Welcome to the world of Italian noir. Carlotto is a modern noir artist. This is book five in his Alligator series. Alligator is an ex-con who runs a nightclub and does unlicensed detective work with two associates , who are also ex-cons. Their methods are at times a bit savage and vicious, though always professional. This book has a racy cover and is a crime story, not kinky erotica. The title and cover depict the subplot which concerns a well to do couple caught in a world of S&M fantasy play which they keep secret, under wraps, and that secret leads to blackmail, kidnapping, and more. It is into the world of sleaze and perversion that the Alligator must travel.

Anche se l'Alligatore già si era cimentato con il sado-maso in uno dei casi precedenti, qui sale di qualche gradino (o meglio, scende, visto che si va verso l'inferno) e si addentra negli annunci in rete (ricordando che siamo nel 2001) nel mondo dei film BDSM e soprattutto degli snuff, i video hard che si concludono con la morte della vittima, molto richiesti nel mercato clandestino, nonostante costino cifre considerevoli per ovvi motivi. Il cliente dell'Alligatore è un master che denuncia il rapimento della moglie, una bellissima modella sado-maso tedesca (di cui sappiamo fin dal principio che è morta proprio per fist-fucking, la penetrazione con la mano, una pratica estremamente pericolosa - mortale, in effetti - visto che la prima scena del romanzo è proprio quella della morte della donna.)
Il rapporto di Marco con Virna è in crisi; Max la Memoria (che l'Alligatore continua a chiamare Ciccione... l'unica cosa che non sopporto dei libri della serie) decide di andare a Genova per il G8 a manifestare pacificamente (e sappiamo tutti cosa accadde tra il 19 e il 22 luglio 2001); Beniamino Rossini non vorrebbe accettare il caso, ma si trova coinvolto suo malgrado.
E, naturalmente, come in quasi tutti i casi dell'Alligatore, quando un cliente si rivolge a lui paga in anticipo... e meno male. Perché va a finire sempre che, per un motivo o per l'altro, Marco & company si ritrovano a concludere l'indagine da soli, cercando di trovare il bandolo della matassa ingarbugliatissima e di fare giustizia.
Forse questo è il caso che mi è piaciuto di più della serie, finora.
Il rapporto di Marco con Virna è in crisi; Max la Memoria (che l'Alligatore continua a chiamare Ciccione... l'unica cosa che non sopporto dei libri della serie) decide di andare a Genova per il G8 a manifestare pacificamente (e sappiamo tutti cosa accadde tra il 19 e il 22 luglio 2001); Beniamino Rossini non vorrebbe accettare il caso, ma si trova coinvolto suo malgrado.

Judging a book by its cover is famously futile. But I fell for it nonetheless...
The 2014 Europa Edition of Massimo Carlotto’s ‘Master of Knots’ is a superficially thing of salacious sensation. The cover-art is overtly sexual: the dust-jacket itself is unusually high quality and pleasingly tactile, and the back-cover blurb is nothing less than the opening moments of an erotic strip-tease. It all suggests a mature, sensual exploration of explicit themes within.
The short prologue, too, was presumably written to attract a certain type of reader. It details the death of a beautiful woman during extreme BDSM and is the only part of the novel to dare to tread that dangerous ground. Here the author gets close to the core of the matter: the morality of sexual pleasure at the knife-edge of acceptability. But then he bails out, scampers back to the safety of a traditional pulp-fiction back-streets investigation – and not a particularly well developed one at that.
It’s a cop-out, plain and simple. And I have to wonder if this edition isn’t entirely intended to capitalise on the publicity flurry accompanying the ‘50 Shades…’ film.
The teasing intro aside, Master of Knots is an entirely average detective tale. A trio of over-the-hill Italian reformed criminals – one with mob connections, two rather more lightweight – undertake occasional investigations where victims can’t involve the police. The husband of a missing woman begs them to find out what happened to his wife after the pair of them fell foul of blackmailing bad guys, one of whom has a kink for the wilder side. Don’t wait with bated breath for the Master of Knots to make his appearance: he’s nothing more than a shadow, an underdeveloped plot device, a meaningless MacGuffin.

