The Storm

Rate this book
Pride and Prejudice variation. After his disastrous marriage proposal at Hunsford cottage Darcy decides to drown his sorrows caused by Elizabeth’s rejection at the village inn. Later he wanders off into the park, gets caught in the storm and a broken branch puts him to the ground. After regaining consciousness he does not remember much but he seems assured that Elizabeth has accepted his offer of marriage. Will Darcy ever remember what truly happened that faithful evening? Will Elizabeth feel guilty of her harsh treatment of him? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He placed another light kiss on her lips, but pulled away quickly, looking boldly into her eyes. “How have you been for the last few days, my love? Worried about me, I imagine.” When she did not answer but stared at him in stunned amazement, he ran his hand down her back again in a comforting gesture. “Colonel Fitzwilliam told me that you were asking about me and coming to the manor every day while I was unconscious. You should have trusted him with the news about our engagement. He would have made sure to let you see me earlier.” “Our engagement?” she croaked. “Naturally,” he said, lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her fingers. “Our engagement, my soon to be Mrs. Darcy.”

As a Janeite purist, I confess I didn’t like when in the first chapter Mr. Darcy says he doesn’t care about propriety. However, I continued reading the book because the premise was interesting and I enjoyed some of the initial scenes. Unfortunately, after reading the book, I cannot say I enjoyed much of it. I will try to explain why, but to do that, I will have to do some spoilers.

I wish I didn’t have to give too much of the story away, but only by doing so I will be able to explain why I didn’t enjoy it. It may also allow my readers to form their own opinion, as some of the reasons why I did not like the book may not be an issue to other people. We all like different types of books, and I’m sure some readers may like The Storm, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

In this book, Mr. Darcy faces a head injury during a storm after the Hunsford proposal. As a consequence, Elizabeth is told he doesn’t remember her refusal, and is led to believe she has to pretend to be fiancée so that the shock doesn’t make him get worse.

I liked this premise, but I did not like the way the story continued. One of the reasons I didn’t enjoy this book was the liberties Elizabeth allowed Mr. Darcy. On the first 3 days that Elizabeth is still pretending to be Mr. Darcy’s fiancée, she allows him to kiss her, masturbate in front of her and sleep holding her tight. After that, the engagement is made public and she is forced to really become his fiancée.

I also did not like that the Jane/Bingley situation is almost forgotten during the book, and that it was only briefly mentioned that Mr. Darcy had told Bingley the truth. It felt as if the author suddenly remembered this was one of the reasons for Elizabeth’s refusal, and decided to close that chapter.

As for the characters, Elizabeth did not seem Elizabeth to me, and Mr. Darcy is self-centred, bossy, with bad moods all the time, and capable of anything just to get what he wants.

Despite everything I’ve mentioned, in my opinion, the ending was the worst part of the book. In the end we discover that Mr. Darcy has lied about not remembering the refusal the entire time just to get Elizabeth to marry him. He continued lying while they were married, and only admits the mischief when their child is about to be born.

I could not imagine Mr. Darcy having such a bad a character! The Mr. Darcy I know would never lie to Elizabeth for 2 years just because he wanted her to marry him. He would not have her based on a lie! For me it is just too disappointing! As it was reading she never really forgave him. This is not the happy ending I’m expecting in a JAFF book.

One last thing as to why I did not enjoy the book. Even though English is not my native language I could find several mistakes that distracted me from the story. For me this is usually not very relevant, but I imagine that it can be quite disturbing for those whose native language is English. The book may have been re-edited by now, so this might not be an issue anymore, but it was when I read it.

In my opinion the story is interesting, and the author created a good premise, but the development of the idea was not the best and I cannot say I liked the book.

Entertaining, but not much beyond that
Synopsis:
The day after the disaster proposal, Darcy is in a bad way.
description
After numbing his sorrows with some spirits, he returns to Rosings only to be caught in a storm. A branch hits him and he suffers a nasty head wound. He is found and brought to Rosings where he remains recuperating. Because he was foxed at the time- and his body loose, thus taking the impact better- a full recovery is expected, but for the time being it seems he is conveniently fuzzy about his memory.

