Andrew Beyer shows the handicapper how to make his Beyer Speed Figures the focal point of a horse wagering strategy for pursuing spectacular profits. Intended for the serious horseplayer, Beyer on Speed explains how to relate speed figures to such factors as pace, track bias, and track conditions. It helps the bettor utilize the new opportunities for picking winners, such as video replays or a successfully structured pick-six ticket. Written in Beyer’s engaging, rapid-fire prose, Beyer on Speed reveals optimal use of the figures based on computer analysis of more than 10,000 races. This invaluable book on wagering is a classic of the sport and can be enjoyed by the novice as well as the advanced player.
An update and expansion on Beyer's theories and speed-figure calculation for handicapping thoroughbred racing. Amusing, easy to follow. Valuable in the 1980s and early 1990s. Unfortunately, those who were willing to do the work no longer have an advantage, as Beyer Speed Figures now are calculated and printed in the Daily Racing Form. Four stars would be the value 30 years ago. I have passed on my copy.
Kind of wish I'd read "Picking Winners" first, as this one is really a defense of the methods he described in that book. But a good and surprisingly entertaining read - Beyer's an excellent handicapper but he's also a very good writer.
Good stories about Beyer's journey in developing a method to handicap thoroughbred race horses but outdated. Book teaches a complicated system for developing speed ratings for race horses. Outdated because these speed numbers are readily available in the Daily Racing Form.