The final insult: in the concluding chapter it seems that the author couldn’t really be bothered to wrap up the investigation to give the reader any sense of satisfaction. The plot just subsides into obscurity with the protagonist effectively shrugging his shoulders and passing the buck. No real resolution: no moral conclusion. And barely anything to raise an adult eyebrow in the entire story.
I understand that this isn’t the best of this author’s work. I’d certainly think twice about trying any of his other books.

I had never read any of Carlotto before discovering this book in his “Alligator” series. Marco, ex-con, now private investigator without a license, and bar owner sets out with two other ex-cons (well, Rossini is still an active gangster) to eliminate a gang of S&M degenerates.
Mariano Giraldi comes to hire Marco and his friends “Max the Memory” and Rossini, to locate his wife, Helena who has been kidnapped. She specialized in being a model for S&M photographs. The husband who had a relationship with a different submissive dared not go to the police for fear their lifestyle would become public and his business would suffer. The woman has been gone a month leaving little hope of finding her alive. Others then disappear as Marco et al realize they have stumbled on to an S&M blackmail ring and snuff-film maker.
There’s a subplot revolving around the G8 summit meeting in Genoa in 2001. The police engaged in some serious violence against demonstrators and many were later brought to trial. Max, a Free Trade advocate, goes to protest and is seriously injured. Obviously Carlotto is making a strong political statement.
The dizzying amounts of Italian Lira being thrown around dates the book since the Lira was replaced by the Euro in 1999-2002. When they pay 20,000,000 Lira as a bribe to a hooker, my head begins to wobble a bit. That aside, this is a fun, if inconsequential, little entertainment that shows a very dark side of Italy’s corruption. If you want something as dark but more literary, read Donna Leon’s books. They are both entertaining and literate. Carlotto suffers by comparison.

El autor de éste libro estuvo en la cárcel por el asesinato de una mujer. Según el chisme él pasaba por el lugar cuando escuchó un grito de ayuda y al intentar ayudar a la mujer ella falleció. Massimo Carlotto se dió a la fuga , incluso salió de Italia. Después fue repatriado a Italia y “cumplió” con parte de la condena. Por algún motivo lo dejaron salir de la cárcel. Leí dos libros de él y la verdad es que no me gustaron, los leí porque los tenía que leer mientras estudiaba italiano. Porqué no me gustaron sus libros? Porqué son muy crudos y se nota que el autor sabe muy bien de lo que está hablando. Este autor no es para mí.

Questa recensione è fatta a caldo ed è molto emotiva.
Questo libro è bellissimo. Mi è piaciuto da morire e ho già prenotato in biblioteca un altro libro di Massimo Carlotto. È schietto, con uno stile asciutto e veloce, riporta riflessioni che non sono mai scontate, e mai superflue. I personaggi sono perfetti, hanno un modo di dialogare estremamente interessante e costruttivo per la storia, caratteri difficili ma adorabili, e hanno quel tipo di rapporto che li fa sembrare una famiglia anche migliore di una di sangue. Il caso è decisamente crudo e per stomaci forti, secondo me perfettamente in linea con il contorno dei protagonisti. È semplicemente un bel libro, che mi sono goduta e che mi ha rovistato un po' dentro, tra disgusto, tristezza, rabbia e tenerezza mi ha tenuto davvero compagnia.

I enjoy all his books. This one has some particularly interesting characters and a story that, while it starts and proceeds better than it finishes, seems for that reason even more life-like and authentic. I hope Italy is not as messed up as these stories suggest.