Elizabeth is filled with guilt when she hears of the accident, knowing her harsh rejection rendered him in the agitated state that placed him in danger. When she is met with Colonel Fitzwilliam, she learns he thinks her and Darcy engaged. She corrects his misinformation, to which the Colonel replies,
description
And begs Elizabeth to play along, so as to not exacerbate Darcy's condition. She reluctantly agrees, but Darcy is particularly affectionate in her bedside visits, and Elizabeth is having a hard time swerving his attentions. When the truth of the matter comes out, how will Darcy react? And how will the lot impact the P&P space time continuum?

The Brass Tacks:
The rating could teeter any where from a 1 to 3, in that while it was easy to read & kept me engaged, it's not memorable, and features a disturbing rendition of Darcy.
description
He is not so much ardent and honorable, as he is obsessed and manipulative, which left a sour taste in my mouth. Not to mention this nonsense:
The epilogue was lame (even for the low standards I hold epilogues to,) and due to the final hour plot twist, it made the lot feel less like a HEA and more like:
description
Yeah, low key depressing.

So was I entertained? Admittedly yes, despite my better judgement. But there was not much about these folks that read anywhere close to Pride and Prejudice characters.

So I'll break it even to 2.

꙳ Spice Scale rating: Coquette Cayenne 🌶 🌶🌶/5 ꙳
📎Similar premiss to Pride and Persistence

The language with which this is written is not at all smooth and seems to be more modern than anything else.

It begins in Hunsford just after that proposal and after a violent storm and then Elizabeth learns Darcy was found injured due to being hit by a falling tree and in such bad shape his life was considered in danger. Furthermore, if he survives he may be crippled due to a bad back injury. Elizabeth hurries from the parsonage to Rosings to check on his condition daily and after Darcy gains consciousness, is told by the Colonel that Darcy is speaking of their engagement.

Elizabeth plays along so as not to upset anyone but soon tells the Colonel of the misconception. He convinces her to continue her act so that Darcy is not upset but also as the Colonel truly believes Elizabeth is a perfect mate for his cousin. And here I have to agree with other reviews. Darcy takes advantages of the situation (being left alone with his "fiancée", he pulls her into his lap, kisses her and even convinces her to lie down in bed with him!!! So even if the lie comes out...she is compromised.)

Darcy does not act like the Darcy of canon. I can only remember his words about "But disguise of every sort is my abhorrence." And then he chides Elizabeth when she professes feelings he thinks are not true?

Wickham's role is much closer in blood to Darcy and he shows up more than once to cause problems.

The ending (without telling exactly what it is) did not ring true IMHO. Again we learn (during another thunder storm) that Darcy has used deceit in winning his goal. And the author's telling us that Elizabeth carries a grudge for a long time also is not in character for the Elizabeth we know. After all in canon, she forgave Darcy even when he admitted separating his friend from Jane and not being sorry he did so.

Lastly, I have to say that the wedding night scene was crass. I won't relate details but I cannot imagine it playing out with book learning's instructions as told here.

This story is an interesting although time worn concept. Someone suffers an injury that results in amnesia and others are forced to deceive them.

Think of this as a reversed "While you were sleeping"

Darcy proposes, Lizzy declares he is the last man she would marry.

Darcy leaves and goes to the local pub to drown his sorrows, during his return to Rosings in a violent storm he is struck by a falling branch and loses consciousness
[Note- there seem to be a disproportionate number of head injuries in P & P worlds]

When Lizzy learns of his injury she heads to Rosings and is told by Col. Fitzwilliam that Darcy believes them engaged and is asking for her. She feels guilty and blames herself for his accident so she agrees to the deception. Various things occur and Darcy explains that they must marry. So he travels to Longbourn to spend time with the Bennets. Darcy wants to marry immediately, Lizzy convinces him to wait until September.

Mr. Bingley, Caroline and the Hursts are barely mentioned. Wickham has an actual blood bond with Darcy. Lydia is spared disgrace because she must return to Longbourn for the wedding. There is a brief moment of Lizzie in danger. And a rather graphic love scene on the wedding night.

After the Hunsford proposal Darcy is caught in a storm whch results in an injury and losing his memory of the proposal. Elizabeth for the sake of Darcy's health is convinced to agree that Darcy and Elizabeth are to wed. Of couse with everyone of these stories there is a happy ending.
I finished the story, even though I am not a great fan of Elizabeth or Darcy I was not happy with their portrayal of their characters.

