Don McKeever just wants to go fishing. Instead, he has to check in on his employees at C Mart. Today the big corporate boss is paying the store a visit. The last time the boss came, Don got his ass chewed and it was not pretty.

As if things could not be bad enough, Don has to put up with incompetent employees and complete with T Mart, another discount store that opened across the street.

Sale Day at C Mart is like a bad comedy show and I mean it in a good way. This book will have you wanting to tear your hair out, pop a couple Tylenol and a couple of antacids. Ok, so you may not feel this way but this is how I felt reading this book. I wanted to scream at how dysfunction the characters were but at the same time, they were entertaining and I could not get enough of them.

My only favorite character in this book was Billy. He seemed to be the normal one and he was kind hearted. Everyone else, I would avoid if I was shopping at C Mart and leave the store angry as many of the customer did. At the same time, I could understand why the C Mart employees had such bad attitudes. I would too if the big corporate boss always kept reminding my boss that it is good for employees to constantly be overworked, under paid and don’t forget to fire employees before their ten year anniversary. If you are looking for some fun at a good price than you should check out Sale Day at C Mart!

Unusual? Yes. Quirky? Yes. Funny? A couple of times.
This story is set as a day at work at discount superstore C Mart. They tell people they have K-Mart, T-Mart, and Wal-Mart shaking in their boots because of their policy to spread the workforce so thin they have to be efficient. Yeah, that's a running "joke" in the story.
If some of the activities were less painfully realistic in how it deals with retail life I might have given a lower grade. But, if you have worked in a retail job for any length of time, you recognize some of the lunatic situations. So, it has that going for it.

I only made it to the noon chapter in the book and I’m giving those 100ish pages 2.5 stars. It starts off promising but gets more ridiculous by the turn of each page. I was excited to read it because I worked retail, remember the days of Christmas in July, the customers and visits from the upper management. The description says comedic satire, but it goes beyond being funny, to just really unrealistic. It seems to get jumbled up in trying to be funny that it loses its focus on all the things that happen in retail.

Book review

I can't believe I wasted my time on this book. It started out good, and went down hill after that. I actually stopped at the last chapter. I got more and more irritated with the ridiculous and unbelievable play on words and totally unbelievable customer and clerk interaction. I have worked retail and seen some interesting things, but, this is ludicrous.

This book started out good, and anyone whoever worked in retail could relate to it. Then it just took a really stupid, ridiculous turn. I was very disappointed and just skimmed through the last chapters to see how it ended. I was very disappointed that a book could start out so good and then end up being senseless and terrible!

Corporate Comedy

This is so close to the truth that it fascinates while it terrifies. This should be required reading in every business school. I have seen the same hapless management style in many other lines of business.

This is like a cross between "Clerks" and "Catch-22" in that it takes place in a retail environment and features a cast of characters who are largely fighting against the stupidity of their management, whose penny-pinching philosophy is to "spread 'em thin" ['em being the employees] so as not to pay as many salaries. This leads to numerous problems for the employees, especially since they are plagued with a slew of nutty customers. Sometimes it gets a bit too surreal (like the conservative and liberal who get fused at the butt) but most of the time it's a fun workplace comedy.

A little humor with an abundance of "read between the lines" sarcasm.
