'Supermarket meat that is just such a treat'
This brief shopping trip proved to be just oh so deliciously enjoyable - but very different to what I was actually expecting. Going into the supermarket experience, I was fully prepared to be subjected to detailed descriptions of mutilations and outrages of the ultra-violent and intensely gruesome persuasion but was actually presented with a clever and highly amusing blood and body part, murderous 'vampo-cannibalistic' romp which took place in such an ordinary, accepted, normal everyday setting.
Garrett and fellow shoppers enter Grueber's, the new downtown food store, but after discovering some of the highly unusual sickly grim and grisly items on display dotted around the shop they decide instead to attempt to exit and inform the authorities at the earliest opportunity. Unfortunately for them, that is when they realise that they are trapped and they themselves may well become the new fridge freezer offerings of tomorrow. Not a good place to be - but how on earth can they escape such a diabolical and demonic situation, what exactly is going on and who is behind the whole blood thirsty operation?
The story itself felt like eating a nice big wholesome sandwich. A strong 'eye-watering,' gobsmacking start, a quite brilliant, just how I like it, incredible ending and, in the middle, a rich and flavoursome 'shopping in the supermarket', character developing, meat filling. Perhaps at this stage there was slightly too much dialogue in the human relationships department rather than delivering more of the
truly terrifying and macabre fun-filled gruesomeness that would have added that extra bit of garnish to complete the truly appetising, 'top of the range' final product.
Yep, this was a great idea, with some lovely touches and all contained within a quite wonderful plot, but for some reason I just couldn't quite buy into it being workable in real-life. I think the problem was the fact that no customers were ever allowed to leave the store, and so I viewed the whole scenario as just being possible for a particular time period, say 1 hour, rather than as a rolling, ongoing situation, for every minute of every day.
However, all in all, a quite brilliant read which had lots to say about us humans in general, typified by the unforeseen character building ending that just about said it all. Well, that's the human race for you - what can you expect!
Highly recommended. Rating: 4.3 meaty human stars.