An average sort of a story

I couldn’t enjoy the tone of the story. Even until the end Lizzy gets irate with Darcy about they came together. On top of that they could only have one child. I know that’s realistic, just not fun to read when Lizzy is written as not totally happy.

I found this among my achieved items on my kindle. I have liked some of Wegner's stories in the past and couldn't remember why I never reviewed this one. If you've never read anything by this author you need to understand that she has a coarseness to her writing. The beginning of the story was familiar but later as i read some issues I quote I think the answer to why I never reviewed was because I stopped reading it at that part. This book begins with Darcy's proposal after leaving he is hit in the head and loses consciousness. when word reaches Lizzy she is plagued with guilt and goes to Rosing's to see his condition. She is caught by the Colonel who informs her he is not well. Days go by with a guilt ridden Lizzy stopping in checking everyday. Until one day she gets information that Darcy is awake and asking for her. For her? Totally confused she learns that Darcy suffers from amnesia and believes them engaged.

Darcy is written very forward and affectionate with Elizabeth. He is in bed pulling Lizzy in his lap and snuggling her neck, even some familiar caresses in intimate areas. For Lizzy's part she agrees to play along with Fitzwilliam because she is told that it is only to help Darcy recover. This part of the book went along pretty well for me. It wasn't until Lizzy tells Darcy of the farce that I saw a side to Darcy I did not like. He is written so cruel that I couldn't believe my eyes. "You should be grateful that I have enough honour and integrity to still take you as my wife, and not my mistress, despite your shameful and heartless behaviour towards me. Now, go. I do not want to see you again today, and do not come tomorrow." There are more cruel words thrown out during this confrontation but I put enough so you would get the idea.

Short story is he gives Lizzy a choice to either wed him and keep her reputation intact or refuse him and have it known how she was entertaining him in his bedchamber at Rosing's. Once the deal is made I just found it hard to like him. He is so different than the Darcy I enjoy. What changes Lizzy way of thinking is Jane. Jane in her dutiful, loyal manor convinces Lizzy had she not had some feeling for Darcy in the first place she wouldn't have allowed him to touch her. This still did not convince me in the high handed and disrespectful way he scolded her. This passage of time in the story began to mollify me and the old, familiar Darcy started to come out. He is easy, affectionate, supportive and proves himself patient enough to please her.

This happens after we see a stern, stubborn side of Lizzy when she closes herself off for two days in her room at Longbourne. She refuses to see Darcy, who is staying there, and once again along comes her wise sister Jane to inform her she is acting as her mother seeking revenge on Mr. Bennet. When allowed entry, to her bedchamber mind you, he is remorseful of his behavior. I can deal with that at least it showed me he did not think himself above reproach. Elizabeth gets her extended engagement and the trip with the Gardners. Wickham's true character is revealed around this time in the book a bit different than in the past.
*******************BEGINNING OF SPOILER**********************

George Darcy was adventurous before meeting Anne and finds out he fathered a son right before he falls in love with Mrs. Darcy. He is honest with her and his only means to do right by him is to allow his steward to raise him as though he is theirs. It is all kept hushed until years later Wickham learns of his heritage. He really does not add much to the story though. I found he was just filler and background noise for the story. On a more disturbing note Georgianna and Ramsgate still happened. So yes Wckham attempts to seduce his half sister. Yuk!
********************END OF SPOILER*************************

I found myself in a good place within the story at about the half way mark. Happy with both characters and how they obviously loved the other. In the final chapter, however, a twist is revealed that turns everything on its ear. I questioned everything I just liked and when the epilogue comes out I was left feeling depressed. D&E still have a HEA just not as nice as I would like to see. This is not the never ending love feel between the two I want to feel and it bc of that that made me change my ratings, even while I wrote my review I was on the fence. I felt the author really tested her readers with this one. It was not an easy, pleasurable book and while I did not hate it completely I will never reread it either. It has explicit scenes but I will bring out that because of what his father had endured because of his wild past Darcy is a 28 year old virgin. He obviously spent his lonely nights reading up on the act. You will see no maidenly shock on Lizzy's part but a very thorough, questing Darcy. Definitely a book to head into with caution. Enjoy!

