When Musketeer Porthos agrees to instruct a young nobleman in the art of fencing, his apprentice meets an untimely demise at the hands of poison and Porthos and his friends band together once again to catch a killer. Original.
And I would not claim that Sarah Hoyt's version is entirely faithful, it certainly begins with the characters and the timed and adds in a (slightly) more modern perspective. Each of her mysteries focuses on one of the Musketeers-- this one belongs to Porthos. He is not quite the simple giant-clown of the original.
The third mystery in D'Almeida's Musketeers series focuses on Porthos. This time Porthos, in search of his missing fencing apprentice, finds the boy dying behind a pub. Not knowing what to do, he goes to his friends, who promise to help him find the murderer.
The Musketeer mysteries all have twists and turns that keep a reader guessing who the culprit might be until the very end. This volume is no different. However, the end to this one is heart wrenching and left me with a tear in my eye.
The entire series so far is a great addition to historical mystery and cozy mystery genres. Recommended.
