To describe Running: Maximize Performance & Minimize Injuries by Dr. Donald Ozello as a wellspring of information is somewhat of an understatement. This educational and engaging book is packed with in depth knowledge of the beneficial but sometimes painful sport of running as well as countless ways to avoid the latter (pain) while enjoying the former (benefits). While I gleaned much from this informative text, 2 main lessons stand out: 1. Running does not have to hurt and 2. A Doctor of Chiropractic cares for more than just the back. This book is sure to serve as a lifelong resource for readers interested in taking up running or simply learning how to best prevent unnecessary injuries and preserve physical health.
Runners: Get This Book! Especially if you're not trained or being coached and just self initiating your running, it's a great resource to avoid all the common problems injuries from jogging and running on your own.
Written by Dr. Ozello of Championship Chiropractic in Las Vegas, the book is from a chiropractic perspective in minimizing injuries while running. As someone who's never been to a chiropractor before, I was curious about how such treatment could help me. Turns out there's a lot that it can do and the book gives simple explanations and easy exercises you can do on your own to treat various issues. The best thing about this book is that the information is concise and to the point while also listing a direct YouTube link for quick "how-to" of many of the exercises. The breakdown of info and anatomical illustrations were clear and simple too.
The only thing I think I'd add would be to aesthetically make the text layout and formatting cleaner and also adding a specific playlist of just the chiropractic videos on the YouTube channel used in the book. That way readers can easily browse them all in the app and also be lead to other helpful vids like the one I found on how chiropractic care can help alleviate some issues with asthma. I had no idea it could do that! Dr. Ozello clearly explains that it's obviously not a cure for asthma but that it can help with "thoracic tightness" etc that a lot of people with asthma have. I know EXACTLY what he's talking about because when mountain cedar comes and my asthma gets insane my chest and back get strained and super tight. It's very painful. So now I'm looking forward to trying chiropractic care for not just sciatic pain but also possible asthma strain/issues.
The piriformis and calf muscle portions were most helpful to me since those are the two areas where I've had the most problems. Actually, I learned from this book that my intermittent plantar fasciitis pain is from tight calf muscles. In one of the corresponding videos (seriously, they are SO helpful!) he shows how to stretch using a "U-shaped calf stretching device" and how it gets to the real muscle, not just the Achilles' tendon. And that's been a huge problem for me, getting at the deeper stretch in my calf, so I'm very excited to try and find one of the devices and try it. I'll post an update when I do.
If I lived in Vegas I'd totally go to Dr Ozello to try chiropractic care. I'll have to find someone local to give it try, but in the meantime I'm loving the exercises from this book. What a lucky month January 2015 has been for me! I won this book (my second) through goodreads and so happy I did because it's furthered my journey towards good health through natural healing and non-invasive process. I hope it's the kind of luck that's indicative of the kind of year all of 2015 will be for me:)
Since graduating from high school over twenty years ago, I haven’t been able to reestablish running as part of my exercise routine without feeling totally overwhelmed. Dr. Donald Ozello’s book has motivated me to regain my willingness to make running part of my weekly workouts. His discussion of the benefits of running immediately inspired me and had my spirits rising again to feel that rush of endorphins. I take away a number of key factors that will allow me to become a runner again. These include the critical importance of warming-up, stretching, cooling down, and recovering properly. I learned a great deal about developing and maintaining flexibility, establishing a running posture, and remembering not to do too much too soon. Everything he advocates is with the need to prevent injury and help people restart and maintain their running goals at realistic levels. In particular, I also gained a lot from his chapter on sciatica. As someone who has experienced discomfort from my sciatic nerve, I really appreciated Dr. Ozello’s concise and easy-to-understand discussion of what causes the nerve to react and what types of exercises can help to alleviate the pain. Every chapter is written in a clear, easy-to-follow format. At the end of several chapters, Ozello also includes links and QR codes to videos he has put together to correspond with the content in his book. Overall, the book gave me a feeling of empowerment and reinvigoration to begin safely and confidently running again.
Dr. Ozello has provided a very thorough and complete.explanation of how to prepare for running as well as how to run and avoid as well as treat injuries. He has a knack for covering subjects from different angles thus allowing the reader to interpret the information in the most relevant manner. Dr. Ozello's understanding of the mechanics of the body in addition to his suggestions for documenting everything from nutrition to injury recover will benefit those seeking to take their running to the next level. A key takeaway is Dr. Ozello's way of adding up the symptoms in order to become a better runner. We've all had that day where we just couldn't seem to perform at the normal level. Finally someone has provided the clues to discovering how this occurs.
I think that Donald writes about a subject he is well acquainted with and his book offers answers to many questions athletes find they need to address. I, for one, love that he shows pictures and gives options for us novice people looking for answers. His expertise and confidence assures his readers that he can help them. I had hurt my knee and went to that section and walked away knowing more about my care options. Perfect for sports enthusiasts!

This book is a great reference for any runner to keep on hand. As a simple and straightforward resource for a variety of common running ailments, this book makes it easy to figure out if your symptoms really are a specific injury and how to proceed with treating as well as preventing it in the future. Written by a chiropractor who is local to my community, I know he cares about athletes and their performance and that makes the book content even more relevant.
