First, I liked the tasteful texture of the front and back covers of this paperback. It felt like brushed cotton & combined with the black background color it gave the book a feel of elegance.

The story begins when Josie, the wife of Paul - a lending officer at a small bank - is shot in the head execution style. The following day the bodies of 3 more murder victims are discovered. One victim is Mark, the playboy husband of Josie's affluent best friend, Anna. The others are Mark's limousine driver & a security guard.

Both Paul & the authorities are stymied by the back-to-back murders, especially Josie's, as she was a schoolteacher at a Catholic school. They spend countless hours trying to determine if there is a connection.

Several chapters are devoted to lengthy details of 3 funerals, expounding extensively on finite matters. There was an absence of dialogue for an inordinate number of pages during this period.

As the author resides in Australia, the reader can be expected to encounter some British terminology, i.e., bloke [guy], mate [friend], lift [elevator], etc. This, however, did not distract from the story.

The plot is unique, with the reader not learning exactly what happened until the last few chapters. What I felt touching from this book was how Paul finally learned that a man is not defined by any negative things which occur in his life, but instead by his response when they do happen.

I received this book through Reading Deals Review Club for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a combination of mystery, police procedural, and family drama.

Every marriage has its ups and downs. Paul didn't feel his was any different. When his wife went missing, he was confused and dismayed. He did all he could to find her before calling on the police. Still, he had hope that maybe she would return home to him. When she didn't that turned his and his two teenage son's world upside down and sideways. As if that was enough tragedy struck a family friend then Paul's family as well. Will the police ever figure out what happened to Paul's wife, Josie?

This story shares deep emotional upheavals. I found myself crying at different points in the book. The story also talks about choices each individual makes along their journey through life and how that can affect their viewpoint. I learned some things about modern-day Catholics that I might not have known otherwise.

Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to adult language as well as moderately graphic sexual situations and violence.

I received this book for an honest review. A great character study and police procedural all in one. Paul Ford's wife goes missing on her way to work. Does this good Catholic wife and mother have a secret life? When her body is found it opens up investigations into the Mafia, blackmail, and secret love. Until the last few pages Paul, and the reader, are left in the dark. Did Paul and his two sons really know this woman? You'll be turning pages as fast as you can to reach the answer.
