They all missed the signs. When Jack and Bill race to find Tommy, they have no idea the extent of the damage they are about to find.
A cryptic message is delivered from the mastermind behind the terror.
Jack is told he can only save one. Tommy is his brother, but Brittany is everything. How does he choose who to save? How will the family deal with the aftermath?
What A Start! The previous novel's ending was good, but not great but this punch right in the beginning (about 5-8 pages in) was awesome. This made me hopeful for a strong novel, but expected filler as well just not all filler. I skipped past the flashback text as it seemed redundant or recently happened. There were also two chapters labeled as "eight" in the digital NOOK version. Otherwise, Nadler didn't disappoint in this novel.
I also agreed with Julie about not being sure how much to trust Evan and his wife. My flags went up in the previous novel when Evan was introduced, but quickly reeled it back down when he went above and beyond his job. But when his wife Elizabeth entered, something seemed off with her and the flag went up again and stayed up - something about how she knew more and strung stories together.
I liked the I guess you could say "visions" Tommy was having during his capture. It reminded me of the first novel when Nikki would "visit" Jack in helping Stephanie. I really liked this kind of encouragement and strength. I really liked that Nadler used the appearances of Nathan, Tommy's Parents and their unborn child to help encourage them to fight to live. Nathan mentioned, "I've met Tommy's parents, we play poker every weekend." I loved this!
The scene with Bill and Janet was amazingly written! For a moment, I will admit that I honestly thought "holy s#!t, Bill was on Janet's side?!" but knew, "nah, its a trick" which it was, but well written Nadler.
The story of how Stephanie and Brittany met was portrayed well (again, well written). It gives you a glimpse of Stephanie's childhood, which we haven't learned at all within this series; we know everyone else's family heritage and parentage, but nothing on Stephanie. It was short and sweet and to the point.
One thing I disliked in how this was written, was how the text was organized or flowed. Someone might be talking or character direction was given and then the next paragraph you're waiting for a response, but the same person kept speaking. It was just a little odd for me when the number of people involved in a conversation is over three.
Another element I disliked was the few redundant "I can't live like this. This sucks. I'm not strong enough" parts between the couples again which bored me. Thankfully, it didn't last too long.
Also, Nadler was jumping ahead in time which was nice rather than focusing on every detail. For example, "two weeks past and everyone seemed to be doing well [ insert one sentence each about each character] [move along with the story]"
[SPOILER ALERT] I really liked that Nadler was introducing a new storyline between Jade and Mike. They have been strong secondary characters and it was nice to see them come forward; it was freshening.
I loved this novel, by far the best written one. Nadler really wrote this one well. She keeps you on edge and pulls at your heartstrings as well. It had drama and humor and little wishy-washyness back and forth. It lagged a little at times but finally a decent read that kept your hooked. Especially the new story of Jade and Mike
What a terrific book. Such an amazing family, and it keeps on growing with Mike and Jade coming into the group. In the midst of trying to find out who's behind the attacks on the family, the adventures they go through watching their babies grow and thrive add joy and laughter to the mix! On to book 12!