Questo è per me il sesto libro della serie dell’Alligatore.
Ero molto curiosa di leggerlo perché qualche anno fa scoprii l’insolito argomento dello shibari giapponese.
In questo libro non si tratta esattamente di questo; sono sì modelle che si fanno legare ma, essendo un noir, si passa velocemente dai nodi soft allo snuff hard. Era solo per dire che questo come libro lo avrei scelto comunque, anche se non avessi avuto l’obiettivo di ripercorrere la storia di Marco Buratti. Che ho ritrovato con piacere, con il fedele Max e il folle ma affidabile Rossini.
Prima di partire a parlare dell’indagine, volevo fare un piccolo apprezzamento sulla dedica del libro, da parte di Carlotto, a Horst Fantazzini. Lessi della sua incredibile vita qualche anno fa, nel libro Ormai è fatta. Non è una cosa secondaria, dato che Carlotto è sempre molto attento alle vicende carcerarie, in particolare alle ingiustizie che in esso vengono perpetrate e che spesso non ottengono la dovuta attenzione.
L’impegno di Carlotto è un altro dei motivi, insieme al fatto che mi piace il noir, che mi porta a continuare a leggerlo.
Durante l’indagine per rintracciare il Maestro di nodi, che si sospetta abbia ucciso Helena, si inframmezzano le vicende di Genova, dato che Max la Memoria decide, contro il parere di Buratti e Rossini, di andarci. E’ stato doloroso ripensare a quegli avvenimenti, ai soprusi, alle ingiustizie, alla Diaz e a Bolzaneto, alla morte di Giuliani. La vicenda viene ben resa dai personaggi, che la rendono naturale parte integrante della vicenda. Così come diventa naturale parlare delle condizioni carcerarie, dato che oltre a Marco, anche Max ci è finito. Per di più anche Rossini, proprio durante questa indagine, ci rimane per qualche giorno. E’ Max la Memoria in particolare che, sollecitato dall’indagine che gli riporta continuamente alla mente torture e sofferenze, parla e riparla del carcere e delle violenze che in esso accadono. Buratti e Rossini sono in effetti insofferenti, vogliono dimenticare e basta, ma a tratti gli permettono di parlarne.
Lo sfondo è molto cupo, trattandosi dell’ambiente sadomaso che fa abbondante ricorso alla tortura. E’ voluta e cercata, è di base una pratica sessuale estrema, ma sempre tortura è. Già dalla prima scena, i sudori freddi non mancano. La storia è narrata come sempre con la giusta tensione e con il gradevole intreccio fra i tre personaggi, a mio avviso inscindibili. Se Max, o Beniamino o Marco venissero a mancare, sarebbe un bel guaio. Come infatti capita quando Rossini viene arrestato. Marco e Max fanno quel che possono, ma la sua assenza si sente eccome. E oltre tutto Rossini aveva in mente un differente modo di risolvere la questione, ma ormai deve accettare il fatto che Max e Marco, in sua assenza, hanno deciso di farsi aiutare da un poliziotto corrotto e da una prostituta, anch’essa introdotta nell’ambiente sadomaso e che farà da esca.
Insolitamente dolce il finale, con Marco che finalmente parla apertamente con Virna. Non sentiamo tutto ciò che si dicono, ma è dolcissimo lasciarli a quel tavolo, con le dita di lei che sfiorano la mano di lui, in una frase non detta ma ben chiara per entrambi.
Mi sono piaciuti anche gli scenari, dato che a Torino ho vissuto e a Milano vivo attualmente. E’ sempre più facile calarsi nelle atmosfere quando si conoscono vie, piazze, luoghi.
Secondo la cronologia dell’Alligatore fan page, devo ancora recuperare L’amore del bandito e La banda degli amanti.
Gli altri li ho già letti, incluso Per tutto l’oro del mondo, che lessi appena uscì. Ancora due, quindi, e sarò pronta per la nuova uscita di settembre Blues per cuori fuorilegge e vecchie puttane. Spero di fare in tempo.

Massimo Carlotto's "The Master of Knots" is the fifth novel in the so-called Alligator series. I have not read the previous four books, and it is now even more unlikely that I will read them, maybe except the first. I do not like book series because of their repetitiveness.
The narrator, Marco, nicknamed "Alligator" because of the drink he favors, is an ex-convict who works as an unlicensed private detective. His two associates are ex-convicts too (in fact one is quite a hardened gangster) and their connections to the Italian crime world help Marco solve the cases. The story deals with the gruesome world of S & M and violent pornography. Marco's client hires him to find his missing wife, who has been kidnapped because of her work as an S & M model. Very soon it becomes clear that the client is not telling the truth. The plot involves a lot of brutality, and some passages related to violent pornography are quite graphic. I find the plot rather naive, and the character of the gangster who keeps killing people yet has a heart of gold is - to put it mildly - ridiculous.
The only valuable parts of the novel are the well-written fragments about extreme police brutality in handling the anti-G8-summit protests in Genoa in 2001. One of Marco's associates is an anti-globalization activist and he gets severely beaten by police during the protest, beaten to the extent that he barely survives. The author, Massimo Carlotto, was himself imprisoned for many years, for crimes he had not committed, so it is no wonder that for him the police are the worst kind of human scum, and the judicial system is totally crooked.
If not for the Genoa protests thread, this would be a one-star novel. The political activism issues elevate my rating to