Thoughtful and interesting

I think she handled one of my favorite 'what ifs' very well. This is not a wild emotional ride but a very human examination of behavior. The Darcy in this version is unrepentant and if it were not very human of us all to behave in a manner contrary to the way we view ourselves--and present ourselves-- I would accuse the author of betraying the beloved character a little. This is in no way a romanticized or an idealized reselling but a thoughtful investigation of the characters in a new situation.

This is just a note for myself so if I ever reread this, not to read the epilogue, it is shit, and it brought the whole book down imo.

The rest of the book was okay, but it came across that the author was not a girls girl, at one point in the book, Georgiana and Elizabeth were talking about Greensleeves, and Georgiana was like poor Henry VIIl. What??? excuse me wdym poor Henry the eighth, he killed two of his wives. That’s a really minor issue, but I couldn’t let it go so here it is.

Also, Darcy is kinda evil in this. I won’t lie to you. This book did grip me though I could not look away, it’s quite good in like a weird way like I think I would reread it (barring the epilogue truly it’s shit) I definitely enjoyed this book more than other people did based on the reviews.

I kind of wish they made Darcy more evil because they do make him evil, but it seems unintentional like the author is trying to make you think he’s not evil but he is he is evil and I wish they’d just gone with it. They should’ve embraced it like yeah darcy is evil in this I just think an evil Darcy it would’ve been fun, at least to read.

Darcy got into an accident after the Hunsford proposal and seems to have forgotten that he was refused. The Colonel convinces Elizabeth that it would be best not to upset Darcy and Elizabeth goes along with it in the privacy of Darcy's sick room for a while but when they attract Lady Catherine's notice she finds that she can't avoid being engaged to him for real. By this time, she's found out that she's not averse to his kisses, and the Colonel is convinced that they're a good match. So they try to work things out.

I enjoyed this story despite some reservations but the very ending left a bit of a sad note. There's an epilogue that makes it seem like they were not a terribly happy couple, and there's a plot twist that might explain why. I prefer my HEAs to make things better but this HEA kinda ruined it. I think the plot twist should have been revealed earlier so there was more time to grovel and reconcile, and still some sort of a choice to make instead of a done deal.

Complete and utter trash.

I had vowed to never read another book by this author, I already had this one and hoped it was clean. It is not! I am.going to make sure any of her books I have downloaded are removed permanently from my kindle. I truly don't understand why she ruins a story with a good pot with pornography. I know I'm not the only person it find such content necessary to a story. She needs to get her head out of the gutter.
The only good thing about the books I have from this author are that they were free. I do not recommend this garbage if you're not interested in constant talking of sex and graphic scenes.
I didn't even bother finishing this. Don't waste your time.

Lovely storr

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is beautifully written and the storyline is better than the original. George Wickham did well based on his own work. I especially loved that aspect of the book.

Good variation

Interesting story of Darcy getting knocked out in a bad storm after being rejected by Elizabeth at Hunsford. He thinks she accepted his proposal and the story goes from there. Somewhat dissatisfying epilogue.

Darcy gets caught in a storm after a disastrous proposal at Hunsford and suffers a serious injury. While unconscious doctors fear if he will walk again. Elizabeth feels responsible and visits Rosings to inquire after Darcy and is summoned to his bedside by the man himself when he comes to. Elizabeth quickly realizes that Darcy has forgotten the disatorous proposal and rejection and thinks they are engaged. As per the doctors orders and Coronek Fitzwilliams recommendation, Elizabeth's plays along with the engagement and allows Darcy liberties that only an engaged man should have. This plot has a lot of potential but I gave it a poor rating as I don't believe the actions by a presumed engaged couple would have occurred in that era and seemed very out of character. Once Elizabeth confronts Daecy about her rejection she is quickly made to realize that the liberties she has allowed him now tie her to him. Elizabeth must reconcile her forced engagement to a man she hates. The path to love is not easy.. Good story line but it turned me off when it became a scandalous romance. I skipped many pages which ruined the novel for me. Had so much potential!

As for many books by this authoress, I liked the premise and enjoyed the first part of the story, but not the rest of it. My impression is that she had a good idea ( even if it wasn't exactly a very original one), developed it just fine for a while and then completely lost touch with the characters and the narration's rhythm.

Darcy gets his way.

Elizabeth is a weak character who accepts that female manipulation of Darcy is the only way to get what she wants from him. Wickham is a rapist and willing to murder but then he becomes respectable years later.
