A Sister's Secret was previously published as A Professional Gentleman.
Mary Jane Staples is a pseudonym used by British author Reginald Thomas Staples (1911-2005). He is also published under the name Robert Tyler Stevens, R.T. Stevens, and James Sinclair.
I did not enjoy or finish the book. The language was too stiff or hard to.understand at times. But thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc
Mary Jane Staples is no Georgette Heyer when it comes to regency romances but this was quite an enjoyable book with personable characters. I must admit, plot-wise, I got far more involved in the political intrigue than with the romantic side though and finished the book wanting to read about others of Captain Burnside's espionage adventures.
Book : A Sister's Secret Author : Mary Jane Staples Genre : Historical Romance 📚 Lady Caroline, the widow of wicked Lord Perceival repents her hasty marriage to him out of infatuation. She owns two estates in her name and is free to lead a life fully socialising with London's finest aristocracy. Her only problem is her sister Anabelle who is about to fall victim to a similar fate at the hands of Cumberland, a villainous Duke. Caroline hires a charming professional gentleman, Captain Burnside who had to dissuade her sister from wicked intentions of Cumberland. But Fate spins it's wheel differently and circumstances change.
Classic lovers and readers of historical romance will like the book. It had all the ingredients perfectly simmered to qualify it a good classic read. The middle of the book got sluggish but other than that it was fine. Language used is also beautifully adorned with descriptive words. Being a classic lover..... 4⭐/5 #netgalley Thank you for the copy of the book.
Well. There was not much to this story as it was not an actual story. It did not read like a story. It read like word vomit. Everything just ran together. There were no pauses. The reader would be given 3 people in a room and there would be introspection, but you couldn't identify who was thinking what. It was the same as conversations. According to the way this author wrote, the people were in a room, said a sentence, then everyone would think, then there would be a response, but the reader would have to back up two pages to re-read and determine who was saying what or who was thinking what. People floated all around this book. There was no direction as to who was in a room, or the stables, or the carriage. The use of double negatives and other bad grammar was used throughout the whole story. The author used such a strange way of writing, it was like the reader had to translate what was being read. And the book was in English and still didn't make sense. I give this book zero stars and do not recommend
This book is about Lady Caroline that is very rich, she has to make up her mind to marry or not. Some things that have happened have made her rethink of being married. Also in this book, there is Carolines younger sister Annabelle, whom herself has no problem with love and commitment. Annabelle is in love with a man that is known for cheating. Caroline knows this and Annabelle doesn't believe her. Caroline hires Captain Burnside which is very attractive enough to distract Annabelle. But it doesn't go that way.
I really enjoyed this story, it had a little of everything. but I got a little bored halfway. I love this author but this book wasn't for me.
I recommend this book to people that like historical romance.
I would like to give thanks to NETGALLEY and Random House UK for letting me read and review this book. #ASistersSecret #NetGalley
Marm, makes me think of Little Women or a school teacher! I am positive the Author did not have that in her mindset! Captain Burnside is a rogue on the inside, but Caroline thinks he is one through and through! The Duke of Cumberland is a lecherous Royal who uses his position and title to coerce people to his will. He currently has Caroline in his purview and he doesn’t care who he uses to get her even if he has to corrupt her younger naive sister Annabelle. Caroline will do anything to save her sister, but instead of giving in to Cumberland, she hires Captain Burnside to help corral her wayward sister from the clutches of the no good Royal. The adventures are about to begin and a new player , Jonathan enters the picture to only confound the situation! Laughter and mischievous moments are about to begin so push a button and grab a good book. I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and I am willingly giving my thoughts and opinions.
Mary Jane Staples is a genius! The storyline was amazing. I could not put the book down. Her characterization was wonderful and her intertwining of her characters with some famous historical characters is nothing short of genius.
The major characters were very witty. This is a book with 2 wonderful love stories. I loved this book!
I usually love Mary Jane Staples and have read and enjoyed many of her books but this one just didn't hold me. I don't know why but I couldn't warm to the characters or their lives. I did read the first 100 pages but got a bit bored. Sorry.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book x
For a slight story, this is a veeeeery loooooong read. Too much fiddle de dee and not nearly enough for the heroine to do. Cap’n Burnside was charming but his rather better drawn character wasn’t enough to prop up the rest of the book.
Written by a man under a female pseudonym, maybe this shouldn’t be a surprise.
Rather bland with no chemistry between the 2 main characters. I read it as A Sister's Secret re-released in 2013 under the pseudonym Mary Jane Staples.
The fact that it was written over 30 years ago by a man explains why the story was so dry.
This one set in a different time period is to me not as good as the others that this writer has published. Prefer the cockneys in Walworth. Although there are some in the book. It is an okay read.
Horrible characters. I couldn't find any value in any of them. The story was hard to read, no flow to it, and the conversations were long and useless. Not my type of story at all.
Cannot remember what I originally thought of this Georgian period romance , but it did seem very predictable right from the off ! In this I proved to be correct , but it was a light read which suited me fine after having just finished quite a heavy Book. I was expecting many of the Characters to be dressed in Pink as it reminded me of Barbara Cartland's Novels! How ever I have always enjoyed far better many of Mary Jane Staples other Books
Cavendish square home of caroline howard known as lady clarence percival although this book I enjoyed at the start half way through I got a bit bored its seems to be lacking something, and I struggled till the end. Sorry to have to say this as I am a big fan of this authors work and read all her adams family books that bring a sense of humour this didn't do that for me. Above all it was just a ok book
I enjoyed the book - but the main female character was pretty annoying. She was always raging on about nothing and there really wasn't enough depth to her personality. If she wasn't so aggressive and mean (without cause), I think I would have ranked it higher.