L'Alligatore è L'Alligatore.... Carlotto è Carlotto...pura logica. Noir, naif, borderline, la combo perfetta! Divorato in una giornata di luglio, ventilatore sparato addosso e una storia dannatamente avvincente tra le mani, da non staccare gli occhi neache quando il telefono squilla e le mail fioccano.

Another jolly concoction, more Calvados than noir. Carlotta's Alligator series is a bit too laid back for my tastes. I prefer his nastier novels, such as A Goodbye Kiss or A the End of a Dull Day.

Carlotto scrive sempre molto bene. Il difetto di questo libro è che tende a propagare un'idea malata e criminale delle pratiche BDSM, e questo non è bello, oltre ad essere sostanzialmente falso.

“Il Maestro di nodi” è scritto con maestria da un autore che conosce bene il genere noir e il modo di catturare l'attenzione del lettore fin dalle prime pagine. La trama è coinvolgente e mantiene la suspense alta fino alla conclusione.
Mi piace l'idea dell’autore di esplorare i vizi e i segreti delle persone comuni, piuttosto che concentrarsi su vicende legate a personaggi estremi e fuori dal comune (per quello bastano il protagonista e i suoi compagni). In questo caso, la scelta si rivela vincente e consente di esplorare il lato oscuro dell'animo umano che può essere presente in ogni persona.
Tuttavia il libro presenta alcune problematiche in termini di machismo dei protagonisti. Anche se fa parte delle caratteristiche dei personaggi, può risultare un po' datato e fuori luogo in un'epoca in cui si cerca di promuovere l'uguaglianza di genere e il rispetto reciproco.
Insomma, il libro si legge con piacere, ma la caratterizzazione dei personaggi principali come maschi alfa finisce per essere nauseante.

Marco, an ex-convict owns a club in Italy, but spends most of his time working as an unlicensed private investigator, along with his two associates, Beniamino Rossini and Max the Memory, who are also ex-convicts.
Mariano Giraldi hires them to look for his wife, Helena, a S&M model, who was abducted 20 days earlier. The abduction was never reported to the police, and the only clue is a rose made out of knotted silk.
The plot of The Master of Knots is fairly simplistic. Marco and his associates check out some locations, ask questions, check the internet for S&M websites, and hack into people's e-mail accounts. In order to get more information or co-operation from people, they resort to violence, torture and threats, killing anybody who may expose their investigation. This is combined with constant descriptions of driving in cars, sweltering in hot cars, bars and apartments, and drinking.

Master of Knots is one of a series of novels by Massimo Carlotto, featuring a private investigator named Marco and his two partners, both of whom served time in prison with Marco. A friend of Marcos's has referred a client, Mariano Giraldi for help. Giraldi's wife, Helena, has been kidnapped, and in the room from which she was abducted, a rose, made from intricate knots in a silken rope, has been left. He cannot go to the police because the Giraldis were into sadomasochism, with Mariano keeping her safe, until he failed. As Marco and his partners try to find Helena, they discover other women, also involved in S&M, are disappearing. A sadistic psychopath nicknamed Master of Knots is at work, and Marco and team try to discover his identity and stop him before he can kidnap again.

