His wife, Heike, is also a writer and often works with her husband. She often comes up with the story ideas and therefore is generally credited as co-author. Their daughter, Rebecca, is also a writer.
Writing short stories since age 15, Hohlbein was first recognized as an author after sending in a manuscript he and his wife had written at a fantasy and science fiction writing contest in 1982. They won and their book, Märchenmond (English title: "Magic Moon"), was published by Ueberreuter Publishing, soon becoming a bestseller and winning several awards. It is one of their greatest successes till today.
Many of his more than 200 books are translated and published in many European countries as well as in South Korea. Yet for many years none of his works had been translated into English. In 2006, Magic Moon was translated into English and published in the United States.

Wolfgang Hohlbein is a German fantasy and science fiction writer, but most of his books have not been translated to English. I have previously read the first six novels in his Chronic of the Undead , but they never really grabbed me. I found this short story Der Orkling per accident on Spotify and gave it a try. The beginning was pretty fun as we enter the mind of an orc called Groxmox. The story also contained all the right clichés ranging from head-hitting as problem solving to simple-mindedness and battle-eager. Then it made a sudden and unexpected turn, which was maybe a bit too dramatical but also very inventive . The ending left me a bit ambivalent. Overall, my opinion does not change, though I wish there would be more German SF authors!

A German friend recommended Wolfgang Hohlbein to me, but to date I have not been overly impressed by his stories. This one, however, managed to surprise me. I worked my way very slowly through the first half of the book. By slowly, I mean I put it down for long periods and came back to it and took maybe a year to read it all (despite being quite a short book). I thought it was a somewhat amusing but very standard piece of fantasy fiction set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Halflings, Orcs, magic swords... nothing much to recommend it.
And then everything changed, and the book lived up to its hype. The write up on Amazon for the book reads:
"Zwischen Orks und Elben tost eine brutale Schlacht. Inmitten des Getümmels nimmt der Ork Groxmox einen kleinen Kämpfer gefangen - einen Halbling! Keiner von beiden ahnt, dass sie gemeinsam etwas erleben werden. Etwas, das noch weit unfassbarer ist als Magie..."

"Between orcs and Elves there is brutal battle. In the midst of the fray, the Orc Groxmox captures a small fighter - a halfling! Neither of them suspects that together they will experience something. Something that is far more unbelievable than magic ..."
And without giving any spoilers, I think that write up is a fair summary for once.
An amusing and clever adventure for young adults. It is not going to be a classic, but the key plot twist was better than expected.

Wolfgang Hohlbein hat mit “Der Orkling” einen wahrlich phantastischen Kurzroman geschrieben. In einer Welt, in der sich Orks, Elben und Halblinge ständig bekämpfen, treffen ein Ork und ein Halbling zusammen. Der Ork, plötzlich so etwas wie einem Gewissen bedacht, rettet den Halbling während einer Schlacht und mithilfe eines magischen Schwertes unternehmen sie eine Reise in die Realität, die alles bisher selbstverständliche in Frage stellt.
Die Welt ist gewohnt fantasievoll und die Charaktere gut gezeichnet. Da es sich hier um einen Kurzroman handelt, liegt der Fokus ganz klar auf den beiden Hauptprotagonisten. Zu diesen bekommt man jedoch im Laufe der Zeit einen guten Draht. Die Geschichte wiederum ist gut konstruiert, lässt genug Zeit zum Verstehen der Welt, nur um anschließend sogleich ins Abenteuer zu starten. Aus der Sicht von Groxmox geschrieben, ist man auf jeden Fall immer mitten im Geschehen. Überraschende Wendungen können hier nicht zu kurz, aber auch kleine tiefsinnige Gedanken können gefunden werden, wenn man genau hinschaut. Witzig und Selbstironisch kommt der Spaß hier nicht zu kurz. Überzeugt hat zudem, dass trotzdem eine gewisse Erklärung geboten wird, obwohl es sich um Fantasy handelt.
Ein fantasievoller Ausflug in die Realität, der durch amüsante Charakter unterhält und gekonnt mit Selbstverständlichkeiten spielt. Eine schöne Geschichte für zwischendurch.
