a lot of paranormal aspects thrown in. Does that make sense? I’ll explain. Braedyn is trying to survive high school, and a bully, who we’ll get to later, a boyfriend, old and new friends, and a creepy teacher. Then you throw in her Lilitu background and things get crazy up in here.

Braedyn is a physically and mentally strong character who is able to portray her story in a believable manner. I think Braedyn’s a real depiction of a teenager. Even though she’s pretty much a sexy succubus, she still has her insecurities and doubts. And of course there’s the fact that she has to keep her make out sessions with her smoking HAWT boyfriend as short as possible. That brings me to Lucas. I still am in a serious lust relationship with this man-child. I did kind of feel that Lucas needed a tad more development, but his and Braedyn’s relationship was definitely given more room to grow and flourish in this book.

Braedyn’s friends played a large role in the story, for which I was pretty excited about. It did keep the Guard characters in the background a little more than I would I have liked, however. I enjoyed all of the characters’ page-time, nonetheless.

The plot of the story was a tad bit predictable. Once I was about halfway through I knew what was going to happen. Although, Quintenz did manage to have me doubting myself with the minor twists and turns that were thrown in. Especially the thing with Amber. Didn’t expect that at all.

All in all, Incubus is a great sequel with the potential to lead to a pretty epic conclusion. If you want a paranormal read that isn’t about vampires, werewolves, angels and all the other overly popularized monsters, Incubus and its predecessor, Thrall, are the books for you.

4/5 stars

First, I will start by saying I was on goodreads looking at the "giveaways" a couple of months or so ago. I have found in the past year, it is one of the best places to look for new books to read.I came across "Incubus" ,I saw it was the second in its series and decided to check out the first book and see what it was about. I became interested enough to where I purchased in the next 10 minutes and began reading.
If you love books within this genre read this series.(Angels,Demons, tales of Lilith)
Now when I say tales of Lilith, if you read as much as I do you have read some different ones that follow young adult and adult books concerning the beginning of time and Lilith's part.
I have read other reviews and agree yet disagree with at least one mention of this series being nothing original.I feel it is original; in the sense I think there is more coming. Some authors have this way of telling and writing such a captivating first story in a series that you get so excited waiting for the second and your disappointed when you read the second and it doesn't hold the intensity as the first. Not Jennifer Quintenz,I can see it coming..the first was great and you wanted to read the second..the second held more action, but you can feel that there is still something big and important about Braedyn around the bend we didn't get to yet.I could write about the romance between Luke and Braedyn, but I am not certain we know what path Braedyn will take long term yet,I truly hope this series will be longer than a few books, I think it will take that for us to really see what all is in store for Braedyn and Luke...I will be re reading both books over again shortly and may add more to this review. Overall if you like this genre do not second guess your self, read the series.I have read many books that I have not bothered with reading any more in the series, this is one for the long haul.
Surprised as I was to find out this is one of the giveaways I won, but instead of using the book and bending pages,I bought it for my kindle,it was worth it.

I read book 1 back in May and really enjoyed it, so I was very happy when I was asked if I wanted to read and review book 2.
We are back with Braedyn and the impending war with the Lillitu. She knows something big is planned and that she is an essential tool in the upcoming battle, but no one is quite sure exactly what is going to happen. Then word gets out that an Incubus is in town, this causes major panic in the guard, not only are Incubus very rare but also very dangerous. They sort of work as male versions of the Lillitu and are dangerous. Now they have to find out who it is and what they want. With lots of potential suspects and victims both close to Braedyn and strangers, they need to act quickly.
I liked the progression and development of the characters and the sub-plots that run through the book as well, all the issues between Braedyn and her school friends and work as well all interweave and build up the tension and story.
During the book, Braedyn tries to figure out who the Incubus is, I have to admit I had a pretty good idea from at least half way in, but she is such a skilled writer that I would constantly second guess myself, every time I reassured myself that it was who I thought it was, she would do something in the storyline that would make me change my mind and think 'no it can't be!' However I was quite proud to be right, but it also meant the big revelation wasn't much of a shock or surprise to me. Anyone else read this and figured it out too?
I count myself lucky to have found Quintenz as an author, her writing does captivate you and have you wanting more, the characters are likeable but also flawed - realistic, the sort of people you can imagine talking to, being friends with, or even being enemies with. This book was a little bit slower paced than the first but I still read it quickly and was always eager to know more.
I would strongly recommend this series, well worth a read.

This review and more on So Bookalicious

Jennifer Quintenz reminded me in Incubus why exactly I loved the first book in this series so much.

Puerto Escondido is again threatened by evil, this time the town is terrorized by an Incubus. No one has heard of one in centuries, the Guard doesn’t know who they can trust anymore. On top of this threat they still have to prepare for the upcoming battle with the Lilitu.

Braedyn has the hardest time of all she’s an official part of the guard, but there are still people who distrust her since she’s a Lilitu. So she’s not allowed to know certain Lilitu history and knowledge that is essential for her. We all know Braedyn this won’t stop her, so she sets out to discover these things on her own. But what she discovers turns her world upside down. On top of that Braedyn has to deal with all the high school drama.
This is the part I had some issues with. Braedyn never did something to make the Guard believe she wasn’t trustworthy, so why did they treat her like this? And then they blame her that she looks for answers herself and makes mistakes. Agreed Breadyn should trust the people around her more and she’s way to stubborn for her own good. But I felt really sorry for her in the end.

Incubus has a lot more action than the previous book and the battle scenes are just epic! The writing flowed easily throughout the book so it was easy to be pulled into the book. New relationships were formed and old ones were tested.

I would recommend this book for anyone who loves reading fantasy where characters try to find out where in the world they fit. I am looking forward to read the third book in this series!

I was given this book free in exchange for an Honest review, so here goes.

I am a picky but voracious reader, when I find something I'm interested by I envelope it. This character Braedyn has captured me. I am fascinated by her day to day struggle to be a normal kid under anything but normal circumstances. I am also fascinated by her struggle to be the human her dad raised her to be instead of the deom she was bor to be. I have tried recently through a few free book email rings & websites to find new authors & books to read. I have found a few gems & so far this series is one of them.

Off to finish book 3 and the book 4 ... I'll let you know what I think of those as well!
