Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
So begins the enchanting adventures of a lonely little boy named Jackie and a magical dragon named Puff. They journey to the land of Honah Lee, and on their way meet a pirate who's really a baker, a skyful of mean clouds, a falling star that needs to be rescued, and a bunch of very peculiar creatures known as Sneezes. Jackie learns that growing up can be truly magical as long as you have a dragon named Puff to show you the way.
This contemporary fairy tale, based on one of America's favorite songs, will appeal to readers of all ages.
I loved this book as a child of 6 being read to by my mum.
But....
It is soooo sad and I remember howling my eyes out til I could hardly see straight. I wouldn't let her stop reading though; I had to know what happened (even though I knew what happened because hey, what kid born in the seventies didn't grow up being lulled to sleep by Peter Paul and Mary, right?)
Anyway, as an adult, we know that Puff is a metaphor for childhood imagination but as a kid it goes whoosh over your head and all you know is your beloved Puff is gone. *sniff sniff
I think that those working with students with selective mutism should read this book. I think that this book was ahead of its time. The story of puff the magic dragon was ahead of its time. And I believe that there are so many conspiracy theories about the song and about the timeframe in which it was written. I just read it for exactly what it was telling me and I read a great story of a little boy with mutism who found his voice through a journey to find courage. I would’ve loved to give him this book more stars but I believe this book could’ve been bigger. I think it could be better. I also understand that is a children’s book and in that sense it achieved its goal.
Puff, magically appears in little Pete's bedroom window and a friendship of a life time begins - including a miracle that Pete can talk! And I'm sure Peter, Paul and Mary helped to make this a story that everyone can sing and knows! A Happy Blessing for Christmas time in 2020!
Simple, cute story. I’ve never read it before now, and I also haven’t watched the show, so why is Jackie afraid to talk? We never get a reason why he won’t talk, just that he’s afraid to, and Puff the magic dragon is going to help him conquer his fear.
I had never read this a child, and found it recently as a parent. I read this aloud to my kids. The story is cute. What impressed me was the use of a wide vocabulary!
One of my childhood favorites! (I had the book along with the record and would sing along with it to the point that I'm sure I drove my parents a bit nuts, lol!) In any case, I was out bargain hunting for kids books for my Little Free Libraries when I stumbled across this. I knew I had to purchase it (a quarter, big spender! But priceless for the memories!) and read it. Happy Memories :) (Puff has gotten a bad rap over the years, just my opinion, lol!)
I remember my Kindergarten teacher reading this book to my Kindergarten class. It has always been one of my most favorite stories in the world. I recently found it at my favorite bookstore, bought it, brought it home and shared it with my kids who now love it too. They're already asking me to read it again. I love the message in this book about being brave and concurring your fears... this helps when you have children with anxiety.
Found this in the box of books my dad wanted to give away...he's inscribed it for me. Now I remember watching the cartoon as a little girl. And the song that inspired this book is still among my all-time favorites.
The actual caliber of the story, judged as an adult, is not exactly perfect. For one, the bits of this book that are not from the movie are kind of awful. I mean, the movie is cheesy, but the book-exclusive metaphors are not well-done, and they're a different kind of a cheesy. A bad cheesy.