Sentimenti contrastanti per questo libro.
Si legge velocemente e la trama è sicuramente intrigante, ambientata in un mondo proibito e parallelo.
Al contempo il finale risulta purtroppo sbrigativo, e il giudizio espresso su Carlo Giuliani troppo parziale e poco ragionato, specie se si considera che costui era ben incappucciato e con un estintore in mano, tanto violento quanto quei black block, citati dall’autore come causa di violenza al G8 di Genova: insomma, mancanza di obiettività e di buon senso.
Un po’ come quei comunisti italiani al Parlamento europeo, che ad inizio anni 2000 non vollero equiparare le brutalità sovietiche a quelle nazifasciste.

E che dire, Carlotto con l’Alligatore non ne sbaglia una ma non mi stupisce, é un autore che leggo da anni ormai!
Buratti, Rossini e Max questa Volta sono alle prese con una faccenda di sadomasochismo finita nel sangue, una scia rossa che si porta dietro un solo nome: il Maestro di Nodi.
Il trio piú squinternato della storia riuscirá a stanarlo, con non pochi problemi ed “incidenti” di percorso.
Quelle di Carlotto possono sembrare storie esagerate, assurde, ma in realtà tutt’altro.
Mi spiace che Carlotto é un autore che in pochi conoscono, ma forse é proprio questa la sua fortuna: pochi ma buoni.

I liked this book. Not really for the S&M side, which did nothing for me, but the thought about people living secret lives which occasionally bleed into their everyday world, and how far they will go to protect their secrets...
A husband is worried about his missing wife, who is kidnapped while engaging in their S&M lifestyle. But there are lies upon lies, and the 3 protagonists, all with their own criminal baggage, have to suspend their own judgments about people's lifestyles while trying to solve the disappearance.
An interesting Italian noir.

Premetto che è il primo Carlotto che leggo e quindi è la prima indagine dell'Alligatore che mi passa per le mani ma la sensazione che mi è restata è davvero strana. Il giallo è senz'altro scorrevole e i personaggi sono anche accattivanti ma alla fine ti sembra di aver sempre galleggiato in superficie. Ecco, credo che questo sia stato il problema che personalmente non mi ha fatto andare oltre le tre stelle, la scarsa profondità dei personaggi, dei dialoghi e della scrittura. Da rivedere.

The characters and plot are akin to the adage, it takes a thief to catch a thief. Three ex-cons out to avenge bad deeds. In The Master of Knots, the three start out to find a kidnapped woman. Her husband hires them because he cannot go to the police. He and is wife are into S&M but no one knows and lives would be ruined if he went to the police. The pursuit of the kidnapper just lead them deeper into the world, the secret world, of S&M, and it is not good.

Un altro noir della serie dell'Alligatore teso, duro, che va dritto al punto. Un viaggio nel mondo della pornografia e una divagazione su quell'altra pornografia, quella del G8 di Genova e della violenza della polizia. Con gli amici di sempre, l'alligatore deve venire a capo di un intrigo complicato, come i nodi che l'assassino lascia come ricordo. Sullo sfondo, l'amore per Virna e la difficoltà di un rapporto normale per chi fa quel tipo di lavoro.

A trio of ex-cons operating an unofficial detective agency are approached by a man asking them to find his wife, who has been kidnapped as part of an S&M scenario gone badly wrong. Initially reluctant to get involved in such a scene they become more and more determined to track down and stop the criminal as they learn more about his misdeeds.
This is another excellent hard-boiled story from Carlotto, set against the background of the 2001 Genoa G8 riots.

Another short and snappy instalment of Massimo’s Alligator series. Pretty standard, hard boiled crime story, but sprinkled with the references that only Mediterranean Noir seems to have in such abundance - the food, the music, the mood.
Enjoyed this book, although the specific subject matter was a bit disturbing.

The Alligator and his investigator/vigilante pals take down a porn/snuff film gang that’s kidnapping and killing people. There’s the recurrent theme about how times have changed and people don’t act honorably, even criminals. And a sub story about the dashed ideals of the old Left and the repressive tactics of the Italian state. In Italian mysteries, politics is never far away.

This is a reasonably well plotted Noir novel set in Italy c.1998 or so. If you're a noir fan give Carlotto's books a try.
In old age I find I am less enamoured with noir in general. Specifically I couldn't identify with the anti-heroes of the piece, and the plot hinges on S&M which made me slightly queasy.
