Marry in haste, repent at leisure...and Valerie had plenty of time to repent...four long years. Her marriage to Sean Hunter had been deliriously happy until her desire to become a dancer had torn them apart. Her husband gone, Valerie lost her career as well when she bore Sean the son whose existence he never even suspected. Then Sean walked back into her life, and once he met Michael she knew he intended to have the boy...at any cost. How could she cope with a man who wanted her only for her son's sake--a man who was only marking time until he could put another in her place?
I'm a multi-published author since 1979 and now writing paranormal romance or what I like to call witch lit. 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover came out this past March and Hex Appeal comes out in November with Halloween promotion and will also be carried in Target.
My witch series has also been optioned to be shopped around as a TV series or movie. So here's hoping!
This is a Silhouette from 1980. It’s a fast read and a lot happens, hence the 3 stars.
There’s a rape scene in it, so not safe. They never talk about it until a few sentences in the very last pages and he never apologizes to her. I think because rape in a marriage back then was not really considered rape.
Somewhere in the book he slaps her in her face after she flirts with another man. Too much violence for me.
I do believe in his love for her, but he is also very cruel. He is really not a man you would want as your husband. He needs therapy.
This was a good one, though it takes a dark turn when a drunk H rapes the h! I don't think that would have happened if he hadn't had one too many, but that's hardly an excuse! (He did apologize for it later on, though at first it appeared like he didn't remember what had happened.)
And as an added irony, the reason for him getting drunk and angry was a moot point. Newly married, the H got a job promotion with the army that meant a transfer to Australia just when the h got the chance to dance the lead in "Swan Lake". It would mean a commitment of about two months, while the H had to leave in two weeks. Having studied for so long, she hated to give up the chance, and he felt rejected and stormed out. While he was gone, she had decided the ballet wasn't worth being separated from her husband and waited (hours) for him to come home. When she finally went to bed, that's when the drunken attack happened.
She left after that, but when she found out she was pregnant she tried to get in touch with him, but he had already left the country. (The next irony is that the baby derailed her dance career, and she never went back to it, except as a teacher.) They don't see each other for four years (the fact that neither pushed for a divorce tells you something), when he's at a party she attends with her boss (the OM). Another irony: the OM was an acquaintance of the H's!
I could understand the h trying to make a new life for herself, but I could also understand the H's hurt and anger when he finds out he has a son and missed out on the first few years of his life. And (yet another irony) I liked how the h's BFF (whom she shared a place with) was also a friend to the H, and had kept in touch with him, unbeknownst to the h.
The H makes it clear he wants his son, and her choice is for the three of them to live like a family (even if their marriage is a sham) or else he'll attempt to get full custody, and now that he's a successful businessman, he has the means to give a good fight. Of course, she agrees, but what she really wants is for him to love her (she admits to herself she never stopped loving him), but she keeps her feelings hidden, thinking he only wants their son. A
And (of course), the OW is still lurking!
One thing I liked: despite her lack of sophistication, the h didn't back down easily when confronted with the OW and her snarky remarks; in fact, at times she gave as good as she got!
One thing I hated: the OM's possessive, domineering attitude, it made me want to kick him where it hurts the most! The h hadn't been dating him long, never gave him more than a quick goodnight kiss, but he still got the idea she was his property, kept trying to push her to get a divorce, got way too handsy with her, as well as rough (more than once he'd grab her arms in anger) and forced kisses on her at the party where she first saw the H again! (In the dark, she didn't know it was him and then blamed the H for it!) And the JERK later confessed what he did and thought that she liked it! Talk about conceit!!!! He and the OW should have gotten together, they'd deserve each other!
It takes a while to get everything sorted out with the H and h, but despite all the drama, you can't help wanting them to get their HEA.
Another book that's flawed, but still good.
