Simply and succinctly written for a young audience yet comprehensive in documenting Vincent’s significant life events and paintings produced during that time. I particularly liked how the author shows how Vincent’s style influenced those painters who came after him (The Fauves and the Expressionists) as well as those he was influenced by: Millet, Delacroix and Rembrandt.
It was interesting to note that Vincent’s famous Sunflower paintings were created as a gift to Gauguin in anticipation of his coming to stay with him. The event itself did not out well-Gauguin was threatened with a razor and Vincent cut off his ear. Obvious tormented soul yet the year in the asylum was a productive time yielding one of my favorites Irises in 1889. He chose to paint outside almost exclusively even at night when his colorful cafe scenes were done.
What I did not like in this author’s story is the cause of death as suicide though popularly acclaimed not without controversy which was not suggested here.
